Hello there,
The first ISR Fly-In of the year will be held the 10th and 11th of May 2008 at Mount Leinster.
Note that Vincent and Joelle Besancon from France will be there, flying with us !!  :D  :D
The event is spread on 2 days to allow people coming from far away (Kerry and so on...) to have a bit of a rest and enjoy the week end without having to rush on the roads !

I've now got something to race with Chris. We have a couple of new 2 metre moldies on the way for the shop and I have the terrible task of testing one out!
So count me in.

Icewind we have a club Easyglider that you can fly if all your gliders are in Portugal.

They are in the post Chris
I will put them up on the site as soon as they arrive with photos and videos etc..
Just need to get out flying now a get some video.
2 metre all molded F3B/F3F type glider. MH32 profile.
Just one quick flight in strong lift (coast site) so far. But it flies great. Need to do a little more work and then I'll fly the **** out of it and see how it holds up!
They will be around the €300 mark. Perfect first moldie and a good introduction to performance gliders I reckon!

I may charge the LiPo today, it's been stopped for these weeks and i don't want it go all the way down... :(

Ok, so Bill, from NI, this is really simple.
Take the M1 to Dublin
Then, take the M50 south and stay on it !
At the end, the M50 join the N11 - M11 and follow the road !
You go across the Wicklow mountain and so on. There is a new motorway that goes from Wicklow to GOREY, simply go straight, at the motorway end, you go back to the normal rad, direction to FERNS.
Once at FERNS, you need to go to BUNCLODY.
But we can meet together either FERNS or BUNCLODY and we do a convoy from there.
Dublin Ferns, take me 1.30hr on a normal day.

I also have the KMZ (googleearth) files for Mt Leinster if you want them. But basicaly, from Dublin, once you are on the M50 south, that is straight ahead down to Ferns  :D

Thanks Fred,

I it's 1.5hrs from Dublin. It would make around a 3 - 3.5 hour trip from Belfast. Will almost certainly be down for the fly in on at least one day

That will be great to see you Bill ! :D
Like that, we can talk about me coming to NI for 1 or 2 meetings this summer (If some of you are interrested to do the trip with me, more than welcome ! :D ).

By the way, the ISR meeting is going European, as we will have a French and German delegation !  :D  :D  :D
So far, more Frenchies than Irish at the meeting !!

Come on Ireland !!  :P  :D

More information soon, but sound like 2 days of pure fun already !  :D  :D
Title: Some guy called JOE at the MACI council meeting
Post by: garrykeogh on January 30, 2008, 11:39:20 AM
Well it looks like your dates got on the official calendar.  I was sitting behind "glider secretary" Joe at the meeting last night and I think all the dates got put up. . . well done Joe.
I have never made it to any of the events on Mt. Leinster, hope to change that this year.  I flew at Kilaloe with a couple of friends on the way home from Shannon one day, fantastic place.  I saw a Kilaloe event go on the calendar too.  Some of my outlaws spend time in West Clare during the summer. . . note to self, maybe coordinate some pleasure with the outlaw duties. . . hmmm!  That would set a precident   8)

We (www.srfc.net) have a newsletter going in the post in the next week or so, I will see if I can get the soaring members off their a$$ for some of these events.

It really is great to see some coordination amongst the gliding fraternity. . . well done all involved

Hiya Garry
Yeah all the dates went up alright(I hope). Hope we can get a few more people out this year. Be great if you could add the dates to your newsletter.
We the will be having monthly glide-ins starting in March with a day or two aero-tow/flat field(bungee/electric) flying over the summer as well. I will send you on dates as soon as we decide on venues for each day. Maybe one month Mt Leinster one month Dublin area. We need to decide that.
Also, we have a date of the 7th of September for an ISR glide-in too. That venue I have left open. So maybe we will look at Dublin area for that one just to mix it up a bit.
Be great to do some flying with the shankill guys. Do you still fly the Sugar Loaf?
J

Hi Joe,
All sounds very good indeed and yes, we fly opposite the Great Sugarloaf.
There are some large enough models in Shankill for towing.  We have done some in the past alright and I know that it wouldn't take much to get some tugs organised.  It goes without saying that we would be happy to see you all visit.  We have a BBQ on site and electricity available too 8) . . . all the creature comforts!
Let me see if I can get some of the soaring guys motivated.  Would be great!  I will keep in touch.

Do you still fly gliders from the Sugar Loaf itself?
Joe
Title: ISR Glide-In - May 10-11th 2008
Post by: garrykeogh on January 30, 2008, 14:08:16 PM
Hi Joe,
I have flown a couple of times myself from the Sugarloaf.  There was a time years ago when there was a bunch of lads that arranged some gliding frequencies for the sugarloaf with our club.  The prevailing wind is straight on the south west side of the mountain, facing our club.  My own experience is that the lift is not brilliant.  What I have found is that, due to the shape I guess, the wind is as inclined to go around the hill as it is to go upwards.  What I mean is, when you find the lift, it is has a narrow sweet spot and is not all that much fun to fly off.  There are much better hills with the better lift within 10-15minutes drive of the Sugarloaf.

Have you guys flown at Lugala, over lough Tay? (Spellings may be wrong) It is the area where the tourists look down on the "Guinness" family home on the West side of Djouce Mountain.  I have flown from inside the wall dozenes of times, looking over the lake.  I will say that once I got booted out by a ranger.  He told me that the homes in the valley use radio to communicate and that I was jamming their signals.  You and I both know that either he was using a phoney excuse to move me on or that the valley uses 35Mhz radios. . . I think not.  It is a great spot to fly in  westerly conditons and has a great card up it's sleeve.  It is a natural bowl way down below where we fly.  If it is a sunny day and the breeze falls off, just as you expect to have to scrounge for lift, the nice big thermal bubble that lives at the bottom of the bowl comes out to play  .
One note,  if you do get booted out, hop over the wall on the other side of the road and fly off the public right of way over the top of Djouce, right the way to sally gap and the source of the Liffey.  The lift is even better all the way up there, it is a good climb for a chubby lad like me

Of course you can !  :D
And this is a 1 by 1 race, not like a 60" type race, so no risk to break something in a collision !

Worth a try anyway, the worse thing that can happen is a good laugh !
And the winner buy the Guinness by the way !

Hi Guys,

David > Sorry, not sure I used the good words here.. By free flight, I mean, well, do what you want !  :P  :D

So far, no interrest shown in any of the categories, so, I guess that will be "free flight" all over the week end...

Ralph > So far, I just have the long forecast for a 47km radius around the coats line.. And so far, it's all looking good !
30 km/h wind, coming from the NE, the best as we can launch from the car park !  :D

But we'll see, as another forecast show big sun, but relatively no wind...

Bring whatever you have, as we can fly any wind directions and any size of models !
Bring some electrics too, just in case..

I'll do another forecast later this week.. I'll try, as I have all the guest from France coming tomorrow and friday ! Going to be busy !  :D

Weather does not look to bad for the weekend. May be some showers, but where there is showers there is thermals. Not sure about the wind though. Should I bring my bungee Fred. Not sure what day I will be there, probably Saterday.
Title: Sorry!

Sorry guys, I'm not going to be able to make it this weekend. I had hoped to come down for the weekend from Belfast, but ex-wife has changed dates of access visits and I have my daughters.

Will try and get down in Sept if you have another event then.

Hi Guys,
Sorry, late answer to everything ! Bit busy !  :D

Bill, no worries ! We will see you in our next one in September, and why not, in NI before that !

Chris, that was nice to see you yesterday !  :D  Shame about the weather, not even one flight !    Next time !!

Alright, so, for the week end... Weather is looking really good !
NE wind too, the best and easiest !
Forecast says light wind (10 kph), but that might be stronger up the mountain ! The dynamic on the NE slope is really good, so, even with light wind, that will work !
Bring a floater, just in case, and electric planes/gliders, if we have to wait for the wind to pick up a little !
Sunday looks like the best day, but really sure... :?:  Both days have the same forecast...
On another forecast, I have a 20kph wind, same direction... Fingers crossed they are right ! Bring the heavy stuff in this case !   :D

Alright so, I'm off again ! I have 8 French slope tourists coming this morning ! Going to the slope straight away in Dublin  :D

I'll be at the 9 stones car park tomorrow morning at 9am ! :D

See you all tomorrow guys !

Hi everybody,

Thanks a million for all you guys coming this week end ! Cork, Kerry, Dublin were well represented !

How to resume this week end ??... Was thinking of 3 words like "Oh my God !" and another one like "Woww !!"  :D
The first forcast was the good one ! Light wind coming from the NE, small showers for saturday morning (all in all, 3 minutes of rain...) but really good dynamic until 12pm.
After that ? Well, wind from the valley, and some of the most powerfull thermals ever seen in Ireland !
Well, when some crazy guys launch a 4kg Alpina, the wind coming from the back, and the thing is satellised in less than a minute, that's a sign that the conditions are going to be good !
On sunday, the Hifly, even in a spin was going up !

We've counted up to 8 gliders in the air at the same time on saturday afternoon and sunday !
A few "landings" down the hill, but that is part of the thermal hunt !
Even the P51 Pss took some thermals ! (until the aerial got stuck to the aluminium fuselage after some aerobatics, and lost control... Thanks EPP !  :D )

So many things to say ! I'll take more time later !
Now, some photos ! Have hundred more to put ! And video coming soon !

Enjoy !

OMG.  I am sick that I missed the whole weekend :(  :(  :(

I have a confession... that I fly helicopters too.  I was the contest director for the first round of the Heli Challenge Trophy competitioin that was scheduled for 26th April.  The competition was postponed twice and eventually ran on Saturday 10th.  There was no way I was being allowed to shirk off my family duties on Sunday after three consecutive saturday/heli days.

I guess I will just have to meet you all at one of the other events :?:

Great picrures (happy faces everywhere), I am sorry I missed it now :(

Fred, Great that you had perfect weather for the weekend, I would of loved to have been there flying too.

I was up to my eyes changing nappies/feeding our new babies. There was no chance I could sneak off for a few hours.

Fred,
thanks for organising a great weekend. Les and I had a great time. It was super to fly the Dandy and the Dragon in such strong thermal lift. The French were a wonderful bunch, Looking forward to Retroplane next year

Ralph

Just like to add my vote to the thanks to Fred for a great event (although I suspect he didn't build Mt. Leinster as such!).

I put together a blog giving my personal experience of Sunday with lots of photos and sent it to Fred, but it seems something is wrong?

Hi Chris,

Working on it ! Strangly enough, I don't have access to the ISR website to give access to the blog feature
(well, we don't have a lot of request for this feature, might explain the thing  :?: )

Joe, if you are around  :D

Hi Fred,
Thanks for organizing a great weekend. Almost didn't go cause I thought wind would be too light for flying which it was from time to time. Few short hikes down the hill but not too many :)  Enjoyed flying in thermals for first time. :D

Altogether very glad I made it down. Wonderful group from France, nice to meet them all. Hello to Vincent & Joelle, Marie-Ange & Benoil, Ronan & Isabelle, Eawan, Laurent and Stephen. Hopefully see you all next year at Retroplane 2009.

Fred is Bennetsbridge a possibility for campsite for next year, unfortunately its inland.  http://www.camping-ireland.ie/caravan-parks/camping.php?id=60
