Radios / RX batteries...

Hi Aidan,

True ! I went directly from Nimh to lipos, but never went the LSD route for my TX, I think mainly because soldering 6 or 8 cells end to end, is a bit of a challenge for me (and also the known issues with the Evo to blow up the HF when doing "fast" charging!).
For my RX, I found that much easier to do.

For the Evo, there is very little space! If interrested, I think I still have the 2 nimh packs I had, one relatively new for the Evo   :D  Just need the plug at the end (cut it from your dead pack).

Yeah, I haven't tried soldering end to end yet but how tricky can it be  :?:
I do have a hammerhead soldering tip I got years ago but never used so that should give me a reasonable chance at success. I'll practice on some old cells and see how it goes. As long as I can keep it to no more than a couple of seconds contact the cells should be okay.

Thanks for the offer of your packs but I presume they're 4 or 5 cells per pack and I'd rather not combine cells of different ages and histories. Do you know if Aldi routinely have these or if it's likely to be a hunt? I'll drop in to the local one tomorrow and take a look.

Hi Aidan,

You can go for the Low self discharge ones, will work great, but as Nando said, why not Lipos ?
Converted my Evo a year or 2 ago, and will never go back to Nimh for TX ! (all my radios are Lipos now).
2S lipo, no diode, and charge the battery.. Once every 4 to 6 months in my case for the evo  :D  And that's intensive use!
Flew everyday in Britany for 2 weeks last month, the reading on the charge only lost 0.4v  :D  Bringing it in Germany tomorrow, still haven't charged it.

I have photos if you are interrested, but really no tricks, really easy to change over  :D

Otherwise, I can bring you a few "Carrefour" ones, I think there is a Carrefour in Cherbourg  :D

I don't see a major advantage in lipos for the transmitter. I had thought about it but If I was going with lipos I'd probably use cells between about 2000mAh and 2500mAh anyway so I'm not gaining much in capacity. Self discharge would have been the main incentive for me to use lipos but the LSD NiMH cells seem to cover that angle pretty well.
I sometimes leave a glider and transmitter in the car just in case of good weather on the way home from work. I'd be happier with NiMH sitting in a hot car than lipo. I know the risk is tiny but without a convincing advantage for lipo I'd err on the side of caution and simplicity and use Eneloops or these other LSD NiMH cells.

Is there something else that I'm missing?

Aidan

P.S. Perhaps I could use a small space saving - I'm trying to fit in both the Jeti module and EVO 35MHz module with a switch and there's not much extra space in a Royal EVO!

To conclude (for me) the subject on  RX batteries, finally found some numbers to concure with what I see for the past 2 years now !

My 5 euros packs are even slightly better than the Eneloop it seems (see the charts/graphs down the page)  :D

I'll try to re-stock those cells next week  :D

Hi Fred

I just got a second hand Multiplex Royal EVO that I'm converting to Jeti Duplex. It arrived with a dead TX battery. I was debating whether to replace it with another standard Multiplex NiMH pack or solder up an Eneloop pack for it. I think I'll drop into Aldi and see if I can get a few of these to make up a pack. Low self discharge, slightly better capacity and cheaper!
Did you solder yours - any problems or do you remember?

Yep, I thoroughly enjoyed Saturday too!

I think I have a photo of the 10 gliders up at once. I'll have a look.

Longer term, probably next winter, I will send my Tx back to Multiplex for an upgrade to 2.4 MHz.

If you're interested in moving to 2.4GHz but would prefer not to be without your transmitter while it's upgraded you might consider the Jeti Duplex system. It's a similar system to M-Link but you can easily convert the transmitter yourself. Also the Jeti receivers are cheaper (at least the telemetry capable ones are). The Jeti TMe module is made specifically for the Multiplex EVO providing you don't upgrade the firmware to v3.XX. We converted my Dad's EVO 9 in about 10 minutes last weekend. It seems to work perfectly and will probably get road tested at Toutinna this weekend. The conversion is completely reversable too except for the hole to mount the antenna as it's just a plug in module. I think you could also mount the antenna where the existing 35MHz one is if you didn't want to modify the case at all.

I've just bought a second hand EVO 12 that I'm going to upgrade with the universal Jeti TU2 module so I will be able to use either 35MHz or 2.4GHz at the flick of a switch.
The only downside I can see with Jeti Duplex compared with M-Link is that the telemetry is displayed on a separate LCD (the Jetibox or Jetibox Mini), not the EVO screen. So it's not quite as tidy but I'm just going to mount the Jetibox Mini on top of hinged screen on the EVO and I think it'll be very acceptable. All Jeti 2.4GHz receivers are telemetry capable with RX voltage monitoring built in as standard whereas only specific larger and more expensive Multiplex receivers are telemetry capable.

Is the Epsilon 90 still available?
If so I'll take it.

Thank you for that explanation Richard.

As for Martins plane,……..without wishing anybody’s plane to get damaged it’s very gratifying to know that I’m not the only one who “bends ‘em” .....

Hi

That plane's not damaged.
It's got thrust vectoring - the motor is connected to the rudder servo.

I was over for a visit a week back - thanks guys! - and yes it is a huge hall.
Superb venue for indoor flying. The only downside is the astroturf. It's pretty rough for taxiing and not as forgiving as a wood floor when you clip it! You slide or bounce on a smooth floor but the astroturf seems to grab you. Still, that's not a showstopper.

Anyone got an MX-22 in good shape going second hand?

That was great day's flying Ralph. I really enjoyed it.
Good bakewell too!

It was good to see the guys from the north - very impressive flying and nice toys! I was very tempted to get a Deluxe off Richard but I resisted.

A super event all around, well done!

I forgot to bring a camera but I'm sure I saw Ralph wandering around with one.....
