« on: January 26, 2007, 08:21:31 AM »
Hi there,
The weather looks good for saturday, with sun and NW winds  :D
I will be at the slope early to enjoy the day the most I can !
Note that Sunday might be a very good day too.

Just bring some winter gears as if it's like last week end, it's going to be freezing cold up there !  :!:

Scale / 1/4 scale Opel Rak
« on: January 03, 2007, 12:49:56 PM »
Hi there,

New year, new projects ! We start with my new dsign, a 1/4 scale Opel Rak. You can find lots of picture and documents here : http://www.retroplane.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=413

Sacle : 1/4
Wingspan : 2.50 mtrs
99% wood, the remaining 1% are the aluminium tubes for the tail (12 and 10 mm diameter)

Central Wing section :

Ribs lovers, this model is for you ! 5 formers, and almost 100 ribs ! I can tell you that I'm happy to have a CNC machine ! So, here are all the bits and pieces for the wing :

The building of this central piece is not that easy, mostly because everything is built "in the air" ! So, you really need a good eye for everything to be square ! The spars (4 for each wing) are made using 8x8 pine strips.

Then, well, you just have to add all the other ribs !
After nearly 2 hours, you have something like this :

Misc / CNC Machine
« on: November 29, 2006, 09:08:51 AM »
Hi there,

So, the time has come to present you my CNC machine.
Look scary at a first look, but this is really easy to build if you take care of what you are doing !
The machine is fully built using hollow steel bars (God, that's heavy !), and use a belt system for the driving. Precise to 0.01mm in theory !
Speed ? well, I can cut up to 50mm/s (can do more, but the stepper motors are not following !), but in practice, I cut balsa (any thickness) at 30mm/s and plywood at 10mm/s. You can't go back to the old fashion way after that !

And if you have any questions, don't hesitate ! :)

Road trips / First Indoor Outing.
« on: November 13, 2006, 11:46:08 AM »
Hi there,
Yesterday, with Joe, we've tried an Indoor hall in Gorey, just to see if it's suitable for indoor flying.
Some lads from the local flying club were here to see as well, and get motivated. So, something is sure, we had some good laugh !    :D

The hall is 4 badmingtons course long, and around 20 mtrs wide (Joe, is that correct ?)
The great thing, is that a pub is attached to the hall... So, we can have a Guiness contest between 2 flights !    :D

What next ? Well, some of the local guys certainly want to try indoor, and we may organize another session in December, and we will let you know of course.

Events / RETROPLANE 2007
« on: October 27, 2006, 09:22:41 AM »
Hi There,

The next Rtroplane will be held in the East of France, close to the German border, the 7th and 8th of July.

A few places for the meeting is left, so, if you want to be in the party (remember, one of the biggest Vintage scale glider meeting in Europe! ) have a quick look here : http://www.retroplane.net/retroplane2007/index-eng.htm !
Maybe, if some people are interrested, we can organize a group trip to reduce the cost of the travel. Let's say a week, from wednesday to wednesday... Let me know !

And to finish, here is a view of the slope (from the back... and taken 50mtrs from the camp site. Thanks Stephan if you read this ! )

You need more to motivate you ??

Indoor / On The Run - Model for the next Cork Indoor Session
« on: October 09, 2006, 11:09:24 AM »
Hi Guys,

Here are some pictures of the Biplan.
I've named it " On the Run".. Don't know if that sound like a good name, but that's a Pink Floyd song so..    :P

So, all that after 2 hrs of work ! Thanks to the rain on sunday !
Nothing is glued... Thanks the CAO !  :D

So, the wings shape is a rough copy of the Aito wing, the aileron layout is not great, so, I'm going to change that this week. Not a lot to do now... Just have to shape the top of the fuselage...
The building is 100% 6mm depron... I've counted 24 sqm of 6mm depron in my stock, but only 2 sqm of 3mm... The model required 2sqm of depron (ok, a bit less.. may be 1.5sqm), but finally, at the end, the weight is roughly the same as my Full EPP Toocool... So, that should be good in flight, as the biplan is 20 % bigger (with 105 cm Wing Span...)...
Big, and light !.. Can even be lighter if fully built in 3mm Depron (Joe... Want the plan ?  :D  :D )

So, I have some other projects, but this one is my Week end night project    So, should be finish next week end...

Slope Soaring / R/C gliding club in Dublin / Ireland
« on: July 27, 2006, 08:44:39 AM »
Hi there,

With Joe, we are thinking of creating a glider club. I said Dublin but that can be anywhere else, as the main objective is to have a 100% glider club (and electrics... Ok, a silent flight club so..  :D ) in Ireland.

With a club, we can organize meetings and so on... And why paying a licence + club fees in a plane club when you are not using the plane infrastructures ? (ok, only for slope soaring...)

Anyone interrested to join ? Any ideas on how to develop the.. idea ?

Think that's on page 12 or 14...

Just to have a look of course

Thanks a million,
