Hi Fellas,
looking forward to meeting you all up on Mt. L next weekend. At the moment I am looking for a campsite or B&B close by.
Whats the long range forecast looking like, never having flown there before I am not sure what to bring?? I think lighter small planes with an electric as backup might do it?

Hi Peter :D
The NI guys and myself will stay at the Ryan's pub (aka The Moss House) in Bunclody (10 minutes from the slope :D )
Cheap and good... And a pub !
087-6438168 to book a room.
-
Saw the Farmers weather forcast for the week ahead. Looks like the weather could be perfect for the fly-in :D :D. But probably to early to tell.
-
Fly in? Have I missed something? :D
-
No Dave you haven’t missed anything,………yet. Next weekend is our PSS glide-in. :D
I think we should all get an ISR “T” shirt and wear it at the Glide-In. On the back should be printed
“The answers are:-
1/ As far as you can see it.
2/About 100Km/h
3/ Anything from €100 to over €5000”
I was up on Big L today and there were hundreds (well, may be not quite hundreds) of sightseers and I got totally fed up with their same old questions.
I have to admit I wasn’t in a particularly good mood anyway because I couldn’t find any lift!

As Fred says the 3 of us coming down from the North are staying at the Moss House. John P and I stayed there for last years fly in and it's very reasonable and of course the bar is VERY close................................right below us!
-
In answer to your questions about what planes to fly Peter. :?:
At the moment the wind directions seems to be set for westerly’s on Sunday. The west ridges (there are three on Mt. Lienster )all produce very good lift. :) If the wind speed is at least 10Km/h any light model will fly with ease. If the wind is higher than 20Km/h, almost anything will fly.
(I once invited my mother-in-law to try flying her broomstick off Big L. She declined my offer! :!: )

Here's a fourth answer to satisfy a question that kids sometimes ask:
4/ No I'm not going to crash it.
-
Thanks for your replies
Booked into Moss House, Pub sounded good  Fred & Bill
Sounds like plenty of slope choices, should be great.
Keith I like your idea for your tee shirt, but you forgot one question: How do you land it ? My usual reply is "right next to me " which clears the area fast!!
cheers
-
Alan,
I wouldn’t be able to put your suggestion for a fourth answer on my T shirt.
(Knowing me, I probably would crash it.)
Peter,
That’s a good answer. Invariably onlookers want to picnic right in the middle of the landing area don’t they. :!:
The forecasts are for SW winds on Sunday now………..Not such a good slope, but if it’s sunny we might get some thermal flying. :?:
K.
-
Keith,
If you want it, I can print it..... (http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/error404/answers-tshirt.jpg)
I will be at the Fly In so I can give it to you there.
Anthony
-
Anthony,
Can you do one for me too XL! Let me know cost and I'll see you at the PSS
-
Bill,
I will do one for you aswell.
The price for these will be 5 euro.
regards
Anthony
p.s. Anybody else who wants a t-shirt let me know asap and I will have them at the fly in.
-
Hi Anthony
Put me down for one XL, see you at the flyin over the weekend
Johnp
-
Yup, put me down for one Anthony, size L please. (I'm not a fat b******d like some people! )
K.
-
We're just big chested Celts!!.................
Not wimpy E*****h
-
 Nice one Anthony !
I think you should add
4 : No, I will not crash it!
5 : Yes they are gliders, and there is no engine !
What do you think people ? :?:
-
Oh, and F16 will not be ready for the event ! Too cold for the resin to set in my garage, and no room to make a hot box ! (and that thing is big, need a big box !)
So, worked on something else this week end...
And went from this :

Hi Fred
I have one of these GWS F15 models. I got it last year and have flown it many times in edf. great little model.
Fred 'you can be my wingman any time'
-
B52 and F15 at the same time... =P~
We'll see what that thing ca do as a PSS machine :D
-
If it's ok with everyone I will add in 4 & 5.
I will be there on the Sunday only, but I will organise to give to Fred so you have them on the Saturday.
Anthony
-
Can I have a small one anthony? Can you do it on a Navy T-shirt for me. Just to be differant
-
Joe,
I have a Medium Navy, is that ok? Or a Small in 'Bottle Green'?
-
Any...ermmm...XXL black / darkish colours ?
-
I have a yellow xxl or grey xl size?
-
Hi Anthony. Could you do one for me also in Medium.
-
Yes Alan, I will put you on the list.
-
I'll take a small white or the med navy if you have no small.
Could you put "IslandSlopeRebels" under the glider on the front?
Would that be OK with everyone??
-
God yellow ! [-X
Ah well, no worries, I'll go for the next batch :D
We need to find more ideas for T shirts !
-
IslandSoleRebels

should that not read "Motors are for Girls and glider tug pilots! :D "
-
Motor=cheating !
-
OK, lets get off T-shirts and back to PSS!!
Pics of the Frogfoot in it'scurrent state. Glassing tonight and primer tomorrow, so WILL fly at the weekend. Canopy needs trimmed and the engine pods need attached, but we're still on schedule.

-
Well for all you Top Gun fans, Peter(Maverick) Carson will have a big F14 for the PSS event, with him. This is an electric model, However brave Peter will try it of the slope, and before you ask! yes it has a swing wing system.
Hi Bill that frogfoot looks good and strong!!
-
Nice F14 ! Did it equiped it with... ah..ermm... never mind ! :P
So far, forecast looks OK, and looks like that will be on the West slope ! :D
-
Yes Fred, it used to have m****r up the bum end!!
-
Fred,
what is the forecasted wind speed for the weekend, all my pss models are a bit on the heavy side :(
Aidan are you going this weekend?
Ralph
-
HI Ralph.
Looks like Saturday will be around 15-20 Km/h. Sunday looks better more like 25km/h.
Sat looks Northwest which is in between the west and north slope but we can probably make it work. Sunday looks like a westerly which should be good.
-
Ralph on the West or North slopes,………..if the wind speed is greater than 20Km/h I’d be confident you’ll be able to fly your models, unless their wing loading is more than about 20oz/sq ft. Then they'd struggle a bit.
K.
-
I’m seeing predicted wind speeds of 29Km/h for Sunday. On the west slopes that = good lift conditions.
The only slight potential prob is the question of cloud cover, :?: although most sites are predicting only small amounts of low cloud. :)
Time to start deep cycling those Ni-mh batteries lads. Make sure they’ll hold enough current for a hard days flying! :D
K.
-
Forecast for weekend still looking good? Trying to decide what to charge and bring! :?:
-
Still looking dry. I was up there yesterday in what was supposed to be 20km/h Was more up there as you'd expect. Lots of lift. The wind is looking more north-west for tomorrow. So a little off the for the north slope but will probably be fine.
Sunday is looking more westerly. Should be fine for the west slope around 20km/h. Wind supposed to die off in the evening of both days.
Hope that helps??!
-
Cheers Joe. Basically, bring everything
-
Basically yes
Bring everything!
-
Let's see:
SU25-Frogfoot
Rico-she
Madslide
Pelicano
Falco
Fiu
Eliminator 100
That should cover most wind conditions!!! :?:
-
Do I really have to list what I bring for the week end ? :P :P
No, not that much really... Car too small (actually looking for a new one right now !).
Getting excited by the week end !!!
Nothing finished, working day and night at work for the past 3 days... Tonight, plan is to at least finish the F15, and get the Crystal ready too (just in case...)
-
You need a van Fred. Wife has the family car and you get a model trasnporter......seemples :?: :?:
-
Bill, I wouldn’t bother with the Mudslide, don’t think there will be enough lift for 4X flying this weekend. :(
At the moment the winds are predicted to lighter than we’d hoped, and slightly “between” slopes. Have to wait and see which slopes produce the best lift.
We may have to walk to the top of the north slope, or to the highest west slope, about 10 minutes walking at 45 degrees. (A good pair of boots would be useful!)
Feeling Fit?
K.
-
Hi Bill
you need a big truck for all those models, I need an air lift and parachute drop over big L for all my planes
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/JohnPearson/c17goldchutes.jpg)
model drop over big L
-
Hi Keith,
We're coming down in a large van so space NOT a problem. :D :D
I'd hate to be down there and not have it if the conditions were right :D
Fred, I'll remember your bags!
-
Well, here we are guys. The first morning of the PSS Fly-In. I’ve been looking forward to this and particularly I’m looking forward to seeing a monster from the North. (No, not Bill Scott’s belly  ) I’m talking about a flying monster………..Enter John’s B-52! :)
But the all important question is………Will we have enough lift? :?:
Well, most predictions are for relatively light winds today, and only slightly stronger winds tomorrow. :(
At the moment, at my location………..
Wind Speed = 12km/h
Direction = From the North West
Temperature = Zero degrees C.
Atmospheric pressure = 1034mB steady (Not the best omen for high winds)
If we transpose these conditions on to Big L. I recon there’d be moderate lift on the West slope. The fact that the wind wouldn’t be hitting the slope ‘straight on’ wouldn’t help matters. I predict High wing loaded models would struggle to stay in the air. (Hard luck Ralph)
However we could be just experiencing a pre dawn lull in the wind.
Oh, and I nearly forgot  …………Visibility? (Always useful when flying)
The is a small area of cloud over the top half of the mountain at the moment. However that should dissipate during the course of the morning. (It’s just early morning mist really.)
Next update, in an hours time.
Keith
-
Thanks for the update Keith, lightish planes it is.Bringing a scale Horten HO 229 to maiden today
Cya on the slope later.
-
bugger, bugger, bugger, all heavyweights, have to repack the car!
-
You have a model Horten, Peter? We must take some photo’s of it and post them on the forum. A friend of ours in Germany, Lothar, is into Hortens big time. (Emphasis on the word BIG!)
Sorry Ralph,……… You might like to bring one heavier model, just in case?
As to the weather?
Well, apart from the sun having risen and the temperature also coming up a couple of degrees, everything else remains the same.
There is a general cloud cover over the sky and Big L. still has a bank of cloud over it’s top half. By midday the slopes at least should be clear.
I hope to be on the slopes around 12 or 13.00, so I’ll look forward to seeing all your happy, smiling faces then! :D
K.
-
Just hit dungarvan. Weather overcast and calm. Well it will be a nice day anyhoo. See you in 2 hours then.
-
Hi folks,
Just want to say thanks for the pleasant afternoon on Mt Leinster today, I really enjoyed meeting you all.
Special thanls to the chap that helped me find my phone.
I'll be back for the next one, this time without electric power
Cheers,
Ray
-
Nice to have met & flown with you Ray. Let’s try and make a habit of it, shall we? :)
As you saw, I.S.R. is made up of all types of flyers, flying all types of planes. The most important ingredient of all, is fun! :D
Look forward to meeting you on the slopes again.
(Tip for next time: Keep control of your phone  )
Keith
-
You haven’t got time for breakfast! the best lift is predicted for this morning with the wind dieing off by mid afternoon.
Having said that, at the moment at my place, the air speed is almost zero
There is general cloud cover over the sky.
Temperature = Minus 1degree C. (That wasn’t supposed to happen) with a slight ground frost.
Atmospheric pressure = 1034mB steady.
(Again this does not bode well for strong winds.) We just need them to get up above that critical 20Km/h limit.
The sun is just starting to poke it’s head above the horizon. We’re nearly at the Spring Equinox so it should have enough power in it, at this latitude, to have some serious effect on the atmosphere. COME ON SUN!
Big L. is in the middle of the picture. If you look carefully you might just make out the radio mast.
-
Morning Keith. Thank you for your wonderful weather update.
Nice clear blue skies here and a decent breeze to boot!
Think your right. Getting out early is the best bet.
See you on the slope
-
Yea’ blue sky here now with strong sunshine. Not much in the way of wind but I agree that an early start would probably be best. (Early bird catches the worm,….and all that! :P )
I’ll probably be up there about 10.00.
No point in staying at home, the heating’s broke.! The guy that was supposed to fix it yesterday didn’t turn up. (You can’t get the staff these days you know,....... you just can’t get the staff!!)
-
Well, what a good time. As always, it was a great pleasure to meet the people who I’ve previously only heard of, and to renew the acquaintances’ of those I’ve already met. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. :D
Rather quiet in the lift department on the first day, :( but Sunday afternoon proved to redeem my faith in Big L. to ‘deliver the goods.’
Alas not quite enough lift for “The Big One” :!: but I think most of everything else flew. Including a strange little ‘Bat Like’ model from Peter K, a picture of which I’m posting for the main benefit of a certain German pilot.
(What do you think of it Lothar?)
All sorts of models were there. From the super fast, to the super, and right down to the super silly. A blue V tailed Thingy that, having flown three or four time promptly went on strike and refused to fly any more, and crashed! ( I’ve since found out that the battery had an intermittent open circuit)
I’d like to thank all who came over the two days, too numerous to mention but who’s photos will, no doubt, be posted later on this forum. (I didn’t take many picies, and what I did take didn’t come out very well. I couldn’t be bothered to put my glasses on when I was taking them, so I’ve “cut off” peoples heads  ….Silly me!)
Keith
-
Hey Keith,
great Horten IX  Looks like easy built from Depron :?: My regards to the builder.
All Your words sound to me like a great weekend. Is it still spring in Ireland? Over here it's all grey and the river went over the green I am used to fly, but NO snow.
Thanks for posting.
Lothar
-
hi guys,
been back in the house about 20 mins after a long drive home
We stopped in the cafe at the SuperValu in Bunclody before startingthe long haul back North. Can thoroughly recommend the burgers :D :D
Thanks again for an excellent weekend, shame about the wind, but obviously older than God,(but richer than Croesus!) Keith couldn't get the necessary sacrifices made in time
The weather is the ONLY thing you can't control with RC!!
Will post pics and video when I've had time to check through it :?: :?:
-
Hi everyone,
First of all, thanks a million for everybody to come at the event !  People as far as Kerry, NI, Cork etc, hope you all had a good time !
Wind was a bit marginal for the biggest/heaviest of the PSS, but big winds are already in order for the next event !
Lots of flying done anyway, and I hope everybody pulled lots of flight time over the week end (I did ! :D )
So, here are a few photos, sorry, none of in flight models, my camera is not good enough for that !
Video to follow relatively soon !

Try here Ralph:
http://www.sloperacer.co.uk/_content/vector3.asp
£320 plus carriage
You should also have a look at the Typhoon on the same site
-
Yes I saw that but was it Ray was the guy who had it said he got it for around €280 that is a big difference and shipping from UK quoted at £35, I could fly with Ryan Aer for a lot less!
Thanks anyhow
Ralph

Ed Coveney was the guy who was flying it. Appears on here as Eiretime.
I have his e-mail at home Ralph. I'll drop him a line and ask him to contact you. He may have gone direct to RCRM the manufacturer
-
Hi Ralph,
I think it was Ed who had the Vector.
By the way thanks very much for sorting out the glitching problem on my DHLG.
-
Dame you got there before me Bill :D
-
Yes I was on to the mfg but they sent me to the UK :( :(
Thanks Lads

By the way, we have a dealership agreement with RCRCM for Ireland :D
We are a bit late on the orders, but if anyone wants some of their gliders, contact myself or Joe (refurbising the website...)

Pete got talking to a paraglider pilot during the PSS event. The guy said he had taken some aerial footage of us flying and would forward it on.
It's up on Youtube at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92jMwUjBoeA
first footage of us is at 2:20
-
Personally I’d rather forgo the video and have had clear air space.
K.
-
Agreed.
Although it does look as if this guy went through slighlty behind us and out of our airspace.

For the Lad`s that are interested a video of the RCRCM Typhoon on RC GROUPS + thread. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1034497&page=56

 Nice !
Thanks Pete for the upload :D

Thanks for that Pete. Always enjoyable to see models in flight, if only so I can learn how it should be done.
May be we should put together a compilation of models crashing. I’d feel more ‘at home’ then!
