great thanks fred and ronan
i was trying to do in one piece
.... doh !!!
small pieces
was it 3 mm balsa ?
-
Hmm, looks like it on the photos.
More to sand :)
-
hahaha
love sanding
also thinking of a removable fin/ rudder
for transport etc so not to smash off
you think this is viable on this one
have a few ideas how to do
if you have any it would be a great help
thanks for all your help as always
mick
-
Yeah, good thinking on the removeable one.
You can do it by a system of rod (piano wire) going along the rudder, on the hinge line if you see what I mean.
Photos from Internet to illustrate :)

like you would tailplane
just trying to think how to secure
-
heres a bit more progress

Tail looks good Mick! :)
-
thanks fred , a bit blurred pics ... to much xmas brandy
-
heres a couple more of the canopy frame

Very good!
You did master the brass welding technique!
-
yea eventually, thanks to your guidence fred
just trying to work out how to make a lock for it
hinges done ,
hopefully start on wings next week
-
just finished the hinges and canopy catch
tried to copy full size as close as poss --and it works
-
Very nice Mick!
I was going to suggest a piece of tape, but your way looks a bit more professional! ::)
-
thanks fred
i will make a sliding window in canopy , and then can just push locked with finger
having said that , belt and braces with tape as well
-
finished the canopy today and made yet another catch , this one works better
and is more scale like
and it all fits
-
Good job 8)
-
Agree! Really looking good Mick! 8) 8) :-*

-
Pfffeeww, it fits :)
Nice job Mick! And this canopy really does look good! :-*
-
thanks fred
good cutting is what makes it easy ....lol
how did you hinge the ailerons , did you use covering along top ?
-
::) ::) Thanks
For the hinging, I did it like a pig and used Blenderm.
One of those "I do it quick, I'll do it properly later" jobs :-[
-
hahaha
it looks ok on pics and vid and it works
i dint suppose anyone has any idea how to make a sliding
window for canopy ?
i have a few ideas and trying but if anyone has done one
any help is more than welcome
also what size are full size ones
if anyone knows
-
I have an article somewhere about making them.
When you think of it, it's only 2 bits of plastic used as a rail, and the window itself :)
I try to find it!
Alternatively, you can buy them :)
Here is the Topmodel one: http://www.topmodelcz.cz/index.php?&desktop_back=eshop&action_back=&id_back=0&desktop=eshop&action=zbozi_detail&id=12957
But you will have the same with Graupner, MPX etc I believe.
Fred
-
thanks fred
prob being over fussy , have tried with the plastic rails and will just have to bolt together
as any glue just marks them ,
will try oce more or order from topmodelz :)))
-
hi gents
just finished cockpi
-
seems to have squashed pics :'(
-
Looks great, very realistic.
-
her is first put together at our winter projects night
-
Hi Mick
How is the Ka8 coming on? Have you any more photos of your progress it is looking great so far. I am working on one myself at present and have the Fuss and tail-plane almost finished and ready for covering. I will hopefully get to start on the wings shortly and I will post some photos very soon.
Can you advise if you managed to source a 1/3 scale sliding window for the canopy I need to install one on mine in order to have access to open the canopy latch.
Keep up the good work
Joe
-
hi
thanks for the intrest , its been on hold for a while , due to house move and apperently more important jobs like decorating and hanging curtains
hope to get back into it this weekend , i just need to sheet top of wings and air brakes and aileron
and cover
i didnt get a sliding window , couldnt make one that was good enough and bought on didnt look right
i open canopy by a thin sheet of brass sliding between canopy and frame to puch the magnectic handle away
will try to find pics
be great to see you progress
-
hope these pics help
the catch connects to a magnet in fuse
will take some more pics to explain more
-
Thanks for the update Mike hope you get to progress the model soon.
Did you try the windows from Topmodel the ones they have listed are the wrong scale and would probably look wrong or did you source them somewhere else. I have made a spring loaded canopy latch as in full size and will probable have to do as you suggest and make up a tool to open and close via the small gap between canopy and fuselage.
Look forward to seeing progress on the model soon.
Joe
-
hi
i tried the glider uk one
i had about 4 attempts at making one but just never looked good ( glad i didnt cut into canopy )
spring catch is good
hope to see pics of your progress
-
Hi Mick
Will check my kit tomorrow and let you know what I find,
-
finally frame done
just got to cover now
it looks like going to be solartex as cant find diatex anywhere
-
just starting the covering
-
one more
-
It look's nice, like that colour combo.
-
Looking good Mick!
Are you going for the one from your full size club? :-*
-
yea a bit same colours but , no side window
and slightly different design , as not much good at masking and spraying so making it simple ...
-
finally finished
all ready for maiden
-
a couple more
-
Really nice. love the vintage colours. Good luck with maiden.
John.
-
beautiful looking model. Health to fly it
-
thankyou gents
fingers xd all goes well
-
Very nice build again Mick! Like the color scheme!!
First flight planned soon? :-*
-
fanally maiden of ka8b
very pleased , although i didnt fly it , didnt trust myself , although nothing to worry about
thanks fred for a great model
-
Congratulations for the successful first flight!! :-*
Looks like the launch went without any issues, and the color scheme suit it very well (I like it a lot!)
No airbrakes for the landings? Seems very touchy on the elevator when going to land.
-
one of the airbrakes would not open in flight
but would open on ground , might need stronger servos
so kept close
-
Hi Mick
Congrats on the successful maiden, I must say the model looks very well and I also like the colours. Hope you have many a long and enjoyable flights with it.
What servos have you used to operate the air brakes? Could it be that something is binding on the brakes when they are being pushed back by the airflow? Let me know what you find just in case I have a similar issue to resolve on mine prior to painting.
Joe
-
hi joe
thanks for the compliment
it flew lovely with only needing 3 clicks of down elevator , just to make it penetrate
as fred said a bit heavier is better
it flies as full size one -sedate
i used savox mini metal gear servos for airbrakes , but like you said when wind blowing against
just not strong enough
they work fine on ground and workshop
so going to do some surgery and use standard size but stronger , or might even go servoless units
and put the thin ply top on to match wing
-
HHmmmm, before doing big surgery, I would try to give more room for the airbrakes to open, might be a simple as that. If you have 1mm around the airbrakes free, make it 2! Try to blow air on the wing, and see where exactly is the problem.
I am using 2 mini servos, and airbrakes are opening just fine on mine, but I had to open a bit more at the end of the airbrakes to operate properly (I think I have a 3mm gap)
-
thanks fred
will try that first
-
Hey Mick,
Got your message, will sort you out today!
-
thanks fred
star as ever
