Today I was bored so decided to go find a new to me slope.
Every time I'm driving home from Wexford or Dublin I look up at a radio mask and wonder how do I get up there?? If there is a mast there is usually a service road.
The mast in question is on the top of the Cooley hills just before the north south border.
Well my friends today I found the road YIPPEE !!
The mountain has slopes in ever direction with the best being north south and east. The west slope is good but the others are fantastic.
I was a prick and never brought a plane with me but going by the ravens there is plenty of good air.
All slopes are beside the roads so minimal walking envolved which suits me lol
The landing areas are mainly all heather so cushioned landings

The site is stopping me uploading the fotos I took on my fone
I will try again later
-
ooOOOoo sound very interesting Richard, we await to see the picies :D
-
Hey Richard,
Now, that does sound very cool!!
Photos, photos, photos!! :D
Hmmm... What are you doing tomorrow? :?:
Might earned enough brownies points to try this slope...
-
Hi Fred every time I try to upload a foto the site uploads a different foto !!! I select a foto hit th summit button and an old foto of binevnagh is loaded !!!
Technology is given me a head ache lol
-
 If you are doing it from your phone, this is most certainly because of the size of the photo. Must not be over 800x800 :D
Send them to me, I can upload them later :D
-
Hi Fred I have resized the fotos on my fone to 750.
Maybe it's something to do with the I phone ??
-
Hmm, maybe, or the website (phpbb2 start to be a bit dated!  )
Forward them to me if you don't have access to a PC, and I put them up :D
Oh, and good to see you back! :D
-
Hi Fred I sent you a whatsapp request and I will send you the fotos
-
Yeehhaaa, fair play to you Richard, I'm living in Navan so it's only a 40 minute spin from my place. If I can help with the photos just drop me a line. Can't wait to hear more.

Looks good!
Alright so, do we organise a trip over there to explore the site? :D
-
Hi Fred I spoke with JP last night and he is also excited about the new site.
I'm up for a visit and Jp is also interested.
Now it's up to us to arrange a time which suits all!!!
Coming from Dublin on the N1 you will exit at junction 20 follow sign for carrickdale hotel and spa about 200m past the hotel take the road on your right and that will take you up to the top !!!
The first foto is the south slope looking over Dundalk
The second is the east slope looking at the town of warren point carling ford lough leading to the Irish Sea. On a good day you can see the Isle of Man
-

happy days Richard let me know when you's are thinking of going :D
-
Slope looks lovely, I would also be up for taking a trip to check it out.
-
Not that I have an OS map in front of me but I believe the location is called 'Clairemont Cairn' on the relevant OS map. I think that it is on the route of the annual 'puc fada', long distance hurling for anyone who doesn't know already, nothing to do with goats.
When are you lads thinking of trying it out? Its probably the best part of an hour from my base, so weather and visa's permitting I might get a day out as well.
-
Hi all,
Looks like I might be free on Sunday :?:
Now, for the slope, Richard, what is your view on the top for landing?
If I bring a 5m glider, is there space to land? (flat enough)
I had a quick look on the interweb, and hillwalking sites. Top, if I am looking at the same slope, seems rocky :?:
Plan is to fly a bigish glider, then, we'll know everything else will fly there! :D
Anyway, if we can fly 360 degrees, that looks like a possible very nice site for cross borders meetings :D
-
Hi Fred I'm unsure about this Sunday as the kids could be coming. I will let u know tomorrow.
Winds are looking good and from the north west !!
The top of the mountain is mainly heather !!! Landings should not be a bother to a man of you skills and talent lol
If you do need help I'm sure Andrew will land your big bird for you lol
-
 Best way to see something that crash and burn!
Or land in a tree
Yeah, let me know. We can plan something for the week end after anyway. Only Sunday free for me for a few hours.
-
Hi mr Fred ,, I have the kids on Sunday,, im going to take a small foamey glider and fly for an hour weather permitting !!!
I will be on the mountain at 2pm !!!
-
By the way everyone is welcome to join !!
-
As soon as I'm fit I'll be back on the hill. Shouldn't be too long now :D :D

Hi all weather/ winds were disappointing today !!
Jp and Alan managed a flight on the west slope !!
Both Fred and myself never took out our gliders ,,
Fred will post a report and fotos
Thanks for going today and looking forward to more meeting on flagstaff
-
Good evening to all :)
Apologies for the silence, work and all that :!:
Anyway, as we say, Vini, Vidi, Vici!
Well, Vici, is a big word, but we tried! :D
So, for the slope, it is very easy to access it, thanks to the motorway being right at the foot of it :D You get the bonus of a very nice view too!
But unfortunately, you can't really fly at 360 degrees like it was hoped
The westerlies side is the trouble one, the landing zone being quiet bumpy with a few small pine trees in the slope (very small ones and far away from each others if you see what I mean).
There is a good landing spot, that should work fine, but unfortunately, the day we were over there, the wind played balls! JP had some good flying, but the time to get there with Joe, the wind started to turn around and was slowly dying :!: We should have met earlier at the slope I guess, as the wind dropping was planned...
Anyway, the Easterlies side looks great! And down the road, still on the East side, looks like the slope is fantastic! 180 degrees flying at least, with smooth slopes, and what looks like bucket of room to land pretty much anything.
Maybe Joe and JP can confirm?
Oh, and this is where you get the best view too :)
So, many thanks to everybody for coming to check it out (JP, Richard, Joe), was a good day out, and now, we know! Another good site to put on the list, and great spot if you are living North of Dublin.
Here are a few photos...
The view to the east:

The view from the West:

We certainly were at the best spot for this slope, in a landing point of view.
Joe brought his new Quark. Great finish
Finished it at the car park, in a true sloper's way

Joe did the first flight that day... Unlucky, when he launched, this is the exact moment the wind decided to die and shift 45 degrees! Unlucky or what?! The Quark flew down, out of view
Joe went for the walk of shame, certainly expecting to bring it back in a plastic bag...But...
Coming from down below, Joe with what looks like an still new Quark!
And it was! Not a scratch! unbelievable!
But the long walk down took its tool! :P
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/tuytew.JPG)
Anyway, a good day out!
After about 3 hours up there, time to go home, decided to explore the area a bit more next time. Looks like lots of potentials for the guys living North :D
And a few more photos

Spot looks great guys, thanks for posting up the photos. My folks don't live too far from there so next time I am venturing up that way I will have to bring a model with me.

Quick update:
I was on Clermont Cairn a few weeks back and the site is still very much accessible. good few slopes in the area for easterlies most only suited for smaller gliders.
The Cairn itself is easily accessible and plenty of parking - looks like nearly all directions but N-NW have access to a usable slope although landing might be challenging.
Took a spin around and found amazing W facing slopes on the "Forest Drive" at Slieve Gullion. Wind was southernly when I was there which wasn't great but will certainly take a glider or two that way when we visit again.
