Why not make it a "scale and funfly"?
I.e. there is a scale "comp" but anyone can show up and get some flying on the day. Scalies tend to inspire people to get into gliding more anyhow, so if you got 15 people and 7 had scale models, chances are there'd be 10 people with scale models the next year.
Keep it informal for the first few years, just have a "pilot's choice" award for best model. (Yes, it'll probably be a glass slipper so Fred's Opel has no chance in that scenario, but we're not taking this all serious, right?) If it built momentum you could always start to do the "judge from a circle" bit.
Fred:
Exactly, I think both can be mixed, but the thing is to define how far you can go with the Funfly part.
I still think that if funfly was interresting people, we will see more people at those funfly event. Look at the Cork one.. Scale, Fun, and so on are mixed in a fun for all event, but every year, we always have (ok almost) the same bunch of people. I don't mind, we really have fun (and Ralph mother's cakes are a must ! :D ), so that's why, I'll go more for a real National, knowing already that a funfly will don't change people mind about the meeting anyway.
For the scale thing, I know that people who present vintage gliders from kits or own design don't stand a chance against all fiberglass kits from shop...
I think we call that the CB syndrome  But that's another story :P

Just checking who is going to the Graves for the 6th of May? trying to organise cakes and tea/coffee.
Any takers?
