Title: 33% Kaiser Ka-3
Post by: selleri on October 19, 2012, 04:25:07 AM
Well it had to happen, this one has been waiting since 2008 to get up on the building table. I bought a short kit from Fred at Island Models (http://islandmodels.ie/index.php/13scaleka3) to help speed things along.

Wingspan: 333cm / 131in
Length: 180cm / 70.8in
Weight: ~7kg / 15.4lb

Decent sized plan.

Better start with something easy to warm up, part of the tail.

Hmmmmm, maybe not...   :?:

Might be better like this.

Starting to look like something.

Cheers Fred, just a happy coincidence about the formers!

Well after some cutting, sanding and gluing we are starting to see a structure form.

V-tail starting to come alive.

Few cuts with my little hacksaw, 8mm outer tube as I couldn't find a 7mm od. tube.

Tad of Hysol to keep it all together.

Squeesing the outer tube end together will keep the inner tube in place.

Sweeeet!

First change, v-tail servos in the tail. Hobbyking sells these re-badged MKS DS6125 servos (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=23340&aff=104285), they shouldn't have any trouble moving their surfaces.

Not much left, just the bottom sheeting and access hatch for the servos.   :)

Very very nice!

Servos in the V-Tail is one of the mod on the new kit being produced  :D

Also, on a side note, as your kit is from 2008, do you have diedhral on your wing?  :?:
I have added a bit at some stage, I can post the templates if you want to modify the holes for the wing joiners in your wings  :D
Purely cosmetic as mine does not have any, but it looks better on the ground

I'll post build photos of my new Ka3 this week end  :D

Propably not, though there's a plywood angle that isn't 90° so maybe that's for the dihydral?

Looking forward to seeing the new Ka.

Post by: Fred on October 24, 2012, 11:38:23 AM
Ok, cool, if it's not at 90 degrees, you should have the one with diedhral then  :D
You can easily check anyway by aligning all the wing joiner holes of the first 3 ribs, the top of the last rib should go up  :D

Last days have been spent on the second wing half, so nothing new there.

I've installed the wing tube, cut some hard wood in the gap between the spars and the tube, then glued with epoxy with fibers and microballons. Also added share web to the spars, should be bulletproof!

Same in the fuselage.

The plane has been used quite a lot on the leading edge.

The wing struts need to attach to something
(http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/2012/1352334062_0.jpg)

Every little bit helps to get a better mechanical join.

Then we install the plates in the wing.

And the fuselage.

We need a dashboard for the pilot.

Getting there, just need the finishing touches.  :)

Full size looks something like this.

Horns added to the elevator and pushrods made.

Were there suggested control throws being floated about or is TLAR the way to go Fred?   :?:

How weight have people ended up with in the nose? I was thinking of adding some weight at the building stage to minimise what is needed during the finishing stage.

Next up the nose, lot of balsa and dash of plywood needed.

Release for aerotowing will be in the nose.

Sorry for the late reply, busy week (on Call  :!: ), but for the throws, I am a very bad example as I always put the maximum allowed, just some expo and I do the rest  :D

Title: 33% Kaiser Ka-3
Post by: Fred on November 12, 2012, 18:04:41 PM
On top of my Head, around 800grs.
AUW of the glider was about 7Kgs. Way too light!
If you fly at the slope, another kilo would be nice!
Title: 33% Kaiser Ka-3
Post by: selleri on November 12, 2012, 18:07:28 PM
And here I was thinking 2 kg!   :D

Hmmm, extra weight you say...   :?:
Title: 33% Kaiser Ka-3
Post by: Fred on November 12, 2012, 18:15:53 PM
Well, you might need a kilo, as you have the servos in the tail (mine were in the front, under the pilot's seat).

Personnaly, I don't like gliders that are too light, especially at the slope.
If you look at the video of the first flight, it's not very pretty, as it was a bit windy and the glider is all over the place in the turbulences! And impossible to land as it kept floating around!

That was much better with another kilo, but if you mainly do aerotowing, that's another story, but might be good to keep a ballast option for those windy days.  :D

Now for the fun, canopy making!

Annealed the brass tubes.

No I'm not Superman! Those tubes are cooling down after being annealed. I'm silver soldering two parts that will become part of the locking mechanism so they wont fall apart when I solder the rest of the frame.

Then they where bent according to the drawings and held in place.

Where possible I inserted a bit of metal into the joins.

Voila, ready for the next step, cheated a bit at the backside and used one tube instead of three seperate ones but I'm sure no one will find out!

About 500 gr. in the nose, it'll do until I get all the stuff installed but going by the weight Fred put in his I might easily need another 500 gr. At least it's easier to add weight than remove it!

Then it's on to cutting some plastic.

Three sides ready for some fun.

Primer is sanded off where the canopy plastic is glued to the frame.

Then we apply some glue and wait for it to dry.

After it has dried it's time to get more precise for application of the internal seam. Syringe, silicone tube and a molested q-tip.

Hi Selleri,
Nice work. Is that an orange reciever I see in there, some of them are only suitable for park fliers, range is limited to 300 meters. I would be wary of using one in your masterpiece.

Yeah, good stuff, I use it almost exclusively on different material bonds. Wood to fiber, plastic to metal, wood to metal, metal on metal(back cross piece in canopy).

Over the course of the build I've been wondering if Fred had made an erreur but turns out he got it right, shame on me for doubting you mate!

The covering will need something to adhere to around the strut attachment points.

More gluing area aquired.

Next up, gluing the top piece.

And cut it open after the glue dried!

Getting there.

And that concludes, for the most part, the build for now. Next up finding some clothes!   8)

Sun hatch working as expected!

Needed to add a bit more steel sand. I knew that planes with the tail servos in the fuselage had been adding up to 1000 gr. to balance the plane. I've already put 500 gr. in but assembling it today and balancing showed I needed at least 800 gr. more! So it was added before covering can start. What ever extra weight I need to add will be put in with lead sheets under the tow release.

Bit of dry wall filler, just look at that line!!! Maybe I should change professions!?  ;)

...and now for something completely different! Poly-Fiber(Stits) fabric will be used. First order of business is cutting it a bit oversize for the area of attachment.

Then the fabric cement is applied to the areas we want to glue it too, usually the extreme most parts of the area being worked on and around openings.

Glue applied.

In full swing.

Progressing nicely.

Then we shrink the fabric with heat.

Voila.

Not too shabby.

Can't forget the tail.

Both sides done.

Still I feel something is missing.  ;)

Didn't take long to fix that and now the can of fabric sealer(dope) is on the table. The fabric sealer does just that.

Bit of colour is in it so it's easier to see where its been applied.

Now we just need to let it dry.

It sure is nice to have access to good mates that are professionals! Pretty neat how effortless this method is compared to the good 'ol heat shrinking film. Quite a bit faster than cloth and resin. Compared to *tex fabrics it's quicker and easier. I'm sold, now the only problem is importing the stuff.

I wonder if the Quark...   ;)

the full size boys use very similar materials. If you get the lightest material they use, it will do 1/4 scale up. Try asking around the airfields for a supplier

For the covering, looks like Dacron or Diatex.
And I agree, when you try those, you never look back!

Hey Bill,

For the Diatex, it is an iron on covering if you see what I mean, so all reday to go.
You just need to seal it at the end, that's all.

As it seems I've finished the last remaining hardner in the country the painting has been halted until next week. But it doesn't matter much as I finished the last major colour tonight so only couple of small parts remain. Tomorrow will be like Christmas but only with lot more wrappings!

Thanks Andrew, we needed a something little bit more than Pinky for my new DG800 (http://frettavefur.net/Forum/viewtopic.php?id=7469)!
It also saves me getting Pinky from A to B when towing my Ka8 mate (who owns the Sbach).

Congratulations on the successful first flight Selleri!
A beautifully finished model, a beautiful day! Many thanks for sharing with us!    :D
And I'm also glad that you like it!  :D

So now, the usual question everybody ask after the first successful landing of a glider... What's next!?  :D  :P

Cheers Fred!

Hmmm, finish the P-47, maiden the DG800 and probably build the Quark for next winter.
Then there is a gull wing fetish I might need to address, got any plans to help me with that?  :?:
