Slopeing on the south coast in Iceland

(1/3) > >>

selleri:
Went on a road trip yesterday with couple of mates, the purpose of which was to scout new locations along the south coast. The weather could have been better, foggy and wet but we got chance in between to fly. "fjall" means mountain in Icelandic.

First stop was Reynisfjall, the US military was kind enought to make a road to the top when installing a LORAN station there around the war years. Although it has long since gone the road has been maintained by the land owners and is in good condition. Despite that you'll need a 4x4 car with decent road clearance to get to the top. If you've heard of Reynisdrangar they are besides Reynisfjall.

Next stop was Dyrhólaey, it's a tourist attraction so it also has a road leading to it and in a decent condtion and you should be able to get there in a normal road going car.

Reynisfjall has plenty of gras to land on and very nice cliffs with sturdy edges. Dyrhólaey has smaller place to land and due to the narrow size near the road not as well suited but it's landable.

Another good location we scouted is called Háfell but the wind was blowing along it so we didn't go up there. All in all a good day out with the mates and about 600 km driven.

40% K8B, 20% K8B and Kult Quattro, plus supplies and tools and three modelers.

Part of the road up on Reynisfjall and the town of Vík.

First thing we see up on the top is this "swimming pool".  ;)

Looking out towards Dyrhólaey.

Reynisdrangar from a new perspective.

Setting up the planes.

Checking the slope.

First time he flew slope though he's been with us on previous trips.

Decent view.

I think we've got a new slope enthusiast!  :)

Lovely, I d be happy to go there.....but what about the temperature?

selleri:
10°C up on the top.

We also have warmer days.

Happy Days:
Some quite dramatic landscapes there Selleri, with loads of lift. A little piece of  slope soarers’ heaven on earth. :D

Icelandic roads look to be almost as good as County Wexford’s roads in Ireland. Great, provided you don’t have top drive on them.

And you’ve found a newcomer to the hobby,…..all in all a very successful outing!
