Title: Valentine Fly-In
Post by: Happy Days on February 10, 2010, 21:03:27 PM
I see from the RTE weather report this evening that the present high pressure we’re experiencing is set to continue right through the weekend. :D

I’m thinking that if conditions do continue as predicted it would be good opportunity for anyone who wanted to trim in a new plane, because there hasn’t been a great deal of wind, but what wind there is has been coming straight on to the north slope, so there’s been a fair amount of lift these past couple of afternoons up on Big L. (Christ, that was a long sentence wasn’t it! )

So, Alan? (K8.) Dennis? (Spirit Elite)

Anyone?

You could always bring along wives and lovers as well. After all, what could be more romantic than beautiful gliders gracefully weaving delicate patterns in a clear sky? :P

Hey Keith,

Week end looks like NE winds all the way  :D  Not too sure about the rain and cloud cover though  :?:

I am on a mission on Saturday... I must watch the France / Ireland game !
Hopefully, weather will be good, but if we can fly on Saturday, anyone fancy going to the Ryan's pub to watch the game after our flying session?

I can’t make Saturday I’m afraid.

Question, Fred; If you intend to watch the France/Ireland match in an Irish bar,…….which side are you gonna cheer for??? :?: :?:

I'd love to go Keith. But unfortunately I have some relative from Germany coming over on that day  :!:  :!: . Just my luck. If the weather is good I might try and get to Mt Leinster during the week. Have to wait and see.

Alan………….I wont be on the slope today, but I am planning on going up on Friday afternoon. May be see you then er?

Fred………Yea’ I think there are less chances of showers on Sunday. The only possible prob I can see is that the forecast is for possible snow showers on Saturday afternoon. Which might make getting up to Nine Stones on Sunday a bit tricky. Hopefully it’ll just be rain or sleet on Saturday.

Does this mean you're AC/DC Fred? I'd never have guessed!

Ok, looks like the weather is clearing up a bit for tomorrow at ML  :D  :D
Only unknown is the cloud cover.
Keith, can you do a "cloud cover special bulletin" in the morning for ML ?  8-[
I think I'll go for it, can't stay in the house any longer !!

Sure Fred, but a word to the wise………………..I spent over two hours sitting in Nine Stones car park today. The base of the clouds was just above the car.
(The west slope was clear, but that’s a hundred or so meters lower, and the wind was from the north anyway :!: )

I thought about flying off the north slope but feared that if the clouds came any lower while I was flying I’d loose sight of my plane. That has happened to me before!

But yes,….for you darling I’ll report on the cloud situation as soon as it gets light enough to see the Big L.

I can’t make it tomorrow I’m afraid :(  so I hope to be up there on Sunday

Keith

Just checked the forecast, looks like ML will be relatively clear tomorrow, but a bit of rain forecasted for Sunday  :(

Anyway, asw15, dg1000, wazeco, destiny and a few other toys ready to go !  :D

Good Morning gentlemen! The time now is 07.13 and here follows the first weather report of the morning:-

Overcast sky with lighter patches. Small amounts of drizzly rain.

Wind direction ….slightly variable -North/North West.

Wind speed, (At my location) <10Km/h

The lower 30% of Big L is clear of cloud, but the slopes and top are completely covered at the moment

Sunrise is in just under an hours time. Let’s see if that big ol’ thermo-nuclear furnace can have some positive input on the matter. :)

The ol’ “Currant Bun” (Sun) is above the horizon and going it’s work on the atmosphere.
The overcast sky is starting to break up a little with some very small spots of blue sky showing through. Precipitation has stopped.

Wind direction is now NNE.

Wind speed has increased slightly to around 15Km/h

Temperature is 2 degrees C

The mountain is slowly emerging from under its duvet of cloud with the bottom 50% now visible. The slopes, however, are still covered.
On this basis I would expect the slopes to be flyable from about 11 or 12midday. (But I have been known to be wrong!!!)

This photo was taken at 08.13. Big L is under the cloud and to the right of the picture. (If you can make it out!)

Good Luck you guys! :D

Hey Keith. May be you should set up a web-cam on your house and point it at Mt Leinster. Live updates.  :D  :D

Yea, only problem is that I can’t actually see Mt. L. from my house. :!:  I live on the south side of a hill and Mt. L. can only be seen from the north side of the hill. So I have a 30 second drive from my house to the top of the hill to be able to see the mountain.

No matter………..I just charge all members of I.S.R. 1€ per weather report!!! :P  You wouldn’t object to that,…..would you Alan?

Good day ! Flew everything I had in my boot, except for the DG  :(

And sorry again for your rudder Keith      8-[
Fingers crossed for next week end now  :D

At home, in the workshop, it took me precisely 90 seconds to fix that rudder Fred. Forget about it.

Nice to fly with you again. :D
