You asked for it (http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15382#15382) Fred!    :D

Our story begins on a dark winter night, no one was up except...  nahhh but I've always wanted to start with that line!

The story begins late in 2006, 28 of November to be exact.

Big plane, the full size has a wingspan of about 12.4 meters.

Next up the fuselage, for that we need a jig.

The kit cutter sent this 3/16" for the firewall!!!

B25 from YT, P47 crutch and P51D from Top Flite.

Getting there.

Old firewall in the new firewall cut out.

And here they are side by side, not a doubt in my mind that this was a smart move.

BIG
(http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/1167278091.jpg)

Balsa stripper from Master Airscrew, used for making stringers at the moment, might also come in hand when it's time for some planking.

Busy as a bee.

String theory.

Arrrrr, time to walk the plank matey.

I cut down some of the balsa for the planking, notice that the cuts are not straight, this makes it easier to plank the fuselage.
BTW if someone needs any extra weight to get the right CG in their models I got a lot of "balsa" that would be well suited for that. Well chuffed with JP for shipping that "balsa".

To keep the structure warp free I planked both sides at the same time
(http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/2007/1168307275.jpg)

Oh dear, looks like VSOP works on balsa too!

Well, I must say that all looks very impressive Selleri.  :) Certainly a BIG model.     I had no idea that model aviation was so popular in your neck of the woods.

By the way, I much prefer these latest shots of your workroom. Looks more like home to me, only a lot bigger! 8)

Cheers, maybe not popular but there are few running around.
This is my mates place, I'm afraid mine is a bit more humble on an old desk (http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/1122920199.jpg).  :D

Now we are up to 14.January 2007, got a bit white around that time.

The snow is getting close to 150 cm(59") from the roof edge.

Can I get to my Jug... I'll ponder about it for a little while.

Getting there.

I'll start on the wing shortly.

Turnaround...

I'll need to do some changes around the tail wheel area. Ziroli drew the Robart #160 retract on his plan, it goes from the blue circle and up to the green when retracted.
CJM retract goes between the same coloured circles depending on where it's installed(same colour lines). I'll also need to run the pull/pull wires for the steering from behind the retract or use some springy thingy on the lines.

Tail seat.

Next up, doing some wheel doors for the tail wheel. Notice the clear plastic film to keep the cloth and epoxy from sticking to the fuselage.

Here is the hatch all trimmed up and ready for action.

Here we see the tailwheel at its final resting place, I made an U shaped plate from plywood for the retracts to bolt to, that plate sits on beams that are joined to the fuselage formers.

To solve the steering dilemma I'll run the wire in a tube behind the tail wheel.

Starting to look like the part.

The traditional support of control runs over longer distances, so far only the blue.

Servos for the elevators. Allen servo screws from Modelfixings, very convenient for tight spaces.

Nice model Selleri :D :D . Where did you get the kit from?
Title: Ziroli 92" P-47
Post by: selleri on December 23, 2012, 01:25:08 AM
Short kit from a company called Laser Lizard, canopy, cowling and plans via Model Images(now defunct) in the UK.
International project, among the suppliers are: Model Images, Laser Lizard, Fighter Aces, Ashtek, ModelExpress(is), S.M. Services, Bobs Hobby Center, Fibretech.

Then came summer and we pick up the thread on October 20th 2007.

Next up hinges. Nothing new here, drew a centerline on the surfaces, mated them marked the hinges location, then drew a vertical line on each surface and drilled the resulting +. Result was 16 lined up holes for the hinges. You can just about make them out on the third picture down.

What is happening? Well this was supposed to be a scale-ish build of some sort so I better make some effort along those lines.

Don't think I can complain about it, looks decent enough I hope.

Next I decided to tackle the fin and rudder, mainly because the parts kept getting in my way    Not much to say about it, nice and simple wood frame, if everything that needs to is kept square we are well on our way to happiness and eternal nirvana. Next up is adding a wood block to the bottom of the rudder and setting up a control horn.

Got to put some effort into this scale thingy...  made this little sanding block.

So I could sand down the trailing edge of the stabilizer.

And put some plywood there.

Then we got something that looks like this.

I put plywood on the elevator so I could screw the control horns to something more substantial than balsa.

That was then covered with 1/4" balsa.

Back to the tail gear.

The tailwheel has been linked up and is working fine.

Here I've started to sand down the blocks I'll fasten the door hinges too. As the hatch isn't straight I'll need to get the right radius on the blocks so it's easiest to put some sandpaper over the spot where the blocks go and rub the blocks over it, then it acquires the radius from the surface.

Here we are, I've got to finish the edges a little bit more.

And open, notice the plywood on the front and back that keeps the doors from going too far down to hatch.

Everything is in it's place and seems to fit.

I used cloth and epoxy from Fibretech, you can get the cloth in many sizes and weights.

I've raised the stabilizer and cleaned the surface.

Playing cards were used to spread out the epoxy.

You don't need much epoxy.

Started by putting a small amount of epoxy on the middle of the stab, then I spread it out, first along the stab then across it.
You need to spread it well as we don't want to see any "puddles" on the cloth.

On the right trailing edge you can see cloth that has still to receive epoxy, the lighter areas on the left trailing edge are because of the white filler I used.

I used clothing pegs to keep the cloth hanging over the edges.

Here you can see the amount of epoxy I was left with after finishing the stab, you really don't need much.

Just to be safe I went over the wing with paper to get any extra epoxy.

I did not find much.

I did the elevators too.

Now you see that it pays to make sure that the epoxy goes beyond the edge of the surface. Light stroke with a sanding block.

And then we get this fine cut, where space is restricted you can cut the epoxy soaked cloth.

That looks like a cracking build. Lots of work in real wood and no EPP or EPS in site. Lovely. Proves there are still "builders" out there. Jug has always been a favourite.

Great plane the p47, I still fly my Y&T razor back p47 which is nearly 10 years old and still flys well.

Cheers guys.

It'll be based on a 78th FG scheme with some personalisation. The Ka3 was built at a good pace so I can paint them both at the same time, in fact they'll even be able to share some of the colours!!!  :?:

Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Some extra wood for the wing dowel.

The stringers were split so they would be easier to manipulate around the front bend.

Was feeling a bit lazy so I didn't use the smaller planks on the side.

Getting closer to the razorback look, I'm using 1.5mm(1/16) balsa not 3mm(1/8) but I'm doing 2 rounds.

I've added some wood for the sheeting.

Added some more here as the sheeting was having trouble doing that bend without breaking before I put it in.

Now we are talking...

Yet to do the second round of 1.5mm sheeting.

Big one!

Tank floor installed.

Time to do something with my ostrich egg.

Better get rid of the lacquer for a good clean wood to wood join.

Last time we'll get this view.

The ceiling was looking a tad weak so I put this column up to support it...

We'll need some noseweight, Zenoah 62 to the rescue.

Draw, draw, draw...

Plenty of space in the cowl.

Rudder horn from a GFK epoxy sheet.

The ball links will be sandwiched between layers.

Balsa was used as a spacer while the glue was setting.

Epoxy with microballoons and milled fiber was used to glue the horn in place.

And here the rudder has been sheeted.

I better make some arrangements if I want to have a pilot there.

Might need to remove a few more millimeters at a later time.

There is more than one way to skin a cat.

Easier to have the triangle list follow the bend of the rudder if we make a few cuts to relieve the tension.

I bought the larger TF cockpit kit when I was gearing up for the build.

Not far off.

The cockpit opening has reached full size, I had to remove part of the F5 former.

I've been itching to try some of this detailing stuff I've heard about... I sanded the stabilizer and decided to put some filling base on it, most of it will sand off though.

And here it's drying, we need about an hour at 25-30C until it can be sanded.

Next up, sand all that filler away, I've got water and soap in the tray so I don't clog the sandpaper.

And here most of the filler has been sanded away.

I use this putty after the filler has been sanded off.

More sanding.

Not many places on the Thunderbolt with overlapping joints, one of them is on the elevators.

Here I'm using two stripes of 3mm plastic tape(471) from 3M. It caused me some grief when I took it off as it decided to leave some of the glue on the elevator.

I decided to use the putty to build up the edge but as previously stated when I removed the tape I was left with some glue residue, I'll need to check if that happens with filler before I do the other elevator. I managed to remove the residue by using another tape to "grab" it.

The putty is sanded until I can see the tape brake through and then I can remove the tape giving a nice clean edge.

Hmm, one year and two days(30.Nov. 2007) since I started building the Jug, where has the time gone.

Time waits for no man or something like that...  It had to come to this, time to glue some bigger parts together, like the empennage.
First up was squaring the fuselage off, the fuselage crutch is handy here to check the lines. The elevator is supposed to have 0-1/2 positive angle, we can check that by measuring the height of the LE and TE, 0-1.6mm(1/16"). Don't quote me on that angle as I don't remember it but the 1.6mm number is correct.

Point of no return, notice strategically placed tissue in case of leaks.

The vertical stabilizer is almost hovering over the fuselage so I decided to do something about it, beginning with this.

The back end is starting to take some room, got to be careful next time I need to flip it around. Epoxy and milled fibers were used for gluing.

Balsa blocks on either side of the one I had already added.

Getting there...

Few layers of balsa, some glue, then some cutting and sanding to get a rough shape.

Some lightweight filler.

Starting to look better, still some sanding to do.

Few dials and gauges for the pilot.

I ordered some charting tape from Fighter Aces to simulate the join on the full size sheeting, a phone call later Phil had somehow managed to get my CC number and couple of days later I got a small envelope delivered through my mail slot. The tape is only 1/64" wide or 0.4mm wide.

Not much material.

Steady hand is needed to apply it.

Here we see it on one elevator half.

Next up, spray some filler over the tape, few runs might be needed.

Then the filler is sanded away until the tape appears again, here we are almost done.

Here the tape has been removed.

Some colour on the elevator.

Up close and personal, remember that the vertical line is just about 0.4mm(or 1/64") wide.

Here it is in all its glory out in the parent unit garage, everything sanded and ready for action, notice my new electric oven bought this morning.

The cloth is cut with a sharp model knife and a metal ruler.

One action picture just to keep you excited, notice the gloves, essentials when working with strong chemicals. I mixed just over half a cup each time and had a small left over
(http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/2008/1199304199.jpg)

And here it is post operation, a little bit wet but that was soon mended.

Some filler on the fuselage, next job is sanding it all off.   :?

After putting all that filler on I needed to get it off again... brilliant!

Changed the tip of my soldering iron.

And some time later one of my elevators looked something like that.

16.February 2008

I've started to ponder over the wing and the next steps.
Notice the nice Cyparis I picked up at Cosford back in 2006
Bought the first bits for this build back in 2004 so if all goes on according to plan it will be a five year(yeah right) project when finished.

Here the shims are flat while the ribs are glued to the bottom spars.

The wing will be split outboard of the flaps so W8 was doubled. Next two pictures show the the wing tube holes more clearly.

Moving along.

Here the shims have been put on their edge and we can glue in the leading edge spar, top spars and some more sticks and stuff.

Better get the angle of the root rib correct.

And here we are today.

And here we are after today, I also started the other wing half but that is just copy/paste work so no picture of that part.

Starting to look like something
(http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/2008/1207877774.jpg)

Bottom of the wings has been sheeted.

Bigger flaps might be needed.

Oho, what happened here?

I wonder if these nice little rings have something to do with it?

The wing tube was bought from Ralf Petrausch Modellbautechnik (http://www.petrausch-modellbau.de/). Pretty impressive stuff from them
(http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/2008/1209867205.jpg)

The wingbolt goes through the balsa block on its way to the fuselage.

The flap actuation rib and blocks for the hinges.

Rolled up paper was used for servo wire guide, thin CA keeps it solid where needed.

Dowels were used for anti-rotation with a bit of plywood for holding power.

Decided to go with tongues.

Voila! Only thing missing is a bit of balsa to box in the tongue.

Caps for the wing tubes.

Top wing sheeting.

And the LE, you might notice that there is plywood under the balsa on the center section.

I've started to work on detailing the fuselage, 1/64" panel line tape from Fighteraces as was used on the empennage.

Getting there!

Decided it was time to plug the hole round back.

Bit of filler, sanding, painting and we have this.

The dashboard, well, it's not white anymore.

One of the flaps is covered.

Almost done with the wings. One aileron left to finish, aileron hinges, wingtips, servo installation and who knows I might even manage that and glassing before Xmas.

Notice the curve in the ailerons, we'll get to that in a couple of years!

The wing has been joined... not getting any smaller.

Wingtips cut from a 3"x1" balsa. Currently the wing is weighing in at 2.6 kg(5.73 lbs) so the wing + fuselage is 5.2 kg (11.46lbs)

Nothing big happening, wingtips have been cleaned up and servo hatches for the ailerons made up, plus a lot of sanding and filling.

Always fun when you can assemble the major parts for the first time
(http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/2008/1226013767.jpg)

The wing center join was glassed.

Started to lay up the cloth for the gear doors.

Carbon tows.

More fiberglass cloth.

Started to glass the wingtips, used a tad of a grey colour pigment.

Well I was a bit closer to the suggested daily dosage of the pigment today.

I began by placing a brown parcel tape on the center section to keep from having a single large wing tomorrow.

Then I applied some filler(P38) to the wing end, maybe a tad too much here but I got away with it, I hope.

Then I pressed the wing end home, allowing the filler to squeeze out.

Then I removed most of the filler that squeezed out. Tomorrow I should have a nice clean edge at the join.

Red circles show where the filler had grabbed the tape a bit. Better stick to better known brands in the future me thinks.

Here we see how the filler has spread out, besides giving a neater seam it also makes the panel more solid when attached.

Voila, nearly invisible seam, well it will be when I've blendid it in and filled in the area around the joining tab.

I offered the wing to the fuselage tonight, I was rather pleased with fit even if I say so myself.

I'll also need to fasten the wing to something.

Hard to believe it's been two years already, so a good day to mate the wing and fuselage and do some drilling.

Starting to look the look.

Threaded inserts were used for the wing bolts.

Time to do some cutting on the bellypan, made a W2 rib for a rough outline.

Tada...

...well almost, had to add a bit of material on the other side.

Now it was time to "damage" my wing by cutting out the wheely bits. Thunderbolts had retracts that shortened when retracted, about 10" IIRC but as my retracts don't do that I'll settle for a slightly different wheel covers.

On big sister this looks something like this, the scale isn't correct for me but the shape is all I want so I refrenced this drawing while marking out the area on the fiberglass I layed up earlier. The lower part shows how I cut the wing to get the retract into it before continuing.

Here the fiberglass layup is in place and I've started to mark it.

After a bit of work I had the  retract cover cut out, I'll keep it in one piece for now at least. Next I fastened it place at cut around it for a flush fit.

Here are the markings before cutting the wing skin.

I'm pretty pleased. I'll do something to finish the area around the retract base before going to the filler/primer stage. Now to repeat for the other side.

Now both wheel covers have been made.

Another large milestone(5.Dec.2008), here the Jug is standing on its own legs for the first time.

The spring starter have a great function, the pope have the same on ih tractor, but the avantage of electornique ignition, is more power (200 to 400 rpm ) and for idle, less vibration. But an accu is necessary.

We'll see what happens.

8.February 2009

I had put some filler primer on the wings over the holidays and I sanded it off tonight.

I needed to remove about 2mm(~5/64") from the retract bearers so the gearleg would clear the wingskin.

Fun, fun and more fun, putty, water, soap, sandpaper, sanding blocks, sanding sponges and more muscle movements than I care to remember... and I'm not even finished yet... Fred where are you when I need you?

The wing seems to be having a bad case of the measles...

Last days, and some late nights, have been enjoyed in the comfort of the palace...  well okay garage.

Time to do something on the wheelcovers.

Primer!

I didn't quite manage to wet the carbon tows thin enough so a light skim of putty was put on top.

More sanding.

Fitted to the wing and trimmed down.

One coat of primer makes the world spin around... although that might be the solvents.

Sanded with 800 wet to find any dings, managed to find one.

All this sanding and it's still this big!

Great already making a mess of that beautiful primer, started to lay down tape to build up some of the panel lines.

Putty!

And sanding, and filling, and sanding, and priming, and sanding... well you get the picture.

Priming...

Sanding...

Progress!

Been a bit busy but burned few rivets the other day.

Well as I was hooked on this jet malarky stuff by a good mate not much happened for quite some time so we return to the project on the 26.March 2011.

I'm going to do my best to get some colour onto the Jug over the next months. There are few areas that I'm not particularly happy with and need to fix to make it presentable. I assembled the whole lot today to get inspirational vibes and see if my wing was still as big as I'd remembered when assembled...   it is!

The plane is 8 kg(17.6lbs) as it is today with the retracts installed.

Getting closer to the paint stage.

As you can maybe see that hinging method for the aileron isn't going to work due to the curve on the top side, so that is being changed to a more center hinged method. Hopefully some more pictures soon, work and life interfearing and all that.

Solvent applied over the decals that softens then and makes them blend better with the background.

Then they looks something like this.

And after some clear coat has been applied they'll look even better!

Ashloks on the wing connectors, quick and painless!

Batteries installed.

Checking the balance, it needed about 1200 grams (about 2.65 lb) on the firewall. Not too bad but lets not forget that we have further 700 grams in the batteries and probably something like 100 grams in the woodwork around them.

Today(26.July) was the big day, after priming the Zenoah 62 and few flips with the spring start it jumped to life, purring like a kitten at idle and growling like a cougar at full bore.
Later aftur confirming the control throws and movements plus the mandatory range check there was nothing left but to taxi to take off posistion.

While taxing out there was time to contemplate on this almost eight years of history that me and the Jug have together.

Slowly the throttle was opened up and away we went. The runway was a bit heavy with thick grass and after constant wetness over the last weeks but
despite that the Jug lifted off and headed for the skies and some strange blueness that was present between them.
Shortly after take off the left main gear leg decided it had had enough and left the party heading west.

Now there was not much to do but enjoy the flight and boy, oh boy, did the Jug performe!
Responsive, tracks well and generally does what is asked off it.
After about 7 minuts of airtime it was time to start planing the landing.
The Jug was put on a runway heading and a steady decent set up and just before touch down the engine was killed to save the prop.

After that a group of modellers headed out west for about 250 meters to recover the gear leg and door.

I'd like to thank everyone that assisted me in some way over the years

I still haven't perfected the technique of flying and taking photograps so here are few pictures from other people who were there today.

Putting the final touches on the Jug.

Well, what a marvellous project from conception to completion.  Pity about the undercarriage, but no doubt you’ll soon have that fixed Selleri. The model really did look like the real thing in the air didn’t it! 8)

So well done young man.    I hope you have many enjoyable hours flying her.

Actually you could write a book about the project…..
“The Man Who Gave Birth,........to an Aeroplane.”

Lovely plane and nice pics. Looks like you were mowing the grass (preparing the landing strip). Did the rear wheel fail to retract? Thanks for sharing.

No, it was on purpose, I ran out of time to finish the closing bit so I left it open.
It's operational now and should be closed on the next mission!
