Title: The Big L fly-in 28th 29th Sept
Post by: Richard Boyd on September 06, 2013, 07:03:06 AM
Date : 28-29 September 2013
Location : Mt Leinster Co. Wexford
Event name : ISR Slope Fly-In - Open to all gliders!
Contact : Fred - Fred@gliderireland.net - http://www.gliderireland.net

The summer is over and to tell the truth I have had very little flying due to operations and house renovation so I'm so so looking forward to our annual trip to the big L !!!
Andrew and John are also getting their planes prepared for the trip and this year for me it's going to be very special !!!
Why you ask ????
Well my friends I have 2 very special guest that are travelling the whole way from Lithuania to join us !!!!!
Donatas Pauzuolis and Richardas Siumbrys are going to have there first experience of slope gliding in Ireland.
This is going to be one special weekend of flying and having fun with friends.
I really hope we have a great turn out of pilots as you will meet 2 really great guys that are extremely top class pilots.

Er,……….”2 extremely top class pilots!”  OMG  , suddenly I feel ‘extremely’ inadequate. ( I hope they wont laugh at my attempts at flying. :( )

Impressive video! :D   Thermaling off of the roof of, what I think was, a hanger.  Ha! Extremely agile DLG’s 8)

I’m Looking forward to meeting them. ( Donatas and Richardas I mean,…not the DLGs. Well, I’d like to also see the DLG’s   …….I’m digging myself into a hole here lads. Think I’d better shut up!)

Alas I’ll only be at the Big L on Sunday.  I have to attend a family reunion in the UK and I wont arrive home till the Saturday.

Let’s just hope the weather holds up for us.

Phew, well that’s a relief! :)

Yes I’ve seen Donatas flying indoor before, and I’ve enjoyed his little tail about Natasha’s desire for “Big Propellers” (Such suggestive lyrics  ) Just as a passing thought,……is Natasha coming to the Big L as well? :P

By the way, I’m sorry to hear about your operations. I had to go into hospital a couple of years back myself. (To have my wallet opened  ) I hate coming out of those general anaesthetics, I always feel so groggy for the rest of the day. Although I s’pose it’s better to feel groggy, than not come out of the anaesthetic at all!

I’ll look forward to meeting our friends from the continent at the end of the month.

So, they keep having radio glitches if I analyse the video!    :P

That is very good! Good to receive some flyers (and not any of them of top of that!   ) from Eastern Europe!

Moss house is fully booked (thanks John) and I'll bring extra beds with me, just in case, but sound like we will have fun!
Bring food and drinks! I'll have the BBQ too with sausages, buns etc etc (the usual!)

Ok, now, I'm out of Orgeat sirup for the Ricard!! APERO!!!  :D  :D

And I'll kill a poor chicken next week for the weather Gods!  :D

That’s about right Richard, half an Englishman, for half the time!

Well, give Kees a call and tell him to get his butt over here! Welcome to Ilja, glad you can join the happy throng  There’s only one rule at this event Ilja, you’re not allowed to fly (slope soarers)  better than me on your first attempt. (Otherwise I’ll cry!!)

This is indeed turning into an international event.
Only hope the weather holds up for us.

For the slope, same as the other ones.. But you have to walk (that's where the lazy part of my brain kicks in!  :P )

Bring some of your F3P stuff, just in case. Donatas might give us a flying lesson!

And don't look at the forecast too much! They can barely tells you what the weather will looks like tomorrow at 100%, so in 4 days, in a very localized spot.. good luck! (not the first time they say rain etc etc, and we have the opposite!)

Just come, enjoy the bbq, drinks and banter. We will fly!

every hour or so ..

Morning Men!!! (No need to stand to attention lads,…just sit and relax. )

I’ve returned from my travels to distant lands having caught a cold virus from my grandson. :(  Non the less I’m looking forward to some flying in easterly winds. Never done that before on the Big L so I may need some coaching. Any offers???…………(no, I thought not  )

At the moment it’s raining here near sleepy Enniscorthy, the mountain is covered in cloud, and there’s no wind at all, but hopefully that’ll change over the next couple of hours.
Disappointed not to have seen any picies from yesterday, no doubt you were all too drunk to post any last night……typical!

So I’ll look forward to seeing all your happy & overhung faces in a couple of hours time. :D

Little Keith (with a sore throat and a runny nose)

Oh! Special mention to Andy, who my misses thinks is gorgeous looking. (Personally I don’t agree, I think she just sees him through WINE coloured glasses........... Private joke, lads  )

Hello everyone!  :D

Finally regained some brain functions, time to clean up a few photos, remove the ones that no one wants to ever see again, and put what I can remember into a few lines!    :D

Another year, another huge success!
The wind Gods were not all in our favours, with a wind a few degrees off the ideal position to use the closest Easterly slope to maximum lift (very narrow band of lift, some huge sinks and turbulences... That's what makes the flying interesting!  :P ), but some less lazy pilots setup a "flying site B" 15 minutes further with better lift on the Sunday, lead by the SFRC lads

Anyway, everybody flew, and counted up to 8 gliders of all sizes in the air at site A, and 5 at site B at the same time on the Sunday
Lots of gliders in the sky means a lot of people to fly them!

We had 22 pilots on the Saturday, and 20 on the Sunday! The entire island was represented, with flyers coming from Galway, Cork, Dublin, Northern Ireland with everything in between... And also from Lithuania! (more later on that one!   ) and some almost came on a boat (hi Ralph  :P )

What else to say? Another epic night at the Moss (still singing Rock n' Roll at 3am...  :D )some good flying, and most important, a big bunch of like minded people with good craic!
It is actually very good to see that many people, from pretty much all around the country, gathering together like old friends or family! (I will not go emotional and all that, but you know what I mean! I try to get my head straight, so apologies in advance if it's not clear, I'll correct that after a proper night sleep!)

Oh, and special mention to one of the best girl I know in this hobby, Roisin, who is like a mother to all of us! (a young mother!  :P )
We drink, sing, do silly stuff... while Roisin prepared an absolute feast for all of us, pretty much working all evening feeding us and keeping us "decent!
Respect!

Ok, so, that's pretty much it for me, I don't know what else to say, and some might pinch in for a better report. Just wow. That's sum it all for me...

By the way, we had a bunch of people coming from the East... Buddy lead and all that, these guys needed to learn a few tricks, so they came and joined us...
Or not!
It's not every day that you fly with a World Champion, and some of the top 3 glider pilots in the World!
We saw some good fight and huge land out (the Carlsberg cup was won by Richardas!) I believe they had great fun, and I can say that, from all of us, Donatas flew the most this week end. That EasyGlider put on at least 10 hours easy! (will check the timer on the radio).

Just a shame the conditions were a tad marginal as we would have seen some proper glider aerobatics, but we had some good laughs!      :D

Anyway, at some point, we gave Donatas a plane, with a motor... And Oh My God! That guy can fly! Total respect! I did not knew you could do stuff like that with a plane! (and a Wot4 electric... a trainer!   )
Very down to Earth bunch of guys, and I believe they will come back in force next year!  :D
But Richard will certainly tell us more about them and their Irish slope soaring experience  :D

That's it for me for now! I'm putting a gallery together, I'll post the link later, but once again, many thanks to all of you for coming and making these meeting so specials!

Post by: Happy Days on September 30, 2013, 19:48:01 PM
I’d never flown on Mt Lienster in a easterly wind before, and now I know why. Fortunately on Sunday the wind was just ever-so-slightly north of east enabling a narrow corridor of lift to form on the N.E. edge of the “north” slope. Alas, if the models flew outside of this ‘corridor of lift’ the consequences could prove quite dire as there were masses of Sink.  (Ask me how I know).

The obvious down side of this situation was that flying could prove rather ‘taxing’. The plus side was that by flying in difficult situations one learns a lot about the models performance envelope and indeed the pilots performance abilities as well!

Hopefully in future we will be lucky and have winds blowing straight on to the slopes. (Preferably at 80 kph, ….. although that’s only my personal preference!)

Anyway, to return to the matter of last Sunday. Fortunately there were loads of other similar minded people at the Glide In to “chew the cud” with and exchange stories of past events.
Personally I’d been hoping to catch up on the latest scandals :D  from around the country as we had pilots there from most of the 32 counties of Ireland, along with a crazy Frenchman, wrinkly Englishman (yours truly) and our three new friends from the Baltic country of Lithuania.

Now I have to say I was rather disappointed by these lads from eastern Europe. I mean, you would think that being guests at the glide in they would allow us ‘regulars’ show them how best to fly on the Big L.
Not a bit of it!  Right from the start it was Them showing Us how it should be done. WOW! And what made it worse was that they weren’t even flying their own models!

T’was a very humbling experience and I take my hat off to all three of them. ( Next time they come please can I book a lesson or two with them, then they can teach me how to fly like they do! ) Well done lads, I hope you enjoyed yourselves and will come back and fly with us again. If only so you can look down on your models in flight.  (Lithuania, I’m told, is very flat so they normally only get to see their models in flight by looking upwards. )

Another plus side of the event was the temperature. Although a wee bit chilly first thing in the morning, and despite a strong wind, it warmed up somewhat by midday and wasn’t too cold for exposed fingers. The sun shone for a good part of the day and for those who did find it too cold for comfort Freds BBQ ( a permanent fixture of glide-ins these days) could be utilized to bring comfort to other important parts of the body.

So who came? :?:  Answer: too many to mention. I was only there on the Sunday and was glad to see Dave Kelly who hasn’t been present for a few years and Joe, (from Dublin) (I don’t know his surname I’m afraid) was seen flying a Weasel. A full showing from the boys of the North swelled our numbers apart from Bill Scott who is still unable to make the journey I understand. (Poor Bill)
Ralph showed up en-route from a Dublin Kayaking contest along with Mr Buckley and Kieran. Big Keith and Stephen were first to arrive on Sunday along with Stephens son Tom who took to the skies and was rewarded by JP who generously donated a powered wing to the little lad. I think his dad (Stephen) wasn’t quite sure what to do. Say, “Thank you to JP” or cry at the thought that he now has to buy a TX for Tom! Oh the joys of parenthood, Stephen.

There may well have been others there whom I have missed, please forgive me if your name hasn’t been mentioned.

Well that just about does it I think. I’m off to nurse the symptoms of my Man Flue. I’ve been told that a guaranteed cure for such an affliction relates to the use of a bottle of aspirin and a bottle of whisky. Evidentially you rub the aspirins on your chest and drink the whisky. I’m not sure if the aspirins do any good but either way I wont know anything about it having drunk a bottle of whisky.
I’ll see you all again when I’ve sobered up!

Keith. (Little)

Well a great weekend albeit one of the most frustrating as a novice pilot :-( but a fantastic learning experience. Indulge me for a minute.....

My dad introduced me to fishing as a young lad of four years old and in that sport I have made life long friends and have met people I'm privileged to know. To see my young lad, Tom, embraced over the weekend was heart warming, it's shown him what good people are about and that he can learn from those around him. He's got some heros in the gang, Fred with his 'manbra' and JP with the coolest of planes.... And little keith as the training guru with ultimate patience and of course 'the buddy box'

This weekend showed me that my young lad has found a group and a sport to invest his time and discipline. To top off the weekend with such a remarkable gift as his own plane was just exceptional..  JP thank you for extending the hand to a young lad to help him up, to Richard thank you for the battery, a simple gesture, but the icing on the cake.

Yes it will cost me a fortune but what a great investment.. ...the new wing has taken pride of place in Tom's bedroom and we'll hopefully get out this week to give it a try....

A massive thanks....

To top this off, Tom said in the car on the way home 'Dad, I'm going to tie that wing to a young lad like me when I'm bigger and have more of my own planes....."

It doesn't get better than that

Great reports from Fred and Keith.

Our guests have returned to Lithuanian buzzing with first the slope pilots of Ireland and secondly with the feeling of flying off mountain and especially flying below yourself !!!!

I never heard anyone so pasionate about returning back to fly again.
As Keith said Lithuanian is a flat country and they only fly thermals looking up.

Richardas "the long walker" has already made arrangements to transport gliders to Dublin for next year.

So many thanks to so many people for making this trip so special.

Roll on 2014

finally getting around to thanking people for making our trip (kieran wallace and i) such a memorable week-end, it took me until this evening to clear out the mobile club house.  ok, the wind may not have co-operated, but i think, the fun, jokes and laughter more than made up for it.

big thanks to roisin and john for food and diana for the fire water. thanks fred for the mini tool boxes, already coming in handy and to andrew, for singing just about every song ever written, amazing man!!

great to put faces to names too, most enjoyabe meeting stephan, son tom(he'll be teaching you before long stephan, watch this space!!), brendan and others to numerous to mention

looking forward to next year's get-togethers already.

as regards the sneaky sleeper,i'm wondering if that's young j.p. having a bit of a nod-off?  i discovered a cap with the word 'axi' on it in the camper and if the owner would like to pm me his address, i'll post it back to him asap, i think it might be yours john.

couple of photos to follow as soon as i get them off the camera.  gb

Well, what a fantastic weekend, was great to see such a good turnout for the last event of the year. The wind wasn't perfect but the craic and company made up for it. It was good to see a few new faces and Richard's friends from Lithuania and Russia, I hope they bring home some fond memories of their weekend with us mad Irish glider pilots.  Yes Gerry the hat does belong to me, I will forward address to you.
Ok some photos from the weekend taken by photographer/cook Roisin:
