PSS / Mig 29
« on: August 07, 2009, 00:51:50 AM »
Hi Bill

Thanks for the input, I think the controls surfaces do need to be increased, however the elevators are very big and she was still very poor in pitch. This model was designed for speed, therefore may be if we fly it in a stronger wind with a greater wing loading this may help with the control response. What about the large air intakes, would these cause alot of drag even with the air able to pass freely down the intakes, what do you think??

PSS / MIG 29

Hi All
Just flew my Mig 29 last night of the slopes at Moneymore mountains. The model is an EDF jet from the Fly Fly Hobbies range, all foam, very light and pre painted. The model is designed for two 90mm fan units, however I decided to give it a try on the slopes to see how it would handle as a PSS.
I give the model a few throws of the lower slope where we fly, with a wind blowing approx. 15mph. The lift at this spot was fair and the model flew well close to the hill, but dropped badly further out form the slope, (a long walk to the bottom of the slope).
Richard (my co-pilot and super photographer) and I, drove up onto the highest point of the second slope to see if we could get better lift. This spot is very rocky behind the slope compared with the lower slope, however we decided to give it a try, so a good throw and the Mig was away. This time the lift was better as we had hoped and the model climbed away nicely, however in the turns the Mig lost a lot of high and was very hard to control in the down wind leg. The second flight, again started of well with a good climb out away from the slope, however, again the model would not turn well and as it got further out from the slope, the climb rate was very poor and I could not get her back. ( another walk down the slope).

Overall the performance was fair, however I am not sure what the problems are, or how to solve them.

Could it be the wing section, the large open air intakes, control surfaces to small, no rubbers, mybe you guys could give me a few ideas to try before the next test flights.

Here are a few photos of the Mig 29 in action

Hi Fred

Thanks for the plan offer, I can get it printed if you can send me the file, john@netstretch.com, one of my clients runs a copy shop and can print very large plans at a good price.

I think I may have a photo of the glider I fancy, which I took at retroplane, yes I have, it's the glider sitting on the ground in the following
photo

Maybe Bill you can name this glider.

Hi Bill, up late tonight

I got the links you sent me thanks, some great plans. I like some of the vintage gliders that the German guys flew at retroplane, I was very impressed with the speed range of these gliders, after all Bill, you know if it's fast, I like it.

Jets / Calling all jet fans in Ireland
« on: July 31, 2009, 00:27:21 AM »
Hi all

This part of the forum, has no posts, come on !!! jet jockeys, lets start talking and get a few topics going. What or how do we start? well lets just start by telling everybody about yourself and the types of jet flying your involved in, turbine, EDF, prop, if it's a jet lets hear about it.

So,  name John Pearson I fly all types of jets EDF, Prop and started into turbines this year. I am part of NI Jets, a group of jet jockeys based in the north of Ireland, however we fly with the southern jets guys and also with the JMA in England. I am the web master for www.nijets.com. a website for jet fans in Ireland. I had a bad start to my turbine flying, with a loss of my first jet, a turbine powered hawk with a jetcat 120 on board, however I saved the pennys and am back in action with a new jet. I have flew many edf jets, large and small, and I have a nice cermark F16 prop jet which I fly for fun at our local club field, ( the runway is a little short for turbines).

Here's a photo of my hawk on it's maiden and last flight.

O.K. then that's a quick intro!! to get the ball rolling, who's next

Happy landings

Hi all
A little busy at work, so I have not been on the forum. retroplane was fantastic, so good, I have started looking for a vintage plane plan already, hopefully to fly in next years competition. I have some pics on my picasa albums, feel free to use any.
Bill I was out on the slopes this evening flying the DL 50, winds less than 6mph, lift poor, however this little glider flew great, a real test and good craic to keep the glider in the air. looking forward to Sept. slope event at Mount Leinster, my have a few more from the north coming down also.

Hi all

Here are a few pics from Retroplane 2009, taken over the weekend. A part from the weather, it was a great event, with many fantastic scale models on show, well done to Fred, Joe and all those involved in organising the event.

PSS / B52
« on: July 03, 2009, 22:56:14 PM »
Hi Keith, the engine pylons could be a problem on the big B52 model. The landing sites where we fly, are not to bad, mostly flat with long grass. With the test model, I just spot glued the engines on, so that they would break off easy on a rough landing and it worked well in practice. as for the big B52 with the weight and size, a better system needs to be used, therefore, I checked with the PSS u.k. and found a good system used by Simon crocker on his large B52 PSS build around the late eights. The small diagram below shows how the engines slip off on landing, hopefully with little damage on simons model, I will use the same method on my B52.

Any ideas would be welcome on this subject Keith!!

Thanks Fred and Joe, for the warm welcome, as promised her is some details on the B52 project. The original concept came from a plan published by RM Greenwood many years ago. I build the test model from this plan, all balsa. The test flights took place at the bowl in the Antrim hills N.I. with Bill Scott from NIMSA, providing the strong right arm and encouragement to fly the dam thing, quote Bill " on the count of three 'three go!!. The test model few very well and very scale like, no nasty surprises very smooth. AUW 6 1/2 pounds wing span 78" standard RC gear.

Here are some pics of the test model in flight:

The Big B52 idea came from Ian Robb, a member of the langfordmodel avaition club and builder of some fantastic large models, quote " hi John would'n a Big B52 look great, after all size matters in the model world, here's a video of cain's B52 from the USA"get building.

The model is all foam, 'pink styro foam' wing span approx 16ft, fuselage 11ft, my target AUW weight when finish is approx 30 pounds. The model will be finish in glass cloth.
Well that's it for now

Hi guys, I am a new member to this forum, so therefore I would like to share a little info on the B52 build, which I started a few mouths ago and is on going. I have posted a pic of the model at present, I will update this forum with more info of the build as it progresses and how I got talked into this mad project soon!!

Going to Retro glide with Bill Scott of NIMSA, so hopefully I will get a chance to meet some of you on the slopes for a chat, and some great flying.

Cheers for now
