Title: September fly in at the big L
Post by: jumbo on September 18, 2014, 09:53:25 AM
So I haven't see a thread about the September fly-in yet (been checking the forum daily) and as I am not even a member of ISR it should not be up to me to create one

However I can barely contain my excitement, it has been far too long since I have done some proper sloping. What is the plan for this years event? Where are people staying (probably booked out by now)?

This year I am planning to bring the v-tail glider that was never finished for the April glide in. A `micro` quark that I have been thinking about recently and possibly the fpv wing I built sans motor and fpv equipment.

However the most pressing issue for me Is whether the BBQ is still going ahead? Do we need to bring our own sausages???????

Sorry did you not get the memo. BBQ moved to France. Fred is in France and will be back for the end of the month. Sausage burger and beer should be here too. Dont worry all will be great. And we are all ISR members here in some shape or from.

Bill, so glad you’ve returned to the fold. We shall be expecting to see great things from you at the meeting. (No pressure then!  :P )

Er,.... excuse me Mr. O’Sullivan but did I see a thing known as a propeller on the front of that model in your picture?!

Just to let you know that anyone caught cheating ( using a propeller) at the glide-in faces a fine.   Normally in the form of buying the drinks in the hotel for the whole of that night. (Don’t say you haven’t been warned! )

And Andy,………yes,…..A certain woman is eagerly awaiting your “Special Load” 8)  ……(Stop being disgusting , JP   )

‘Jumbo’ we are all ‘members’ of the IRS. You don’t have to ’become’ a member, just turn up at the glide-in’s, and or contribute to the forum,…….and that’s it! We are just a group of like minded ‘waifs & strays’ of the aero model fraternity.
As for where to stay,……normally guys stay in a B&B in Bunclody which I think is called Moss House.
Hope you’re not going to get too excited about this event. Perhaps you’d better bring some tissues with you, :( ….. just in case.

And yes, I shall be there. (Don’t all start crying!!!) Don’t know what I’ll be crashing. Won't be the Alpina. I launched it the other week without switching the rx on first….you can guess the rest.

I consider walking without sticks to be pretty great
Have a new Phase 5 to maiden and if I get my finger out I might get the Fly Fly Condor ready in time.

Ah,….a Phase 5.

I’ve never actually seen one ‘in the flesh’.

From pictures it looks rather sleeker than the Phase 6. I’ll be interested to see it’s performance. Full house wing version Bill?

Oh, I see, it has a high wing, rather than the mid-wing of the P6.
I shall have to give it a thorough inspection next weekend Bill!

Not looking great as in no wind or rain or both? It has been good weather here in Dublin most of the week and last weekend was great, was hoping to work on my tan this weekend on the sun kissed slopes of the big L!!!

Thanks jumbo same up here in the north  :D  it's been great weather for September  don't mind the no wind bit as long as it's not chucking it down
I can bring a electric model and a few light wind models  as long as we can get flying  :D

Yeah, despite my belief that ‘props are for pussies,’ if the forecasters can be believed, I think a little bit of electric thrust could be beneficial this weekend. Mercifully no rain is forecast but only 2 - 5 kph SE winds on Sunday.

I think this is gonna be a weekend for 'Floaters' lads.

Oh well, Fred will be happy! :D

So the late nights I have been putting in this week trying to get a new sloper finished may be for nought      :?:

I think I may have an electric model I can put back together for backup (I scavenged the parts for the glider). I suppose somebody could tow my little micro quark up to a reasonable hight for me?

Hello all :)

Well, if you start to look at forecast and rely 100% on them, you might fly maybe once a year

Bring a light glider, and an heavy one.
That's also not bad from time to time to fly something like you don't have an engine, a bit of thumbs/brain flying don't hurt from time to time  :P

Well, anyway, Little Keith knows me too well :)  :P

He makes me sick  .  (and he’s French, which hurts all the more! )

Keith, Andrew has something for you from me. Small token for the model you passed on to me a few years ago.

Good Morning folks!

Here is the big L this morning in all her glory (Clear of cloud) :D .
Alas at 07.30 the wind speed was zero. :(  Temperature is 12 degrees C. Provided the wind picks up a little there is the makings of an enjoyable day. :D  :D

C U up there.

Fist flight of the day. Wee bit of a breeze here having trouble keeping my wing in the air. Need to try with something lighter
Title: September fly in at the big L
Post by: Happy Days on September 28, 2014, 06:54:52 AM
The lift was very light to start with yesterday and for myself I could only get a 2mtr polyhedral to stay in the air, but by mid afternoon the breeze had picked up a little and some more adventurous models could be put through their basic flight manoeuvres.
Weezels flying in combat could be seen flying in great abundance. 5 or 6 were buzzing around close in looking not unlike a swarm of oversize butterflies, stimulating roars of approval from their owners and onlookers when collisions occurred.  I understand they are not made any more, (Weezels I mean, not their pilots,) else I might be tempted……. :?:

I couldn’t even begin to list the names of all the pilots who turned up on the Big L yesterday, there were just too many. Despite Richard and Bill from the north not being able to make it :( , by 2pm I counted 14 gliders flying off of the south slope and there were still a whole bunch of guys standing around back at the car park chatting and eating. Certainly there were at least 20+ pilots in total. ( I can remember a September Glide In, on the same slope, when there was just Fred, Peter, Dennis and myself. Could it be my magnetic personally that’s attracting all these people? :D …….Errr.. no, you‘re right :?  ….probably not. )
Two potential new comers made inquiries about how to join our happy little “Band of Brothers.” ME, a brother of FRED   Perish the thought!!
Martin, who has recently moved to New Ross from Tipperary demonstrated his skills-on-the-sticks by flying a borrowed 100” Riser with great confidence and ability  . Plus, at the end of the afternoon, Graham, (or maybe Graeme) confessed to a life long desire to become embroiled in the world of ailerons, elevators, batteries and butterfly brakes ect. You’ll never see another hill, mountain, quarry, or sand dune in the same light again Graham…you’ve been warned!

So, what joys await us today? I dare say the “Moss House” crew will be hung-over as usual on a Sunday morning. May be they’ll emerge by post meridian. Winds are forecast to be a little lighter today from the S - SW so I’m off to put my polyhedral on charge. See you up there lads. 8)

I had a wonderful day on Saturday meeting a whole bunch of people who had only been names on the forum and spending time flying with them. There were also a few people I had not seen since the mid 70's.

A couple of mishaps, forgot my wing joiner for my small slope model and 1200mah batteries for my 2m electric. I did manage to get in a few good flights with 300 mah batteries in the electric model ( which ensured I did not cheat with motor use).
The turnout was great and the atmosphere was excellent.
I topped the day off by purchasing a 2m Mouldie and now face the prospect of getting it back to Canada on Tuesday.
Thanks to everyone

Well home again, and nursing a sick body    that hill took it's toll  :D

Thanks for a great weekend all, the winds were light but the spirits were high and the never dampened....

@john O'Sullivan, John thanks for making the effort to come along, it was a pleasure to meet with you and talk about the considerable experience and design work you have achieved over the years. Your enthusiasm and passion for the sport is infectious.

@JP, well my friend you've had a considerable impact on young Tom..... We were about a half hour on the road this afternoon and he hadn't said much and then came out this this gem.....

"Dad, you know JP?......... I think he's a good role model for me!!!!!!!"

Only but a privileged few have had such accolade.....

Needless to say I'll be taking him to the doctor on Monday to make sure he's not flipped out

So once again the south slope provided the lift although with the wind being just a slight bit lighter than it had on Saturday, only the lightest of models took to the sky,….. or those that had the benefit of a little mechanical thrust  . Some members of the group managed to stay aloft for ages  , others struggled and eventually had to take that walk of shame.  At one point I even saw Fred walking down the slope to collect his model……So he is human after all! :P  Stephen benefited from the occasional use of his Phoenix’s propeller while JP and Andy did their best to maintain height and indeed succeeded for the most part. Big Keith,,,,,,you need a model with a lighter wing loading my friend :!: ,……with winter approaching,…..get building! :D  Justin kept launching his totally home made and home designed models,  perhaps a little refinement is needed for such light conditions?
Incidentally Patrick showed up on the slope in the morning,….. without a model!!  Nice to see you again Patrick but if you want to be an Aero Modeller, you need a model aircraft. (The clue is in the title, Patrick  )

Unfortunately the skies darkened around midday and a little precipitation descended upon us all. Not a lot, indeed some pilots kept flying throughout the shower. Fortunately there was only one shower and other than that the sun shone warmly down upon us.

It seems that the “Moss House” mob had had a riotous time the previous evening. So much so that they had recorded their activities on a phone and proceeded to serenade the entire Nine Stones car park of people with it during Sunday’s BBQ. (There are some mighty strange goings on in that B&B,… I’m tell you! )

So there we have it. The last official Glide-In of the Ireland Slope Rebels for 2014, and certainly the most populated. Talking about the numbers who had attended, during the BBQ on Sunday, we recon there must have been a total of 25 -30 pilots the previous day. Certainly a record number.

I saw plenty of people with cameras during the glide-in, may be some of them will be kind enough to post the fruits of their work on the forum.

If not before, I’ll see you next year lads………

Another great fly in on the big L. Thanks to all who attended. Had a good weekend walking up and down the slope fetching my crashed models  and all the repair sessions back at the car.

Back at work now and my legs are aching however would happily swap places and be back on the slope. Looking forward to my next trip down Mt. Leinster.

I've been a muppet for over 30 years, why stop now after all that practice?

Being in the fortuitous position of having just received a considerable tax rebate and waiting on another being processed, I'm using my wiles on the Financial Director to procure more wings.

Considerable time has been spent on Hobbyking adding bits and bobs to the wishlist to enable fumbling attempts at building. Justin's creation looked deceptively simple and would be a good copy with a few micro servos. I'll maybe place an order after the house move is complete.

David,
you'd be better with a Phase  or 6, or maybe an SAS Ace, Sailplanes international Secret Weapon. Would teach you far more than any flying wing.

I believe Fred has designed a slope trainer that might also be a good start and having built some of Freds designs will go together very easily.

Hello everyone :)

Finally managed to get a bit of time to put something together, but before anything else, a big thank you for all the pilots who attended the event!
Still not sure of the final numbers on the Saturday, but as Keith said, we were between 25 and 30 (10~12 on the Sunday)! Full car park, and up to 14 gliders in the air at the same time at one point!

What to say? From the Weasel fleet from the SFRC lads doing some combat! (Next time, I'll do myself a combat wing! Need to get in that melee!!    :D ) to fast mouldies from Pavel, Ed and the SFRC, TD gliders, Scale gliders, flying wings, home made machines from Justin etc etc, too many to count them all, but as usual, variety was the main word, and despite the number of people and flights, no incidents to report    :D
We are getting good at this flying thingy

Lots of people to catch up with on the day (sorry John, wish we discussed more! Hopefully next year!!), so myself , I only managed to get up the slope at around 4pm with my ASH!   Lots of flying still done anyway. We left at around 7pm  :D

I think everybody had a great week end! We also saw a few new faces, and that's always a good result to bring new people to this great hobby of throwing powerless machines from the top of a mountain!

Here is a link to a few photos. Sorry, I don't have much, but if you have some, please feel free to send them to me, and I'll update the gallery.

Well this man's Financial Director contacted him to see how many sheets of foam board would be required to build a glider...

Looks like I might need to put in that order with hobbyking!

I'm sure much advice shall be sought to build one; like where to buy balsa in Ireland and how one would work it.

Bear in mind I have 10 left thumbs.
