Title: "Come Fly With Me" Sunday 4th July
Post by: Happy Days on June 30, 2010, 07:31:33 AM
If anyone’s interested, the winds are looking nice for Big L. this Sunday. :)

Predicted at 15km/h westerly that would translate to around 20km/h at the slope. (A gental breeze rolling over the ridge.) And what a lovely ridge it is too. Just a few meters from the cars, and loads of soft heather to land in :D.  Oh,... pure heaven  (Provided it doesn't rain :( )

Hey Keith,
Sounds good, love that slope. Was just flying with Fergal and mentioned it to him, looks like he's will try and make it as well. Fingers crossed the rain stays away.

Good Man Ed!

The morning looks cloudy so probably wont get there till early pm. (That’ll give you time to shake off Saturday nights’ hang over  )

Hope Fergal’s cured his interference problems :)

Slight down side,……..the wind is predicted to be slightly less now :( , still enough to fly but not “Bank & Yank” conditions.
You never know, it might change back again.

Just looked at the forecast and meteireann are still predicting a good wind.  Still looks good enough for some “Bank & Yank” , if this is your thing.  I don't think I need to bring my floater.  What do you thing?

What time are you guys planning on being that Mt. L.  I need to know so I can plan my hangover.

As regards the interference problems, I have had no problems since I flew at Bray Head.  I might change over to 2.4 MHz this winter.

Anyway, hope to see you guys at Mt. L. tomorrow.

Best regards,

Fergal

What time tomorrow? Good question Fergal. Well the answer is; The time when the rain and cloud cover leaves the mountain. The general forecast consensus seems to be around 12.00 - 13.00. (Let’s hope they’re right)

Bank & Yank is good, in my opinion. If you have a combat model, bring that along as well. You might need some ballast if Met Eireann’s predictions are right. Somehow I doubt we’ll have 45K mean wind speeds in the afternoon though. (That would be around 60Km/h at the slope. :D  )

Glad you’ve not had a repeat of your interference probs. I’ve never heard of anyone getting rf probs on Big L. There was only one time such a thing happened, that I know of. Poor ol’ Joe got shot down by another Tx.

Best thing, = Be sure,……with two point four! (Even rhythms!! )

I had a message from Joe saying he might join us. But he's a busy family man these days so he might not be able.

I’ll post a weather report in the morning.

Well good morning ladles’ & jelly spoons. Actually it’s not very ‘good’ at all at the moment. :(

Here on Co Wexford the situation is:-

Heavy cloud/ mist with visibility of 500 mtrs.

Light rain.

Wind speed: 40 gusting 65Km/h from the S.W.

Temperature: 12 degrees C

Pressure: 113mB falling

Humidity: 96%

Can’t see Big L at this time, too much cloud and mist.

If I were you guys I’d stay in bed for the next couple of hours   and hopefully this will blow itself through by midday.

I’ll tell you when the situation starts improving.

Thanks Keith,
Going meet my Dad there for around 12.30/ 1.00 anyway so will probably go for a walk first if the slope is unflyable. Phone will be on if anyone wants a weather update from that time.

See you all then

Lovely Jubbley, ……………..broken cloud with bright sunshine, Clear view of mountain which is cloud free, winds have abated slightly to 35 gusting 50Km/h. westerly. That’ll do nicely!!

See you on the slope! :D

Some people learn, some learn slowly, and some never learn…..But I like it! :!:

There was loads of lift in winds of 50 - 60+ Km/h on the Big L. Unfortunately Fergal couldn’t make it so it was up to Ed and myself to exploit the afternoons flying facilities on the mountain.

First up went a foamie (Skua) to find exactly where the most lift was. Followed by Ed’s Pace (with full ballast) and boy is it fast.   Not the sort of model to be flying with a hangover, at least not in those conditions. Fortunately Ed was as sober as …..er…….well I’m not sure, but he assured me “He hadn’t touched a drop” (Like I believe ‘im! )

The Phase 6 was next in the air. Armed with ballast equal to 50% of her normal AUW she penetrated well into the onrush of air. Unfortunately I mistakenly flew her into the sun while over the landing area and by the time I regained my focus it was too late to save her. Like I said, some people never learn, but I like flying where there’s an element of risk. (At least, that’s my excuse for a broken plane. :( )

A three meter mouldy was next to be assembled by Ed. Again with full ballast, it had enormous energy retention and roared about the skies. :P  God only knows what speed it attained. Can’t remember it’s name, what was it Ed?

Finally I offered my new mouldy to the sky. It’s a 2mtr bird. Looks very much like a Luna only with a V tail. Called a ‘Whisper’ she certainly doesn’t…….whisper I mean. In fact she screeches quite loudly. Good fun on a low pass!

Thoroughly pleasant afternoon………..Don’t think it’s gonna be quite so windy next weekend. But I love ‘em when they are! 8)

This is the Phase 6....but I'll have it in the air again soon!

Tough luck Keith, but the sun has been there all of your life (Looooooooooooong time) You'd think you'd know where it is by now!

Hope you get it back in the air soon.

Better day than I had, thermal comp cancelled because of the wind and no one to go play on the slope with

Lucky !!  :(

Was watching the big wind we had in Dublin, thinking I would much prefer to be at the slope than packing stuffs in boxes for Germany!

Never mind Fred. No doubt there will be plenty of big winds in Germany. (With so many Frenchmen around there’ll certainly be a lot of hot air!)

Okay, I’m running!!!

Hey Keith,
what a great few hours of flying we had, really enjoyed that. Did you stay much longer? did the weather eventually swing around to the West?Always worth the trip down for the West slope, a real Corker even though the wind wasn't square to it on Sunday it was producing huge warm lift. Real shame about the Phase though, was doing pretty well considering how windy it was!!!!!!! Very impressed with the new mouldie Keith, very smooth flyer indeed and with no ballast! Me thinks this ship is going to get lots of air time, hope to see lots more of it in the air soon. The ship i few second was the Vikos 3 meter F3F. This was the first time i had ever flown with full ballast in her since buying her from Chris after the last fly in at Mt.L. Definitely an experience in those conditions and look forward to getting her out in similar weather, maybe alittle less windy  but a real treat with that warm strong warm wind and big Blue skies. I had never flew the Pace VXH either with ballast so big day for me with both ships. So in all a pretty successful day for both of us except the wee crash.  Thanks Keith, will be down soon and will keep you posted about Bray Head for the Easterlys

Yea’ great time Ed.  It was a good experience wasn’t it! :D  :D

Thanks for the commiserations on the Phase. If I’d been wearing a cap I could have kept the sun out of my eyes, but it was too windy to keep it on!
It’ll be flying again by the weekend. Just a little more bent than before!

We’ll have to set up some races. 8)  Fred’s talked about it before……..one day.

I had a couple more flights after you left but the wind never came directly onto the slope, and it started to ease down in strength. :(

Was up there again today. Quite windy and what wind there was, was coming straight on to the slope. Flew the Whisper and the 4mtr ASW ………..WWWWWEEeeeeeeeee or in the case of the Whisper, SSSCCCRRREEeeeeeeeeeeeeeccchhhhhh.

My other half tells me I’m just a big kid. (I think she’s right!)

Ok,
Shall we choose a place and a date for the fist one? North or South east or West suits me. Any suggestions?
How many people want to do this anyways, not that it matters but it would be great to know roughly before we get going. Im sure there are people in all corners of the country who would love to give it a lash if it was accessible to them, maybe a few meets in different places it get it rolling. Are we ready to move this to the Race thread? :D

there are some obvious requirements for a site.

Straight (ish) ridge ~150m long. 100m for the course plus abit at each end. Nobody, except the very best, turn anywhere close to the exact 100m.

Needs to face the predominant wind and preferably have other suitable sites close by.

That suggests, Mt Leinster, Tountinna in the South or the Mournes and Slieve Gallion in the North.

If anybody knows other sites suggest them.  Maybe we should move to the race section?

Bray Head has very clean lift for NE and E, prefect for some racing with the added bonus of a mate owning a farm very close to the ridge so would save a loooong walk up that hill. Also for NE that ridge near Mayobidge/Yellow Road in Co.Down only 1 hour and 15 mins from Dublin

Still on the hunt for a good fast glider, count us in if you want to start some racing. The slopes on moneymore mountain would be perfect for racing. I like the idea of flying around the country at different slope sites also. go for it guys lets get some flying in !!
Title: Slopes
Post by: Richard Boyd on July 09, 2010, 12:04:39 PM
Hi guyes sounds like a great idea to have a wee race or two to add to the slope fun we are having. I hope it will be open to all classes of planes and will be fun rather than too serious.
I have flown quite abit on the North Coast and there are quite a few sites, ballerina being the best site I have flown, but one problem is the Ulster gliding club use these ridges during the weekends, a short hoop in the ferry takes you to Greencastle and County Donegal were you have Mallin Head also a great site, back to the North Coast and there is White Park Bay , a massive bowl that has superb clean air rolling in from the Atlantic.
Wish I was their today !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree with you Richard. The first few races at least should be open to ANYTHING.

Wings, ARF's Stargazers. Spirts, Vectors. You name it Fly it! We're only trying to better our own flying and times

Yes Bill, open to all flyers, only rules apply everyone must have fun, fun, fun.
We have been looking for good slope sites all year, and we have found some fantastic slopes in the North along with some fine whiskey to warm the heart on a cold day.

P.S.

Richard the sun is shining in Armagh I could sell you a wet suit cheap!!!!

I’ve never tried racing. :?:   Certainly wouldn’t mind giving it a go!

Not being a very competitive sort of person, I’m with Bill in trying to better our own times rather than competing against others.

As for travelling around the country to different venues,………. don’t mind if I can get there and back in a day. (I’m not into overnight stays. )
