Road trips / Sunday 17th Feb Wicklow head
« on: February 16, 2008, 18:10:27 PM »
I was going to try Bray Head tomorrow - I was there today on the northern part of the Head (not gliding!) and there was a light but steady breeze from the SE that the gulls were able to use - so it may be possible.  What time were you thiinking of Joe?

Thanks Garry for the details about Bray Head access and parking - really useful.  Are we going to try it then on Sunday?  I am aiming to get there about two I guess but could make it earlier.  Icewind - the more the better so do come along.  The wind is going to very light I fear but the slope looks good and there's a chance of a sea breeze.  Failing that - that offer of some thermal flying off the Shankill field sounds great fun.

This is a potential slope on Bray Head - you can access the Bray coastal path from the road you can see, but not sure where one can get parking.  Also looks like it will work in a south-easterly.

Yes I think you drive through Wicklow Town and on a couple of km to reach the lighthouse.  In terms of other slopes, Bray Head used to be a favourite locality in an easterly but I don't know anyone who has flown it recently.  It certainly looks good - there is access from a road off the Bray-Greystones road - it probably requires a short walk in.  I must recce it and see if there is anywhere to park.  Parts of the Head are very rocky, but others heather covered.

Yes - I'll try and make it.  Just realised how poor the GoogleEarth image of Wicklow Head is!  Meet out at the lighthouse I guess?  Wind looks pretty light.

Good to meet you yesterday David.  We met up at Glencree at 2 to find the wind very far south.  So I put the Eliminator together and David his Fling and we walked up towards the lake, stopping on the low gradient heather-covered slope before the main steep slope down into the lake.  I wasn't sure whether this was going to work but it was great - plenty of lift.  We both clocked an hour in the air and sun even came out.  Very few people around - a very pleasant Sunday afternoon.  I am busy next Saturday, but might try to get out Sunday again.  Looks like the weather is going to be fairly settled for the next while.  What a day today - must have been great up on the slope.

Wind was SSW today so the slope at Killakee was working well (and warm!) - got a good flight in.  Will try Glencree tomorrow at 2ish.

It is such a nice day today (Saturday) I cannot resist going out - Killakee car park at 2.15 and onwards.  May try tomorrow as well but given how light the wind is today and it is meant to slacken further, today might be better if from an awkward direction.

Yes - it is an either/or for me too!  Have to try and judge which is going to be the best day!  See you.

Hi David - welcome also.

I hope to go out this weekend - wind looks as if it is very far south tomorrow which creates problems as we cannot use Killakee and Glencree only works if you walk up above the lake.  At the moment I am planning to go out Sunday afternoon (2.00ish) as the wind looks as if it will be more southeasterly and we can fly from the slope above the road at Glencree, although it looks pretty light so perhaps a day for a floater.

I will post any change of plan.  See you on the slope sometime.

Nice video Fred.  Anybody flying Dublin area this weekend.  Looks like a southerly or southeasterly wind.  Either south of Sally Gap or Glencree.  May be Glencree on Sunday afternoon for me.

Chris - Mount Leinster sounds good for the March meeting but I am unfortunately double booked that weekend so will not be able to make it.

Icewind - tomorrow's weather does not look too good.  If I can see the mountains tomorrow and its not too windy I might try and get to Killakee in the afternoon, but I would be surprised if it is flyable, at least for me.  Great photos from last Sunday by the way - must remember my sunglasses next time!!!

South-west is generally flyable at Killakee.  The slope faces more SW than west so it should be OK.  Due south is generally the problem. Did'nt get out today myself - so hopefully be on the slope tomorrow (Sunday).  Can't make it our before 2.00ish though.

Fingers crossed for some flying at last!
