a few photos of the ka-3 i'm building from one of fred's 1/4 scale short kits. i've taken the fuse frame off it since i took the photos and it's nearly ready for covering. a very nice build, relatively easy for someone thinking of building a vintage model for the first time and it won't break the bank! nice one fred.

Nice work Gerry. You're way ahead of me on mine and I've been building for about 2 years!
-
thanks bill. i'm trying to make myself stick to one project at a time until it's finished. not easy when there are so many models in my head to be built. i'm already thinking of what's next on the list. are you going to finish yours soon? have you much left to do? 'twould be nice to see a few v-tails on the slope next year and it's not that far off you know!
-
Beautiful work Gerry  !
(I don't suppose you really meant to post in the "for sale" section, did you?)
-
spot on chris. yea, i opened a 'new topic' without looking where i was in the forum. i think i'm better at gluing balsa and ply than finding my way around these web sites. now then, maybe its all the glue is the problem........
-
i opened a 'new topic' without looking where i was in the forum.
Does that mean it is not for sale Gerry :D :D
Nice work. Looks great.
-
  so you're not selling it gerry
hope not because it's beautiful don't know what it is about a model glider in the flesh it just look's good
seen joe's earlier this year at big L and it flew a dream :D
come on bill you're nearly takin as long as me to build the k13
-
   alan beat me to it
-
sorry about that alan. looks like i through a right wobbly there  . no, it's definitely not for sale. all i need now is keith on my case going on about information accuracy or some such head wrecking stuff. :!: :!:
-
Sorry lads, quick message here. My father in law passed away this morning :( so I'm in the midlands to take care of some family stuff. I'll move this topic to scale section when I connect to the web.
-
Fred, I’m sorry to hear of your bereavement. I’d like to offer my condolences to you and your wife on your loss.
Such events bring into focus the really important matters of life, don’t they.
Keith
-
Yes, I wish also to offer my condolences to you Fred, and your good wife for her sad loss.
John
-
Gerry great model, looks fantastic, was a little confused when I seen it in the 'for sale section'
-
thanks john.
fred, you've far more important things to be concerned with at the moment. this is very much a minor detail, don't be concerned about it. again condolences to you and rachel.
-
sorry about that alan. looks like i through a right wobbly there  . no, it's definitely not for sale.
Ger, if you ‘Through a Right Wobbly,’ then, presumably, you must have travelled within a “Right Wobbly” and thereby passed through it. (A highly improbable event, I suggest, given the diameter of your waist.)
What I assume you meant by your expression, was that you imparted (or induced) a sufficient amount of energy to a “Right Wobbly” causing it to gain momentum and thereby travel upon a trajectory. ( i.e. you ‘Threw a right wobbly‘.) However this too is an improbable event, in my view, due to the fact that Right Wobblies are merely abject terms of expression and do not posses any material form or matter to which energy could be imparted.
Given the above facts I can only suggest that in future you decease from referring to Right Wobblies and stick, (if you’ll pardon the pun) to building planes!
And before you call me a “Stupid English prick,” I would point out that such a statement would also be incorrect.
I am, in fact, an “Old stupid English pick.” And proud of it!
Now, what was this topic about………… :?:
Keith
-
thanks sheldon!!! i'll have to read that again tomorrow when my head is clearer. (thinks) god, i hope he doesn't find fault with anything there, this could go on forever and ever and eve.........
-
Condolences Fred and don't worry about what's going on here for a while. Family comes first
-
Beautiful work Gerry  !
(I don't suppose you really meant to post in the "for sale" section, did you?)
No, he just wanted to post in the "for sCale" section
Great building, has your pilot been bought at AH Design's?
@Fred: toutes mes condoléances, on pense bien à toi et à ta petite famille...*
@Gerryb: Thanks for nothing... "I told you... My mother brought me to pass tests, I'm not crazy" :D :D :D
Mat
-
hi mat, thanks for compliments on ka-3.
yea, i bought pilot from ah designs. i asked for a sweater with the doppler effect on display but apparently it had been taken by someone on this very forum. imagine that!!
i hope to cover ka-3 this week, ready to fly soon
-
What did you think of the AH Design pilot Gerry? I bought one for my KA-3 and I thought the legs were a bit out of proportion: too long?
-
Condolences Fred. Please give my condolences to your wife.
Bill I agree with you about the pilots. I have two pilots from AH Design. One 1/4 scale the other 1/5 scale. The legs on both seem to be two long. In fact I'm going to have to shorten the legs on the 1/5 scale pilot because it won't fit in my skylarch 2.
-
It's a bit unusual, because there is a formula that uses a ratio between , (I thinK) shoulder to elbow which gives you a leg length.
-
just spent a bit of time measuring the pilot in my ka-3 (what else would you be doing at 11.30 on a sunday night...must get a life!!). length of head/neck is 3"; body is 4 1/4"; legs are 9 1/2". total 16 3/4".
if you multiply each measurement by a scale factor of 4, you get length of head 12"; body 17"; legs 38".
at 1/4 scale, i figure this gives us a full size pilot of 67" or 5' 7". not a very tall pilot you'll agree but the proportion of body to legs doesn't seem right.
i think the problem is not with the legs but with the body. i think it should be about 1" to 1 1/2" longer to be in better proportion to the legs. some time, when you have nothing better to do, take your own measurements and see what you think.
just make sure nobody is watching!!
-
I could say I was training to be a tailor!!
-
Thank you all for your kind words, much appreciated.
(to stay on this topic, I replied to a few texts also, but my colleagues told me this morning they never received them! I have a new phone for a few weeks now, so that might be since day one! If I never replied to a text etc, please accept my apologies! Vodafone is having a look at that now! :!: :!: )
Anyway, as usual, great work from Ger!  Your Ka3 is really looking good!
What colours are you going to do yours? (if you already know)
-
thanks fred. i decided from the start that i would build a typical ka-3 rather than a specific one. so i put parts of different '3s for scale effect.
i'm going to use the same scheme you used for your 1/4 sc model except in light blue and yellow solartex.
i'm cutting parts at the moment, so hopefully i'll be finished covering by the weekend.
-
Very nice build, Here in America very few people build anymore and even fewer, scale sailplanes! Kudos to you and I am going to order a short kit from Fred! Keep up the great work, Joser
-
Hi Joser,
Welcome to the forum! :D
Strangely enough, considering the number of modellers in the US, I think you are right!
You have some very very good builder, like Fred China, but most reports from scale events only shows RTF glider (off the shelves), very few hand made / built up glider. But that seems to be the way the hobby is going to these days I guess. The technicality of the hobby is pushed backward more and more, but who is to blame? Modellers or manufacturers?
Ok, end of the OT rant, sorry Ger!
-
thanks joser and welcome to the forum. lots of building going on here and more to come.
re arf's, i find i go through stages, sometimes lots of building, then something arf takes my fancy, then enough of that, back to the building.
i think arf has its place, especially if you want to get into flying quickly. i'm sure lots of guys who would never have got into models did so because arf's were so readily available. once you're comfortable flying with a couple of models under your belt, then it's time to consider building your own. with a bit of practice on easy-build models who's to say what you might take on as a project, even a ka-3!! (me climbing down off speech box).
are you going to show us some of your work joser? please do, we'd love to see it.

finally got out for 1st glider flight of 2012. went to tountinna today for a couple of hours and flew my new ka-3. it flew beautifully javascript:emoticon(':D') wind was nw, about 8 to 10 kts, some low cloud and a very enjoyable outing was had by me!!! some photos as promised.
colour scheme is not scale, but the blue and yellow show up very nicely against the sky. thanks again fred

Looks really nice Gerry. I really need to get my finger out and finish mine too.
Too many projects, not enough time :( (or money!)
-

well done gerry that's beautiful, hope to see it fly this year at big L
-
not taking anything away from your model gerry
i found this on the scalesoaring forum
www.scalesoaring.co.uk/yabb/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1303335384/45
this is an amazing piece of building
-
thanks for compliments lads.
andy, yea, i've seen that one, very nice work. that's one of fred's too, at 1/3 scale. bigger model, easier to add more scale detail (check out the framework through the canopy).
i've also been following the all tube version by olli on retroplane. amazing build altogether, even down to scale control runs for the 'ruddevators' or v-tail, which ever you want to call them!!
there really are some good builders out there, lots to learn from them.
-
elevuders :D
-
Nice job Gerry :D :D . Can't wait to see it in person.
-
Hey Gerry,
Very good job on the Ka3
Original colour scheme, like the blue and yellow!
I hope you like now, and that you will have lots of flying with it :D
-
thanks again guys, looking forward to some more visits to our piece of heaven soon.
brian, are they not the main controls on a flying cow?
-
I think the standard of contributions of this forum is definitely going down hill :!:
Yesterday Andy was trying to fly a set of banisters, and now Gerry’s talking about flying cows!!!
I'm not sure I should belong to this forum any more. :?:
(In fact, I wouldn’t want to belong to any forum that would have me as a member! )
K.

ladies and gentlemen of the gliding fraternity, please give a warm welcome to the 'new kid on the block' (the glider, that is, kieran has been around for years!!).
kieran wallace with his newly completed ka-3 from a certain mr. marie's kit.
model turned out very nice in the evening light on tountinna, facing east. unfortunately, not enough wind for a test flight, but hopefully next saturday we'll see it fly.

doesn't that grin say it all!!!
-
:?: That's not a Ka3, it's a Tutor! :P
Congratulations to Kieran for this nice build! Really looks good!
And if it flies half as good as yours, I think we will have a happy camper!
Keep us updated on the first flight :D

Enjoy ^^
-
Nice :D
That was at the wedding? :D
-
Yes :D
-
Gerry,
Did you use pushrods, snakes or closed loop to operate the tail surfaces on the V tail?
Anybody know what the real thing used?
-
Hi Bill,
The real one used Push / pull system
(http://www.retroplane.net/forum/images/uploads/Johannes/Ka31_737.jpg)
-
hi bill,
i used blue/yellow sullivan snakes, stiffer than red/yellow but still easy to go round curves.
