It's this time of the year again! :) new build for 2017, an enlarged version of my Grunau Baby.
So far, a no brainer, going together like a charm.
Later today, plan is to start on the fuselage.

Merki :)
J'attaque le fuselage.

Fuselage started!
A bit more advanced than in the photo (camera's full), all is going great so far, easy build :)
-
I was also building a tailplane today - this one belongs to a 1/4 scale Slingsby Gull. Wings (in the background) and fuselage are well advanced.
-
Looking really good Peter!
And Happy New Year to you and the family! :)
-
Ok, progress! :)
Next step was to do the pilot's top fuselage frame. Everything is tacked in place, then glued.
Pilot installed to have a look and compare with photos. It fits, and it does look good!
-
A bit more work is also done on the fuselage. Elevator and rudder just put in for the photos.
The very front part of the glider is now drying, and more stringers were put on the fuselage.
Also, decided to change the top of the fuselage, at the back, from a 5x5mm wood by a laser cut piece. Much much better! (and easier to put in also!)
Tomorrow, hopefully, the fuselage will be ready to be sheeted! But first, I'll scratch my head for the servos / electronic and tow hooks implementations before closing it.
So far build is dead easy, happy! :)

Looks great, btw love the new workshop!
Happy New Year

Thanks Ralph :)
I try to get the photos as close as possible to the subject, so you don't see the mess in there! :-[
-
Almost there for the fuselage!
Tomorrow, if all goes well, servos for the elevator and rudder.
Scratch head for the tow release, and maybe, start the sheeting :)
Can't wait to get cracking on the wings! :-*

Ventus de 2.5m. Celui entré en collision avec Juju a Falaise.
Pas réparé encore... Si un jour j'ai le temps :(

Ok J ai reçu ton colis 8)

Ok, works continue!
Fuselage removed from its jig.
Battery tray done, just have to put the rudder servo / links in place, and the Tow hook, and I can start sheeting :)
And that free up the workbench for the first wing :)
-
Wow ! I like that ! :-*

Looking good! 8)

Very little time at home this week :'( but I managed an hour in the workshop today! :) Moved a bit forward on the Grunau.
Rudder: Sheeted and stained. I usually use "teak" varnish, but this time, I went for something lighter, and I really like it! Varnish is "Antic Pine".
Rudder horns are in steel, that I have for years in a box. Happy with them, they do look nice! And solid!
Waiting for it to dry, and I can cover it.
Nose: I went with a balsa block. The sheeting will them go over. I usually do it "hollow", but I wanted to try it this way.
I made the tow hook, very classic with a 10mm Aluminium tube with a piece of piano wore going through. Epoxied on the block, itself epoxied on the first former. Just need to sans in shape after that.
Battery shelf done also.
Fine sheeting started, so as the canopy area.
Hopefully, more progresses next week!
Sorry for the dark photos, did not paid attention when I took them :(

Hello Fred 8)
I have a couple of questions on this build which i am sure you will answer, but
1) how are you going to keep the wings together on the fuselage ?
2) how is the elevator servo and elevator horn going to go ?
I renovated 1:3 scale 1 of this a year or 2 ago ;)
-
Hi JG,
To answer your questions:
1> Good old hooks and rubber band :) On the GB, there is a metal plate that cover the fuselage/wings, so it's all hidden. I keep it practical in this area rather than purely scale, especially when you don't se it :)
2> Elevator servo will be positioned under the stabilisator. To connect the elevator horn to the clevis, I will use the same as the real one, and use the hatch on the side of the fuselage. Same as the wings, practicality over scale. Everything is hidden of course, and very easy to connect, and also to maintain.
Saying that, my first plan was to put the servo in the stab, in the middle, but the space is a tad too small for a decent servo (not wide enough).
Hope this helps

Fred - I knew you would have it sorted ;) what is the wing span ?
-
WS is 4.6m (1/3 scale :) )
Alright, time for an update!
Received my sheetings! So I started on the wings.
Not much work at this stage. Spars are my usual 8x8mm x2, and all the sub assembly are glued first, like the airbrakes box, servo supports etc etc.
Then, all that is glued on the top spar, upside down as usual.
Bottom spar is glued, so as all the ribs, so photos tonight of this stage! Left to do: False LE after setting the first rib to the correct angle, glue the TE, wing joiner tubes.
And I'll start to have a look at the airbrakes now.
-
Alright, so, after a looonnnggg break on the Grunau, back to it!
Servo trays are glued in place. Elevator servo is under the elevator.
Sheeting of the fuselage has started. All done in 0.6mm plywood, and I am using the same method as my Ka1. It's long and painful (you do twice the work), but I kind of like it, as everything then fits perfectly without any fuss and you do proper wood management also :) (thin plywood is not cheap!)
Rudder has been covered, and already received a coat of varnish. I went with a slightly lighter color, and should be more vibrant once I put 5 of 6 coats of clear on it. Well, that's the plan, works in my head anyway :)

What happening whit this built?
Is't done ?
-
Hi Conny,
I wish! :( Still hanging in the workshop, making sure I hit it with my head at least twice a day!
1/2 wing as been built, and the sheeting is pretty much at the same stage.
I know, I know... :( :-[
