Title: Getting together for flying!!!!!
Post by: joe on January 16, 2008, 22:46:43 PM
Hello again.
Was thinking about getting meetings together and fly-ins etc and how to get us all out together.
I'd like to suggest that we make a date once a month over the summer(ish) period to get together and fly. We set the dates out in advance and we all try to make it out. If you can make it thats OK but you will know that on a certain day people are flying.
Maybe start april and go til September or October.

Also, Fred got a new petrol engine from Santa so the tow plane will be up and running for some aerotowing as well.

So who is in??

Pick me, pick me !

And try to put a tow hook on one of your glider !  :D Some aerotowing session are on the way this spring / summer !

Excellent idea Sir! It gets bl***y lonely flying on my own all the time!

Never done a tow hook before :?: .  I still have that 3.4m ASW 28, maybe that would be a good candidate for that?  Where do I start to look for a suitable hook mechanism?

Chris
who is getting quite dizzy at the amount of traffic on the forum all of a sudden!

I'll draw up some pictures tomorrow with photos. And make a page.

10 minutes, and you can install a tow hook on any glider !  :D

Surely, for aerotowing, you need a hook with a remote release mechanism in the nose?

Chris

Yep, the release is mandatory !
And on both sides. You can always save one of the 2 machines in case of problems.. :?

OK!

I look forward to your hook build thread!

I would not mind doing some aerotowing. Unfortunatly I have no glider to aerotow at the moment   ,so I guess I will just have to watch.

Great idea to set out some dates for glider meets this spring/summer.  Something to look forward to given the awful weather at present and good to get them into the diary early!  Perhaps we could also do some winching/hand towing and organise an informal thermal event of some kind.  We would need to borrow a flat field somewhere but maybe it could be combined with the aerotowing.
Title: Getting together for flying!!!!!
Post by: Alan_Perse on January 21, 2008, 22:33:33 PM
I have a bungie (Hi-Start) if thats any help.
Title: Getting together for flying!!!!!
Post by: joe on January 21, 2008, 23:16:27 PM
Bungie will be great Alan. I have a very old one that I was given. Have never tried it. It looks a little worse for wear!

So lets have a flat field day then. Aero-tow, bungie, electric gliders as well.

I'm sure we could use the club I'm in to fly from. The model county flying club. The field is in Ferns. This would be handy for aero-tow. Probably have to share with a few IC planes. Rarely more than four people flying though. Even in summer time. If we don't do aero-tow then there are probably lots of places to fly from. All we need is a field!

Maybe leave that one till July/August/September in the hope of a nice day!

So one meet a month sound OK to all? Maybe starting in March?
Should we not do it on months that have other meeting( Cork, ISR etc) or just go for it?

Would be really great if we got into the habit of meeting once a month. It would hopefully encourage more pilots to come out as well!

Maybe we could make it the last Sunday of every month?

During this winter time, usually isnt any good days?
Always rainning? Or the wind is too strong?

No shortage of wind, BUT............... :D

We do in fact have some incredible days all through winter, but there really is a very high chance of rain, so it would be very difficult to organise something in advance for winter.

I agree with Joe's proposal, and that we try for every month.  Weather can still call a halt to things at short notice, so it must be accepted that we will not suceed in getting every monthly meeting (or other fly-in meetings) to work.  For that reason it would be better to have the days fixed in advance, and that we should include all months, even if there is another gliding meeting also scheduled for that month.  That way we might suceed in getting one or two days of flying together this summer  !

What will be important is to have a pre-arrenged system of notification of whether a day is on or off, as well as of reserve sites for different winds, due to our complete dependance on weather.  This forum is the obvious choice, and we will have to decide on a cut-off day and time for the organiser to post the final decision.

Ok i understand.

I was used to check over Windfinder and/or Windguide for those details.
Is there any other more realiable website to use for Ireland?

So how about these dates? They are the last Sunday of every month.
May need to change the April date to earlier as the Cork glide-in is usually at the end of April.
We can make one of these a flat field day or add a flat field day (or two!) as well.
We should try to have another Official ISR meeting at the end of the summer. Maybe the September date can be another Official meeting.

Anyone see any problems with these date? (apart from getting people out that is  )

March 30th
April 27th
May 25th
June 29th
July 27th
August 31th
September 28th
October 26th

Without a doubt the most accurate forecasts for the next couple of days, but only serves coastal sites.

BY the way, you must change the spot in the spot menu to the nearest to the site youre interested in!  Not always easy, as they use surfers names for surf spots!

Dates look good to me.  Won't be able to make all of them, but hopefully most.  Looking forward to them already!

May try to fly at Kilakee this Saturday - depending on wind and cloud base! I need to be away by 3 though, so probably will go up shortly after noon if it is flyable.  Sunday might be OK too.

Won't be able to make it on Saturday Peter. Might be able to get out on Sunday though. Could do with a few hours flying. How bout you Fred? Killakee Sunday? Looks like a south-west wind.
Sorry to stray off topic!

I've got some friends coming over from the UK to fly here - probably the week b4 Easter.

I would like them to see various spots across the country.

Where is this Kilakee place?

10 minutes from my house  :P  :P

I have the kmz file, I'll post it later.
W-NW slope.
You also have a N slope here, but not that great.
You must show them Mt Leinster too.
Anyway, let us know, we can organise some flying !  :D

Great!
I'll try to visit the closest place just to have a look. :)
Are the access ok, or i'll have to do sort of offroad driving?
Title: Getting together for flying!!!!!
Post by: Fred on January 25, 2008, 11:08:10 AM
No offroad !  :D
For Keelakee, you can see the car park. Park here, and launch fron the window !
Mt Leinter, NE is at the car park, but to fly 360degrees, you need a little approach walk, but nothing serious, even with big machines.

Let me know when you are going to Keelakee. We can meet there and have some flying !
Title: Getting together for flying!!!!!
Post by: IceWind on January 25, 2008, 12:15:17 PM
Ok thanks.
If i went there it would probably be on sunday, has saturday i have my agend filled with some visits as i'm still searching for a place to stay.

But, my Swift II is ready, but could i fly it over there? I'll probably have to use a rock to increase weight, it has litle more than 300gr. :)
I've fixed a couple of stuff that was damaged during the travel and i've charged the pack. It's ready!
Title: Getting together for flying!!!!!
Post by: Fred on January 25, 2008, 12:24:54 PM
That should do it !
I'll bring the easyglider anyway, just in case.
Seems we are going to be a few of us on Sunday in Keelakee !  :D

Well, I rarely saw someone in Keelakee before 1.30pm...

When we go to Mt Leinster, we are ready to fly at 10am to have a good day of flying.

But I'm not Irish, so that don't bother me

Yep! Need to do some test flights Alan.
A bit worried about the wind. It looks like south-west. Hopefully we can fly ok!

Post by: Peter on January 26, 2008, 17:06:04 PM
South-west is generally flyable at Killakee.  The slope faces more SW than west so it should be OK.  Due south is generally the problem. Did'nt get out today myself - so hopefully be on the slope tomorrow (Sunday).  Can't make it our before 2.00ish though.

Fingers crossed for some flying at last!

OK -  after reading this thread, my guests from the UK are now aiming to be here for the first get-together (30th March)!.  They will be here from 27th to the 31st, and staying (mostly) with me in Kerry.  Can we perhaps discuss a venue for the 30th, so that we can try and finalise their plans?

Thanks

Chris
Title: Venues
Post by: cvanscho on January 30, 2008, 16:23:14 PM
OK, picking up what Fred mentioned over on another thread, it seems Mt. Leinster is one spot that works in ANY wind direction?  If that is true, I doubt very much there are many others like that!

We certainly cannot make such a boast in Co. Kerry.  It would be essential to meet in a central spot and make a final choice on the day here.  That said, the quality of the slopes that would then be available are world-class in terms of lift.

I would love to hear from the Cork guys?  Are there for instance alternatives to Old Head of Kinsale if the wind is not blowing SW?

And from the Shannon guys, at to the suitablility of Killakee (I'm sure I read somewhere that Killakee works in any wind direction?)?

OK, returning to the March 30th get-together.

My UK guests will be with me on the west coast on Friday and Saturday 28th and 29th March, so I was thinking it may make sense for us to drive over to the famous, legendary Mt. Leinster for Sunday?  They could possibly stay over somewhere on the east coast that night, as they are returning on the ferry the next morning.

Any thoughts on this?

Chris

Chris - Mount Leinster sounds good for the March meeting but I am unfortunately double booked that weekend so will not be able to make it.

Icewind - tomorrow's weather does not look too good.  If I can see the mountains tomorrow and its not too windy I might try and get to Killakee in the afternoon, but I would be surprised if it is flyable, at least for me.  Great photos from last Sunday by the way - must remember my sunglasses next time!!!

Great :D .

Windguru is doing really weird things for the longer term forecasts, never seen such changes every time I look. I can only assume they don't really know what is going on, so things could still change a lot before Sunday, it seems.....

Don't talk to me about the forecasts  .  My friends are driving over from the UK for a few days flying in Ireland, so I'm checking the weather all the time, and it keeps changing, so I haven't a clue?!  Seems the only forecast we can rely on is for the next or the same day....

Er..., Happy Days - how will I know its you - will you be the one wearing a black-and-white tux (as per your avatar)?  And, how do you like to be addressed - "Happy", or "Days"? :?:

As for how I like to be addressed: My other 'alf calls me "Grumpy" I've also been known to answer to "You" along with numerous expletives that I don't think the administrator would allow me to write.

Lets hope the wind picks up a bit.

Fingers crossed lads!
