Gliders > Slope Sites in Ireland
Rathlin Island gliding site
Richard Boyd:
Hi Keith, the natives are very very friendly on the North Coast !!!!!
Landing areas are grass !
Rathlin is an island, very famous place for its birds ! scuba diving as there are lots of German and British WW wrecks around the coast, also Spanish Armanda wrecks.
The late Tommy Cecil made the area famous by rescuing Richard Branson on his cross Atlantic voyage in a hot air balloon.
Branson built a visitors center / hostel on the Island as a thank you to Tommy !
2minutes into this video you will see Rathlin Island appear in the distance.
If all else fails we have penty of slopes to fly in the area.

Richard Boyd:
That is why I love my wee country !
Sloper paradise ! went the sun shines lol
Happy Days:
"The coast line of Rathlin is mainly cliffs and it is open to all wind directions !"
ALL directions! HHHMmmmmmm :o :) :D
Let me see if I’ve got this right :?:
The natives are friendly. (check!)
The island has slopes facing in all directions (check!)
Grass landing areas. (check!) :D
Seems the only thing missing are the dancing girls!
Just to help me get this clear gents, …..
The idea is to fly over the weekend of the 21-22May?
Are you guys intending to stay on Rathlin island, or on the mainland and commute to the island each day?
Oh, one more thing, can we get to top of all the slopes?
( I’m thinking it’s no good having slopes facing all directions if we can’t fly off them)
I'm feeling myself geting drawn into this,.........Might not be able to wait until May 2011!

Ron:
I was getting interested.... :D
Until I discovered that it's 605km and 7 hours 37 minutes driving from here (Bantry) :( :(

Richard Boyd:
All I can say gents is that the trip to Rathlin is an adventure !
What it has in store for us remains to be seen.
I understand about the distance,
It will be a fun trip for who ever wants to join us.
Richard
