Title: 1/3 scale Ka3
Post by: Fred on November 02, 2007, 08:46:05 AM
Hi there,

So, here is my new project for the beginning of the winter !
During Retroplane, we were talking and showing the 1/4 scale Ka3, and between 2 glasses of schnaps    some of the German guys suggested that the Ka3 is fine, but bigger, that will be better !  :P

Ah well, sometimes, it's hard to say no to things like that !  :D

So, I have redraw the smaller Ka3, change a few bits and pieces, and here we go !
Slow start, let's say a warm up, with the tail mounting pieces.

The parts :

And 10 minutes later :

And that's it for today ! Next on that piece is to glue the carbone tubes for the V tail.

Next... Well, I have to make space in the garage now, and I'll certainly start the fuselage.

Fred

Looks nice Fred  :D . Can't wait to see it fully built. You can't beat laser cut parts. I'm telling you, my next project will have to be Laser Cut. Cuting out the parts your self is like  :!:  :!:  :!:  :!:  :D  :D

Thanks Alan  :D
Well, it's cutted, but you still need to glue all the parts together... That put dirt on my fingers  :P

Sunday, busy day in the workshop, with the building of the fuselage.

A looooong 5x5 hardwood strip is placed on the plan. Everything is aligned with a laser and fixed to the workbench.
Then, all the formers are glued to the wood, checking at each time the alignment :

Of course, you also need to check that evrything is square !

And we glue everything slowly, making sure everything is straight

Then, we can glue the wing support on the fuselage

Title: 1/3 scale Ka3
Post by: Fred on November 05, 2007, 13:38:42 PM
Then, the next job is to glue all the 5x5 hardwood strips to the fuselage...Twice ! because  I glue a first 5x5 strip, then, once dried, I glue a second one on top. Easier to bend, and once the second one is glued and dry, this is, well, I think, much stronger than a single 5x10 strip.
Of course, you glue each strips doing each side at the time (symetric and avoid the fuselage to go banana !  :P)
And you can check that everything is square using the laser

Once dry, you can move the fuselage to have a first overall look at the beast !

So, next, finishing of the fuselage webing, and another few bits and pieces and we can start to have a look at the wings !

What kind of laser do you use Fred. Do you have a pic of it.

Hi Alan,
This is a Black and Deker laser. This is a leveler, and "draw" a straight line.
I'll take a photo tonight. Cost me around 20 euros in Homebase  :D

I never had to use it before, but in this case, this is really handy !

Hi Alan,
So, here is a photo of the laser thing :

And the progress on the fuselage :

The webing is finished !  :D  The fuselage is now really strong and light.
Next, I think I'm going to shape the nose and work on the Vtail  :?:

Hi Fred,

Wow! Great build and a nice fuselage. You have left me behind already!  Just about got all the bits of the B4 cut out now - just finished the ribs.  Had problems with the outer tapered part of the wing as using the sandwich method the section turned out weird - the outermost rib blank is tiny.  In the end, plotted and cut the ribs individually - at least the section is now consistent out to the tips. Will start on the fuselage assembly over the weekend.  Any advice on how to plank a fuselage?  Never done this before.

Hi Peter,

Good to start a new project !
For ovoid fuselage like the Pilatus, the best way is to use 5 or 10mm wide balsa strips, and do the sheeting like a boat shell.
Easy and pretty much straight forward.
Other than that, you can use cardboard templates and plywood ( 0.4 or 0.6 I'd say at your scale :

Back to the Ka3 now, with a bit of work on the huge V-Tail over the week end !

All the pieces

And here we go ! The V-Tail assembly is a non event.. no difficulties at all here...

Ok, you can see the burn here... I think the cnc laser machine did a break here

And the result to motivate me !

Next are the LE, sheeting (with 2mm balsa) and the tail joiner made of carbone tubes (7mm ext. and 5 mm int.) and glued with epoxy

Same here, a non event...

Et voila ! the hinges are Robart type. the moving tail LE is sanded in 1/2 circle.

Next ?... back to the fuselage, with the nose cone, and i'll start to have a look at the cockpit interior... :?:

Ah well, no glory, it's just a big giant interresting puzzle !  :P
I had a look at the wings yesterday... Going to be big !  :D

Not a lot done over the week end...
But a bit of work on the wings.
So, 1/2 wing is almost completed, just the sheeting need to be done.
Photos of the early stages :

As I said, big puzzle ! The spar is made of Pine wood...

And then, the top spar :

For the ailerons, a balsa pieces is interlocking with the ribs.

Easy !
Well, I'll take more photos tonight, but the wing tip is done, so as the Leading edge (balsa 10mm + 5mm) and waiting for the wing joiner to come in to complete the sheeting.
I'll start the second 1/2 wing tonight !  :D

Post by: Fred on November 20, 2007, 09:28:10 AM
More work done yesterday !

The wing tips are done. the upper spar has been cutted to stick to the last 2 ribs. The gap will be filled with epoxy. The 2 triangles at the end are for the tip reinforcement... I'm a bit affraid that will bend during the covering (I will use Diacov from Diatex...Really strong !)

And the cockpit frame is on the way.... slowly but surely ! You can see everything, so, that need to be detailled ! The nose cone is not glued yet.. I have to make a tow release mechanism first....

Well, the second 1/2 wing is already on the workbench.. I can't wait to put the wings together on the fuselage to see the beast !
Title: 1/3 scale Ka3
Post by: Fred on November 22, 2007, 08:19:20 AM
Well... Moving on ! Yesterday evening was the first real assembly of the beast !
Well.. That is huge ! lots of volume... Can't wait to see that thing in the sky !

Left to do : Wing sheeting, fuselage nose cone, install the radio, airbrakes, ailerons, covering !
Getting there !

Hi Paul,

Me too !!!  :P  :P

Sick since a few days... Haven't done much in the Ka-3... Garage is too cold !
Done the ailerons and prepared some bits for the week end.
My plan is to give it a good push over the week end.. Almost done !  :D

Well, after a week off the garage (Flu.. :( ) Time to go back to the good old balsa sheets and start to do some work on the Ka3 !

So, here we go :

The wing sheeting is made from 2mm balsa. No real troubles here ! A balsa striper is used to make the 10mm wide strips for the ribs.

Good to be back !  :D

Well, after a looonnnggg break, it's time to go back to work !

This time, with the canopy frame.
The frame is made of 4mm diameter brass tube. Everything is solded using good quality solder.
The wood is protected with aluminium fold, and everything is solded in place. That will allow a perfect fit of the fram to the fuselage.

Et voila !

Looking good. Just some finishing touches to be made, and clean the frame.

Tight fit on the fuselage. Looking good. all that, for a little 2hours of work !

I also have glued the V-Tail mounting/Support to the fuselage (no photos) and I'm shaping the nose cone.
Fuselage almost ready for covering !  :D

Thanks Anthony ! Me too !!  :D
A step closer now !
So, after a long break, this week end was Ka3 time !
The fuselage is now finished, and need to be covered.
Some detailing has been done and need to be completed (a few details like the harness, control yoke etc etc)

The paint is a spray "stone effect" from the local DIY shop. Great effect, and hide all the defects !

The struts support on the fuselage were also glued. Made from 1.5mm aluminium. I also made some guides for the pushrods... The servos are in the cockpit, and it's a bit of a long way to get to the V-Tail !

And here is the beast, ready for covering (after the building jig is removed ! Very handy to have this to work on the fuselage...)

Next, the wings !
Servos, wirering and covering... Getting there !

    Well, I obey !

So, another step closer to the maiden flight ! And one thing I hate to do is now done ! Covering a fuselage like this is always a big pain !
Well, 4 hours of work to get there !

See the technicality of the thing !  :P  Ok, well, it's a bit cold in the garage...Well, that's my excuse...

So, 4 hours on, and here it is !

Look like a fuselage now ! Still very light ! I just have to add the batteries, but the final weight is there... :D
Next, the wings wirering for the servos...

I bought a can of Crown pure gloss white...
Tested on the V-Tail... :!:  :!:  Bad using a brush ! (waves on the paint... Too much surface to be painted..)

I'll go to homebase tomorrow, I'll check on a spray system... I let you know after I tested it, but can be a good airbrush system for cheap !  :D
I guess the first flight will be done without the paint job being completed...

Looking at my OSI Map it looks like part of the north slope at Mt Leinster points in a slighty north eastrly direction, the part that is up the pathway from the carpark.
I might try and make it. I'd love to fly that north slope, Oh and see Fred's Ka3 fly to of course  :D  :D  :D .

Hi Alan,

Yep, Mt Leinster is a 360 degrees slope !  :D
Remember the last time you flew at Mt Leinster ? well, on your back, this is East. The slope at the car park is North East to give you an idea.

The wind is turning more east alright. Thats a shame. North-east is really good at Mt Leinster. My favorite slope. I have never flown east at Mt Leinster. I'm not sure if or how well it will work!! There is a small ridge but don't know how it flies!. If the wind is a bit north we are laughin'. Will have to wait and see tomorrow

Good morning everyone !
Well, today, I'm a happy man !
The Ka3 have made his maiden voyage yesterday afternoon !!
All went more than OK, no trims touched, flew straight from the launch !
Just a few elevator up after a little while, certainly due to my CG too much forward.
Nothing to say really, that is a big trainer, really easy to fly ! A bit too light (we reckon between 6 - 7 kg...).

Sorry, no photos of the flight, nor as videos yet (my camcorder died !!  But hopefully soon !

Painting on the way !

Happy with the roller technic  :D .. Much less with the paint !!    :!:  :!:
Used Crown paint, the cheapest I can find for all my other gliders, and each time, I had a perfect finish !
For this one, I bought Crown paint still, but at least 3 or 4 time the price I used to pay... Thinking this glider worth it...
Worst paint ever !!
My advice (a bit too late for me...)..Stick to the cheapest paint you can find ! They work perfect !

Fred, think about the fact that our gliders are just to perfect comparing to the big ones, so some faults are just right. And the big advantage, if somebody is making any remark about your finsh, just tell him that the big one was the same, its just scale  :D

Well, that is true !
Seeing the state of some full size glider, sometimes, well, most of the time, ours are really neet compare to the ones we try to reproduce !

I'll give another go with another layer of paint, and we'll see tomorrow... Otherwise, as Vincent said, I'll buy another type of paint and give it a go.

Hi guys,

Thanks to today's weather and Anthony, here are tonight's photos of the Ka3 !
99.9% done, the rest is just cosmetic (pitot tube on the nose and gluing the pilt's seat with the harness).
Looks good.. 2 meters away !    still not happy with the paint job !  :!:  :!:

=P~  =P~  =P~  =P~  =P~  =P~ . That looks sweet, well at least from 2 meters away  :P   . Are those registration numbers vynal stickers or were they painted on with vynal maskes?

Thanks Stephan  :D  I have a pilot for it, that was just a quick setup in the garden (no time to put the struts too!)

Alan, there is both ! I had a bit of a missap when painting the registration number...
So Anthony cutted me stickers (I guess this is vinyl, really thin anyway !) for the other half !    but you can't notice the difference, except that one side if you look carefully, it's less clean !  :!:

Hey Fred.

I've been quietly following your progress over the last few weeks. Nice woodwork on the Ka3. :)   The Mustang reminds me of a similar model I had years ago from the US. It was a nice flier but it needed a good blow. Ralph had a Komet by the same crowd if I recall.

The iminent first flight of a 4m Fox in Cork got me to to thinking about  my Blanik last night. It's been in the box since it arrived with the postman six months ago.

Stephan's comment about a pilot got me thinking about one for the Blanik. Do you have a source of full body pilots, maybe from France ? Mr Axels creations are the bees knees, but too expensive for my tastes. I might check the Retroplane site for links.

Keep up the good work ....... and don't forget the CMAC glide-in on the 20th .....

Kevin

Hi Kevin!

Nice to be able to "talk" to you via this medium!

I simply adore Foxes, and have been trying to make up my mind about which one to get for a long while, my problem being I have never seen a decent size scale one if the flesh!  It seems to me that they are BIG planes, if you just go by wingspan alone, due to the relatively big fuses.  Those fat fuses could also make launching (particularly on your own) tricky.  It would be great if you could post some info about yours, and pictures would be even greater :D  Maybe even start a tiny little thread of your own?

I really enjoyed last years CMAC glide-in, wild horses and wagon ropes won't keep me away this year :D .  Whilst I'm praying for SW (so we can fly at that amazing spot at the Old Head of Kinsale), do you have venues close by where you can fly if it isnt blowing SW?

Cheers

Chris

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the KA3 !  :D
I have a few sources for scale full body pilots in France and in the US.
I can't remember the website names, but I'll have a look and let you know.

I actually have a 1/3 and 1/4 pilots from the US. They are looking good, but are in semi-hard latex. I can bring them in the glide-in for you to have a look. I still have to figure out what to do with them, and if we can modify them at some extend for us...  :?:
But they are way cheaper than the Axel ones !

Or if you are a few looking for pilots, why not make a mold to make them ?
I haven't translated it yet, but here is my technique to make them... Photos are enough to understand !
They are made with PU, very light ! That's also really easy to do !
You also have links in the thread for sourcing pilots.

http://www.retroplane.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=775

Enjoy !  :D  And let me know if you need something to be translated !

About the Fox, why not doing a thread here ? We really never hear from you guys !

Chris, I have a Fox, but small one (2.20mtrs).. I don't fly it anymore  :?:

Alright, Following my "hard landing" (who said crash ???  :P  :P .. These things happen, even to the best !  :P ) it's time to go back to the workshop and check the damages...

Well, with the covering, that looks much worse that is actually is !
I removed the covering, and here is what I've found :

Not bad !  :D
Thanks God this thing is made out of wood !  :P
So, the things to do is to first straight all the pieces together using CA glue.
Then, glue Sq. pieces of hardwood under with epoxy.

And after 40 minutes work  :D  :

All done ! Just need to recover the front panels now ! Not really looking forward to do it  :!:
Left to do, is one of the VTail hinges.. All dead, need all to be replaced... But that's another story !

So,........ that's how the "pro's" repair plane's is it?
All very interesting. You should publish a series of 'How to Workshops' Fred.
I want to see how you re-cover it!

Keep up the good work, and when will we see her flying again?
Title: 1/3 scale Ka3
Post by: Fred on June 26, 2008, 08:16:33 AM
Thanks Keith
Well, not sure about the pro thing though  :?:
I did a few technical article on the website, but they are the less watched compare to all the other pages.. Not sure there is still an interrest in this kind of things on these RTF days  :-s

Anyway, the good thing is that the glider is made of wood.. And I built it, so I know where all the small pieces are going at the end, that's help !    :P
The main thing to watch is to be carefull not to twist the fuselage while rebuilding, other than that, all easy to fix.

For the covering, well, I'm not the best guy for that ! I'm absolutely rubbish in covering, and the Diacov is not an easy covering material to use  :!:  But I'll try ! The best will be to recover the entire fuselage, but I have no time, leaving for France next Week end for Retroplane ! :D
That's why now, I'll only do fully wooden gliders !  :P

Stay tuned ! :D

Hey Fred,

Ten weeks latter and I remember to post a reply. I need to visit the forum more often. I'll take a look latter at the Retroplane link for pilots, so thanks for the steer. I'm not putting much time into the fleet these days for various reasons so I won't be needing a pilot for a while yet.

I've watched the Ka3s maden flight on the thread. I know I lean towards glass ships, but there is certainly something romantic (?) about the old wooden vintage machines.

BTW, I think the Fox has flown. It belongs to Ralph, not myself. I have an L213 on the bench similar to Joe's. She's the one looking for a pilot !

Happy landings .......

        Kevin

PS    The MACI video was great. Keep posting them for us armchair fliers.....!

All done now !
Here is the (almost) finished result...

Still a few wrinkles, but you can't really do it much better...
The best solution at this stage would have been to re-cover the entire fuselage... But no time, this is a big piece to do, and Retroplane is near us !

But finally, after a layer of paint...

The result is quiet good !
Can't see a thing 1 mtr away...
Second layer is coming soon, and that will be the final touch !
Gliser ready to go again !  :D

Fred, if you ever look at the typical club glider, it's all seams and patches and mismatched panels of covering anyhow. (Least the ASK13s and ASK7 I was around were!) So you're still sclae... :)

Here are 2 photos of what is so far, the most beautiful 1/3 Ka3 I know !
First flight was done 2 days ago, all went well !
Built from the Kit, with wings plywood sheeted, and all the scale details ! (shame to have to cover all that at the end !  :(  )

bodies, arms and legs from foam,  pullovers from sleeves of my kids pullovers and jeans from old jeans et voilá, pilots to grace any cockpit.

Hi Ralph,

Contact for Johannes in your inbox  :D

As for pilots, I have ordered some in a few different places :

www.premierpilots.net/ (but only 1/4. Good quality stuff for a reasonnable price)
http://www.iflytailies.com/store/pilots/1-3-scale-pilots/  (never tried)
http://www.Perfect-Pilots.com
http://www.thepilotpeople.co.uk/

And lots more!
I bought also some that were in latex, to be painted from the US. Bought 2, in 1/4 and 1/3 scale, but they are no good for us unfortunately, unless you do a bit of cutting / grinding work as they are too much in a seated position if you se what I mean.
Can't remember the link, I'll try to find it.

Also, if you have a bit of time, very easy to do your own one!
You can buy head, hands / shoes and also full body pilots here : http://silencemodel.fr/category.php?id_category=75  (this is Pascal's shop)

Hope this helps,

Fred

Seen these Ralph:

Bit pricey (£180 for 1/3 scale) but very well made and can be animated!
