Title: Big F14 Tomcat PSS project
Post by: JohnPearson on June 06, 2011, 23:07:22 PM
This is a new PSS project for 2011, which I hope will be ready for next year’s flying season. It is a very large F14 Tomcat made from blue foam, with a swing wing system which extends to just over 2m wing span. The model came from a free plan of a small electric prop jet, which was blown up on the photo copier by approx 200%. My f14 is the second one to be produced, the first was made by Ian Robb of the Langford model club and was made from polystyrene and flew off a dolly with a large electric motor and a pusher prop. Ian’s  f14 flew very well and looked great in the air, however, you needed a big runway to get the model off the ground when using the dolly.  I had intended to make my example an electric pusher jet as well, however, over the last few years I have got into PSS flying, so the big  f14 will be converted to a power slope soaring model.
I have worked on the model on and off over the last year or so, and thanks to Ian for making the swing wing section and the elevator control system, both work great and should perform well in the air. One of the problems that I had with working with blue foam was the amount of dust when using the sander in the workshop, which give me health problems, even with a mask on, however with warmer and longer evenings, I can now work outside where the dust can blow away better.
So back to the model, The f14 will be a semi scale jet, made from,  blue foam and glassed all over. The wings , will have a variable sweep system and flight controls will include elevators and ailerons, may add rudders later if required.

This is the F14 example that I have got decals for:

Two 25kg digi servos to operate the wing sweep system, which works very well!

I will keep you all updated as the model takes shape, not looking forward to all that sanding again!! :(

The sun is in the sky and the wind is blowing across the garden, time to sand!!!. Yes started to sand down the f14 tonight, with a lot of blue dust flying around the garden.

here's me hard at work with my beltsander

I have taken a few photos to show just how large the f14 is, with the wings swept forward and in the delta position.

Hi Fred
Hope things are well! The f16 which you have , is it an old combat models kit, if so, I have a video from combat model's marketing department, on how to build and fly this model, I build the A10 about 12yrs ago. If you want it i can post it to you next week.

Many years ago, when I was a young man, I worked on the A10 8) , and their predecessor the A7’s. Oh, those were the days……….! Young, handsome,  and virile   . Are yes,…..I remember it well!

I'm impressed with your F16, JP. Never seen a varaible geometry glider before. I'm always very impressed with unusual models. Well done!!

This is what Richard and I came across last night while passing belfast international airport:

Antonov 124 russian cargo aircraft

We seen the tail of this aircraft above the terminal building and stopped for a quick look wow!! now you don't see that very often.

The Antonov took the whole runway to get airborn, it's a bigggggg mother!!

Off to Cananda with aircraft parts( wings I think)

A nice end to a long evening of judging a scale comp, at a local hall for the N.I.A.A.

Sorry about the poor photos, not much light to work with!

Now this would make a nice PSS model I think????? :?:  :?:

JP, if that's the big Antonov AN224 Simon Cocker has already built one for PSS and he launched the Buran (Russian Space Shuttle) off the top of it, which is what the 224 was originally designed for

Hey Bill,

Looks like more the An124  :P

Mr Cocker did the 224. A beast, and still the biggest PSS ever I believe  :?:

You are right Fred, this is an An124, the smaller sister of the An225. I would not build a model like Simon's, which was fantastic, because it would be to hard to transport( one big  B52 is enough on the car roof, anymore and the car may take off) ) A smaller model around 4m wingspan would be nice :?: to fly and transport to the slope.

Hey John,

Time to change car!  :P  :P

No but you are right, what's the point if this is to fly it only once a year  :?:  :!:

Hi Guys
Well it's nearly a year from the last time I worked on the big F14 model. There still is a lot of work to do before the big bird flies, however I decided before I restart work on the model, I would test out the concept of a swing wing aircraft as a pSS glider. I picked up a 'HK F14 at the right price on the web which is designed for twin ducted fan, however I think with the right adjustments to the design, It could make an interesting PSS test model, so over the last few weeks I build the model and I have to say that for the price, (£40.00) it is a good looking model.

Wings and fuselage covered in light glass cloth, with PolyC applied and painted with tester pots from local paint shop.

Wing span about 1.2m when deployed

Still have to install the wing servos and connect everything up, but hope to get her ready for a test flight within the next week.
