Misceleanous / Newcastle Air show 2011
« on: August 07, 2011, 01:31:29 AM »
Hi all

Went down to Newcastle today, for the local airshow, and I must say that it was very good. The number of aircraft taking part was small compared with other airshows, however, the display line was very close to the crowd line and I was able to get some low pass shots. Also the time slots between the displays where very short, therefore the showline was busy all afternoon.

Here are a few photos :

PSS / Big F14 Tomcat PSS project
« on: June 06, 2011, 23:07:22 PM »
This is a new PSS project for 2011, which I hope will be ready for next year’s flying season. It is a very large F14 Tomcat made from blue foam, with a swing wing system which extends to just over 2m wing span. The model came from a free plan of a small electric prop jet, which was blown up on the photo copier by approx 200%. My f14 is the second one to be produced, the first was made by Ian Robb of the Langford model club and was made from polystyrene and flew off a dolly with a large electric motor and a pusher prop. Ian’s  f14 flew very well and looked great in the air, however, you needed a big runway to get the model off the ground when using the dolly.  I had intended to make my example an electric pusher jet as well, however, over the last few years I have got into PSS flying, so the big  f14 will be converted to a power slope soaring model.
I have worked on the model on and off over the last year or so, and thanks to Ian for making the swing wing section and the elevator control system, both work great and should perform well in the air. One of the problems that I had with working with blue foam was the amount of dust when using the sander in the workshop, which give me health problems, even with a mask on, however with warmer and longer evenings, I can now work outside where the dust can blow away better.
So back to the model, The f14 will be a semi scale jet, made from,  blue foam and glassed all over. The wings , will have a variable sweep system and flight controls will include elevators and ailerons, may add rudders later if required.

This is the F14 example that I have got decals for:

F-14B Tomcat VF-103 Jolly Rogers

Photo of the first f14 pusher prototype in action (build by Ian Robb)

This how the f14 looks so far:

Wings sweep back

Wings in the forward position.

Two 25kg digi servos to operate the wing sweep system, which works very well!

I will keep you all updated as the model takes shape, not looking forward to all that sanding again!! :(

Scale / MDM 3m Fox
« on: March 22, 2011, 22:41:56 PM »
Well I have done it again, yes, purchased another glider because, it was a wee bargain. I got the Fly fly Fox 3m, from Slough RC models for £160, normally £230 in most model shops, also they only charged me £6.50 for p&p and two day delivery.

On inspection the kit looks good, well packed and a good finish, the build should be quick as with most of the flyfly range. Here are a few spec:

Specification
Wingspan: 3000mm (118.11")
Length: 1520mm (59.84")
Weight: 1700 - 1900g
Servos: 5x 9g, 1x Standard
Radio System: 4 - 5 Ch. (Req.)
Wing Section: Eppler 205

I will keep you all updated with the build and test flights.

PSS / GWS Skyhawk
« on: November 24, 2010, 23:19:38 PM »
Hi All

Another model for 2011 season, the gws skyhawk, a foam ducted fan model which could make a very nice little PSS jet for the slope, or you can fit a fan unit and fly it of the flat. I have two projects already on the go, however I could not resist this little jet at the price! £29.00 + postage from BRC hobbies. I always liked the skyhawk and this model is a good size with lots of detail and extras in the box. I have the F15 ducted fan model and Fred flys the F15 PSS version, both models fly very well and I think great value for the Euro!.

The model is a very quick build kit. as the photos below show ( 3hrs work) and the jet is ready to paint.

I will use common household water based paint and seal it with flair sealer satin finish.

I will keep you posted how she flys.

PSS / Martin baker B57D Build
« on: October 19, 2010, 22:09:55 PM »
Hi All

Well it's time to get building for next season, and after looking at a few designs over this year's flying season, i have decided to go with a B57D. This is the USA upgrade of the British Canberra, used as a sky plane by the US airforce in the 50's

The wing span is 106" and it is balsa fuselage and foam wings. I have started building and will post a few pics of the progress so far soon!

Misceleanous / Glider bags
« on: September 29, 2010, 23:24:02 PM »
Hi Guys

At B&Q Newry, you can get a 7.5m, 4mm, 600mm roll of Aluminium Thermal foil for £11.50 in their sale. I made a wing bag for my vector with a little side bag for the elevators. I used fibre tape to stick the sides together, and velcro tabs for the flaps. The bag in the photo took about 30mins to make, and I still have about 5m left for a fuslage bag and another wing bag set.

Simple, and best of all cheap!! :D  :D

Jets / SR71 Blackbird first public show Duxford 2010
« on: July 27, 2010, 22:54:55 PM »
Hi all

Just back from the LMA show at Duxford held over the weekend. Ian robb rolled out his new SR71 Blackbird turbine jet and taxied the model along the runway in front of the large crowd. The model is not allowed to fly until the test flights are completed and a CAA cert approved, which hopefully will be within the next few weeks. Ian and the team were kept very busy answering questions on the model and even met two US Air force staff who worked on the real SR71 which the model was based on.

Here are a few photos from the weekend :

Slope Soaring / X-Treme build
« on: March 25, 2010, 23:19:28 PM »
Hi guys

Just purchased a new model from Puffin Models (www.puffinmodels.com) called the X-Treme, a so called slope hot liner. I will keep you up to date on this build over the next week, so to get started, here are some details on the model:

The X-Treme has a lightweight epoxy glass fuselage, foam wing skinned in wood veneer bonded with epoxy, and balsa tailplane finished in polyester Oracover. The wingspan is 2.3m and uses the RG15 wing section. The two piece wing has both the ailerons and flaps ready hinged. The tail uses an all moving cruciform tailplane, unlike other hotliners. The X-Treme has a functional rudder allowing true stall turns to be performed, along with other manoeuvres that require the use of rudder.

On opening the box, the model was very well packaged, with the small parts taped to the box sides (good idea). The quality of the kit was very good, with a good finished fuselage with carbon strips on the high stress areas, also a great set of wings with a fantastic finish. Here are a few photos of the model:

All the parts that come with the kit (ARTF kit)

Closeup of the fuselage

I think this could be a quick build, opened tonight ready for Sunday  :?:  :?:

Jets / Flying at langford
« on: February 13, 2010, 22:27:19 PM »
Hi Guys

Well what a fantastic day, low wind and sunshine, perfect for getting the dust cleaned of the jets and onto the runway. A few of us did just that, except me of course, my jet is still on the work brench, however Ian and Peter fired up the turbines and burned up some sky at my local club. Both pilots are getting the jets ready for the up coming NIAA scale championships later in the season.

Here are a few photos from  today...
