Slope Soaring / Mount Leinster Meeting - 13-14 April

So, here we go again!

Pretty windy, and had a big shower, but so far, 10 pilots showed up from all over the Country

A bunch of flights done, now having a good social catch up. Blue sky is coming our way for an even better day!

Sports / So, I joined a club! SRFC

I must have been talking about it for the last 20 years! And well, this year, you will finally stop hearing me mentioning it, because I finally joined a club! (Well, outside of the ISR! )

The club is the Shankill Radio Flying Club, located at the foot of the Sugar Loaf mountain, about 25 minutes from home, so ideally located!

I must say, of all the clubs I visited around Dublin, this is by far the friendliest and most relax about new comers, and to me, not a surprise their numbers are growing as I was told by Barry Saturday! Totally deserved!

I won’t bored you with the details, all I can say is that it is nice to meet like minded people, and as for me, when it’s not good for gliding, great to have another spot to crash my things

Anyway, here are a couple of photos, I’ll update here as I go along, so stay tuned!

PSS / XF5U “Flying Pancake” PSS

Finally glueing some wood!

Quickly designed, and something I had in mind doing for a very long time! The 50th Macon meeting required something out of the ordinary, and I think I found something never done in PSS!

Will it fly? That’s a problem for later

Root chord is 1.5m, and I needed a special building board.

For Sale / ASW17 fully molded

Hi all,

I might regret it, but I need room!

For sale is my 4.2m ASW17 fully molded with Carbon re-enforcements. Mine is marked as Robbe, but it was marketed under a couple of names, like

Comes fully equipped with all the servos, landing gear,  flaps, airbrakes, tow release and a home made SLS (not by me!).

The SLS is currently removed as I wanted to fly it as a glider only. But easy to re-install (4 bolts)

I can't say much more as I never flew it! (I know, I know  ) but glider is in mint condition, and the only deviation from the kit is the SLS opening (not a fan!)

SLS is home made I believe and made of aluminum and very sturdy. Comes with everything. I know nothing about electrics, so whatever batteries you'll need, I don't know

If my luggage scale is accurate, weight (without SLS) is about 6.9Kgs

PSS / Macon 2023

God, forgot to share about that one!!

So last year, as usual, trip to the Macon PSS event, and as usual, had nothing prepared 

Another great year! The flying conditions were challenging at time, but that's slope soaring (otherwise, we get bored! )

Anyway, you should have been there!

So, what is Macon? Macon is first and foremost, Friends, and food and drinks (lots of it )

For Sale, a F3B glider, hollow molded etc etc (see photos).
WS is 3.18m

I can't remember the name (and they all look the same when I try Google ) So whatever it is, this is the F3B version.

No instructions (did not came with any! But I guess, it is not a beginner's model). Brand new, just put together for the photos. Came with a small bag of accessories, and snake (for the rudder by the look of it).

No Shipping of course, but can bring to meetings if anyone's interested.

Scale / 1/2.5 SHK (5.8m)

Alright, back to that one!

Seeing the great summer, time to prep a couple of machines. And it's the turn of the SHK today!

First flight was a couple of years ago if I recall, and after that weekend, lying in the shed! And that's a shame really has I keep flying the Phoebus I got at the same time... But now, time to get some more hours on it

Today's job:

Cleaning!
Add some scale immat (it will be a mix coming from the usual excellent Mr Fisher's 3 views, but main reg will be as below)
Add a Jeti Max Bec
Add a pilot

And if all goes well weather wise, set it up in the garden to do a quick radio check as it's too big to be put together inside unfortunately.

Misceleanous / Bray air display 2023

It’s that time of the year again!

A couple of photos of this year’s display.  Really wanted to see the Lancaster, but he was a no show on Sunday unfortunately.

Anyway, here are a few photos, less than usual as they are pretty much the same year on year and the lack of sun did not produced great ones as I am far from being a pro!

Misc / Mini spot welder

One of those things that as soon as you try go “why I did not buy one earlier!” 

As I am slowly transitioning to Li-ion batteries, like my good old niamh packs, I decided to make them myself and after doing the usual soldering, decided to invest in a mini spot welder.
And God, I should have invested way sooner! Makes batteries in minutes, clean and very strong!
Did a couple of spot weld on a 1850 battery, and could not tear apart the nickel that was welded with pliers!

Anyway, look at the photos, took me 5 minutes to weld those batteries, and already looking forward to my next batch

For info, there are tons of those spot welders available, the one I have is the SeeSii spot welder. Came with what looks like a lifetime supply of nickel strip, usb charging cable, battery holders and a small file to clean up the connections.

PSS / B52 mini “flat” PSS

I built something else before the Christmas break!

After seeing how the b29 went, I designed a few more using the same principles, and started with the B52.

Nothing much to say on the build really, nice and easy, although the wings were a pain to do because of that pronounced V, but other than that, like the B29, if you have a couple of days to spare, you can build it!

Fuselage is like the b29, front in 3mm plywood, back in 5x5, sheeted top/bottom. And that’s it really.
Elevator is all moving to keep it simple, made of 3mm balsa, so as the rudder (fixed, but can be made functional of course).

Scale / Mini Pilatus B4 SilenceModel

Because I need more gliders! Not!

Alright that one is small, so that’s my excuse! This is one of the proto I have for a while now, and seeing the January weather, better get occupied indoor.

Fuselage is fibre, everything else is built from balsa or plywood. Wings are Quadro also, so that should be interesting!

Not much to say, build is dead easy and moving along. Just the wings to finish now really.
