As the NIMSA boys will tell you, I NEVER have only one project on the go. Along with the Jart, I'll be building a PSS SU25 Frogfoot from the Griffiths & Briggs Plan. 44 in wingspan with foam wing and tail.
Pic of the plan
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/billscottni/frogfoot%20plan.jpg)
Plan called for 1/8 liteply formers. Didn't have any liteply so bagged some glass cloth front & back on 3/32. Should be more than strong enough!
To be continued...........
-
Looks great Bill. We shall have to have a PSS day now!
Maybe Fred will finish his B-25?? and I believe he has an Aermacchi in the post too!
Like the vacuumed former idea. Will store that away for future use.
Would it be good for wing ribs as well? Easy to sand balsa and then a quick layer of glass for strength!
-
The free flight biys cut a large rib blank ie the right profile but maybe 20 x the thickness of a standard rib. They then bag carbon onto the top and bottom of this and once it's all set, they "sice" of ribs at 1/16 or 3/32 thickness. Every rib is identical and they're all carbon capped.
Hope I'v explained it well enough :?:
-
Clever B******s. Thats usin' you knoggin.
Do they lay 20x layers of balsa and shape that as a block in the traditional way then bag it with carbon and slice before the carbon is totally cured or one solid block and slice it with a machine I wonder
-
solid sliced on a band saw
-
Looking good Bill !
Yep, B25 still on top of the cabinet...
Seems like more and more PSS are being built, can be a good idea to organise a PSS event next year... Anyone interrested ? :?:
Might motivate me to finish the B25 ! :D
Still at this stage :
And still have a scale F16 in a box!
-
finish it! go on go on go on go on go on! :D :D
-
:P
I'll have a look this week at the work involved on that one.. Not much left to be done if I remember :D :?:
-
Well why not finish?
It is no good to man nor beast the way it is!
-
You owe me a plan for that one Fred, remember :D.
-
I'm sure myself and John would be up for a PSS event.
-
You owe me a plan for that one Fred, remember :D.
Hey Alan,
True ! I did not forgot! :D
And I still have your Retroplane T-Shirt !
Ok, I'll finish it and post the photos on the B25 thread so. Will do that between 2 things on the Grunau baby for a brain break :P
-
And I still have your Retroplane T-Shirt !
Oh yes. I just need to get this dame K8 finished then I can meet you at the slope and collect it from you.
-
An I have a lovely Fouga in Aer Corps colours. Winter is prob the best time for the stiff winds to fly pss though in my experience.
-
Will build a Magister in the next few months myself. Was thinking of doing the silver air Corp scheme too! They used to do formation training over my house when I was a kid. Was yours from a kit Ralph?
-
thought that might catch your interest, yes it was from a kit, I believe you have the moulds. I can send you a few pics next week so you dont have the same reg on your plane
-
Ah go on ! French colours!
Or the silver version !
Funny enough, as far as I know, the Air Corps Fouga Magister were all Cognac base decommissionned ones !
My Grd mother house was a turning point for the airbase... They were flying very low over the house pretty much all day ! Then, Epsilon came in, and fly much higher now... (and in silence compared to the Fouga!)
Good thing is that we were always the first to see all the displays etc etc, training and formation runs always took place in front of the house :D
Neighbourgs hated it... I loved it ! :D
-
The irish team were called the Silver Swallows! Four Magisters. Very easy to spot with the day-glow nose and tip tanks.

The photo in your last post is not working Fred
Sorry Bill. Straying a bit off thread here.
-
Fixed.
Yep, sorry Bill, a bit Off topic big time here ! I can create a general discussion / project thread :?:
More OT : http://www.traditions-air.fr/unit/avion/avionspaf02.htm
The Silver version is one of my favourite for the PAF
-
Maybe we should recreate the silver swallows?? I have mold for the Magister alter all :D
Sorry Bill thats it. I'm finished.
-
Not only off-topic but also spelling in American mold = mould
-
Well now I really am embarrassed
Stupid computer only gives me US english!
-
As do most!! Microsoft think it's the only version.
English Mk1
US English MkII and as with microsofts various incarnations, not necessarily better :P
-
A bit more work. Freed the formers from the glass and tidied them up a bit ready for use in the fuselage.
The only former missing is F1 which I'm going to cut from 1/4" ply
-
Bill
I have been looking at some pics of the frogfoot in action, therefore, I think yours will need a stores package under each wing, so I have a great planes set of bombs etc which I used on an old F15 years ago, all you need to do is to add a set of rails and glue the stores on. They are light and stong, would look great in flight.
-
Sounds good John.
Add a sound system with gunfire and we're really rockin'
-
Now your rockin Bill, I will hunt out the stores and drop them in with you soon.
-
Thanks John
-
bit more action.
Formers glued in to 1/8 sides and battery box installed. Access to the battery is only available from under the wing, so it gets slid into the tube.

Hi Bill
Found a great paint scheme from 'Condor decals'. we could scan the decals and print a larger set for the frogfoot, see below :
What do you think, cool or what !
-
Could manage the bottom one. Not good enough with the airbrush to do the splinter effect
I have quite a collection of pics of the frogfoot in various colours. There's quite a nice one from the training school in red, white and blue

Same as John in colour :
But also found this one... Look nice !
-
Like that last scheme Fred. Wouldn't fancy painting it though! :?
-
Like that last scheme Fred. Wouldn't fancy painting it though! :?
That scheme is on a "plastic" model and the colours look very flat to me.
Have the full size pic at home, will post later.
I still fancy the red white and clue training shool scheme. Its bright enough to be visible when flying, but still looks simple enough to paint. But, I'm open to alternatives!
Still a bit of building before I need to start worrying too much about it!
-
Guys, the frogfoot is a MEAN LADY, so Bill lets give her a MEAN LOOK ! and chase all the hang gliders of the slopes when she takes flight.
-
A little more progress. Printed out templates for cutting the wing & tail. They're stuck to formica and will get cut out shortly.
This is the reason progress has been a bit slow, but it's now finished and should get a maiden shortly. 1.5m parallel chord 32 degcree sweep back. tip fins and a small centre pod for the RX & batt.
-
Getting there Bill ! :D
Nice looking wing too ! No flying this week end ? Crap weather in Dublin yesterday ! :!:
-
Bloody wonderful flying in Wexford yesterday (pm) :D :D
Where were you guys???
Keith
-
At home, sick
Rain almost all day, relatively decent in the afternoon, and big winds !
-
Sick? On a Sunday!! What a silly person you are Fred.
Sensible people go sick on a Monday!
(I never could understand French mentality  )
-
Bloody wonderful flying in Wexford yesterday (pm) :D :D
Where were you guys???
Keith
John & I sat at the hill for over an hour waiting on it lifting, all to no avail!
Plenty of wind 20mph + but hissing down with it.
-
Sorry for the delay in this build, I've been putting together a demo model for the Area to use at shows/exhibitions and it had to be finished for a show at Kings Hall, Belfast yesterday and today. Can now get back to building my own stuff :D
This is also the reason for the delay on the Jart
It's 1/4 " Lexan with all the gubbins and linkages on full view for showing to groups and explaining how it all operates.
-
Nice Bill !
For the laugh... Center it, and launch it on a good day ! :D
Maybe I'm dead serious on that one :?: 8)
-
Wing loading would be HUGE!!! Lexan ain't Light!!!
-
No worries, we have huge lift ! :D
Might even need some ballast these days ! :D
-
A wee bit more done this weekend.
The two engine pods are framed up and just need sheeted. Started to mark out foam for the wings only to discover all the bits I have are about an inch short!!
Wings may have to wait until January. :!:
Over the next couple of days, I hope to get the tail cut, ie two all flying elevators and the vertical fin.
After that I may move across to the Jart until I get the foam for the wings :?:
-
Quite on this build for a while, so I did a little today.
After looking in a lot of websites for a bellcrank of the right size.. I gave up and bought some pcb from Maplins and fabricated my own.
Sorry about the pic. My camera's playing up, so this is taken with my phone
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/billscottni/bellcrank.jpg)
Going to do some more work on the engine pods tonight and possibly cut the wing tomorrow. Will start with the tails and see how it goes.
-
Got the sheeting done top and bottom of the fuz today after installing the control horn:
Noew ned to start shaping the fuz edges to get a "slightly" more rounded shape. First of the top decking has been shaped in blue foam and is currently sitting on top of the radiator with sheeting drying. This piece will run from the back of the cockpit to the LE of the wing..
All in all a productive weekend, (for a change!) :?: :?:
-
Good stuff Bill. Sure you're flying along now!!
-
Got a bit more done tonight: Tails are cut. I used a single point taper cut to do these as they are small and quite highly tapered. One end of the wire is stationary and the other end swings through an arc, cutting the foil as it goes. Very pleased with the results.
This is the cutter. The far end is on a pivot (Screw in this case)
Planform of the tails
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/billscottni/Frog%20foil%20sm.jpg)
The airfoil section is SD8020, fully symetrical. Will have a balsa skin adde and a balsa LE
-
Hi Bill
Looks good, you will have to show me the cutter in action when I am down your way next. I would like to try this method myself for small wing cutting.
-
No problem John. check your e-mail, I have a website coding quesstion for you!!! :?:
-
Haven't managed much this week. The job as sceretary of NIAA has taken up a fair bit of time in the last fortnight :!:
Ordered a pilot for the model, (can't have an empty cockpit!!) Bought from Pete's Pilots on Ebay
http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Petes-Pilots__W0QQ_armrsZ1
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/billscottni/pilot.jpg)
Need to give him a paint job when I find a decent pic of a Russian pilot
-
Well, lack of wind and forecast snow showers meant no flying today
Instead I got my a**e in gear and cut the foam wings and fin for the Frogfoot. I'm currently using a drop arm cutter for wings and as the fin is highly tapered, I use a single point cutter for that.
Using a drop arm cutter, you have an arm fixed at one end and by attaching the pull cords for the bow at different points, it pulls the ends of the bow through the foam at different speeds.
All set up and ready to go
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/billscottni/DA3s.jpg)
Bottom template for the narrow chord at the tip
I'm waiting on a Hobby CNC kit coming from the US to complte my CNC cutter, which will make these cutters obsolete. They are useful for one off cuts and will satisfy the neds of most modellers
-
The obligatory "Bench Fly" pic!!
Lot of sanding and shaping to do before paint
And a couple of vids I took while doing the cutting. Quality isn't great, but it does show how the two types work :?:

-
Hi Bill
Looks good, you we have to show me how that system works, the wings look perfect, good job!!
-
No problem John. It's definitely not rocket science and mine is a very Heath Robinson set up
I have small computer program that calculates the attachment points depending on the taper of the wing and its chord. After that you set it up, put the bow in place, turn on the heat and leave it alone until it's finished the cut :) :)
-
Bit more work done in the last week. Wings are now sheeted, little bit of glass and CF tow at the trailing edge to allow me to sand to a thin TE
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/billscottni/SU%20wings1sm.jpg)
I also finished the sheting on the fin and tails. Tails have a surface finish of tissue and polyurethane varnish, which will hopefully take paint well :?:
John appeared the other night with a little pressie for moi. A tucano that had been built for a small power plant in the nose. That's now removed and the nose is being faired in
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/billscottni/Tucano%20at%20beginningsm.jpg)
Needs a bit of a refurb, but I should have both models ready for the PSS event
After all this work, the shop is not as tidy as it could be!!!
-
Looking good Bill !
Like the Tucano too !!
Fred - Just realised that he seriously need to remove the fingers and start to do a PSS !!
-
You'd better Fred, by my count 17 days to go :D
-
Oh boy !
And 4 PSS to be build in the garage...
What's the name of that drug again ? :?:
-
I think they call that drug wishful thinking Fred! :P
Nice work on the frogfoot Bill. It's coming along well. Like the Tucano.
-
Both should be at least flyable for the PSS. Maybe not finish painted, but flyable
-
Bit more work done this weekend.
Should be painting the primer on both by Tues at latest. Sukhoi will probably stay in primer for this event, but Tucano is getting a simple black scheme, so should be done in time.
