Title: 1/3 Scale Ka3 - Another one! With a difference :)
Post by: Fred on October 29, 2012, 21:53:30 PM
Alright, good to be back in the workshop gluing some wood!
So, here is the build of my modified 1/3 scale Ka3.
The main change compared to the previous one, is the new profile, a HQ 3012, a re-designed wing tip, and a few bits and bobs following customer's comments  :D

So, here we go, nice warm up, with the wings.

All the wood is cut :

And all the parts removed from their sheet:

Dry fit test of the new wing tips  :D

And the build start :

Aileron's LE are closed:

Servo frame:

Sub spars(?) in 5x5 pine:

Root rib

And the TE in 5x5 (plywood sheeting will then be rolled over as usual

And weights to set it down while evrything dry.

Tomorrow, next wing, and wing tips.. And it will be time to remove the wing from their jig to work on the other side.
I hope to have them done by Friday, as I would like to start the fuselage next week.

Stay tuned for more  :D

When you love, you don't count!  :P

Funny enough, I don't have any Ka3 in my current fleet as I gave them away!

Wanted to do these changes for a while now. Hope to have it flown by the end of the month.

Ah no, performance were good with the old one (remember the thermal flight in 2008?  :D )
But that left room for improvements  :D

By the way, I said HQ3012.. Just checked, and it's a 3512!

Oiii, what's this kindle wood I'm left with then... and now you're telling me it can't even perform!!!

Looking good, will be interesting to see this one come together.

Hope to have it flown by the end of the month.

I know you are fast mate but common 36.5 hours to finish the build, cover, paint(well you can skip that), hope for the right weather and fly it.
I think you need to go easy on the build juice!!!

Still good to light a BBQ!  :P

End of month RTF can be done, the build that is.
The problem with me, is the finishing. Can build a wing in an hour.. But can take a month to glue 3 ribs caps!

Anyway, told the wife she will not see me too much this month!

Second wing is now at the same stage as the other  :D
They should be ready for sheeting tonight (but still waiting for my plywood to arrive!  :!: )

Ok, back to the build!
Forgot I was on call last week, so barely got time to sleep!  :!:
But yesterday evening was quiet, so with a few days behind, finally started the fuselage!

All the parts are cut from their support.

Oh and look at my new pilot deck  :D

Starting with aligning the 5x5mm pine strip that will be used to align the fuselage, and keep it straight.

Then the fuselage is build, one section at the time, moving from front to back, making sure that eveything is straight at each steps.

And that's the first section. Followed by the next one

And so on...

I changed the skid design aswell. Not glued yet, but put in place to check that everything was ligned correctly

Front wing support closure.. Now flush with the former! (I know, I know... )

Before going forthur, it's time to put the first 5x5 pine stringers.
Like the formers, I start from front to back, formers by formers, and both sides at the same time to avoid going banana

Then, time to glue the stringers to the formers at the back of the fuselage.

Then, the second stringers are glued on top of the first ones, this time, from back to front.

Finaly, the angled stringers (?) are added, working on both sides at the same time.

Not bad! Fuselage structure is almost completed. Tonight, I will finish the fuselage boom, then, it will be time to remove it from its support to do the underneath (easier to do of the jig, and with all the stringers in place, fuselage is already rock solid!).

After that, nose cone to shape, a bit of balsa for the cockpit and done!
I'll start to detail the cockpit when I get to this stage.

Stay tuned for more!  :D

Is that the Skylark 3? How long have you had that? You should bring it to the next fly-in.

Thanks Brendan, but realy nothing complicated there, only a bunch of sticks glued to some pieces of wood    :D

@Alan, you might see it next year, have to rebuild the wings on that thing (broken spar), so its somewhere in the queue list of models!

A little bit more work done on Sunday!
More wood stick glued to the fuselage!

Fuselage is then put on its back.. For more wood sticks!

Finally, the fuselage is rigid enough (well, a lot rigid!) and the formers supports are cut. This will also allow more room to glue the keels for the skid.

All glued with Epoxy...
Then, time to glue more.. sticks!  :!:  :P

And the fuselage is now here, almost completed (yep.. more sticks!! and a nose cone...)

And of course, could not wait to put the wings on to have a look  :D

Friday, I received my plywood for the wings, so I can start the sheeting  :D
I should have a bit more time this week to work on it, so I hope to be able to make good progress!
Left to do :

Nose / Tail cone for the fuselage
Wing sheeting and ailerons.
V Tail.

So not much before I start to think of the covering and servos, and so far, on track for a first flight soon!
No issues with the kit so far, pretty happy with that too  :D
