Title: Avacro - Aerobatic Flying wing
Post by: Fred on August 21, 2011, 10:39:47 AM
...Well, that's the plan anyway!  :D

Remember this squetch :

Well, Friday evening, received the lasercut parts... That was not going to stay untouched for long! I tried a lasercutter based in Ireland (Leinsterlaser) and all the parts are well cutted, no burn marks (machine setting is top notch), but more about that later!

More gliders Bill!  :P

Wingspan : 2m
Profile : AZ200x (5 I think... have to check the plan!)

Parts received :

And after an hour of gluing stuff :

I will make a proper building log on the website. Time to go flying now!  :D

Alright, time to go back gluing stuff together!
Already a year since I touched this project!

So, had another look at the wing, and decided to change the wing platform.
Very easy change, and quick to do. Wings are going to be straight! And that's it!
Reduced span too, at 1.48m, but same wing surface overall.

New plan:

So, file done, lasercut done, and started to build the thing.
And after 30 minutes (thanks CA and quicker), had my wing structure done  :D

Very basic and quick to do.
I am also using stock TE.

Looking good, a bit like a toon like glider with the big fuselage  :D

And the 2 big girls like it a lot  :D

More tomorrow!

Good one John
Looks more like a Charentaise!

Yeah, really like the fuselage shape. Did a quick drawing, using this fuselage, but with  a carbone boom to make it a "conventional" glider.
One day maybe! Too many projects, so little time!  :!:

Managed to get free for an hour this week end to do a bit of work on this wing.
Good progress, and that should be finished tonight  :D

Here are a few photos :

One wing sheeted...

And the second one done...

Yep, that's a big rectangle with a fuselage  :D

And the covering started soon after, with the fuselage:

Really like the shape of the fuselage!

Anyway, plan is to cover the wings tonight, and put the servos if I have time, but whatever happen, first flight should be this week end, weather permitting of course.
Stay tuned for more!  :D

Wing profile as you can see is relatively thin, about 9% on top of my head  :D
Very light as is, I'll weight it tonight out of curiosity.
I'll try to make some stickers and put some color on it at some stage...

Looking forward to the first launch  :D

 Yeah, I wish, but unfortunately, I don't have enough time during my week ends to go for a day out these days  :!:
That will be at my local slope, 5 minutes drive from my house  :D

Wind not good this week end for the local slope  :(
Cleaning up the workshop... And OMG as they say on the Interweb!

It's flying!  :D
So now, we can call it a flying wing!

Ok, just 4 launches down the slope, as the slope is in the clouds (less than5 metres visibility!) and pretty much no wind, but the launches were successful.
My CG is a bit too forward (CG at 20%), next trials will be with the battery back a bit (no lead).
Photos of the beast at the slope later  :D

Post by: Fred on October 29, 2012, 20:13:00 PM
Here we go.
First, the "view" of the slope.. Could not see a thing! So a white plank...
But that was not going to stop me!  :D

The wing at the slope:

So, CG moved back a tad, and now, the waiting game for the next decent week end to try it again  :!:  :!:

But already very pleased with the performance that wing put in today  :D

Hi Fred,
Great it's working out. Would like to see it fly. I had a fall last week and broke my left wrist so cannot drive for at least 6 weeks. If you or anyone going to the slope can pick me up from Templeogue it would be much appreciated, just need advance notice to charge batteries.
John.

By the way... Did some proper flying with the wing at our last meeting.. Love it!  :D
That thing fly great, but you need a bit of wind! (about 10km/h and up), Certainly due to the F3F type profile, but that thing is great in the air  :D

Hope to get in flight photos and videos at our next meeting now :)
