Title: The story of a Vimy...
Post by: Fred on January 22, 2014, 08:36:55 AM
Or how to keep very busy for 4 weeks! (and the main reason for my silence!)
To cut a long story short, I have been contacted by a company to make a "prop" model for an event taking place in Dublin.

Here is the end result (sorry for the quality, did that shot last night):

A very interesting subject, that will deserve its own page on the website, putting it up together  :D

ooOOOOoo! Vickers Vimmy. Converted WWI bomber, used by Mr. Allcock & Mr. Brown to be the first to cross the Atlantic, finally crashing into a bog in western Ireland. Very good looking model Mon Ami. (Does it fly)

Ah now Keith, you're slipping up.

The first crossing of the atlantic was completed by the Navy Curtiss NC-4 flying boat. It stopped several times on the crossing (you can do that with a flying boat).

The big difference was that Alcock and Brown managed to do it non stop.

I always knew the NC-4 was first to cross, just never realised it was that it completed the trip only 2 weeks before Alcock and Brown until I checked the dates after I saw your post.

Neat model though.

Oh, pedantic aren’t we!

I should have written it was the first non stop crossing.( Must confess I didn’t know about NC-4 crossing the pond in stages. So I’ve learnt something, thank you Chris.)

Serves me right for trying to look knowledgably, when in fact I’m just a numpty. :(

Thank you all  :D
This is at the NCH. Not every day that your stuff is checked by President Higgins and the CEO of Boeing  :D

The model is static, but designed to fly (unfortunately, this one will remain on static display   )
WS is 1.7m
Dedicated page about the build being prepared  :D

Inspected by the President of the Republic er! You must be very proud Fred! :D

(I doubt the CEO of Boeing knows much about aeroplanes, he only understands profit & loss accounts and balance sheets  )

Well now you’ve built that Vimey, when are you going to build my Mu28 for me?

I don't know Fred. Just back from the science museum in London and there are a few scale details missing....

Starboard wing on the original LE has a number of white linen patches. Traditional fixes looks like, rectangles of various sized fabric doped onto the existing covering. Almost every second rib bay.

Got to say, having stared at the full size for a bit, they were brave men. Cockpit looked very small, and very exposed, and big and all as the airplane is, it is still quite a small airplane.

Fred. There is a program on RTE this Thursday about the pioneers of aviation in Ireland. Is that the documentary you made the model for?

Yesterday, I received a mail from Don, the man behind the Vimy project.
The Vimy is now installed at its final place in the Avolon office in Dublin.

Well, that's it, this project can now come to a close. A very good one, full of history, and where I met some very good guys!

Another one to be proud of!  :D
