Title: Mitsubishi J8M "Shusui" - Topp Rippin
Post by: mat2verre on October 22, 2012, 13:43:28 PM
Well, here is another construction from a froggy.

You may not know the J8M Shusui, but many people interested in airplanes heard about the Me163 Komet. Shusui is indeed the Japenese version of this aircraft.

I started the building of the kit on december 2011, on a peaceful part of the web... Here is the picture of the kit (from topp-rippin):

Wingspan is 95cm, so small...

I wish to use it as a PSS, but I would like to keep the possibility to motorize it with a rocket-powder engine, like on this video:

Construction began by fitting the canopy on the fuselage:

Then, I built a rudder in structure to make this glider more realistic:

I also opened wing root to insert the wing in the fuselage:

And after assembly, not a very good surprise:
Wing fairing is not acceptable in these conditions... I'll need to put some polyester to fill in this gulf!

On benoit (the pope) advices, and to lighten as much as possible the glider,  I decided to dig the lower surface of the wing (sheeting is made of Obechi) and the fin:

Now the wing fairing is done, elevons have been cutted off and re-built in balsa structure. Primer has been sprayed, I wish I'll be able to paint it this week. New pictures upcoming soon!

A+

Mat,
I hope to travel to France for that weekend but I am not sure if it will be to the Macon or the Menez Hom. I still have not made up my mind.

Here are pictures showing the structure elevons and the wing fairing, after a hard work of sanding/filling (difficulty came from the different hardnesses of composite, epoxy bond, obechi sheeting, polyester filler & gelcoat) and spraying of two primer layers:
The leading edge fairing is now OK:

And yesterday evening I sprayed two layers of yellow paint:
And after removal of masking tape:
Good news: I managed to spray without making any paint drop! 8)
Sad news: paint is not as gloss as I wish, it looks satin, although the aspect is slick... I don't understand why!  :(

Uh, I just forgot to show you the paint sheme I choose:

(It is a semi-scale, that's why the canopy - from a Me163A - does not correspond to the model showed above... If I have a few time I'll try to mold a new one)

The last picture is only here to show the scheme I wish to copy, but I didn't build this static scale model!

Hi Matt,
Nice model. Lack of gloss is caused by painting in damp conditions. It's referred to as "Bloom". It can be improved with paint rubbing compound.
John.

Thks for the analysis... I was worried to spray my paint outdoor, by 10°C... Next time I'll try to find another solution.

Thanks John.
In fact first flights will be done without rocket motor, to set up balancing & elevons travels. I also might have problems to get powder engines because I cannot buy it in France... :-(

And another couple of picture of the second color spraying:

Model is covered, it weights 730g (not balanced, without pushrods for elevons):

Looks good Matt, 1.6lbs/0.7kg  is a nice weight, should fly lovely in light winds.

Wing loading is approx. 46g/sqdm... not so bad!

But I still need to balance, she will take a few more grams to the end.

Hi there!

Long time without connecting to the forum.
The Shusui is now ready for the maiden flight.
Weight is about 760 grams, with pushrods & balancing (I had to add 15grams of lead).

This leads to a wing loading of 48.8 g/sqdm, I targeted 50 g/sqdm: Yeeeah!

Tomorrow I hope I'll be able to make the maiden flight (y'a qui qui vient à la pente???).

See you soon!

Good evening,

Coming back from the slope, everything went right: she flies! :D

I had to set the elevator trim up and I had to pull slightly on the stick during all the flight, I think that the balance is forward, I'll have to remove carefully some lead to analyse the impact on the glider's behaviour.

It flies fast but can slow down gently. The silhouette of this PSS is very realistic especially in lowpasses, just missing the walter exhaust sound!!!

Unfortunaterly we didn't enough time to take picture, the rain was becoming stronger and stronger  :(
