Title: A Chilly day with little to show for it
Post by: Happy Days on January 23, 2011, 16:43:42 PM
Jo & I went up to Big L today. The weather was supposed to have been 20+Km/h winds and clear skies, turned out to be neither.
The wind was very light to almost still and we spent hours waiting for the low cloud to clear, only to have more low cloud come in after a few minutes.

We managed to get a bit of flying in however.

First up Joe flew his Luna and I threw my Whisper into the air. The lift seemed reasonably constant for a while. Then, suddenly , it disappeared. Neither plane was high enough to make a proper landing on a flat area and had to make emergency landings part way down the slope.

This is what mine looked like when I found it. Obviously it had gone nose in leaving the nose cone still stuck in the ground!

The cloud came in immediately afterwards so we retreated to the car part for tea and to complain about the poor conditions.

An hour later the cloud partly cleared. Feeling exceptionally brave Joe assembled his new 3mtr ’beast’ and we ascended to the top of the north slope once again.

There was hardly any more lift than before, but this beauty just kept climbing.
Some times the lift would go and Joe got very close to stalling at some points!

But overall he managed to keep her in the air. Even making some aerobatics from time to time. (http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Happy%20Days/Low%20over%20the%20clouds.jpg)

Unfortunately the screen on my camera kept misting up if I bought it too close to my face, and if I held it too far away I couldn’t see what it was taking, so I don’t have any picies of the close in rolls that it was doing.

We packed up around 1o/c with the intention of returning next week, in better conditions. I HOPE!

Keith

Yes, rumours of Joe’s demise have been greatly exaggerated!

He’s just texted me to say that his new plane called a Race M.. It’s a nice bird 8)

Dame. I just missed you guys. I was there at around 2pm. The wind was not much better when I was there. But it looked like it was picking up as I was leaving.
I was talking to one of the Paraglider guys who was there. He said they have set up a weather station just two weeks ago on a near by mountain, Croaghaun I think it's called. It has a web cam pointed at Mt Leinster and everything. Here is the link to it
http://www.ihpa.ie/index.php/weather-all-in-one/246
The information is updated every 10min and the web cam picture is updated every 20min.
I will post some pictures later.

OK here are some pics.

The mountain in the background here is where the weather station is, I think. (this was from the north slope).

Hi Alan,

Yea, we left about an hour before you. Did you manage to get any flying in?

The Paraglider’s website is very good, all the info anyone intending to fly at Big L would need, and a picture as well. :D
Well done for getting that info and site address!

Race M is a rare bird too. Not to many of them about, but a great machine in the right hands.

Maybe Joe should enter the Kerry F3f :?:

Thanks Keith.
Unfortunatly I did not fly anything. There did not appear to me much wind down at the car park. But when I took a walk up to the north slope there was a good breeze there. Unfortunatly I forgot to bring a glider with me up the slope     . I couldn't stay very long when I was there so there not enough time to go down to the car, get the glider and go back up again. Ah well next time, which hopefully won't be to long.
