That's it, I can't take it anymore !!! :!: :!: :!: :!:
Roads to Kilakee are still dodgey, but this week end, if the wind is in the right direction, I just go fo it !
I need my fix !!
-
Our winds are forecast to be light northerly so no chance for me. My fix wil have to be a electric in the park!
Wish you better luck!
-
Yes, I know the feeling Fred. I haven’t flown a glider for 2 months! ….2 MONTHS!!
Big L is still snow covered, I don’t think my little car would get up the wiggly road. :(
(Thank god for indoor flying……..Not quite the same but at least I can keep my “fingers in”.) (If you’ll pardon the expression! )
K.
-
Fingers in eh ?
Well, we'll see, Sunday looks like SW winds, will try to get to Kilakee with the ASW15.
The worse part is that it is also too cold to work in the garage ! :!:
Or I need to do this indoor plane I have ! But no indoor venues around here
-
I know the feeling. Its been about two mouths since I "tried" to fly the K8. She's all repaired, but all this waiting to fly it again is killing me.
-
Your welcome to join us flying indoor at Kiltealy Fred. (And anyone else.) :D On Sundays we normally fly from around 08.30 till about 11.00.
Sometimes, if the hall isn’t being used for sports, we just keep flying till we get hungry, and then go home. (I’ve been there till 13.00 before now :D )
The down side is that it’s a long way from Dublin to Kiltealy. :( But on the plus side at least you know you will get some flying in. :D
If the snow has melted off the access road to Big L. you might also get some gliding in the afternoon…….bonus! :D :D
-
Thanks for the offer Keith :D
But yep, a bit far for me... But why not a day when we can go slope soaring (flying real man stuff :P ) after an indoor session ! :D
Ok, I must start the Tensor 4D I have so ! Just in case !
-
Tensor 4D er?,….. So you’re a biplane man like myself…….Good on ya’ Fred!
Good idea. 3 - 4D indoor flying (or on my case, Crashing) in the morning followed by,……as you put it,. “Real” flying in the afternoon.
Sounds great,…….all we need now is the weather and a 50K wind (Some things never change!)
-
Right boys
I have had it, NO flying for weeks, my wife has a big smile on her face for weeks, due to the amount of shopping that she has done, with my poor body in tow. AHHHHHHH!!!
Stuff it, lets all go to florida for the sun, warm afternoons ,calm winds and lots of cool beers between fligths, mmmmm, one can dream!!
-
Yes - no flying for ages. I did manage to get to Killakee on St Stephen's Day. Boy was it cold - lasted about 15 minutes in very bumpy air and then beat a hasty retreat. Not much fun. Nothing since then. Started a building project instead - a 1/5 scale ASW 20 in wood - after much fret sawing, proud owner now of half a planked fuselage! About to flip it over and build on other half. Slow work as usual.
-
Errr,............pictures Peter, where are the pictures? :?:
We mortals like to see how the experts do it! :D
-
Hi Peter, long time no see !!
Asw20, certainly my favorite modern glider along with the DG1000 !!
Will watch that with interrest (photos?? :P )
I can't remember, you flew the Pilatus ? :?:
Keith, yep, why having only 1 set of wings when you can have 2 ! :D The tensor have a strange look anyway, but we'll se after a few crashes, I'm tempted to re-use all the electronic into a free flight conversion instead (something like a piper cub maybe... :?: )
John, we will not blend very well in Florida, we are not 365 years old ! For Keith, sound like home ! :P :P
Fingers crossed for Kilakee tomorrow, but sound like the wind is a bit too Southerly :!:
-
Bloody Cheek!
K.
-
I love you too Keith
-
:?: Just saw on the news that the roads going to Mt L are destroyed !
Keith, have you tried to go p there in the wek end ? :?:
-
Just saw it too. I hope at least one road is accesable, because they said it could take months to fix them. That means we may not be able to get to Mt Leinster for months :( :( :(. You'll have to be our scout Keith. Any info?
-
Yes, I saw those reports on the news this evening. :(
I haven’t attempted to go up to Mt. L. since before xmas because of the snow, ( of which there is still some up at the very top which I can see from where I live,) and low cloud.
For the next few days the winds are due to be from an easterly direction which is not much use for flying off Big L. But on Friday westerly breezes are forecast, so I might take my old jeep  and venture up to the west slope.
I’ll have a good scout around to establish which of the two access roads are usable for normal vehicles and report back on this thread.
On the news report that I saw, on RTE 6-1, the road shown as unusable was the road leading up from the Borris Road (Kiltealy) side on the mountain. That’s the one I normally use.
By not showing the road from the Bunclody side might mean that that one is still usable. (I would think there has to be reasonable access on one of the roads, for the workers at the tv transmitter to be able to use :) )
Like I said, I’ll let you know what the state of both roads are as soon as I know.
Keith
-
:?: Just saw on the news that the roads going to Mt L are destroyed !
Fred, have you got a chance to visit Kilakee last w.end ?
How does R115 look like these days ?
-
Hey everyone!
Don't tell me I'm actually the one that managed to fly for the past 1 and 1/2 months! :D
While spending the christmas time in Portugal and everytime it stopped raining and sometime even waiting inside he car for it to stop I manged to fly.
Need to share some videos.
I was thinking that a nice fresh air and quietness from the Irish mountains would do me ok.
I was wondering if next weekend the weather was going to be ok to do that.
But with damaged roads.. despite I like nice off-road trails. :D
-
Right, the good news is that the roads up to Mt. L. are passable. :D
I travelled up the road from Bunclody to Nine Stones this afternoon, and although the road shows clear signs of distress in places, any average domestic car could navigate the sections of pot holes and small areas of subsidence. :)
In addition, the road from the Kiltealy/Borris road up to Nine Stones is also usable. :)
So we have full use of the slopes guys. Hoorrar!
(Believe it or not, there is still quite a few cms. of snow in the shaded areas of the mountain )
Did I get any flying in today? NO!…..no wind. It’s been nearly three months now since I’ve enjoyed any “action” on the slopes.
I guess I’ll just have to look forward to some action in the bedroom. (Well,……….it helps to pass the time. )
K.
-
Tharts good news Keith. John and I intedn to get down a fe wtimes this year, so good to know we can get to the hil.
re Bedroom action.....................Don't let the wife know your building on her bdecovers
-
Flying in your bedroom now!!
You must need a very small one for that!
Good news on the road front. Been a very long time since I've been up there. :!:
Thanks for checking it out Keith
-
Thats great Keith :D :D. Thanks. If the weather is good next weekend I might try get get up there and finally get the k8 flying.
-
Building and flying model aircraft in the bedroom is not quite what I was thinking of.
(What sheltered lives you guys have lead……..The pair of you really ought to get out more!)
As for next weekend,…………… I’d like to think we might get up there.
The mountain has been plagued with low cloud for weeks at a time, or, like today, clear skies but no wind! It’s really frustrating.
As you say Alan, may be next weekend you’ll get a chance to put your K8 through it’s paces. :D
Saturday is looking good at the moment in terms of wind but there’s also low cloud/showers forecast for the afternoon. As always, we’ll have to wait and see. :!:
Are you in Ireland Joe, or are you still ‘earning a crust’ travelling?
K.
-
Good to hear Mount Leinster is still accessible. I tried Kilakee last weekend - but the road was still blocked by thick snow drifts so gave up. Tried again yesterday - road now open but still m-thick banks of snow piled beside the road. Unfortunately although there was a light NW breeze, fog was condensing as the breeze met the mountain. Travelled down to cloud base on the lower road and spent a half hour flying close and low in the mist which came an went. A small fix. Roll on spring-time.
Got caught out by the Airtraffic Controller's strike during the week and had to transit via Paris CdeG - where I got to see an A380 take off. Now that is some sight!!
-
When the mother of my kids was pregnant with our first child we both spent the last few months of the pregnancy on “tender hooks.” Any slight twinge, any uncomfortable feeling, any movement by the baby sent us scurrying to the phone, to call the hospital and tell them that we were on our way.
These days, every few hours I search the weather forecasters web pages looking to see if any of them are predicting a chance that Mt. Lienster. will be flyable. :(
I constantly stare at the skies over the Mountain to see if there is any break in the cloud cover. I strain my eyes in the hopes that the prevailing winds will bring a clear section of sky towards the slopes. All to no avail.
:( :(
Then, this afternoon, I saw patches of clear sky over the mountain. I checked the wind speed, 20Kmh., that’ll do! :D (Just)
OOOOO! It was such a wonderful feeling. Back on the slope, with a glider in the air and the wind in my face.
For me there’s nothing more therapeutic. :D :D (Well, almost)
Not the best lift I’ve ever had on the north slope. The wind was slightly to the west. And it was a bit,……er…..how shall I put it……CHILLY. Especially with snow still around. But Boy did it feel good!
The Phase 6 and Skua put in a passable performance, and the car’s heater provided one of life’s little comforts between flights.

I'll be BACK!!
-
We got out too!! But a bit more snow than you!

A good days flying in -4C with 12 - 15mph wind from Santa in the North
John's DG is now flying well after he sorted the tail incidence and he got the little MB339 flying, although the wind was a bit low.
Just to prove the Fiu is a parcel shelf model

Some nice pictures Bill.
Hey Keith. What time were you up at Mt Leinster. I was there at around 2.30pm. Unfortunately I was not there for long because this happened.
OOPS

Now I have nothing to fly, except the K8 which is ready to Fly again.
-
OH! That’s a pity Alan. What happened? Not another radio problem again!? :? (Had you done a range check before you flew?)
Er…to answer your question I was at Big L from 1 till 3.30pm Can’t understand how we didn’t meet? :?: I was on the north slope for most of the time although I did try the west slope at about 1.30 but found the lift very patchy. So I returned to Nine Stones.
……………………………….............
Well done Bill and John for braving the weather. Bare hands in sub zero temperatures John!!!!! I’m very impressed. :P
And Peter got out last weekend, well done you.
It seems gradually we are all making our way out onto the slopes again.
(I texted Fred when I was on the slope. Told him I was having a great time. He texted me back saying he was ill and stuck indoors. Poor chap. :()
-
I was on the west slope. The wind was almost blowing directly onto it when I was there. Did not think of going up to the nine stones. I had a feeling that there may have been someone flying up there. I could see some people on the slope.
There was no radio problem with my model. I was coming to land and the model was only about a meter off the ground with the wings level. Then I'm not sure if it was a control input from me or a sudden gust of wind but the model suddenly turned and the left wingtip hit the ground and the model cartwheeled resulting in what you see in the pictures. That west slope can certainly create a lot of turbulence.
-
Good to hear of all the flying activity. I got an hours flight yesterday with Jim at Kilakee - nice light breeze from the lake so oblique to the main slope but that suited us as the sun was low to the left. I was flying the Eliminator, Jim his Osprey. Floating weather. Pretty cold but certainly not as much snow as Bill. Too bad Alan - the good thing about wood models is that they are easily repaired. Hope you get well soon Fred.
First day of Spring tomorrow!!
-
Looks like everyone is coming out of hibernation. Almost made it out on friday I think it was but had a sick little girl at home. Will have to wait until spring has sprung!
I'm sure you'll be back in the air soon Alan. Turbulence can be tricky especially with only a rudder and elevator.
Impressed with your commitment lads. That looks blood cold up north!
-
Hi Joe,
Thought you were off on your travels again!
Couple more pics of the frozen North

Almost looks like you are in the Antarctic in the first picture Bill :D :D
-
It felt like it Alan. Although once you got moving it wasn't bad. Wind chill was pretty bad on the hands. Wind meter was showing 12 -15mph which gives a windchill temp of -4C. Glad I had fishing gloves :D :D John was flying in his bare hands and still doing 15 min flights
-
Real Men don't need gloves !!!!
-
Real Men don't need gloves !!!!
That's not what you said yesterday! :P
-
Thanks guys !
I'm back! :D And back to work
And still no flying ! :!:
Like the pics in the snow ! :D
Sorry for the off topic, the murder they are talking about on TV these days, if I'm right, this is behind the car park where we are flying right ?? Saw the images on TV, and all the garda cars where parked on the slope...
Scary anyway that we flew there for a year with a dead body a few meters away !!
-
Whats all that about a body being found. At Killakee??
-
Hey Joe,
Sound like it, on the other side of the road where the car park is.
Well, that's what they showed on RTE the other night.
But they also showed another area, on the big turn when you go to Glencree, after the long stretch of road after the car park... There is usually lots of cars with trailers with dogs here every week end...
Freaky anyway !
-
Shit!, thats not nice
-
AAAAaaaaahhhh Flew again in Kilakee last Saturday :D
Low wind conditions and small thermal activity, and a good 40 minutes flight with the good old Algebra.
Followed by a fight down the valley to get some altitude after everything that marginaly kept me up in the air stopped!... Mountain wins, Fred lose !
And a 30 minutes walk for me :D
And a great day ! :D
Happy to been out before the snow covered the mountain again in the evening !
-
Never mind Fred, the walk did you good.
I was out yesterday on the north slope of Big L. Fair wind but not a lot of lift…….wind was a little too much from the East. I remembered what you taught me in light lift conditions, “Keep the wings level in the turns.” I could also hear Joe calling in my ear, “RUDDER,…. more RUDDER!”
When are the big lift conditions going to return so I can 'Bank and Yank' my way around the sky :!:
-
Hey Keith,
But you also need someone behind you slapping your head while shouting "rudder !!!"
In light conditions, the rudder is king ! :D
Anyway, yep, still waiting for a bit more windy conditions now ! Would like to fly the Crystal !!! :!:
-
Hey had anyone seen the weather for Saturday? Looking good for The Big L :D
-
Sunday is looking slightly better Ed. (Less low cloud forecast)
I was thinking of popping into the indoor Fly-In at Kiltealy, to marvel at how other pilots can do the things that I can’t, and then going onto the slopes. :D Two birds with one stone, so-to-speak.
Fred? Anyone else??
-
Definitively a no go for me on Saturday !
Sunday... Still negociating that one ! Hopefully, I will be able to make it to the indoor, then Slope (as soon as I crash my plane, should not take long! :D )
-
Yank & Bank returned today! :D
Yes folks the good times are back. West Slope of Big L……..wind speeds 40 - 50Km/h gusting 60. WSW, and masses of lift---------WEEEeeeeeee! :D :D
It’s been months since I’ve had to ballast up a model but it’s great fun to have them flying at a fast’ish speed. Strangely the Phase 6 didn’t seem so fast as I remember it being. :?:
Think it may be time to consider getting a mouldy. Something with a V tail and a thin profile. (I’m getting excited!)
Only slight ‘fly in the ointment’ was,……… It weren’t ‘alf bloody cold. :(
Conditions for Sunday are due to be a little gentler but bring your winter woollies’ me thinks your gonna need ‘em.
Keith.
-
Hi Keith,
Great news that you got on to the mountain too. Fergal and myself finally got out as well for a cold and showery blast at Killakee. Pretty good feeling to get some decent lift under the Vector`s wings at last :D Fergal was flying his Typhoon which is 2 meter mouldie which looks the business indeed. Looks alot bigger than a 2m when it`s`flying and very stable. Over all a very cold and
short days flying but no crashes! If the weather plays ball on Sunday you can count me in for Mt.L
Ed
-
Hi Keith.
Is there much snow up at the nine stones? Is it difficult to drive up there? I might try and go up on Sunday. Have to wait and see.
-
Hi Alan,
If the roads are in bad shape i can give you a lift from Naas or Bunclody if you want.
ed
-
Thanks for the offer Ed.
But I think I'll be OK. I can't guarantee that I'll be going anyway. I'll have to wait until Sunday morning to be sure.
-
Hey Alan,
There was a very small amount of snow on the mountain today. Mostly on the windward grass areas, hardly any on the roads. I made it up there in my little "Bubble Car"
Going by todays conditions, (and I don’t think any more snow is forecast for this area before Sunday) you’ll have no problem getting up there. :D
I’ll post a weather report early on Sunday morning, you can make your decision then.
-
Hey Alan no problem
-
Thanks Keith
-
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Happy%20Days/DSCSheep.jpg)
At the center of this picture is the Mighty Mount Lienster in all it’s Majesty, taken at 07.30 this morning from a position of aprox 25Km South east of the mountain.
Unfortunately you can’t actually see Big L,…. because there is a bank of cloud in the way! (But the sheep assured me that it’s going to be a grand day)
There was no snow fall last night although there was a slight frost. The roads to the slopes should be clear.
Wind speed at my location at this time is: 18Km/h
Wind direction: N.W.
Temperature: Zero degrees
Humidity: 91%
Atmospheric pressure: 992mB rising
Wind speed is predicted to be between 20 and 30Km/h today. That should produce a good degree of lift on the slopes.
It all looks set for a fair day’s gliding, provided that cloud clears away.
I intend to be at the indoor venue by about 11.00 then head off to the slope about 13.00.
I’ll post another update in an hour’s time.
K.
-
Time: 08.30
Big L. is still obscured by a long bank of cloud covering all of the Blackstairs mountain range that I can normally see from my location. The rest of the sky is basically clear with small amounts of high cloud.
Wind speed has dropped slightly to 15Km/h
I think the slopes will clear of cloud by this afternoon by a combination of sun and wind action.
Right, I’m going to start loading the car! :D
(I’ve just noticed that the max number of users of this forum, at any time, was at 1o/c this morning! 40 people using it at one in the morning. :? Couldn’t have been much on the tele’ last night)
-
Good morning Keith,
Wow what a weather report! Thanks a million for that, very detailed indeed. Myself and Fergal should be down there about 12.00 / 13.00 so see you then. Have fun at the indoor.
ed :D
-
Thanks for the update Keith. Very Detailed :D :D. Have you got a weather station at home? I'll probably be leaving Naas at 11.00am. So I should be at Mt Leinster at 12. Hopefully I will get to fly the K8 and everything works out.
-
Well, despite the odd shower, and later in the afternoon a lull in wind speed, I think that was a pretty good afternoons flying.
Always a pleasure to fly with like minded pilots especially those I’ve not met before, so I trust Fergal and Richard will be on the slopes of Big L. again soon. :D (I noted that Fergal has a fascination for flying at Mach 2 and Richard has joined the SSSHHHHWWWWiiiissssssssss club……..He knows what I mean  )
Most of us sustained a little bit of cosmetic damage to our models, :!: but that’s ‘par for the course’ so long as we learn from each occasion. And besides, it puts some thrill into the experience of flying, or should I say Landing!
Next up...... PSS meeting in a couple of weeks. (Actually any gliders will do, it’s just an excuse to tell the wives' that we’re having another fly-in. :P )
See You then. Keith
-
Hi Keith , first I really have to give you and Fred a mighty thank you for the invite to fly on the Big L.
What a way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
You have a massive knowledge of gliding, again a big thank you for all the wee tips you have give to me and sorry for getting your finger all cyano ! oops accidents do happen !
Thanks
Richard
-
Richard, John, thanks to you for coming down to the events !  Same for Fergal, good to put some faces on forum's names :D
Hope you had fun and that we will see you again soon.
First gathering for the year was, I think, a success. Some small showers, a bit of sun, wind, a great slope, and a bunch of like minded people... A perfect day ! :D
2 meetings in a day, not bad, I have a few photos, I'll post them after my breakfast :D
-
Now I'm jealoous that I didn't come down
-
And here are a few photos (sorry, not much !)

I also have a bit of videos, I'll post that as soon as I have 5 minutes to edit it :D
-
Great days flying, thankyou guys, Big L is the best slope site in Ireland !!!
-
Hey John,
After doing a little searching through my ‘bits & pieces,’ i.e. the stuff that I should have thrown away ages ago but have kept on the basis that, “It’ll come in handy one day,……….even if I never use it!” I’ve found my old Phase 6 wing. :)
It’s a semi symmetrical type that I used on my first Phase 6. Pretty much ready to ‘rock and roll’ once it’s got a couple of servos in it. No flaps I’m afraid, but with twin servos you could make both ailerons turn up into spoilerons which will tame the bird for landing to some degree.
Only other thing is that when I was using this wing I banded it to the ‘fuse’. (I knew I’d end up crashing it so I wanted the wings to come off without damaging anything.) If you wanted it for your Phase 6 you’d have to insert a dowel pin in the front. (Or put some pegs through the fuse and use rubber bands it like I did)
Oh, one more thing…….you might want to change the colour scheme!
Either way, it’s your’s for the taking if you want it.
-
Thanks keith
fantastic offer, just what the doctor ordered, a new wing, walking pace landings now ???
I will pick up the wing at the PSS event .
johnP
-
walking pace landings now ???
Er,….well….no. You’d need flaps working in opposition to the spoilerons for that. But the spoilerons by themselves will certainly shed quite a bit off her landing speed. And without that big aileron servo in the middle of the fuse there should be less damage caused during,...........er......how shall I put this? :?:
Unconventional Landing
I'll bring 'em to the PSS in March
K.
-
Looks like you lot have been having fun without me!!
Nice to see ya all getting out again. Need to get into the workshop and get a few models ready for the PSS meeting now.
Typhoon looks really nice. I hope nothing bad happens to me Luna or I shall be forced to get one!!
-
He's back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hi Joe, will you still be about for the PSS?
-
Hey Bill.
Yeah back for a couple of weeks. Will be here for the PSS event. Need to start working on the brownie points now!
-
One of the few perks of being divorced Joe, don't need to gain brownie points.
-
I remember the days of the coffee table building board Bill. Those were good days indeed!
-
And a video of the gathering we had in February :D
16.5mb. Not very elaborated one, but we'll do a better one this week end ! :D

" and the Oscar for best film goes to 'FRED SPIELBERG' for Gliders over Mt Leinster.
-
  Thanks John !
That one is a good 10 minutes work ! And used the same layout to make the indoor video !
-
Finally got out flying today (Also see the DS section). My first time on Mt Leinster in 2010. Feels like forever since I've been there. Keith was aiming to meet me but had to work unfortunately. Keith work you say! Yes I'm confused too!
Was like the old days. Decent northerly wind and a big slope all to myself. Not even any hill walkers. Actually wore some decent warm clothes for a change too. So a comfy 2 and a half hours on my favourite Mt Leinster slope were had.
After an hour with the Luna I set up my ASH which was ready to fly again after it's last crash at the september meeting. This model has given me a hard time so far. Two crashes and lots of time and energy has gone into it. Some machines are just like that I guess. 40 minutes on it today. I think we are friends again. Hopefully this is the shape of things to come :?
An old friend back in the air today too. My Skua has been grounded for a good while now. A new battery and a new servo and it's ready to rock again. Not as solid as it used to be. I think the spar is broken in there. Will strip fix and recover it over the summer. Spent ages buzzing round and almost hitting myself and generally acting the mick with her. I must say, I love this wing. It's the best bang for buck glider I have. Closely followed by the Luna. It's the cheapest glider I flew today by far and I have to say the one I probably had the most fun with. Food for thought :?:
Back to fixing and charging for the weekend now :D
Not much of a photo but all posts are better with photos!!
-
Glad you enjoyed yourself Joe, sorry I couldn’t join you. Sometimes life get’s in the way of flying. (I hate it when that happens :!: )
ER,…….so what’s the white wing in the picture? I haven’s seen that one before,….have I? :?
Hope you’re gonna bring ‘em along at the weekend. We could have a “punch up”. I haven’t flown combat for…………….hmmmmmm :?: ……. can’t remember!
BTW when are you going to build that racing Skua? (S-15) I made the ballast weights for it over a year ago.
Thanks for sharing your day with us, I'm sure you must feel better now

The wing in front is the one I knocked together myself out of blue foam. Yes you've seen it fly.
Will of course bring at the weekend. Put some yellow strips on it to give you something to aim at! :D
S-15 one of these days. I might leave it in the box and get a NCFM Moth 60" instead and leave that in the box as well!!
