Post by: Richard Boyd on September 01, 2012, 19:07:12 PM
Ok folks I have been building on the kitchen table for the last 6yrs. Now that the kithchen table is distroyed I have decided rather than buy a new table I will build my very own MAN CAVE  8)
This started a few weeks ago and now its time for me to share with the masses

Here is the ground work

Today Saturday the frame was erected , I like to erect things

One word - Insulation.

Not that last winter was particularly cold, but my man cave was warmer than the house during the previous winter.   :D

My word, that is one TALL building for a workshop. I notice that the top of your head is only half way up the height of the window  . Then there is a section of wall above that, and the roof eves above that. Are you going to put a dormer in the roof or something???

Hope you’ve laid some power cables in under the garden. And a water supply, Oh and a toilet, and  a hob for fry-ups…………….MMmmmm I can smell the rashers from here. 8)  Great! :P

Good morning, I am up early as I could not sleep thinking about the man cave. Planning everything out in your head can fry it lol

Chris thanks for the advice and yes I intend to insult and panel the walls with ply.

Mr Keith no food or frying will be aloud in my shiny new shed/cave.  :?:

I added extra height so I could build in a loft to give me extra storage. I got a second hand like new UPVC window off gumtree and its quite large, I hope this will give me some natural light.
I found from experience that roof perspexs will drip condensation on my precious planes
The door is a roller type door so again space will not be wasted.

When I looked at the cave this morning I am thinking maybe I should have went bigger  :?:

Question Richard, :?: …….why have you put, what looks like, a pathway around two sides of the cave,…….Surely you could have made the cave that much bigger couldn’t you? Too late to change it now of course :!:

The simple answer , planning permission !
I was intending to go the full size but I got advice and was told that anything larger would require planning plus building control. Once you go this way then the costs of architects etc makes it very expensive.

Thanks gentlemen
No guttering man came today so again I raked the garden and de-stoned and now have the grass seed sown. This evening I put on a coat of PVA concrete sealer to keep the dust down, will give it another coat tomorrow.
I priced the wood to line the inside walls plus floor the loft storage area and got a massive shock  :!:
Looks like it will be up on £500 thats €625 for you men down South

Bill do you know anywere were I can buy plywood with out VAT LOL.
My budget is almost gone and still no electric fitted.

Think I will have to be building my planes on the floor lol

Richard,
if you send a list of electric bits required, sockets switches, lights, wire etc I can get my hands on these things if you dont mind second hand stuff. mainly metal fittings.
Delivery next month at Mount L
4 foot lights etc..

Just a thought.

Don't all start looking for bits now!!!

I know how you feel Richard. 30 years ago, (christ, that makes me feel old :( ) I recond on fitting out the  loft of my house to become a workshop, (Man Cave of it’s day). In my head I estimated it would cost 50 -60 quid.
When I came to do it, just laying a wooden floor on top of the joists cost me £80. Then I had to line + insulate the underside of the roof & put in the work benches + wiring. I ran out of money, and had to wait a couple of months before I could finish it.
Just to end this uncalled for tale, when it was finished it turned out to be bloody hot up there in the summer, and freezing cold in the winter and cost wise it wouldn’t have worked out much less than building a shed in the rear garden.
You’ve made the right choice Richard, believe me.

hey rich,

that's some return for a week end's work, looks really solid.

now, if it took you 4 days to build a shed, how long would it take you to finish an sg 38?

you have until end of sept to answer the question!

Hi Ralph its a deal on the electric fittings, thank you so very much

The sg38 will be the first plane back on the building board once this job is complete

Well I have the cnc foam cutter to rig up first and alot more evenings manual work on the outside of the house and inside the cave, the SG will not be ready this year. SORRY

Man Cave update
I have the steel work for the loft fitted and flooring in plus the walls and roof insulated and ply lined.
This week I have 15ltrs of white paint on the walls and just the under side of the loft floor to paint and I am ready for the electrics.

A question to anyone with knowledge  :?

I have the concrete floored sealed with PVA sealer but would like to finish it of with floor paint. I have had ploblems in the past with floor paint flaking so my question is , are there any paints on the market that actually work and don't flake ?

I have no idea about floor paint I’m afraid Richard, but I’m glad to hear that the rest of your new abode is coming along a pace.

 How about some more pictures?

I have used wickes floor paint in the past and it was crap, Kees suggested using an epoxy based paint so i priced it today and got a SHOCK
Just lets say I could not afford it.
