Title: 1/3 scale Ka1/Ka3 combo
Post by: gerryb on January 26, 2017, 22:59:55 PM
to quote baldrick, 'i have a cunning plan......!'  rudolph kaiser designed and built the ka1 and ka3 gliders to use the same wings and v-tail, so why not do the same thing in model form?

fred has already done the ka3 as a kit in 1/3 sc and the ka1 in 1/4 sc so if he did the ka1 in 1/3 sc you could have 1 set of wings and tail and
2 fuselages for 2 different models.

i know he has been working on the plans of the ka1 for some time, so hopefully the kit will be available soon.

in the meantime, i've started building the ka3, tail first, on the wings at the moment and the fuse next week.  unfortunately, for some reason my photos won't load up.

can anyone suggest how i can solve this problem?

regards,

gb

Looking forward to see it :)
And hopefully will get time to cut the Ka1! (at work 20hrs a day these days  >:( >:( )

What is the error you are getting for the photos?

I tried and it looks OK (see below, just received photos of a completed Ka3 in Italy  :-* )

hi fred,
i wrote my few words as above and then tried to add photos from my photo file but nothing appeared in the preview box.

i took the photos with my camera phone, would that be the problem?

Hmm, that's strange, all working fine for me.

Can you try a photo from a website, maybe save the one above, and put it on your post as we know that one works if you see what I mean. Maybe a size issue (too big, I think there is a limit on top of my head, but that limit is quite high if I remember).

Anyway, first Ka1 should be cut tomorrow :) Files are ready  :D

i usually call him 'frank'.  he normally lives in my spacewalker but recently he did his gliding 'A' cert, so he's ready to go soaring.  hopefully next month.

some more photos of the fuse under construction..............

I thought it was Max Biaggi!

Hi Gerry,

Nice work and nice photos. Will we see you next week? I haven't flown for ages but I do hope to get there at some stage. I have some DIY in hand at the moment and my models are somewhat out of reach - the old hanger has been demolished. I charged the batteries yesterday with the hope of getting one or 2 models ready to fly.

hi jim,

thanks for kind words.

i had to google 'max biaggi' to see the comparrison and yea, you're right.  i have another model pilot who bears a very strong resemblance to richard branson.

yea, i hope to get to mt leinster on saturday.  it will be for the one day only.  looking forward to meeting up with everyone again.  hope the weather improves.  i think if everyone spends the week on their knees, it might work.

see you then jim

Eventually I got the Ka3 finished. First flight tonight and it flew beautifully. Wind was quite strong, 15kts, N westerly, out over Lough Derg. Hopefully I can add some photos, no flying shots i’m afraid. Thanks again Fred, a very nice machine. Plan now is to build a Ka1 fuse to match the wings and tail of the Ka3.  Regards, GB.

Started the build on the Ka1, formers fit together like a glove. First photos are just a dry fit. I had to cut the stringers lengthways to get them to bend to follow the curve of the fuse. Lots of hi-tech clamping devices required to keep everything in place until glue dries. More photos soon....

I thought the sockets for the tail plane carbon rods were a bit short for a plug in tailplane so I made new ones which are about 25mm deeper than the original.

Looks good, so glue it up. I used 30 min epoxy and a mix of saw dust added....

Finally, the strut mount. Didn’t work out quite as I planned so I had to ‘modify’ it to make it fit. All’s well in the end....

Easiest way would be to do it in MSpaint, photo or irfanview on your own PC and then reupload them. Not sure if it can be done once they're on GI

Hi all, update on Ka1/Ka3 combo.....
After a disastrous crash of the Ka3 some time last summer, the whole project was put on the shelf until I stopped crying and got some new enthusiasm for it. That happened earlier this week and in the space of about 3 days, the Ka3 was fixed and is now ready for test flights again.
I am back on the Ka1 and have started sheeting the fuse. Because the ‘3 broke badly in the wing mounting area, I decided to beef up the ‘1 with extra formers. Hopefully, it will all work out in the end.
Some photos......

Hi all, happy Easter.
Update  on Ka1/Ka3 combo.....
Finished sheeting the fuse, filled all the little holes and gaps, so now I’m ready to cover it. I plan to use light nylon cloth and diluted PVA glue. I used this system years ago when I built my ASK 13 and it worked out very well for me.
Some photos of the finished fuselage.....

Ger, I'm starting into finishing off a 1/4 scale Ka3 that I picked up unfinished from Ralph. I was just reading around the various build blogs. What did you cover your Ka3 in? What do you generally use? I'm tempted to order Oracover, but I must admit that I might just stick with Orafilm for expediency. I know it will be a little bit shiny, but 100m off the slope will anyone notice?
How did you finish your red one with the white wing striping? It looks very well.
Thanks
Kevin

Hi Kev,
I used white  profilm for the wings and a Hobby King red for the fuselage. As you say, they are a bit shiny, but when the model is in the air, you hardly notice.
I also built a 1/4 sc version and covered it with Solartex (unfortunately now no longer available). You can see this model on p6 of Scale, my one is blue and yellow and another one by Kieran Wallace which is red and white.
Best of luck with your model, don’t forget to post photos and keep us up to date.
Regards, Gerry Buckley

Thanks Gerry for the info. I'm working my way through the different build blogs on the forum taking screen shots of details before I start work. I'm tempted by a film covering but a certain gentleman in west Cork is convincing me to go with Oratex. He might be right; I'll see!
I must order up bits and bobs this week from Hollein shop before I get working so no immediate rush to make a decision. I have a Wasabi that I bought back in 2006 on the bench at the moment to be assembled. It's like chalk and cheese looking at the two planes side by side.
I will definitely post pics as I go.
