Title: 50% Hempel Cub
Post by: selleri on April 14, 2013, 03:18:35 AM
Helping a mate with this one.

BIG box!

33% Cub wing, not clipped.

33% fuselage.

After too many weeks working out of the country the owner came home to all this stuff... and a smoking credit card!  ;)

Came via Bob's Hobby Center (http://bobshobbycenter.com/) down in Orlando except the wires and plugs on bottom left.

First job, cutting into the stab for the elevator servos.

Bit tight!

But in they went.

Ended by gluing in the hinges. Next up, control linkages, then rinse, lather, repeat!

When we have more than one servo per control surface it pays off if you try to select servos that are close to each other. It doesn't hurt to have 10 servos to try and pair together either!

Servo wire yards are starting to pile up!

I'm pretty sure the wings are bigger than the lower wings on a full size Pitts!

Studs for the ailerons.

Nice to have the Powerbox to help with setup and power distribution. Doesn't hurt if you have Futaba setup that you can get 14 channels out of this baby just by adding two 3 channel SBUS Rx's. I'll settle for 4 satelites and Spektrum in this case.

Not getting smaller!

Elevator ready to go, did I mention how much I like syncing servos via the Powerbox.

Side and down thrust, we're picking the DA-170 up from the post office on Monday. Has just been run in by the previous owner over in the UK.

We need few meters of wire for the tail.

Getting there.

Hmmmm...

Big tail, no not on the dog silly.

10 meters of wire just for the elevator and we still need to wire seven servos and one kill switch.

Now we know.

Rudder was made removable.

Even more wire, six more, close to ten if we count the extensions in the wings themselfs. Three more servos and a kill switch left to wire!

Future home of the Powerbox.

Kill switch and throttle servo in place.

Check light for the kill switch.

With this many wires we realy need to be able to tell them apart.

Powerbox and Multibox in place.

Wing struts being attached.

Voila!

Adding the windows.

What ever it takes...

You don't lift this one with your thumbs!

PULL!

This much was needed to level her out.

2.8kg of quality steel but we'll reduce it by moving it further front.

Cannisters in place.

Cutting the cowl.

About that CG...

Perfect!

The much needed nose weight has been installed.

Front window getting stuck.

Final touches on the exhaust.

Hmmm, the ceiling is a bit low isn't it!?

Out in the daylight for the first time.

Inside a trailer.

The big day finaly came on Saturday, I had the pleasure of handling the maiden and it flew brilliantly. Not sure about the performance on the DA170 as this is a big draggy airframe so no comment on the suitability of towing glass slippers with this one, at least not with the homemade exhaust system.

Better to have some helpers to do the assembly.

Getting closer.

And up she went.
(http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/2013/1372525165_3.jpg) (http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/2013/1372525165_4.jpg) (http://frettavefur.net/Forum/uploadpic/2013/1372525165_5.jpg)

The owner pretty happy after getting his thumbs on the sticks.

Fringe benefits of having a large model!  ;)

Pinky shows up at 1:56 (http://youtu.be/5Df_UE316zw?t=1m56s) and the Cub at 4:50 (http://youtu.be/5Df_UE316zw?t=4m50s).

My pleasure! Just remember you're watching the "crazy few!"

Smaller glow powered models and HobbyKing electric imports are a large part of the daily sceene.
