How to... / DIY Vacuum Forming Machine
« on: May 08, 2022, 20:04:36 PM »
Hi All,

I though I would share some photos of a home made vacuum forming machine I'm building to make a canopy for my Skylark 2.
The Skylark has been pretty much ready to fly for quite some time, it just needs a canopy.
The first few photos are of the vacuum box. The last two are for the frame that will hold the plastic.

Just wondering where do you get your epoxy laminating resin from if you use it.

Thanks,

Alan.

Club talk / New Drone Register
« on: November 09, 2015, 14:16:00 PM »
Hi all.
Just read an article in the Irish Times about the Irish aviation authority setting up a register for drones in Ireland. What caught my attention was this sentence "Every drone or remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) over one kilo in weight would be required to sign up, with the legislation also applying to model aircraft"
Does anyone know what impact this will have on us. Most of my gliders are over a one kilo in weight.

« on: June 16, 2015, 20:29:06 PM »
Hi All,
I got myself a new glider about a month back. Its a L Spatz 55 from Robbe. I got it at a 40% discount because unfortunately Robbe have gone into liquidation. It has a wingspan of 2.5m so its 1/6 Scale. I have not fully finished it yet but here are some photos of it so far.

How to... / Epoxy and Polyester Resin
« on: June 29, 2014, 15:37:30 PM »
Hi All.
Just wondering, can you use Epoxy resin to glue things into a fuselage that's made from polyester resin? Trying to get my Pat Teakle Vega ready for this aerotow next month. I think the fuselage is made from polyester so wondering if using epoxy in it is ok. I have Delux Materials Speed Epoxy 2 and it says on the box that if I want to stick things to polyester I have to use Delux materials Fusion, not speed epoxy. I don't see why I can't use the speed epoxy.

Scale / Top Rippen Scale Gliders
« on: October 23, 2012, 18:13:09 PM »
Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with scale gliders from Top Rippen, https://ssl-id.de/www.rc-tronics-topp-rippin.de/Shop . They seem to have a good collection at reasonable prices. I do realise that they are not ARTF and will require a good bit of work to build them. I have my eye on the 3m Discus.

PSS / A4 Skyhawk
« on: March 01, 2012, 19:42:31 PM »
With the help of John Pearson, a great big parcel awaited me when I came home from work today. In it, a lovely A4 Skyhawk, my first PSS model. Thanks very much for pointing me in the right direction John.
It looks like a great kit. It has everything bar the servos, Rx and battery. Here are some pics.

I sincerely doubt i'll have it ready for the PSS fly in. But I will make a start.

Misceleanous / Delta Peak setting for NiMh batteries
« on: January 08, 2012, 12:22:33 PM »
Does anyone know what's the best Delta Peak setting for charging NiMh batteries. It says in the manual for my new cockpit SX that the delta peak should be set to 5mV/cell. I tried that setting to charge my other NiMh batteries and they don't seem to be getting fully charged. At least I don't think so, I will have to investigate it more. The default setting on the charger was 15mV/ cell. That setting seemed to be fine for some of my batteries, but it over charged my cockpit SX. What does everyone else think?

Radios / Telemetry Transmitters
« on: November 07, 2011, 15:12:13 PM »
Hi all,
What's the difference between a telemetry enabled transmitter and a full telemetry transmitter. I know the full telemetry is probably better, but why? The transmitters I'm referring to are multiplex by the way.

Slope Soaring / Real Slope Soaring
« on: March 17, 2011, 16:05:51 PM »
Hi Guys.
I thought I'd show you a movie I made of full size gliders slope soaring in Germany. I filmed it in March 2010 when I was visiting relatives. The hill is called Amoneburg which is near where my relatives live. The glider club is beside the hill.

Scale / Slingsby Skylark 2
« on: October 20, 2010, 17:56:24 PM »
Hi All,

Since Bill and John are starting new builds I though I'd start mine as well.
The Plan is to build a Slingsby Skylark 2 to 1/5 Scale. Its from the Traplet plan. It will be smaller than my K8 so should be easier to transport and launch. The pic below shows what a Skylark 2 looks like.

Here's some pic's of what I've done so far.

Radios / Just Converted to 2.4GHz
« on: September 18, 2010, 10:09:00 AM »
Hi All,
Just converted my Multiplex Cockpit MM Transmitter to 2.4GHz. I converted it using the Multiplex HFMx M-LINK Module. Apparently you can convert almost any Multiplex transmitter to 2.4Ghz with this module. It also came with a 5Ch receiver. All I need to do now is test it at the slope.
Here are some photos. Sorry if they look a bit out of focus, my camera phone is not very good in bad light conditions.

Here's some of what comes in the box

The module and receiver

Here is the module attached to the back of the transmitter. It connects to the transmitter via the Trainer/charge socket.

How to... / Fiberglass Repair
« on: April 13, 2010, 15:50:21 PM »
Hi all.

I just wanted peoples views on how to repair a fiberglass fuselage. My DHLG fuselage to be more exact. I was trying to fly it over the weekend and it had a bit of a hard landing. The wing seat is cracked in multiple places. See the picture below.
It should be noted that some of the cracks were already there from a previous bad landing and I repaired them by putting some carbon fiber reinforcement inside the fuselage. But now even those cracks are even bigger. I can't put any more reinforcement inside the fuselage. It's just to awkward. Putting in the previous carbon reinforcement was difficult enough.
What do you think I should do?
