Lets invade Brittany! :D
Ralph, John, Roisin and myself are making the trip this year to the Menez Hom meeting.
Meeting dates are 10 - 11 - 12 May 2013 (The ascension week end is early this year).
Anybody else want to join? :D
Celtic Link ferry to Cherbourg allow us to leave on the Tuesday (7th) and leave the following Tuesday (14th), so that should be plenty of flying :D
Campsite is at a very short drive away from the slope ( http://www.menezbichen.fr/content/gb/the-camping/welcome/1/ ) but of course, other accomodations are available. This is also a very nice part of the World, with lots of things to see and visit, and that's without even talking about the food and local beuverages! :D
Last year's photos : http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1280
And on the GPR : http://lesgpr.free.fr/manifestations/reportages/menez-hom2012/menez-hom2012.htm

Fred, JP, just wondering if anyone is interested in the mobile home options? They were popular with the rest of the participants! Looking at about 250 Euro for up to six people, twice the price of camping but looks like it could be better if we have Menez/Irish weather :(
What do ye think should we look into it (also means less tents=more wine  )
Ralph
-
Ralph I would go for the mobile home option, less kit to carry and dry.
-
I'm in too if there is room, but no worries if not :D
-
http://www.secureholiday.net/tariffdetail.asp?nc=5159&lg=u&particular=47163&mo=
Cheap enough, 190 euro for a 4 person or 245 euro for a 6 person, I was thinking 2 by 4 person mobiles, does this sound like a plan?
Fred I'll give you a buzz over the weekend.
-
How many is there in our group from Ireland?
-
3 from cork 1 from Dublin and the 2 of you. I was thinking 2 mobile homes to give a bit of space. But I am open to suggestion.
-
Hi Ralph
Ferry booked, yes two mobiles sounds good, roisin, fred and I can take one, will you book them and I will send you a payment by paypal :D
-
Rosin is taking a bit of a risk there John. :o
Not everyone knows this, but Fred has a fetish for ladies underwear. 8)
(I find him irresistible in black fishnets and stilettos’ :D  )
Love & Kisses
Keith
-
bon alors c est reserve ce bateau que je pose qq jours
-
Boat booked!
Arrived the 08/05 - Leave the 15/05!
Ronan, when are you planning to leave for the Menez? The 9th ? (j'arrive le 8 a Cherbourg, tu pars quel jour au Menez? Le 9 au matin? Pour savoir si je dois reserver un truc pres de chez toi pour la nuit ou pas :D )
-
For the Oirish, are you going straight from Cherbourg to the Menez or stay a day around Cherbourg first, then the Menez?
Same question for the leave date... Are you staying at the Menez all the time, or you have plan to move somewhere else, or leave the campsite at some point before heading back to the ferry?
-
-
:D Miam miam! :D :D
-

-
Fred, we are happy to do what we are told, if there is aerotowing in Cherbourg we are happy to fly here. Can you help with organising beds/gite or something for the Wednesday night? We are easy to do what our leader FRED tells us
-
Oh boy!
Ok, working on it with Ronan.
I though that might be cool to have an Aerotowing day with the guys, if possible. All optional of course! :D
I'll update this thread with the news.
-
j ai posé la semaine suivante
vous etes combien pour le mercredi soir?
-

Guys, (Ralph), who is coming?

-
 And I bring Arthur with me too :D
-
Mobile homes booked by the way! :D
So, who wants to go straight from the ferry to the Menez-Hom? (so you will have the MH booked on the 8th then, not the 9th)
Lots of room, so the lady is pretty flexible with the dates :D
-
Hi Fred
Did some glider towing last weekend for the first time and had a great couple of flights, so I am easy about doing some towing on the first night, where ever we decide to stay on the first night.
-
Ditto
-
John get the Ash 26 sorted and get back up again before you go away and we'll tow you again, we had a really good day last Saturday  five flights we had
-

pour les autres j ai la chambre d amis a la maison

-
Ronan found a B&B 100m from his house
Will take 4 people, 30€/night/each for the nights of the 12-13-14.
For the rest, there is a bit of room in Ronan's house. (Ronan, y'a un autre Gite dans le village ou un peu plus loin au cas ou? :?: )
So this need to be confirmed to the lady. Any takers?
For the night of the 8th now... Still under decision, as the plan is to leave very early on the 9th to be at the Menez as soon as we can.
Thoughts?
Fred
-
Ill chat with the lads and get back tomorrow/sat. Put us 3 down for the first night we arrive for the B&B in France though, it will make things easier for Ronan and family.

Teaser :D
-
Good number of models. Looks a bit overcast though!!
-
Howdy everybody :)
Quick message, just to say that we had a ball! Great company, great craic, great wines!
Don't have the official numbers yet, but about 50 pilots battling the elements ( that was what we call Keith weather! No shortage of wind!)
Anyway, more later, now off to visit the D-Day sites, starting with Pegasus Bridge and the Horsa glider, Utah Beach etc etc.
then, one of my plane is going to be part of a museum collection, with a private visit etc ( see Falaise last year).
Fantastic holidays so far :)
-
Sounds like your all having fun !!!!!! Keep us informed and fly low
-
Great news Fred.
I think you’ve misunderstood the museums’ request though. It’s you they want for an exhibit, not the plane! :P
Er,…by the way, this thread is a little bit short in the picture department. So far we’ve only seen ONE!
Given that it was Frenchmen who invented both still photography, and moving photography I think you and your fellow countrymen are rather ‘letting your side down’, don’t you think!
Here, we’ve been experiencing a good ‘blow’ on the Big L as well. :D Lots of lift and loads of ballast needed. Yee Harrr!..... (That’s what I call real flying 8) )
Keith (Little)

And Alcoholic, so that qualify you
-
What did you get the trophy for fred ???
-
Ok, so, the event now... :D
We were 6 to travel to the 20th Menez Hom meeting from Ireland.
The annual Menez Hom meeting is a meeting dedicated to what we call the GPRs (Grands Planeurs RC - Big RC Gliders) and all you need, is a 4m+ glider to participate.
Gliders pit is made of 99% of scale gliders, and you have the odd alpina 4001, 5001 and some other machines that do the 1% left.
This year saw 50 pilots, from 4 different nationalities (France, Belgium, Germany and Ireland) with 80 gliders at anyone time on the pit at the slope (don't know the total of gliders, but well over 200 seeing the amount of gliders that were not put off the vans on the car park!)
Conditions were, let's say, challenging! Big winds, but unfortunately, not straight on the slope, but from the left, coming from the "petit Menez" for the one who knows the slope. So that's a lot of turbulences on the lower layer, but plenty of lift in front of us.
Landings were the big discussion on the day, with, for some weird reasons, 99% of the landing approaches were made on top of the car park, the public and the glider pit! When you have a 7m machine 2m from the cars and the public, this is quiet a sight! No clue why this was advised to be done that way, as there is at least 20 football field of space to land a glider on top of the slope! So we decided for a short landing path instead and land in front of us. Easier and safer!
Oh, and with Ronan, we were doing them in tandem with our 2 ASW15. On the spot each time and applauses from the pit  :D
We are not that bad  :P
Same way taken by the rest of us, and I am happy to report that we did not had any landing incident (Ok, I broke one of my rudder link on the Pilatus on the first landing! And that's a 20Kgs steel wire! Don't know why, as the landing was fine, but if you think that built up rudders on big models are too weak, think again! I was sure that the rudder will give up before the steel wire! I guess there was a weak spot were I crimple the wire, but the cut is slightly further up the line... Weird!)
Talking about gliders, I am happy to report that the Pilatus B4 flew great! First flight was a non event, and at 6Kgs, very light! (maybe too light!)
The Crystal is now trimmed after I modified the servos etc, so all good. 12kgs in the air is a nice sight, and thanks for that in the big wind we had!
ASW15.. Well, that's the asw15!
Ronan flew is Pilatus B4 and his ASW15, Ralph his KA8b, Kevin his Bergfalke, Les his Solution, and finally John, flew his ASH26, Minimoa and got lots of interest in the Fouga Magister with some nice flying.
Can be proud of the Irish team! :D :D
All in all, a very nice event, a good bunch of friends, and if you want to see some big machines, this is one of the place to be!
More later about the trip
-
What an amazing bunch of photos! And a couple of nice vids as well!
I found your ‘report’ very interesting Fred, thanks. But tell me. :?: If there were fifty pilots, all with planes of at least 4mtr span, how was the flying controlled? Surely there couldn’t have been more than three, or at most, four models in the air at any one time. Were the pilots allotted flying times each or something?
Very impressed with you & Ronans’ spot landings. 8) I always say that you can tell a good pilot by their landings. ( I’m just grateful to get my planes on the ground in one piece!)
Strange that you had a rudder cable that snapped for no apparent reason, and I’ve had a servo arm that broke recently, also for no apparent reason!
K.
-
Hi all,
Great pics and vids, seems like ye had a ball. Fred for 2 pack paint try Waller & Wickham in Baldoyle ind est. They supply paint, epoxy and heavy glass for marine use. Its not cheap but good quality.
John.
-
Thank you all :D
Thanks John, I'll check that. Otherwise, plan B is to order some in France (job for you in September Ralph! :P :P ). No point re-painting my fuselage now as the paint will not stick, and I'm tired of doing it every year! :!:
Keith, the cup was for.. I don't know, was not listening!  We were having a laugh with Ronan and I had to go and get it after I heard my name. Let's say collective cup. We left it with Ronan as none of us wanted to have a dust collecting device in our house!
The trip now - Part1 :D
We took the usual Night ferry from Celtic Link, leaving Rosslare at 9pm, and off we went on a smooth crossing to Cherbourg.
The Irish team:
Most of our time was spent at the bar, for some nice Guinness and other beverages. Of course, some nice chats etc etc, a good trip! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/IMG_3671.jpg)
Of course, because it is a small world, we managed to meet some fellow French modelers that we met last September at the Aerotow in Falaise! They were leaving Ireland after visiting their daughter who now leaves in Cork, in the same street as Kevin!
So, after Cherbourg, we did our usual stop at St Mere l'Eglise for a bit of visiting, looking for cats and macaroons! And the usual stop at the boulangerie for more cakes and dessert for the diner! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/IMG_3685.jpg)

Hmmm, cakes!
We then headed to Ronan's house :D
Order of the day was to finish my Pilatus B4. Thanks to John and his Vinyl cutting machine, he made some nice set of stickers to apply to the fuselage
Group effort, good laugh and nice Apero! Holidays! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/IMG_3700.jpg)
And then, time to fill the cars for a very early drive to the Menez Hom (well, for some :P :P )

And after the visit of a few other pilots, time to go to bed.. For another day of flying!
With even more flying!
By the way, we were amongst the first ones at the slope (the guys before us were the ones who were sleeping on their campervan directly on the slope).8.30am start!
Slope was pretty much empty, good to test the machines for their first flight (like the Pilatus) or for setup (like the Crystal).

We travelled back to Ronans house on the Sunday, however, we stopped off in Saint Malo, just can't find the pics yet, we post later! :?:
On the Monday, Ronan took over the driving, so we visited the D-Day locations and museums along the coast.
First stop was the Pegasus bridge museum at Caen. This is the bridge that the british 6th airborn made a glider assault to take and hold the bridge.

Next stop on our tour, was the D-day beachs,Sword, juno, Gold, Omaha and Point Du Hoc. The only place we did not visit was Utah.

Next stop on our tour and the last for the day was the cliff gun battery and bunkers on the Point Du Hoc. This strong hold was attacked by the US Rangers, which climbed the cliffs under fire on D-day only to find that the big guns had been removed only a few weeks before the raid, and found telegraph poles in the gun bunkers, they too lost alot of man in taking the gun battery.

Goodbye France!
Once again, many thanks to Ronan and Isa
Lots of laughs, so many good moments! these photos are only scratching the surface! You need to be there, but that was one trip not to miss!
We got an idea for a trip next year by the way... If more of you wants to join us :D :D
-
Well, a whole series of reports, thank you gentlemen for taking the time and effort to post them.
With so many different aspects to your trip, it must have been difficult to know how to fit it all into the time you were there.
What a mass of model gliders. Endless! May be I could get away with my Alpina? :?: But with my standard of repairs that I’ve done to it I’d be ashamed to show it!
Who owns the Mu28 Fred?
Incidentally JP, I have to say you looked remarkably sober during your stay in France. Could it be that you’re ‘turning over a new leaf?’ :)
The area is very rich in military history isn’t it. Great picture of’ “The SNAFU Special” (Only Americans could get away with naming a plane that  ) One day I’m gonna get a flight in a Dakota…….one day.
Loved the village with grey stone walled houses with cobbled streets, really pretty. :D Although not as pretty as Roisin & Isabelle of course! And as for Ronan trying to look pious, …..Doesn’t really work, does it.
And a shop, in France, that sells only beer ???!!! I don’t believe it. It can’t be right. (I think that was a bit of trick photography.)
I’m sure you’ve showed us the little museum with the motorbikes, toy cars and other memorabilia before, haven’t you Fred? Or was that a different one may be?
So, Benoit rides a Moto Guzzi er? 8) Obviously a man of culture and breeding, he & I would get on famously together. BTW does the ‘ Guzzi pull his model trailer, it would certainly have the power to do so. Or does he rely on the car for that task?
Finally a big thank you to Ronan & Isabelle for accommodating Fred for a whole week. :P We, in Ireland, are very grateful to you!

  Thanks Keith! (and sorry for the late answer, work managed to get in the way! :!: :!: )
I can't remember who had the Mu28  That was a setup flight. Flew very well and a nice sight in flight. Looks like a big Toon! :D
Yeah, you are right, I already posted photos of the transport museum last year. Looks much better this year, as the exibits were moved around, muche clearer now if you see what I mean :D
And the trailer is towed by the car :D Neat trailer I have to say! Benoit said that when towing it, he can't feel it, or see it, great for long drives.
Very tempting I have to say!

Hi all,
At long last, here is my video!
Quick job as I don't really have time these days to do that.
35 minutes long, kind of boring if you were not there
Enjoy! :D

I quite enjoyed that Fred. Thanks for the compilation. I liked the pause, and then spot landing by the Italian retro model. (I have no idea what model it actually was I’m afraid.)
And there was a little aerobatic flying as well, just to impress! Thanks for sharing the event with us all.
Well done that man
