I'm curious if anyone's been flying small aerobatic gliders like the Mini Toons or Le Fish etc. These could be fun for occasional glider fun fly competitions (Limbo, all up inverted racing, etc.)
I was thinking of building something along these lines probably around 50" from EPP or urethane foam with carbon/balsa/ply as required.
Just a thought!

Hi Aidan,
Funny you talk about VTPR gliders!
I tried to find time to put one of my plan/design available to download (Designed in 2008, but found out 3 weeks ago that it has been "stolen" amongst others... And no, not a Chinese company! So, better put that one for free here :D )
It's bigger than 50" but I can reduce it.
I'll put a view tomorrow.
-
Last summer I was talking to Joe, (and others) about building a 4 axis flyer.
I was originally thinking of a Madslide but finally settled on the idea of a mini Tune.
I think they sound like a lot of fun. 8) Like you, I was thinking it would probably be best to build a foamie so it could take the knocks.
Bill made a Madslide but bashed it up earlier this year I believe. :(

Great idea gents !
I have built 2 depron Swingers and they are fun buy lack a few important things for me !
1 being they are not robust ,
2 I still find the design wrong for knife edge flight !
I am interest in seeing Freds design,
Richard

Good morning everyone :D
Ok, so, here you go, 2 screenshots of what I did 2 years ago :
The size of the design was for a 1.8m glider, all foam, with a nice spar system for the wings and elevator (everything can be removed for transport, and take no space at all).
Fuselage is 1.3m long.
Did the same, but 2.5m WS. The fuselage was massive!
I have the files for the cnc cutting machine, but that can be resized to any size anyway, but big like that, is kind of cool! :D And that was to change from the smaller vtpr style foam machines out there.
Profile was choice of a TP, or the good old SB96/VS, or anything you want (flat sides where the wings seats).
I've also made the same one with wingeron, and also a 4 servo wings... Everything is do-able.
If some of you are interrested, I can print the plan or give you the files (I think some cnc foam machine are under used :P :P ). Can be a nice group project :D

Hi Richard,
Yeah, I had look at the Swinger a little while back and considered building one but I don't think it's exactly what I'm after, mostly because I don't think it would last long! Depron could be handy for making a quick prototype but I reckon it's worth going to a wire cut wing for a decent airfoil. EPP or even urethane foam would be much more robust.
I'd done a few drawings for a possible design but hadn't got a final version yet. I'm thinking anything smaller than say 1.1m is going to be poor for energy retention and efficiency (even for this sort of flying). I was looking at about 1.3m (50") but that might still be a little on the small side.

I like it Fred!
Very similar to what I had in mind except for the size. The all-moving tail featured in my drawings too. I'm starting to think you're right about going a bit bigger.
If there are a few people interested in making these we could certainly get a few sets of cores cut together. I was going to dust off the hot-wire and cut my own set of cores but it's not a job I like and I'd be using templates and a manual bow - so less accurate and less consistent. Anyone got a CNC hot-wire or know somewhere to get it done?
Fred - I reckon the wingeron version would be more vulnerable to "ground contact"? I'd rather go with a 2 or 4 servo conventional wing for durability and so we can use camber change for light lift and for elevator mixing in aerobatics. Which did you like best?
Aidan

Joe has a cnc wire cutter :D …………(ask me how I know).
Er,…. Joeseph,……….oh Joeseph,………come out of hiding now, it’s time to play!
-
Thanks Aidan (and sorry for the late reply to the post  )
Haven't flown the prototype much, as it was all in light foam, and too light in my taste (no energy retention or good penetration in wind). The wingeron one was demoniac, especially combined with the full flying elevator with almost 90 degrees movement! Did not noticed it was more fragile, but I used big servos at the time (10kg, full metal), but haven't flew it long enough to know anyway.
Aileron one was good too, but only had a few flights at the local slope. I may have photos of the completed model somewhere :?:
Anyway, I'm in for another one!
Keith, I think Joe is busy this week end (Electric Picnic), not sure after that :?: (Joooeeeeee ????)
So, who have EPP ? Group order for the blocks ? :D
-
I’m in for a 1.8m wing version. :D
I’m thinking; these planes are gonna almost certainly be hitting the ground at some point so would not a single piece fuse be stronger than a two piece one?
OOHHH, this is exciting. They might even be ready for the autumn gales! Oh woopee!!
Keith
-
Hey Keith,
Sorry no, the 2 piece fuselage was for the cutting company. They are then glued together (was to fit in a standard EPP block).
Who have EPP ? Where ? How ? What ??
-
Thanks Aidan (and sorry for the late reply to the post  )
You should be sorry... Over 12hrs!

I'm in for one (I'll check with Eanna - he might be interested too). 1.8m sounds good to me, or anything in the 1.5 to 2m range.
What aerofoil? How about TP42 root, TP29 tip?
http://tracfoil.free.fr/airfoils/t.htm
I haven't looked at these in any detail but they should be very suitable for this type and size of plane.
Aidan
P.S.
The only EPP I have is a little bit of sheet for indoor planes. Where can blocks be got?
-

EPP block and sheet
There's also a company in S. Wales called Linpac who sell it. Fred may know of some European sellers.
I hope to have my CNC foamcutter running in the next month or so :?:
-
Thanks for the link Bill.
I know a few EPP dealers, I check for prices and sheet sizes.
So, to make sure, who would be interrested in an EPP VTPR thingy model ? (the one above, or another one... I have the plan for the Minitoon, Padawan (82cm WS though... But I can enlarge it...))
-
Fred,
Put me down for one of the models in the first plan you’ve shown on this thread with 4 servo 1.8mtr span wing please :D

Yeah, I know  On call for the week for work... Tired!
For the profile, well, whatever you want ! :D Must be thick enough for the spar system though, but I'll check on the plan and come back to you in the morning.
Ok, checked for EPP blocks... Found 900x590 x 150 block for 49 euros... 20kg/m2 + shipping.
Bit more expensive than Bill's link, but we can in theory make an entire model out of 1 block... I check that with the plan.
Have other links for EPP, but prices are roughly the same, or if not, shipping is the killer!
I'm waiting for an answer from a big French company (GTI) who sells EPP to your specs, and were cheap the last time I checked 2 years ago... We'll see!
Anyway, I check the plan tomorrow to see what material we need for a model, can be a good base for people to join the party or not :D
I can also build an EPP prototype before deciding! I just need a good friend with a cnc machine :D :D O:)

What's the plan? Decide on a spec everyone likes and cut a bunch of wing cores and fuselage profiles?
If that's the plan I'd be happy to go with either the Minitoons or your design. I'd go with the consensus on size but preferably 1.5m or more. 1.8m sounds good.
I gave Eanna a call and he wants in too.
Aidan
-
Interested :D
Funds might be the big hold back! :(
-
Hi Aidan,
Yep, if everyone can decide to join in or not, I'll move that thing forward, and we can sart to talk about the EPP order for everybody :D
I'll post the full plan etc etc of mine to give a good idea of the thing.
I can also enlarge a Swinger, Minitoon if you want, or the Padawan or whichever design you prefer :D But my preference will be for everybody to have the same, more like a group project :D (and easier to have them cutted, all the same)
I don't mind, I go with the majority for the model :D
-
I’m not too worried about which profile we use, as long as I can perform lots of fantastic aerobatics! 8)
K
-
Fuselage will be straight where the wing seats, so a profile change will be really easy !
Just need to cut the wings with the profile you want, or even 2 sets of wings, et voila :D
Ok, so checked with an EPP block size 900x590x150. Lots of room, and enough for 1 model, that include rudder and elevator in EPP too (my original plan used rudder and elevator in Correx).
A few cuts need to be made for the block (cutted in half, and then in small blocks for the various parts).
Here you go :
And a 2 views of the glider :
Of course, you can maybe make 2 minitoons or Padawan in a block (at least !) etc...
I guess we just need to find a cheap ish EPP supplier now ! I'll do a simulation for several blocks (5 or 6) and come up with a pricing. That will give us a base until we find cheaper, if that's possible.
-
Or more scale to confuse things even further :P
Everything possible :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/hexa-swift.jpg)
Same fuselage surface etc, but shaped like a Swift. Just the elevator need a rework, but that's easy stuff.
-
I much prefer the original fuselage.
I'll post a picture of the fuselage I had sketched in case you're interested. I hadn't done much work on wing and tail placement etc so it might need a little tweaking.
I wonder would we be better off with ailerons at a constant % of chord instead of a strip? Say 30% chord. That'll make the rigid part of the wing root narrower but should be more suitable for variable camber and snap flap. Are we going with the TP42 (root) and TP29 (tip) sections?
What do you use for your drawings Fred? If you use AutoCAD or something else DXF compatible I can send you a copy of my sketches and vice-versa. Also I'd love a copy of the Mini Toons plan!
Aidan
-
Hi Aidan,
Please do :D
I use Turbocad (v17) for my drawings. Can open everything :D
I clean up my drawing.
For the aileron's chord, I did that quickly for illustration, as the optimum chord depend of the profile used (like 30% for the TP202 or TP66).
I send you the files for the Minitoons in a minute :D
Also, checked for price for 6 EPP blocks :
6 blocks : 276.06
Shipping : 14.95
Total : 291.01
That's if the shipping is correct, sound cheap shipping for a big box like that! :?:
-
Mail sent Aidan :D
-
Checked prices again, and that's roughly the same with :
EPP 20kg for the fuselage, elevator, rudder
EPP 30Kg for the wings.
Sound a much better option to me to have the light fuse / tail group, and the stiff wings.
-
Here's my fuselage profile sketch. The aerofoils aren't correct.
I agree with you on the EPP weights. Fuselage should probably be 20kg. It might not be a bad idea using 30kg for the tailplane too It depends on the shape and how thick it'll be (and how it's being finished).
Would the fuselage benefit from a spar in the tail boom or do you reckon the EPP is enough on it's own? We don't want it wagging it's tail!
Aidan[/img]
-
Looking good Aidan!
-
So, if one plane takes one block of EPP. And 6 blocks cost 291 that = less than 50euro per plane! :D
When will you be ordering the plastic Fred? (Do you want the money up front?)
Keith
-
Hey Keith,
Yep, that's about right :D
I'll wait for Joe to come back from the dead or the Lost island to see if he can do the cutting.
We also need to know how many are interrested (3 so far, right :?: ), and off we go !
-
Hi Fred, add me to your list. I will pay you some cash at Mt L. next weekend.
Richard
-
Is there a big bundle of other bits we should get in a group purchase for your design Fred? I'm wondering if we should put together a bill of materials for the plane and do a group purchase on all the materials we won't have lying around? I'm thinking mostly about covering tape and materials for wing joiners and spars.
Has anyone used laminating film/mylar instead of tape on covered EPP planes?
Anyway...Is this the list so far?
Fred
Aidan
Eanna
Keith
Richard
-
Do we go for a proto build first ?
I can do it quickly, just to make sure!
For the material list, good idea !
Spars are in 10m tube, inside, the wing joiner (8mm diam).
6mm tubes + inside for elevator and incidence pins
Snakes for the elevator + rudder (fuselage too wide for a push pull for the rudder)
Clevis etc...
For mine, I'll go for a Vinyl finish all over (this is not for combat! :D ), but you can paint + reinforced tape, reinforced tape + vinyl etc etc of course.
Not too sure of the price of tape in B&Q and Homebase :?:
Joe?! Where are you ? Available for the cutting ? :D

A prototype build would be great if you're willing to do it! If it was me I'd probably take a couple of months and everyone would be getting impatient. :?:
I've never used vinyl. Maybe that's worth a try. Where do you get it and how's it applied?
Cheers,
Aidan
-
Hi Aidan,
Ok, if everybody agree, I can do the proto.
Give me less than a week for have it done once I have all the parts.
For the vinyl, in Ireland, contact Anthony (error 404 on the forum) and take the thin one, works great!
Application, it's self adhesive of course, so, slowly, with a touch of 3M77 on the EPP first for it to adhere even more.
You can work the curves with a heat gun (careful!) or a hair dryer.
My covering of choice for wings etc :D
-
Hi Fred, how is the proto type toon coming on ?
Richard
-
Yes, come on Fred where’s the prototype. :(
More to the point, where’s the production type? Do you know I haven’t built a model for over six months! I need something to build……… hurry up!
(You can't get he staff these days,..........you just can't get the staff :!: )

I have video camera awaiting a promo video !
Uncle Keith, has given me some new skills and I'm eager to test them LOL.
Fred I hope your not suffering man flu as you are extremely quiet of late.
Richard

I think Fred has gone on Strike,……he does that from time to time you know!
-
Hello there! :D
Sorry, a bit silent these days, as some work is being done in my house, so Internet connection is more or less up and down all the time !
Anyway, was looking for a loosy excuse for not having done the glider, but the truth is... I forgot !
Completely went out of my mind, and no forum's visit to remind me !
Joe, are you around for the file and the cutting ? :?:
And I'll send that to you straight away, and kick the build as soon as I have the stuff.
But busy in the workshop working on my next glider for Retroplane, and finally started up the queue of gliders I have in the workbench! :D
-
A-Ha, so Joe is the reason for the delay, I should have guessed it!
Hard luck with intermittence internet connections Fred. I think we’d all feel lost with out the internet these days wouldn’t we.
-
 Yeah, wanted to blame Joe, but I can't really now !
Just back home, and received a signed script of the Simpson by the entire cast and prod! (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Respect/respect-064.gif)
My internet should be OK for the week end now (back to vegetative state :P ). And hope to have a bit of flying! Have a new 2.4ghz system to test :D (slowwwly moving into the XXIst century! )
-
Just back home, and received a signed script of the Simpson by the entire cast and prod!
Er,.........has that model got a V or a T tail?
-
Just emailed a company to order some foam. Should have enough for 3 (4 if i don't mess up) 1.8 minitoons. Am keeping it basic. Have all the files for the minitoon so will go with that and 1.8 suits the foam block sizes. If they work out well then we can order some more foam start messing about!
Have been busy lately with other things so have done nothing model related. I'll get this done asap. Sorry keith I did promise you a minitoons a long time ago.
-
Hi Joe,
Which company do you get your foam from?
Ron
-
Hi Joe, I hope my name is on one of the Toons, please please please.
I am in need of a plane at the moment.
I will pm you my address and arrange payment.
Richard
-
Richard, have you repaired your Vector yet?
K.
-
Hi Keith, yes the Vector has been repaired and broken and repaired !
Today is beautiful and the 30mph winds are on the Big North slope but I'm unable to go up as the little kids have my day planned.
Off topic but I got a skateboard helmet and I intend to mount my vid camera on it so I can hopefully record some film when I go to the mountain on my own.
The Toon is my style of plane, cannot wait to get it up and flying.
It takes little to excite me lol
Richard
-
Ok richard I may have to double my foam order. Ron ordering from a company cal Hei-tec in Germany.
-
Just received a photo of a home made aerobatic glider (2.20m WS), fully molded...
Retro look! Love it ! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/Retroptr.jpg)
More infos when I get some! :D
-
Ok richard I may have to double my foam order. Ron ordering from a company cal Hei-tec in Germany.
Thanks Joe, your a star !
I am so so looking forward to this wee beauty after seeing you fly Freds proto type at Mt L .
Very nice plane Fred !
Another one for my wish list

Has a prototype been built and tested? That's great!
Got a picture Fred?
Who's on the list so far?
Aidan
-
ooooo i like the look of that :D
-
Hi Aidan,
Not as far as I know! :?
But getting close to have the prototype now :D
I'll keep you all updated with the progresses :D
-
First proto ordered ! Finally!
WS is 1.67m (was hoping for 2m, but was stopped by the machine capacity for the cut).
Profile is SB96V / VS with generous chords.
I might go for the quadro flap setup, to give it a go, and make it the heavy option, so more basic models will be lighter.
Changed a few things from the original plans posted a few posts earlier, to match my 3.2m fg design (long story) to make it a "mini" version.
Anyway, this is all talk, hope to receive it soon now to get cracking on the build! :D
And that give time to people with cnc machines to get ready!!
-
I can take a hint :(
-
Faster Bill, faster !!!! :P
-
Good news !
First prototype is confirm on its way to my house!
Expected to arrive sometimes next week.
Stay tuned for photos of the kit etc :D :D
Can't wait!
-
Even better news!
Kit is at home! :D
I took photos, but I'll post them as soon as I find the cable for the transfer!
Can see one or two modifications to make to make it better, but other than that, all good!
Going to be a quick and easy build :D
WS is 1.67m due to the size of the EPP blocks.
Fuselage is in 30kg blocks, and wings in 20kg.
I'm really tempted to have one made of Roofmat, with a ws of 2.5m / 2.8m now, just to see... But that will be another story!
Stay tuned for more later :D
-
  great stuff looking forwards to seeing the end result
-
Hi Andrew, me too :D
So, here is a 2 views of the model :
And the "kit" :

Not a lot of work that need to be done, but still a lot considering that this is a foamie! :P
And less work once I modify the wing mounting (always listen to the little voice, and keep your first idea!!)
Cutting is top quality, so as the EPP, very pleased with the lot.
Anyway, more later!
-
Looking good Fred  :D
-
Ok, had 5 minutes at work, so, for the laugh, and those of you who like numbers, I put the design in PredimRC for analysis...
All good :D
Here they are for info, but that's in the perfect world scenario (like all those softwares anyway, they never saw me sanding a fuselage!
Sorry, all in French...

Just need to build the thing now! :D
And fly it!
-
Is there an English versioon of Predim Fred. My French isn't good enough for the original - can barely manage Je m'appele Guillaume
-

Well, I was sure there was one in English, but can't find it :(
I think the older version were available in English, so might worth having a look at.
Anyway, in my opinion, all that is what we call "intellectual mastubation" (French expression, not sure if that work in English!) as whatever you are doing in those software, that will always be a best guess.
Try to replicate those wing polars in the real world... Good luck!
Unless you spend thousands of Euros in a proper mold and build.
That was just by curiousity, but learnt nothing that I did not knew already
-
Thanks Fred & "Intellectual Masturbation" works in English too :D
-
Ok, had 5 minutes free tonight, so I decided to get started on the Quark!
Rudder built in 5 minutes.
I decided to do it in 6mm depron with a bit of 6x6 wood. Light, but will alow me to make some changes really easy if needed.
The depron will be coated with PU varnish and silk or covered in vinyl...
Or get courageous and do it like I put in the plan! (wood or corrugated plastic).
Anyway, here you go.
Plan and materials :
Drawings on Depron :
Cutted and 6x6 wood taped (nothing is glued at this stage... Just pure curiosity :D ) :
This is relatively strong as it is... So, might keep it like this, or make a slight change (rudder base in 6mm hardwood...), but as it is, I like it...
And the lot, taped on the fuselage to check, with the Work Controller in Chief happy with the result :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/P1040411.JPG)
(Yeah, that's a good size... Fuselage is 1m long without the rudder)
Tomorrow, I'll cut the elevators following the plan. 2 cuts, and ready to glue the tubes for the joiner... Well, that's if I don't end up spending the night at the maternity tonight! 8-[
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/P1040414.JPG)
Ordred the carbone stuff I need to continue the work, but as it is, I guess it's max another hour to have the platform ready for the servos and finishing :D
-
... Well, that's if I don't end up spending the night at the maternity tonight! 8-[
[
Jeez Fred thought you'd only just found out, not that the Baby was about to appear!! :o
Hell of a way to get a 1/3 scale pilot
-
:D :P
Nope, small contractions started tonight!
Mean nothing, but car is ready just in case!
-
Hope everything goes OK and that these are just false alarms :?:
-
Still no signs of the new addition to the family!
Well overdue now!
Anyway, had an hour free today, so I started the elevator.
Pretty much an non event, but here are a few photos.
First things first, trace the location of the tubes for the joiners.
Then cut with a cutter roughly, then I used a file to make it smooth and square.
Tubes, in 1 piece are then glued using Epoxy 5minutes. I use a piece of tape on top, that make the epoxy smooth and shinny once dry... No sanding required :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/P1040421.JPG)
Once dry, I cutted the elevator to its final shape following the plan.
The tubes are then cutted in a middle with a dremel.Et voila, done!
Also time to cut the rot of the ribs (same, follow the plan, 3.5mm need to be removed).
I left the carbone tube "out" after removing the EPP of about 2mm. This allow to be able to push the elavtors halves fully, but they move freely as they don't touch the fuselage side if you see what I mean...
The tube in the fuselage end was also glued with epoxy in the slot cutted for it.
Then trimed with the Dremel.
Rudder is then glued with epoxy. Happy with the rudder in 6mm depron with the 6x6 wood. Make it very rigid! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/P1040430.JPG)
Et voila! The second Inspector in Chief is happy with my work :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/P1040425.JPG)
I think I should have enough up and down...
And finally, pleased with the result for a very little amount of work.
Still no sign of my carbone for the wings...
So, next job to be done, will be sanding the fuselage and put the servos in.
I think I'll cover the entire glider with re-inforced tape, and maybe do like my P51, primer and a gloss white on top. Very durable finish.
Anyway, we'll see!.
Happy with the end result so far, looking forward to try silly things with that thing! :D
-
Hi Fred, this looks like a crazy fun sloper !
I hope you will share her at Mt L when we visit.
Hope little Fred makes an appeareance soon.
Best wishes to you both.
Richard
-
Thanks Richard :D
Of course, it should be with me in March, and for everybody to try! :D
That thing still deserve to be around 2.8 ~ 3m WS... Working on it! :D
-
Alright, I'm back!!
And it's a girl! :D :D
I live in a world full of fairies... And all pink! (3 girls... Help! :P )
Anyway, received my flat carbone and all that, so yesterday, before collecting the girl, I sanded the fuselage.
And I hated that.
I also glued the 2 halves (waited until now, as it's easier to work on 2 smallish bits that the all fuselage) and filed the gap for the wing joiner holes with 3mm balsa.
Wing joinrs in the wings, and the spars are now drying... Should be finished more or less tomorrow :D

Thank you all! :D
And no, no number 4! I'm done! [-X
Alright, so yesterday, did a little bit of work on the Quark.
Firts, traced the line to insert the spar, on the bottom of the wing, using a big square to be perpendicular to the root.
Then, cutter, and insert the spar. Took roughly 2 minutes to do, and gives god strenght to the wing. I will add a second one on top as well.
It's inserted and then glued with thin CA.
I then traced the location of the wing joiners, and cutted them.
Everything is then glued in place with the key inside the tube with epoxy and everything is checked / double checked for all these things to be level etc.
Once dried, the usual filling etc, and time to put everything on the fuselage for the firt time to have a look at the beast! :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/P1040532.JPG)
Pretty pleased with the result!
This is also a very good size finally, not too big, but more important, not too small!
That glider would deserve to be bigger though... Anyone want to cut a 4m version out of styrofoam for the fun ? :D
Anyway, if I have a bit of time today, I'll put all the servos in, and get it ready for covering.
Almost there! :D
-
Fred, are you using a carbon rod for a wing joiner? If so, what dia is it? And why are you using, what look like, metal joiner sockets in the wing halves?
K.
-
Hey Keith,
In the wings, they are 10mm OD (8mmID) aluminium tubes (from the local DIY shop).
Wing joiners are 8mm fibreglass rods (this is black epoxy, looks like carbone, but it's not. The bling, but cheap! :P )
All that to add a bit of extra weight, as this is too light in my opinon. But can be replaced by a 8mm tube for extra light, and of course, carbone rods if you want to.
That just add 50 ~ 60 grs extra like that.
-
Hi Fred,
Send me the drawing and I'll have a look at cutting a bigger one. Perhaps fibreglass lost foam fuz and bagged wings?
I was intending to build a full size madslide, but this might be anicer model to fly.
-
Thanks Bill, we'll do :D We can talk about that in 2 weeks with a good pint :D
Alright so, I had 2 hours to kill today, so I got a lot of work done on the glider.
First, the clasic fitting of the control snakes in the fuselage. Trace, slice with cutter, insert control snake, pour thin cyano. Et voila, done!
Oh yeah, by the way, did the radio bay with a piano wire shaped in rectangle, an fixed to my solder iron. Classic.
Next, moved to the wings, and fitted the ailerons servos. Quick job.
Traced the ailerons, all ready to be cutted.
I then sprayed the entire glider with 3M 77.
And finaly, the part that took me 1h30 out of the 2hrs I had : covering the entire glider with re-inforced tape and painting...
REally hated the taping part. That's a nice way to completely destroy a rather good looking machine in something full of wrinkles etc etc, especialy around the nose!
My plan was to cover all that with white vinyl, but after a minute of hard thinking and a cuppa, what's the point! That thing is supposed to be flown like there's no tomorrow, all terrain and all that! (plus, why spending hours on a foamy thingy to make it look like it's all molded!?. my own personal opinion of course, hope I did not offended some hardcore foamy lovers! :D :P )
Anyway, I sanded the entire glider to prep it for paint (nope, could nt left it tape naked either! :D ) and sprayed it with glossy white (hard enamel for radiators... They did not had white colour appliance paint at the local DIY shop :!: ).
Painted the canopy blue... looked too toyish! Back to black!
And here is the result! All done, just need to make the servos linkages, my job for tomorrow night :D
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/Fred/P1040632.jpg)
And for size (not easy to smile with the sun in your face! :P :
Overall so far, happy with the look of it, not so happy with my finishing !
First flight this week end wind permitting, or during the fly-in.
-
Looks great Fred!
I look forward to hearing how it goes.
What size servos are you using with those massive ailerons?
Aidan
-
Thanks Aidan, me too! :D
I use MGs servos, I can't remember, but I think they are 2kgs ones. More than enough.
-
Hi Fred , she looks cool
Vive La France
You are 100% correct !
Foameys are for fun and will never fly like mouldies
Foameys fly better and bounce better.
Thats why I love then,
BOUNCE BOUNCE BOUNCE
The ailerons are like barn doors !!!!!!!!!!!!
Yippee I think she will be very exciting plane.
Richard
-
lookin really good Fred. must finish the minitoon so we can fly try them together.
-
Thanks Joe / Richard :D
Remove the finger, and finish that Minitoon will you! :P
And for the ones that want to give it a go if that thing is flying correctly, bring a spare receiver with you (I'm mode 1, so can't really share the radio with the majority here :( )
Oh, by the way, a bit early, but better to get prepared, if that fly, who will be interrested in a "kit" ?
-
...Oh, by the way, a bit early, but better to get prepared, if that fly, who will be interrested in a "kit" ?
One for myself and one for my Dad I think.
Aidan
-
Hi Fred, you may add me to the list.
I am Lithuania flying indoor and having a ball
See you all next weekend.
Richard
-
Hi Fred
Put me down for one as well!
-
Hi all,
Well, I'm happy to report that the Quark flew for the first time this week end... And flew very well! :D
Apart for my issue with the bending wings (I only received 1/2 the flat carbone I ordered remember) and the elevator neutral, being.. well, adjustable in flight  (I received the wrong push rods, so had to do a fix... 0.8mm piano wire is bending to much! :!: ).
Anyway, that thing fly great, a bit on the light side, but ballast option is here for that! VTPR is a delight.
Had some great craic flying the thing right on the lift.
Definitively a keeper for me!
Can't wait to sort out my issues to fly it fast! (acceleration is good, but then, bendy wings make that thing do weird, but funny, stuff! :P )
Was thinking that the rudder was going to be too small, but the response was surprisingly good for the size! I might give it a 5~10% increase though to make it more fun! :D
Soooo... Video coming soon, better to see it fly by yourself.
Richard and Joe tried it, so maybe they can put their impressions of the model here.
I'll post the PDF plan later for the one who want to scratch build it.
For the lazy ones like me who prefer a "kit", I'll check for pricing, but should be around 55 to 60 euros/ea. I'll throw the depron and 6x6 wood for the tail and the plan for these parts in the lot.
-
That's great Fred!
I'm delighted to hear hear it worked out well.
A pity I couldn't be there to see it myself..... next time.
Aidan
-
Alright, managed to free myself for 5 minutes, and finished the page for the Quark on my website!
All here : http://www.gliderireland.net/index.php/slope-soaring-in-ireland/quarkepp
With the Plan in PDF for those who want to scratch build it :D
I might post something on RCG if I have time, but this page, is basically a condensed version of the conversation we had on the forum.
Anyway, in the mean time, enjoy! :D
-
Nice flying shots  :D
-
Hi Fred, for me the Quark was sublime, it has all the pedigree of being one plane to have in the hanger !
The Quark has also a very smooth flying pattern , which would make it very good for a beginners plane , but you must reduce the control surface rates lol
For in your face aerobatics I think 35mph winds would make the Quark come alive !
In 10mph winds she is smooth and accurate and for me a very good travel of lift in the light winds.
Sorry for breaking the elevator rods, I forgot how to fly on mode 2 lol
Richard
-
 Sorry Bill, forgot to mention you for the photos! Did the page really quick  I'll update that later.
And thanks for the shots!
Thanks Richard for the comments! Really appreciated, especially from a World Class Indoor Aerobat pilot!
Really pleased with the model, one or two things to change (elevator pushrod and more carbone in the wings), and that will be almost perfect :D
-
Oh and thanks to Andrew "I like them old" Wallace for supplying the new elevator joiner :D
-
no prob on the pics Fred, was only winding you up!
-
hey fred (he was touching me looking at you i think it was the hair  )
the new rod came from the man who broke it
i only brought it down to the flight line :D
maybe he was looking for a good looking man for his good lookin daughter :D
i look forward to meeting you again at sleive gallion in april
-
Well I enjoyed flying the quark so much that i went straight home and got stuck into finishing the minitoons!
Nearly there now. have to buy some tape tomorrow and she is ready.
A few little adjustments and you have a really fun machine that flies very well Fred and you can try whatever stunt you want case there's not a lot to break.
Good stuff!
-
hey joe
ha that sounds like a song
richard tells me you're coming to portrush to get a surf board
when are you coming up :D
-
Yeah maybe. If i order it the guy will post it for free but it's just another incentive to head up that direction. ya never know!
-
joe
if you're coming up tuesday's my day off :D
if the wind's are north or westerly we could go flyin
if not let me know any way and you can come and have your tea with us before you head back home :D
-
Hi Joe , you will be passing the Sperrins/Sleive Gallion on your way to the North Coast, or if the North winds are howling then we could all meet up at Andrews and head to Benevena on the Coast.
Have you a spare mini Toon ?
Please PM me as I need some fun.
Richard
-
Andrew/Richard.
Will stay in touch if I'm heading that way so ya can get the kettle on!
-
Finally got the minitoons ready to fly. not finished, but flyable. had no glass tape which i got but only one small roll. enough to do the wings but not the fuse. hope to try it tomorrow if the cliff down the road is working.

It’s certainly looking very smart Joe, lets hope it performs according to spec. How have you secured the wings to the fuse? :?:
I’ve a feeling the winds are going to be a little too northerly for your sand dunes tomorrow. :( Fancy a whiz over to the Big L.? :)

Health to fly !
Richard

Nice!
Looking good
-
Well i think i have another machine that is a "must bring" when flying. This is a seriously fun little glider. As you may have guessed. It flies great. How i need to finish it. Glue the servos so they don't move on every (crash)landing and decide on how to secure the wing. Tried to get some video but didn't turn out too well.
Big fun in a little glider :D :D :D :D
-
  Good stuff Joe! Looks like a good model to always have in the car so :D
Back to the Quark, and here is a short video of its maiden flights during the PSS week end :D
http://www.gliderireland.net/images/videos/Quark-epp.wmv
Enjoy :D
-
Guess who is going to be the owner of one of these ? (Merci Kiki! :D )
On another note, between 2 scale drawings, I have made a plan for a 1.2m and a 2m aerobat based on the Quark.
All wood construction for a change. They really sound like fun on paper, especially if that flies as good as the EPP one, and building should only take a couple of hours.
Stay tuned for more! :D
Fred (a bit on the silence side these days  )
-
what is it fred? any more details? has a 'cartoon-ish' look about it. do you know span, weight, etc?
-
Air100?
-
Hi Bill, Ger,
Nope, not a Air100, just a free inspired design... We call that RetroPR :D
WS is 2.2m and more as soon as I have it in my hands :D (Retroplane)
-
Hi all first time finding this site - how cool! I came across you guys from the Jivaro site where I discovered the Quark Mini... what an awesome plane! Good work, looks like it flies great!!
I've put a post on Slope Aerobatics for the Quark Mini: http://www.slopeaerobatics.com/2011/06/17/quark-mini/
I apologize for my complete ignorance of this forum to date, but with your permission I would really love to participate! I visited Ireland only once back in '98 but it's tied for first place (with Spain) for my favorite place across the pond! So much beautiful countryside and so many great slopes! The people are alright too :D :D :D

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the forum!
Recognise the Le Fish in the first post? I probably stole the picture from one of your posts on RCGroups.
Aidan

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the forum :D
Thanks again for posting the bits about the little Quark on the SlopeAerobatic website
-
Cheers guys thanks for the warm welcome! :)
We are doing some fun stuff with ultralightweight builds of my Le Fish and Spindrift designs. My friend Swiss Peter has been able to get the Spindrift down to a ridiculous 13.7oz (388g) and the Le Fish down to 17oz (480g). Both planes are in the 1.5m wingspan class. Here's a video from yesterday flying in some crossed up conditions at Ellwood Mesa here in Santa Barbara, CA:
http://vimeo.com/25336206
It's an exciting time for slope aerobatics!! There are cool projects going on all over the world, very thrilling for me!! ;)

Guys,
Anyone interrested in purchasing a "Limande" VTPR fuselage ?
This is a true Brittany style VTPR fuselage! For aerobatic afficionados!
Price is 100 euros for fuselage with all the instructions you need to do the model.
Let me know before Monday!!

And PM sent. :)

Annndddd Gone! :D
-
Curses! Foiled again :)
Fred, you know, if you can convince the French to produce them, you could open your own "French Connection" concession... just sayin'!
Steve
-
 Yes, but no :D
That would be giving up on the fun to get these things!
-
Bof! (as the French say)
It's more fun to get them when you've only got to go 300mi... when you've got to come from the other side of the world it's another matter altogether ;)
Steve
-
Hi Steve and welcome to Glider Ireland !
I like your Fish !!!!!!!
It has inspired me to blow the dust of my unbuilt Fish
One question, "did you go for the all moving tail/elevator ?
I have a couple of planes on the table to complete then the fish is next.
-
Large market maybe... but it all depends on what's on offer! ;)
Isn't a Ryanair flight to Brest pretty cheap, though, all things considered? :D
Steve

One question, "did you go for the all moving tail/elevator ?
Hi Richard! Thanks, glad you like the Le Fish, I'm so honored it has brought so much pleasure to so many people. And of course I like it pretty well myself :)
I am attempting my first Madslide-style elevator right now, on my new Swiss Fish-inspired build. Thread on RCG (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1460543) if you're interested. I hope to have it flyable in time for our July 9th VTPR rencontre here in Southern California.
Cheers!

http://vimeo.com/25995568
Some fun with the ultralightweight 388g / 1.5m Spindrift built by my friend Swiss Peter. Wind was only about 2-2.5 m/s... pretty marginal even for this plane!
Steve
-
Hi Steve , very nice video and cool plane.
Did you build your Le Fish this way ?
-
It is "in process" and must be finished by the weekend, in time for our first ever VTPR event here in Southern California!
I am updating a thread here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1460543
The one I am building will be a bit of a hybrid. It won't be quite as light as Peter's, but it will incorporate an all moving elevator (incidence integrale I believe the French call it) and I fully intend to do some Madslide -style flip-loops with it, along with the ultralightweight. Going to be fun!
Steve
-
Way to go Steve,
Please try to get some video and share it with us Irish folk.
It is summer here but we seem to be having more rain than we did in Winter :!:
Some California sun might warm us up a little. :)
We had our fist slope bash up in Northern Ireland this year.
It was dry but no winds.
So we ended up eating alot of hotdogs.
This is a short video of the event.
Turn the volume up and enjoy.

-
Here's a short video. I flew most of the day and therefore didn't get a ton of video... lol priorities ;)
http://vimeo.com/26238009
This was filmed by one of my new buddies John "Big Gas" Scahill who has a very cool Madslide-inspired Extra that was a lot of fun to fly. Madflight is starting to catch on here in Socal!
My "MadSwissFish" ended up building to 16.5oz / 470g... even lighter than Swiss Peter's! That was a surprise but I did trim the wings down to 1.5m (the Le Fish is currently shipping with 66" / 1.6m wings - something Jack did for the production model, I don't think it helps the design personally and it's easy enough to change ;) ). Anyways it's a fun plane but obviously had some trouble penetrating in the 13-15mph wind! The wing is stiff enough that I might try adding ballast, it's too early to say.
Also, I did manage to get a video of Dawson Henderson flying his solo session. (We did 2min solo sessions towards the end of the day for each pilot to show off his skills... really fun!) Dawson's style is really smooth and flowing and I think this video does a good job of showing it. He got two grass drags, one in the beginning and one towards the end - great pilot :)

There’s some pretty impressive flying there Steve  including the ‘Back Flips’ which 4 axis flying (Vive la France) is famous for.
Very cleaver stuff….. :D
But I have a question :?: . What are the “grass drags” that you refer to Dawson doing?
Keith
-
The first one is at 0:21... see how his tail skids sideways? That's because he's drug the whole top if the plane and fin through the grass, inverted... and he's got enough mass that he sideslips through it and out.
Second one is at 1:18. He's upright but same thing... whacks it through the grass and it causes the whole plane to skid sideways.
Touching the grass and/or ground with belly, fin, and wingtip is a big part of the fun of VTPR flying. There are a lot of different ways to do it, all of them cool :)
Some recent ones, including a tip drag that I'm quite proud of at the end, in this video: http://vimeo.com/25995568

Talking about VTPR, here is the RetroPR!
Retro look, but fully VTPR capable machine. Can't remember the name of the glider, but anyway, I brught back one for me! :D

And finally, I brought back some other machines, I'll do some photos tonight if I have a minute.
But basically, that barelly fit in my car! And I have a big car! :P :D :D

Here is a video from Arnaud from France, who built a Quark Mini from my plan / Kit.
AUW is 700Grs, even lighter than mine!
This is the maiden flight in a 15km/h wind.
Happy camper! :D

I also have the mold with me. And no Keith, the fuselage will not fit in your car! (that's 2.4m long)
Sooooo... Who can cut me wings? :D
Fred - Who really have to do some gardening!
-
Sod the gardening. Get that plane in the air! :D
My word, that is one BIG fuse. 8) Yes, it definitely wont fit in my little car. :(
Maybe I should get a trailer, or an oversize roof rack, or buy a van………Knowing me, I’ll probably just keep dreaming
K.

Stop dreaming, buy a roof rack!

:D They do cheap roof racks in Aldi or Lidl, now or soon. Have a look at their websites :D
You just have to make a box, and off you go :D
-
Sooooo... Who can cut me wings? :D
I can still cut the old fashioned way, using templates and a drop arm cutter. Working 4 nights a week at the minute as one of the other guys is on hols, so progress stopped on my CNC. Is Joe still in the country?
-
Is your new fuz a "Toons"?
-
Hey Bill,
No, even better (and bigger :P ), it's a Kostez.

That Kostez is very impressive. The pilot was pretty good too!!
You’ll find that a hard act to follow Fred. :P I’m expecting great things from you……..don’t let me down :D

Hey Steve, thanks.
Yeah, that was nice to see Thierry and Ronan for some flying. The Limande is amazing to fly, and the Kostez.. well, it's huge!
I'm really proud to be friend with these guys!
By the way, I have a few good news for you for your visit in Britany! I'll do a mail with all the infos I have shortly.

hello fred
oui fred c'ets sur la pente ou nous etions il y a 15 jours tres bien
Yes fred it ets on the slope or we were 15 days ago tres indeed
-
Awesome Fred, thank you very much!!
We got a nice little video yesterday, it was Michael Richter (of Dream-Flight), Swiss Peter and myself. Peter had flown 7 hours straight the day before so was happy to take a break and do some filming. The wind was very light but we had a lovely time all the same with our ultralightweight planes :)
http://vimeo.com/26853909
Steve
-
tres belle video Steve
-
Thank you! We are really having a lot of fun with these. I promise to bring one with me to France when we come next year!! To fly at Menez-Hom would be great, but to fly with a bunch of French VTPR pilots would be a dream come true!! :)
Steve
-
No concerns(marigolds) Steve I think that we have to exchange a lot because someone of us stagnates of the other advance and of the other pilot(driver) cannot reach the VTPR because he(it) does not arrange attractive flat slope with the grass very fat as in Brittany this says we we water(spray) quite days for the pleasure of the salmons of our wings....

Tres bien, Thierry! :)

I am going to be publishing all of the changes we have made so far to the Le Fish and making the plan available as both PDF and DWG/DXF on SlopeAerobatics. My goal is only, and always, to help promote this hobby and enable others to enjoy this kind of flying. I feel this is the most essential part of our hobby, the joy of flying and the camaraderie of friends.
As you can see the Le Fish as we are flying it in this moment is a blend of many influences, including the MiniToons (of course!), the Voltij, the Madslide, the Swift S-1, and the Alula. I tried to take what I felt were the best attributes of a number of designs which I admired and combine them into one new design that would offer a joyful performance, and now that my friend Peter has shown us how to make them so light, my dream has been realized.
But any design can be improved! For me, the addition of the Madslide elevator (incidence integrale) combined with the ultralightweight building technique is the key which unlocks a truly new door of performance. Because of the Madslide stabilizer, we can finally do truly new things on the slope, with a new imagination. This is just beginning and I feel there is much to learn. I hope to find people who want to come on the journey with me!! :)
A+

Certainly it’s ‘Hat’s Off’ to the pilots. Very cleaver flying. As always, skilled pilots make it look soooooooo easy!
A subjective question I know, but just how strong are those models. I’d imagine if they hit the ground they’d pretty much be written off, hu? :!:
Do you guys fly in strong wind conditions as well, or is it mostly the light stuff you enjoy?
Keith
-
...without ballast
Just like any other sloper really. It's still early days... almost anything is possible :)

A new one... Swiss Peter and I flying a duet at Ellwood. A single uncut take:

Fred - Who really have to do some gardening!
Hi Fred
Long time no speekee !!
I've been busy/distracted with life issues, new F3A project.etc.
Anyway what is the plan for 'the beast' in the pic ??
Brian
-
Hey Brian,
Welcome back!
Well, a little mouse told me the other day that 2 fuselages are soon to be born up north!
Wings should be hopefully with us next week or so (fingers crossed on that one!).
So, getting there, nice winter project! :D
So, when are we going to see you at the slope again?
-
Hi Fred,
About a week after you supply me with one of those 'beasts' if that is possible.
Cost agreed of course ??
That thing really gets my juices flowing.
Regardless I will get out to join you all in the near future.
I got very distracted by a new F3A project and getting our new flying site ready (250+hours).
Just about all done now.
Keith is helping with some photos so watch the F3A section.

Got 1/2 an hour to go through my mails to clean up the mess and answer a few hundred of them!
Got this, from a friend in Germany.
The build is brilliant! So simple and yet fantastic, and they managed to get a good looking machine out of Depron!
Glider name is Aroso :
Kit :
And the glider :
No more information, if there is a plan available, or if we can buy the kit, but I have asked :D
Hmmm, like the build, and I have sheets of Depron doing nothing!
-
bet that weighs next to nothing! Should be a real light wind model :D
-
So cute this micro glider.
You sold it??
-
Howdy Air One! :D
Not my glider, only received a mail with photos of this glider.
No more information apart it is made of 3mm depron, but I think the build looks great! I like the way he did the fuselage, neat and simple for a very good looking result for a model made of depron :D

Hi Fred,
Have you got any epp quark kits? Would like one.
John.
-
Min Quark has Flown
Andrew is of line at the moment so he asked me to update you all on his maiden of the mini Quark.
In his words
"bloody Brilliant"
Andrew flew the Quark on Sunday morning on the North Coast of Ireland.
He said for a small plane it is rock solid and he was frightened by the roll rate.
From launch the wee Quark went straight out and away over the edge of Binevenagh.
Andrew said if the Big Quark is half as good as the mini it will be a must have glider.
Fred , Andrew passes on his love and sayes a big THANKS for his mini Quark
-
Glad the Quark is performing well. I'd half expected a fully produced video from you Richard. Oh well, Hope springs eternal.
That is one Corker of a slope! :D With lovely grass landing areas as well.
By the shadows I’d say it faces NW, am I right? How long does it take to get there from Moneymore?
(I think you N.I. guys are greedy. You hog all the best slopes and keep them to yourselves! )
K.
-
Hi Keith, it takes about 40min from Moneymore, and yes it is North and west slopes with another south slope on the back.
As yet I have had no time to do a video, as JP and Andrew work when I am free.
Plus its cold and I am old and suffer alot in the cold weather, too many birthdays lol
Andrew and John are really pleased with their Quarks, if I can get myself out into the shed maybe another Quark will appear soon.
Carbon spares should be here this week.
It was difficult to get spares at 10mm o/d TUBE.

Hi all,
Sorry for the long silence, things are finally geting quiet at work! :!:
Well done again on the maiden flight of the Micro Quark Andrew !
And.... WHAT IS THAT SLOPE???????!!!! Ok, I want to fly there!!
So, if I underatnd, that is roughly 1h40 from my house right? :?:
That need investigation! :D
Anyway, good that you like your Quarks  Mr Boyd, where is yours?? :-s Stop flying planes, they are all toys! :P
-
Oh by the way, photos, videos? :?: :D
-
Hi Fred, Andrew is having PC problems so I have to reply,
The slope is Benevenagh, these are Andrews closest slopes the slope is a long ridge North and west facing with a south slope at the back.
For you it would be about a 2hr 40min drive :)
We fly here during the summer with Andrew and if the winds are northerly we also fly ofF the beach.
Our 2011 Rathlin trip was a fantastic experiance with flying on Rathlin on the Saturday and then Benevenagh on Sunday.
I have a few more trips for the boys for 2012
White park bay, Fairhead and some of the slopes over looking Murlough Bay and Cushendun !

Very good!
Thanks Richard!
Next summer then! :D

Fred, you are welcome to come up anytime !!!!!!!!
Just give me a buzz and I can let you know the weather.
We could make a winter weekend of it ( flying and beer drinking)
Wine is for women and Keith

The Quark Mini Saga continue!
We are well over 100 of these build now, and I get the occasional photo from time to time.
This one, built by Martin in Brittany, did its first flight yesterday.. And love it! :D
It is built like John's one, in extruded foam, not EPP. And admire the colour scheme! :D
Built straigh off the plan, the only modification was to create a box, in 5mm plywood around the wing joiner tube in the fuselage (I think John had the issue of the tube crushing the foam...)
Specs :
-- 4 servos Protronik 9g 6452MG
-- 1 5 cells battery 900 mah
-- 5ch Jeti receiver
AUW : 806grs
He is now testing fligt phases etc :D
Another 3 are being build this week, with TP profile, and one with wing incidence. I will let you know how these ones are going.
Ok, I go back in the garage finishing the plug for the 3mtrs one! :D
-
OK, have to bring back that one from the dead! :D
Looks like the Quark EPP still have aficionados, this time, from the North Sea borders, with Jens, who report some great flying with his Quark Mini EPP
