Slope Soaring / Hlíðarvatn, Hlíðarendi and Kambar
« on: September 08, 2014, 01:54:51 AM »
Yesterday the south coast road trip was continued.

This time we started at the hills by Hlíðarvatn and started to hike up with our gliders. We stopped before we reached the top as the last part of the climb might have made for a pretty decent action flick if we'd have continued. The wind was blowing SSW with a nice and strong lift. After about 30 minutes it was time to move on so a landing was made on the hillside and then we headed down to continue our quest. There is another spot on the hill that looks like it might be easier to climb so I'll check that out on a future visit.

Take off!

Formation flight!

Looking out towards the south coast, next stop Antarctica!

Next on the list was Hlíðarendi were we saw another nice hill, that will be flown at a later date.

Then we headed to Kambar for some relaxation and flying, we had decent condtions with a SSW wind, the view is always nice here though we had some low clouds that day.

Green powered flight is the best!  ;)

Slope Soaring / Kambar, Hlíðarvatn og Krýsuvíkurbjarg

Been taking a closer look at some sites along the south coast and took couple of mates on a road trip last week. We started at Kambar before turning towards the south coast.

Hills near lake Hlíðarvatn where next on the list, nice for south wind and the hills are about 100 meters in height. As the wind had turned to blow along them we didn't ascend at this time but continued driving.

After checking few trails we arrived at Krýsuvíkurbjarg. There the road goes almost to the cliff edge that is open to the south and has a nice gras covered landing strip facing it.

All in all a good trip that turned up a few more places to look at.

Aerotow / Tungubakkar - 17.August 2014
« on: August 20, 2014, 15:51:32 PM »
Had a large scale fly-in last weekend and did some aerotowing. Conditions were very good this time and the flight this clip is from was about 17 minutes before I decided to come down, could have stayed up for ages!    :D

Only trouble with my 33% DG-800 are the narrow wings, they tend to disappear, really must get some dark colour on the underside! I lost sight of it for a few moments around 3:08, hence the wing dance.

Slope Soaring / Kambar

High pressure point east of us meant that me and couple of mates got a chance to visit a slope we use in SA wind but in a dry weather for a change. More people had gotten the idea of using the good weather and when we arrived a rather large group of people was already there with a paraglider. But after the first jump and the subsequent express elevator ride to the ground below they left for greener pastures. As we were in no hurry we decided to stick around as the forecast had promised a pickup in the windspeed. Wouldn't you know it, after not too long we were rewarded with some more wind.

So of course we threw our models into the wind and started the fun time. My wing only lasted about two mintues before a reciever failure brought it down close to car with no damge, sturdy little thing.

So we took turn flying Kate for the rest of the afternoon.

Panorama of the view.

Hope you're having a good time on the Big L!

We managed a quick outing this week so despite less than ideal conditions we got quite a few minutes in the air.

Another new recruit into the slope fun.

Great Skua had some objections to our presence but soon saw we were just hanging around.  ;)

That bend wasn't there a few milliseconds ago!

But those foamies can take it.

If that heading doesn't mess with your eyes then nothing will!

As you might make out from the title of the thread I finally got some air under my wing today!   :D
It handles well and I'm quite pleased with it!

My partners in crime.

Heavy traffic!  ;)

The original wing my mate Bjarni has, mine was tucked away on the top shelf after it finally arrived.

Scale / 1/15 Kirby Prefect, aerotow with a twist
« on: February 02, 2014, 23:49:56 PM »
We set a new a milestone in the model histoy here in Iceland tonight when we did the first indoor aerotow! Good friend of mine wanted to get back to his beginning with a little twist. He found the plans for a Keil Kraft Kirby(Slingsby) Prefect with a 24" wingspan and enlargened it to 35". He controls it with elevator and rudder and has a working release in the nose and a hook on the belly.

All in all we made five tows tonight and I've got no doubt that we'll do plenty more in the future.
I'm waiting for a video from another source but until then I'll leave you with few photos of Frimann the builder and his 35" Prefect.

Tow release in the nose.

Hook on the bottom.

Slope Soaring / Ireland visit this spring
« on: January 22, 2014, 03:06:57 AM »
Well I'm thinking about it!  :D

Kerry Annual Glide-in, 24 to 26 May, 2014
See: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2075607

As it happens I'll be heading to the mainland around that time I was thinking about a short detour with my camera to see the green hills you lot seem to have enough of!

Sooo, flying in to Dublin seems to be the best option and a rental car to the west coast.
But I was also thinking about spending couple of days doing some tourist stuff or more model stuff!

Any pointers for interesting stuff and when is the best time to bothe... visit Fred?   :?:

Slope Soaring / Fred got competition!
« on: October 29, 2013, 15:40:53 PM »
...or how I stopped hating Singapore Post and learned to love the hot wire.

Well not really but my wing seems to have taken up residency in the far east offices of Singapore Post so taking a page from the Chinese playbook we decided to use the kit my mate ordered at the same time as a template.

First up, we need a bow.

And something to heat it up.

After having searched all over the place(local foam companies not willing to sell/donate wire even after buying the foam) the internet told tales of SS wire being suitable. As I use that to safety wire fuel tubes problem was solved and wouldn't you know it, it works!

The templates supplied by the Chinese.

Marking the outlines.

Straight lines are a plus.

Voila, few cores ready for the next step.

Then what? Better lay some lines...

And on we go.

Root template in its place.

Let the cutting begin.

Cut, cut, cut.

Voila, one wing half ready, heat and repeat as much as needed.

Slope Soaring / Helgafell fun
« on: October 13, 2013, 23:26:05 PM »
Due to some low clouds and rain we couldn't go to the slope site we wanted today but as it happens the wind was right for Helgafell. We brought the K8B and Kult Quattro.

As Google came for a visit this summer I can show you the site we couldn't go to and Helgafell.

Follow the leader.

Hmmm, we only brought two models...  :o

Scale / JetPower Messe 2013 pictures
« on: October 09, 2013, 01:48:25 AM »
I'm going to cheat a bit but in my defence there are some jummy Paritech gliders there! Fred you'll find a new spot for this if needed!

Went on a road trip with good friends from Denmark last month and attended the JetPower Messe for the first time.
For those who haven't gone yet it's well worth it, stop thinking about it and just go for it!

I took one or two(or four thousand) pictures along with short videos so hopefully someone will enjoy them.
There's a break down in the description of the video with quick links if you want to view specific parts of the video at a later date.

Slope Soaring / Slopeing on the south coast in Iceland
« on: August 25, 2013, 22:53:40 PM »
Went on a road trip yesterday with couple of mates, the purpose of which was to scout new locations along the south coast. The weather could have been better, foggy and wet but we got chance in between to fly. "fjall" means mountain in Icelandic.

First stop was Reynisfjall, the US military was kind enought to make a road to the top when installing a LORAN station there around the war years. Although it has long since gone the road has been maintained by the land owners and is in good condition. Despite that you'll need a 4x4 car with decent road clearance to get to the top. If you've heard of Reynisdrangar they are besides Reynisfjall.

Next stop was Dyrhólaey, it's a tourist attraction so it also has a road leading to it and in a decent condtion and you should be able to get there in a normal road going car.

Reynisfjall has plenty of gras to land on and very nice cliffs with sturdy edges. Dyrhólaey has smaller place to land and due to the narrow size near the road not as well suited but it's landable.

Another good location we scouted is called Háfell but the wind was blowing along it so we didn't go up there. All in all a good day out with the mates and about 600 km driven.

40% K8B, 20% K8B and Kult Quattro, plus supplies and tools and three modelers.

Part of the road up on Reynisfjall and the town of Vík.

First thing we see up on the top is this "swimming pool".  ;)

Looking out towards Dyrhólaey.

Reynisdrangar from a new perspective.

Setting up the planes.

Checking the slope.

First time he flew slope though he's been with us on previous trips.

Decent view.

I think we've got a new slope enthusiast!  :)
