At last - back on the slope with a pandemic project - a refurbished model that is 50 years old this year.  Those of you of a certain vintage will know exactly what this model is.

Thanks you two. Makes sense to try and do it in one step not two as I was trying to do.  That's given me some ideas.  Speaking of control line tanks reminds me of a Scimitar model I made over 40 years ago - it was a lovely model but only went a few circuits before the engine cut out.  I had made the mistake of installing the fuel tank upside down and the centrifugal force quickly starved the engine of fuel!

Anyone any advice on bending brass sheet for a strut point. One right angle bend is easy in the vice, but I need to bend it a second time just 4mm away from the first bend.

There are a few of us who glide from Kilakee in the Dublin Mountains on a Saturday afternoon - wind and weather permitting. The slope is good for SW through to W and there is a NW slope at the end of the valley - we generally meet up between 2 to 2.30. The slope is beyond 5 km away so we are stood down for the next 5 weeks but once the restrictions on travel are lifted you are welcome to join us.  We are mainly members of the Island Slope Rebels club which is a national gliding club. In the meantime, post some details of your glider and if you need advice setting it up, people on this forum are very helpful and have a lot of experience.

I am keen to get back flying. Locally first. What does anyone think. Our slopes are within 20 km for me. With golf courses open and anglers back on the lakes can we resume local slope flying with social distancing during  phase 2? i.e. next week. Or do we need to wait for MACI to make a call so insurance is in place?

I would say this may not be the best place to start for a first build as it is a rather complex project and it might be easy to get disheartened.  Probably a good idea to cut your teeth on a simpler project and get some traditional building (and fixed wing flying) experience before getting stuck into this one.  I had built about 10 gliders (including some from plans only) before tackling the ASW20 and even then some bits were challenging - took me ages to get those spoilers to work. There are good electric RES glider kits out there now with useful build logs on the web to follow that would probably be an easier and more satisfying place to start.  Others may have additional advice in this regard.  I'm afraid I can't help with the power option as I just build and fly unpowered gliders.  Anway see what you think when you get the plans.

I think another consideration is widening the envelope of conditions you can fly in.  If you build a really light glider as your first model, build something that will handle windier conditions to follow. Or the other way round. That way you will be able to fly more. I am with the wing-fuselage-tail brigade! The old Middle Phase is not a bad option - I got good value out of mine but it was the rudder-elevator set-up.  The aileron version might be a good progression model.  A lot to be said for wings held on with rubber bands rather than bolted down and ready to be ripped out (I speak from experience!).

Hi Andy,
Will be gliding tomorrow at Kilakee from carpark overlooking reservoir on road to Glencree from about 2pm.  If wind more NW will be at SE end of valley.  Forecast is light so will be RES weather. Join us if you can. Nice looking glider by the way.

It's the current build! But been on the workbench too long and I keep getting distracted by those F3RES models. Not quite got the right shade of blue!
