Scale / Horten XIV building thread
« on: September 29, 2009, 14:59:53 PM »
Hi,

Andrès is at the moment in front of me, because he has 8 weeks "parents-vacation" at the moment. Also he wanted to find out, if there are aerodynamic problems with this plane, because he was very much involved in the devolopment of the wing. So he hurried up like hell.

The last weeks I've been busy and will be busy the next few weeks  with finishing and ending the big HXII. Then there is another much smaller projekt on the workbench as a "block" for the XIV. But I am sure, the XIV will fly at a slope next spring.

to many projects and Ideas.....

Regards

Lothar

Quote from: "Happy Days"
Just as a foot note; It hasn’t rained in this part of Ireland for over two weeks! And the temperature is warm. We are told that it‘s not likely to rain for at least another week………can you believe that?

No, that's unbelievable Keith

Well, my skills in Flying are growing a little bit. Also it's easyer to fly the big one, than the smaller one. Especially the landing is better with the big one, because it has speedbrakes. Just more comfort for the pilot.

And actually i am in love with wood. Wasting time was never my cup of tea. I try to work as efficient as possible. There's only one life as modeller I have  So I don't waste my time. As we say in Germany: "Good Tools are half of the job". In the last 2,5 years I made about 8 or 9 wooden planes and my skills are now not to bad.

and Bill... every Horten goes well, if the plane is good engeneered. The aerodynamics are a bit complicated, because all functions are made with one wing.

Best Regards to the sunny Ireland

Well,

I don't know, if I am right in this area here, it's a Motorglider, but some of You may remember the little wooden triangle I flew in Ireland at Joe's Cliff, Mount Leinster and on the airfield (where I met this funny britsh man named Keith). This was Horten XII.

I scaled it a little bit over the last few weeks.

See the result:

The weight is about 7 kg, Span 3,2 m. It's flying very nice and much slower than the small 2 m version.

Video of the first flights is here:

Ha!

Congratulations! I read Your bult and repair thread, reads like a roman, very exciting, i always thaught: that's the end for this plane, but You always found a solution.

No, I do not really think about a plane with a fuselage and all the things which are not really needed to fly, but it would be a good Idea to have something similar to my little Toy-Pilatus, to fly at small slopes.

Thank You for the informations.

Hi Keith,

it looks, as if it WANTS to fly. A bit aggressive too. So don't hesitate to long throwing it away.

Keith, is there a link, where to get plans or a kit?

Hey Fred,

those are beautifull gliders.

The modern soarer are not my cup of tea, but they have a special sort of elegance.

All the best for the maiden flights [-o<

Fred,

quick answer:

The real Hortens used them as "Side rudders". I build this only one time into a wing before. But this wing is to big to "go just a bit flying" to make many experiments. So I decided to make them into the HXIV too, to find out how good or bad they are working. It's learning by doing. The big wing takes the side down, where the brakes are driven aout of the wing.

I'll see.

Ouuhhh Keith,

Your Ideas were better some weeks ago   I remeber Heidi said: "Keith is a fine man I believe."

I think it's better, that she doesn't read this thread over here

Alan,

I will not cover the whole woodwork. I'll cover only the open areas with silk. You will see, looks like my Colibri in some weeks. I love thís wooden planes to much.

Here we are:

both wings are ready covered on the upper side. This allowes to put the whole plane together and make "beauty-pics":

Now I have to save some Euros for servos and other stuff, before I can clos the other side.

Well,

today the other wing is at the same point as the right one was on the last picture. So all spars are done. The worst job on every wing for me is to make boxes with the spars to get real strong beams.

So I decided to plank the upside of the right wing first.

Here is the result:

The weight of the wing is now about 950 gramms. I hope not to come over 1500 gramms with all servos and the rest of the plywood-covering.

@Keith,

I am so sorry, but this build takes a much longer time as it looks at the moment. At the beginnig it always does big steps forward, but as more I come to an end, it takes maore time. But why don't You build an own projekt?

@Bill,

may be this here is a bit motivation not to struggle but to build??

Hi there,

the last days I worked a bit on the Scale-center-section. My Pilot Guillermo made his first test how he will feel in the plane. The prone position is a bit new for him, but he feels ok:

I also glued the first ribbs on the building board and checked, if it compares good to the center-sections:
