Title: The Micro Quark.. For when a Quark 2M is too big!
Post by: Fred on March 27, 2015, 15:10:18 PM
Or because you want to save that forest and use the minimum amount of balsa to make a flying machine :)

So, here we go, thanks to Ronan, the Micro Quark is back on the table, and like the Quark 2M, is provided as a free plan :)

Thanks to Ronan, Benoit and Andrew for being the guinea pigs on that one :)

I made a quick page, but a more decent article will be available in due date (in French) with the full build instructions etc etc, but that one really is easy to build, and even easier to build if you have little tiny fingers! :)

And my article with plans:

I'll cut a few kits next week, and I have some carbone tubes. I try to get mine done for our next meeting :)

Hi Fred,
Would it balance with an electric motor up front?
John.

Hey John,

With a light setup (it is light, you don't need much), should be OK.
Not a lot of space for the battery, but that can be installed in the canopy.
With a 2S 500mah should be easy peasy :)

Thanks Fred,
I'll have a kit when ready.

Fred

Are there any plans to stock a kit of the Quark 1.2M ?

Would be a nice addition to the fleet.

Spoken with Fred and my Mini Quark should be on the way soon.

What is the view on servos for this model.

Would Hobby King HSX900 servos would be good enough?

I notice in one someone replaced TGY1440 with Ripmax SD100 which are about £16 each in the UK.

Happy to pay the extra though I can get 4 HXT900 for the price of one SD100.

Never used HXT900 before so open to your advice?

I appreciate any thoughts on this and that the old adage stands true one gets what one pays for.

Hi Al,
Hxt900 although good for smaller models may not suit the large aileron load and do strip gears. Get the hobbyking 939mg or similar metal gear servos which are reasonably priced but don't mix with other servos as problems with interferance occur.
John.

John,

Thanks for that the 939mg look good, just a little to thick as I would like to avoid the unseemly bulge on the top surface. Looking for something 8mm or 9mm think ideally.

Ok, let's go crazy, and make a second model with the first one...
And the winner is the Lunak!
This is basically a "scale" Micro Quark :)
Wings are the same, so you only have the fuselage to make, and done! 2 Models in one  :D

Coming soon!

My Quark Mini Wings are looking good.

How does one cut the ailerons off from the wing. Carefully is my first thought :) Saw or knife or anything else?

Suggestions most welcome.

Thank you.

Hi Al,
I put a few pieces of double sided tape on the spars, stuck a steel ruler on them and cut through the spars separately top and bottom with a knife. I then used a junior hacksaw blade to cut the ply ribs alligning the previous cuts and a knife for the balsa ones.
John.

John,

Thank for that makes sense, I knew it involved a long straight rule, the double side tape is what I was missing.

Managed to do it, took a while but slow and steady and it is done.

Now all ready for covering the model!

Ironing :)

More at some stage, but very pleased with the result.
And only 3 hrs of work start to finish.

Today, the wings and servos... Hope it rains!  :P

Fred, I’ve come to the conclusion that you are obsessed with time.  I imagine your house must be full of clocks. (In between the model gliders)

Whenever you post message about building something, you always mention how long it took you to do it. :P

The new Micro is coming along nicely! :D

Well my Micro Quark is nearly done, just got to add the nose and maybe a little lead, cover the nose, then she is ready for the maiden. Just copied the setting for my Quark 2M and made a few tweaks and radio is setup.

Enjoyed the build.

Looking good Alistair!
And thanks for the comments on the build  :D

@Keith, this is an oldish habit. That started a while back, when I heard people talking about building gliders at a meeting. They were talking thousands of hours build time for a 1/4 scale glider...So, at the time, I was building my Grunau Baby, and took the actual build time as I was going along... Took me about 70 hours if I remember. Even if you double that time, we are far from the thousand of hours build I hear there and there.

Anyway, my point is, lots of people do not build anything, because the time it need is one of the main excuse.. By the time they finish to watch crap on TV, they would have a Micro Lunak Fuselage build and covered.
This is also a question I keep being asked for the kits.

Oh now I see!

So your advertising slogan is,

“Don’t be bored watching television, Build one of Fred’s model gliders and time will fly by!”

Good call.

No but seriously, if all the people who say they don't have time stopped watching sh*te on TV, a bit more stuff would be done! (I'm getting old, I almost feel like a Keith  :P )

Well my Micro Quark is finished. Just need to check the TX is set up correctly, add a little weight for forward COG for maiden flight. Mine did not need any lead to balance as per plan. Weighed in at 368g, or in old money 13oz.

Now need some good weather for a maiden.

Well I it was a nice evening a 9mph Northerly wind so a quick trip to the local slope and I maidened the mini quark and landed her safely if a little fast! Needed a few clicks of up! Had 4 flights in total taking a little of the extra lead out each flight. So on last flight all the extra lead had gone and COG was as per plan. I think it can go back a bit but no more lead to take out! Had the rates set to minimal movement and she was fine.

Once I get more confident I can reduce the rates (I have 4 positions). I will also mix some up in when I raise the spoileroms to help landings.

She was very agile and gets blown around in gusts.

Overall really pleased with the model great fun.

The Micro Quark is getting popular (well deserved if you ask me :) )
Received a nice email from the lads at the Menez Hom (Christophe). Micro Quark built without any issue, and first flight was a non event. Flew great from the launch :)

You can follow, in French, the build on the Menez Hom forum here: http://avdpmhforum.xoo.it/t954-Micro-Quark.htm

I was contacted by Bill from RCSoaringDigest a little while asking me if he could do articles about my mini series.
Honoured! And if you download tye latest magazine, The Micro Quark is featured:) Brillant paging, and he managed to do miracles with poor photos!

If not done already, download it! + the other great article in what is the best magazine dedicated to our little world!

At last a decent blow for the Quark. Previously just flown in scratchy lift. Today was really good and the Quark was great fun. Struggle to land, so it is better to have aileron up to land or aileron down?

Hi Alistair,

Very good, glad all went well and you have fun!

For landings, I have to say, I had nothing on mine. I pull, and slow it down as much as I can. Very hard to stall, so on windy days, you do an helicopter decent :)
Otherwise, I would say Ailerons down. I would do 2 values. 30% and 50% down. To be tested at height of course :)
