Combat / Sniper Test Flown
« on: July 17, 2009, 15:10:20 PM »
Sounds good Kieth, Would love to get over in the next couple of weeks.

It is not so much a fast plane. But it is incredibly responsive and has a real point and go feel to the flying. The short coupled tail on it gives it a few funny quirks. It flys much like a 3D fun fly model. It was designed for 2 channel control but I added the extra servo and gave it rudder control aswell. And It does the sweetest stall turn. Not bad for a crappy piece of pink foam worth about 20 bucks.

Seriously though I doubt it has the metal to survive in combat for very long. That nose is very narrow. and all the push rods are long and fully exposed. It will be no time before one of them is ripped off. But who cares Eh? It will be fun while the fight lasts... :D

Hope to see you at Mt L Wed 2 weeks weather permitting

So the P51 Mustangs days are nearly over, Last night on tounn tinne the Sniper took to the air. Flew well. Very agile. Made me wish there was a target nearby. It still needs a coat of paint and I will post a pic here as soon as I off load them from my phone.

But Yes!!! it is time to die all you feeble infidels of the east... ha ha hah haaaaa

Cheers Joe. It is hard enough stuff to come by.

Kieth, not sure when I can get to Mt L next. My weekends are busy with work. I do most of my flying mid week. I need to hook up with a few lads that can get free in the mid week for some flying. I would have no prob driving over maybe once a month.

Combat / Coloured Packing Tape
« on: July 01, 2009, 14:16:40 PM »
Cool. thanks!

The sniper has been stripped down and I have added a carbon rod as a wing spar. I fibre glassed the nose, as it is very thin here as will more than likely get crunched to bits on the first fight. Then I coated the airframe in a copydex/water solution and when that was dry I covered the model in the re-inforced tape. The whole thing came out pretty strong. Not sure if it will kill a mustang but It should be a lot of fun trying... :D

I think I will go with the paint option.

Cheers

Fred I see you painted your mustang, can I paint onto the filament tape?

Noel Barrett in Cork keeps a stock of Balsa. Look up Barrets models on washington St Cork. Not sure about any other place. I usually buy it online. Tower hobbies or Balsa Cabin. Been years since I bought wood though.

best of luck

Combat / Sniper on your tail
« on: June 17, 2009, 11:46:40 AM »
Joe, Not sure what it is made of. It is definitely not the white polystyrene stuff. It is a pink foam. and looks to be quite a dense material. Is this EPP?? I don't know. No experience with foamies.

I assembled this about 8 years ago but after looking closely at the combat wings and freds heavily re-inforced juggernaut mustang I think JK Aerotech designed this in the early days of slope combat. Some modern upgrades will have to be made.

To that end I have ordered a 4mm carbon tube to act as a full length wing spar. Also some fibreglass re-inforcement on the nose and wing leading edge is definitely in order. The ailerons are just foam covered in packing tape. Will replace this with the plastic depron stuff that the V tail is made from. It should be pretty strong. Never flown it so I have no idea how it will perform. But who cares anyway I just want to smash into fred.... :P

I might fit a bun drop mechanism just to drop cream bomb buns on Kieths head....

This is the Sniper from JK Aerotech. I have had it for about 8 years, and never put the radio gear in. After last saturdays combat I am gonna fix it up and blast that feckin Mustang out of the sky...
And for back up. We took drawings off it this evening and Ger Buckley will be cutting out 2 more for himself and his son Declan. Then we will gang up on you lads in the East. World War III will commence.
Better get some serious practice in.... :?:

Be afraid....be very afraid.

To quote donkey from Shrek

I like big Buns and I can not Lie....

To quote homer

hmmmmmmmmmmm buns... :)

To quote shakespear

To bun or not to bun that is the question?  :P

To quote Darwin

Buns were not just created. But the evolution of buns can be traced back to the cupcake and there is fossil evidence to show the existence of cake crumbs as far back as the cretacious period. (taken from the origin of buns)  :?:

Jees I would kill for a bun about now....

Fred, Ger and Myself will be there about 9am.

For anybody needing directions to the slope. Here goes.

1. Call me or Gerry if completely lost. Dave 086 8218746 Ger 086 3497493.

2. From the Main N7 Limerick to Dublin turn at the village of Bird hill. If travelling from the dublin direction you need to turn right at the main roundabout outside Birdhill. Signposted for Ballina/Kilalloo. If Travelling from the Limerick Direction you need to drive through Birdhill to the dublin side. Then turn left at the main roundabout for Ballina.

3. In Ballina you will have plenty space to park up and meet.

4. Head North through the village until you meet a tiny roundabout outside the Grocery store. Continue straight ahead at this roundabout.

5. You will then take the first right turn. You will know you are on the right path at this stage as the road takes a sudden uphill direction.

6. So the basic rule is KEEP RIGHT from now on. the next right turn is just opposite a small house on your left. He always has a boat parked there. There is a sign saying Graves of the Leinstermen straight ahead. Just turn right.

7. The road takes a downhill direction now to a very small bridge. Continue straight on.

8. Continue after the small bridge for about a mile or so. You will be doing some pretty decent uphill climbing now. The Next right turn is almost at the top. By now it will be very obvious that you need to turn right to get to the top of the hill. This turn is a very sharp and steep. It is almost a U turn in a 35degree uphill direction. 1st gear job!

9. Drive straight to the top. Car park at the top beside the transmission tower.

10. If lost refer to step 1.

See you there.

Pity things did not work out this weekend. We took a chance and went up to tounntine today. We got over an hours flying but had to duck some heavy showers. Otherwise it worked out ok. Hopefully we will make it over in a couple of weeks.

The wind was shifting from S to SE so we were flying electric gliders over the small lake at the top. There is a bowl shape here which generates lift for lighter models. Not the most ideal slope but  any port in a storm eh?

Hope you did not buy the coffee table version and then realise that you should have bought this one...
