Title: Sloping fun, show your pictures and videos !!!!!
Post by: Richard Boyd on May 31, 2010, 22:10:32 PM
Today May Bank Holiday Monday, Bill and John P visited me on the local slope at Moneymore.
Winds were really blowing and a great days flying was had by all.

Video practise from John Pearson, of my little Fox in high winds.

I'm just glad I dropped it on the deck and didn't wipe us all out!

Where's the rest of the video footage? Would love to see the little "love" tap I gave Johns Phase 6!

Glad you guys made good use of your bank holiday.  Can’t beat a good spot of flying real planes. :D

Richard, it seems from that little video that you were having difficulty distinguishing which is right way up, and which is inverted. Remind me to give you some lessons when we next meet!!

And a dead madslide? Where?, I couldn’t see it. I WANT TO SEE A BROKEN MUDSLIDE! Not that I enjoy such things of course. Just that I have a morbid curiosity. (It pleases me to know that I’m not the only one who “bends” ‘em :!: )

Oh dear,…………..commiserations Bill.
One of my Phase 6's went nose in from about 500 feet when the solder on the elevator bell crank gave out in mid flight.

Your wings don’t look too bad. Will you build another fuse’ :?: ?

wings split across the middle. Might be able to put a spar in it. Not sure whether to build a new fuz or build the bigger version.

For the few minutes it flew it was quite nice! It was my usual built like a brick shi****e and way too heavy, so a lighter version would probably fly better :?:

Yeah, big wheels! Great to fly from anywhere !
Bored with a plane after roughly 2 minutes, but that little thing is..errr.. fun!
Have tow hook, so good to tow the 2m thermal ships range.

And yes... Did put a video camera on it  :P  No boobs (must love France for that!) but one of the most boring/useless aerial video ever (well, like all aerial videos really...)... If I have 2 minutes, I might do a best of... Shaking landscape best of, not going to be easy !

Hi fellow slope rebels

Well, Richard and I took to the slopes today on Moneymore for a spot of flying in a respectable 40mph+ winds. The two phase 6's flew well, but a rough landing damaged Richard's, therefore, according to the Ralf Harris song, 'there's room on my phase 6 for two' so we took turns in flying the other model. A Great day was had by all. oh yes we will be back flying tomorrow with Wild Bill, winds 20mph+ forcast. weeeeeee!!!

What a day Mr. Pearson ! Flying on the smallest slope on the mountain yet it has some of the best lift.
Looking at your pictures has greatly effected me ! Am I really that old lol ?
Yesterday I felt like a teenager mmmmmmm !
Chuckle Brothers take to the air today , let the fun begin !
Andrew is gigging tonite so is unable to join the fun, and Kees has gone AWOL in his new camper van.
Its just us hardcore flyers today !

Good to see there is still some activity in Ireland while most of the lads are off in Germany.

I too was flying my Phase 6 yesterday. (In fact I’ve come to regard the Phase 6 as the bench mark to asses other models by. For me it’s the Standard model)
I’ve moved the CoG back an inch on mine. Now she’s very agile but a little tricky to land, think I’ve gone a bit too far. :!:

Just to amend you’re your last slogan John, “Real men fly slope aerobaticsSo here’s a challenge for you. When you go flying today how about photo’ing some close in passes with the plane inverted? :D

Go ON! Give it a try! 8)

Your wish is my command Keith, up side down, no problem, O.K. no problem for Richard, he's the good pilot !!! We had another great day on the slopes, this time wind speeds 20mph and super lift. Wild Bill flew so much that his tranny when into the red (low power), he even got the SU25 into the air, but damaged it on a down wind landing. Richard put the little Fox through it's paces, and for you Keith, yes inverted close in passes, this small glider just gets better and better with every flight. I flew the phase 6 and even took the small B52 up for a couple of bombing runs along the slope, and yes I to flew a couple of low passes  keith, except my passes ended up at the bottom of the slope!!

More pics from the days activities:

In case you missed it Keith, we did another inverted low pass just for you!!

I think the other lads have some video and pics coming soon!!

A-Haar, yes very good guys. Take a well earned pat on the back the lot of you.
When I said a close in low pass I actually meant parallel to the slope not perpendicular to it, but very well done none the less. Now let’s see it done with a phase 6!  :D ( The fox has a symmetric wing I believe). The key, I’ve found, ( after many repair jobs) is SPEED. I put the plane into a dive from a great height while flying parrallel to the slope,  and then just push the stick forward and hold it there, at the end of the pass do a quarter roll and take the plane out into the lift again. Like I said, the key is converting height into speed

Doesn’t it feel good when you go home with all models airworthy (apart poor Bill’s SU25) and the tranny flashing red at you. 8)

Have to admit I’m getting a little worried about Richard. :?:  First I find him flashing his naked legs on the forum. Now I see him lying on his back ostensibly “talking” to his windrider Fox! I think he’s a good pilot but just a bit ‘Kinky’

Glad you all enjoyed your two days. :D

Great day on the hill. The Frogfoot is in a couple of pieces, but they'll glue back together with no problems. No worries there.

Maidened a home brew 60" V tail model too. It flew very well, crisp turns, easily controlled and FAAAST   Richard loved the whistle from it as it went past.

Good flying in good company. Can't think of a better way to spend Saturday afternoon

Hi Icewind, the Fox is by windrider, made from bouncy EPP and it flys fantastic.
I used tape to strenghten the winds and only glue used was to attach the elevator ! Total weight with battery is 437g !
I used a standard servo for the elevator , Hitec 55 for rudder and EMAX ES08MA metal geared servos for the ailerons. The emax es08 are the best small budget servo I have ever used. and check the price http://www.expressfly.org.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=281

Well, I’m glad to hear you’re in love with your little Fox, Richard. Personally I couldn’t get on with mine at all. I had it for about a month and then threw it away. :(
I found she only flew in light conditions and wasn’t very aerobatic. I even cut out a little hole for some ballast   but that didn’t improve her ability to penetrate into the wind  …… May be I should have taped the wings,…………Ed said he did the same with his and it improved it's performance. Never mind, I think I lack the necessary finesse on the sticks. I’m bit of a more “Blood & Guts” type flyer.  (It’s easier that way.)

The B52 looks great in the air John :D  and well done to Bill for his “Homebrewed” V tail job.

Having recently got myself a V tailed model I have to admit they do seem to fly that bit faster than cross tail ones.
I don’t know if there is any science to substantiate that statement, or whether it’s all subjective. :?:
Does anyone know any facts on the matter? Does a plane with a ‘V’ tail fly faster than the same plane with a ‘+’ tail???..............  Fred, any ideas?

Hi Keith I have read lots of similar comments about the Windrider Fox. i can only tell you how my baby flys , and that it is an amazing little plane.
I now have my CG set at 2 1/4" back and she is so aerobatic, roll rates are super, I even managed an inverted flat spin with her yesterday. A simple pull on the elevator and she recovered beautifully. Snaps etc. are simple as are spins. All that for £60 !

I guess that your experience is virtually the same as my thoughts were on a phase 6 !
My 6 flys crap ! then I got a flight with Johns 6 on Friday , what a fantastic aerobatic plane.

John and I really should apologise to Richard and his poor beaten upon Fox. First I clipped him,  (model recovered and flewn on), then John hit him and sliced through his aerial dumping the model in the bog.

Poor Richard was beginnning to think it was an EPP free slope!!

Richard,
I was interested to hear your comments, re; Fox / Phase 6, thanks.

Just on the matter of your Phase 6,………I only saw your model once and I can’t remember if it has the “Sport” (Semi-symmetrical) or “Professional” (Fully symmetrical) wing.

I’ve never had a “Professional” winged model but I’m told they are not very enjoyable to fly.

Out of curiosity, which has your plane got?

K.
Title: Sloping fun, show your pictures and videos !!!!!
Post by: billscottni on July 18, 2010, 12:29:57 PM
Keith, with regards to V & T tail models being faster it's to do with parasitic and "junction" drag. Basically a T and a V have fewer junctions with the fuz than a + tail draw a V, T & + and you'll see what I mean.

There are trade offs however. Booms need to be stronger for a T and they frequently crack just ahead of the fin in anything but a perfect landing. V tails can be hard to set up as there's always a bit of coupling between rudder and elevator.

If you look at the F3f/b scene, there's a move back to + tails
Title: Sloping fun, show your pictures and videos !!!!!
Post by: Happy Days on July 18, 2010, 12:53:54 PM
Thanks Bill,

When you say ‘parasitic’ drag I assume you mean ‘Form’ drag. :?:  I’ve always understood that parasitic drag was created by items that project into the airflow that are not directly used for flight. (Undercarriage, antennas, pitot tubes, ect.)
Thanks for the information.

So the big boys are moving back to cross tails are they? Well, “There’s nothing new under the sun!”

Hi Keith , yes the phase 6 is the professional plane.
It flys a world apart from Johns 6.
I am now back at 130mm CG and it now shows a little more neutral in inverted flight , dive test is about as good as I can get it.
Rolls are slow and lift is so bad.
If you want to just go up and down the lift then it is ok but for me it is totally crap.

Richard

Hey Richard,

Shame your’s is the full symmetric wing. :(  I’ve never heard a good word spoken about them.

Just for your info, Chris Foss sells separate wings for the Phase 6, so you could buy a semi symmetric wing and fit it to your fus. You’d have much more fun with the plane then. :)
I don’t know how much the wings are, the entire model is only about £80.

As a further point, if you did get another wing you could build it into a full house wing. :D  Separate flaps for crow braking and light conditions, combined flaps/aileron mixing for aerobatic fun in stronger conditions.

Just a thought, ol’ fruit.

Much appreciated the info provided.
Indeed it seems a great flyer, I found two version e-powered or pure glider. But I'd go for the pure glider version.

Been EPP and wing detachable (right??) makes it perfect for me.
It's about time I put aside the ones I try to build from scratch and never fly. ( Not sure why  8) )
So I can move to the balsa glider like the big boys in the slope. :)

Also thanks for the tip on the servos, for a metal gear servo that price seem very good. I was using Hextronik MG-14 on the same specs and price range but very often you find some that jitters...

Hi Nando, If you need questions answered please feel free to give me a shout and ask away.
The only thing I would have changed in my build was to sand of the injecting moulding nipples that are on the wings and elevator etc. I covered mine with 2" cross weave fiber tape and this left the wings/ailerons and elevator super stiff. No need to embed carbon or anything like that.
Use a good quality standard servo for your elevator.
Oh and do add the rudder, use a emax servo or any good quality micro servo that you have in the workshop.
I didnot glue the Fox together the tape holds the fuse in one piece.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the help.
I'm definetly thinking about it, I found one person selling one in Portugal already fully built. With rudder built as well and re-enforced (so far I'm not sure exactly wht they mean by this)
It looks perfect the only problem may be the servos they used HXT900 for all surfaces and I'd defiently go and change them.
So I might get it in a couple of weeks, if not I';ll get a new and build it like you said using fiber tape.

I'm still not 100% sure about this but, are the wings removable?
I can't imagine carrying around a 1.6Mt "cross".

Thanks,
Nando

Thanks for the offer!

@Richard, excellent news! Until I get a van the best I can get is removable wings. Where do you guys use to fly up north? I've seen on the photos and the places look great, specially the sea views.

Hi Nando, now you have the Fox get flying and have fun.
The pictures of the coastal area we fly is called Downhill beach on the North Coast, 5 minutes from the beach is the mountain which is also a brilliant place to slope (west, north and south slopes). We also fly at Slieve Galllion which is about 25 minutes drive for me , best slopes and no walking or hikes.
With help from Bill and John we intend to arrange a day or two flying so our friends from Glider Ireland can come visit us.
If you or anyone else wants to visit and fly up North I will be more than happy to meet you and show you around.
Andrew was on the North Coast yesterday and has been making me very jealous lol. I had my house work to do  :!:   if the cloud base lifts today I just might escape to the mountain.

Great to hear we have interest in flying up North, now to secure a date !
Keith , as for house work,  all I do is move the planes from one room to the next one lol . I have 9 indoor planes in my bedroom and the Blasters and other gliders get the comfort of the living room, The park flyers are in the kids room, I removed  them at the weekends when the children visit, my bigger planes are in the workshop at dads house and my best planes are in my dads spare room lol.
Dusting can be a pain !

Title: Fying off Moneymore
Post by: JohnPearson on August 14, 2010, 21:30:40 PM
Hi guys

Well, we had Ed up north today flying off Moneymore mountain. The wind was not great and Richard and myself found it hard going, keeping the vectors flying in the low lift, however Ed had no problems at all with his F3F model and a super carbon glider, 'sorry Ed I have forgotten the name!'. Today we had a selection of para gliders flying off the same slope, funny, even with the whole slope to fly off, and an agreement between us and them to fly in our own airspace, we had to land a few times due to our fellow gilding neighbours flying low over us. Overall we had a great day, and I think Ed will be back, looking at the smile on his face.

Sorry I couldn't make it out guys. My back is really playing up at the minute and the thought of an hour in the car and then bouncing round a hill wasn't the nicest

Glad you enjoyed our little hill Ed and hopefully next year we'll try and run a couple of events on it  :?:

John and Richard,
Big thanks guy`s for a craicen afternoon on Moneymore, what a spot you have there Lads. Great to have a hill that pretty much covers most wind directions, very handy indeed. Unfortunately the weather wasn't the best but it wasn't long for me to appreciate what these slopes are capable of producing lift wise even on an average day. Very impressed all the same. Even in the light conditions there was some great lift/thermals and plenty of craic from the boy`s. Out of the two mouldies I brought the Pace VXH was the one that was preforming the best, strange as it was designed primarily as a DSing ship! At one stage though the wind came in and all three of us had about 5 mins of some great flying, lots of magic moudie whistle and big smiles followed fairly quickly:D Good to see the Vectors in their element.  Sorry Bill you couldn't make it on Saturday, real shame but hope you get that back mended in time for the next Slope session.
I had such a great time on Saturday fellas thanks again for looking after me so well, it wont be long before im back for more Nordie Slope Soaring thats for sure.

All I can say is a big thanks to ED for traveling up to Slieve Gallion. I really enjoyed the days crack and well Eds planes were awesome in the very light winds.
Thanks also for the tips and mixes Ed, I have them set in the Vector and the ballast is making her dance in the skys over Moneymore
I gave her a wee knock on Wednesday but she is repaired and ready to rock n roll again.

May the North winds blow !

Title: New sloping sites on the Sperrins
Post by: Richard Boyd on August 23, 2010, 08:04:04 AM
On Saturday both John and myself headed up to Slieve Gallion and to our surprise winds were hitting from the South and this left us with very little lift on the south easterly slope. We did manage a few flights but it was very hard work.
Yesterday (Sunday) I ended up free for the day so I went in search of a Southerly slope on the Sperrins. Here are a few pics of slopes I found with very easy excess ! for us old folk lol.
As you will see winds were very light but I still managed to have a few flights.

The Sperrins really are a place of outstanding beauty.
I was in my bed at 7.30 pm completely wrecked after the evening on the mountains.

While John and some of the others were playing in the fog on Slieve Gallion, some of the NIMSA and East Antrim members met at the Bowl in sunshine and 18 - 25 mph winds.

Yes, a good day Bill :D ………….the little Fox seemed to have a slight problem penetrating into the wind. I had the same prob. with mine.

Good looking slope. I’m quite envious, don’t have much to fly here in easterly winds apart from some sand dunes.
Lucky ol’ you

The fox did have a bit of trouble, but it was blowing about 20 at that point.
I would think in a 10-12mph wind it would be OK  :?:

We have quite a few good Easterly slopes, it's other winds we struggle a bit with. Slieve Gallion covers most, but come the winter it may be a bit difficult to get to the top!

Your easterly slope isn't bad, I flew it last year at Retroplane.

Hello gentlemen, Looks like our friends in NIMSA also had a fantastic day on the Antrim Hills !
The low cloud over the Sperrin Mountains cleared up after lunch and we enjoyed 4 hours of endless flying on the smaller east slope.
Andrews habby stole the show ! what a stunning looking and flying glider. Johns £20 bargain flew a treat and Karl let everyone fly his bullet, even Andrew flew it and he is mode 2 !
I had another prang with my Vector so its back in the sick bay awaiting glue.
The winds were rocking and the Legend was rolling his Flamingo !
All in all a great days fun.
I have a bit of footage edited just waiting the rendering process and then what ever time Youtube takes to clear it. Hopefully it will be up and running tonight.
Uncle Keith, please be gentle on me as I am learning !  :D

It might be in how you're capturing to your pc. I tend to  capture as an AVI file which gives best quality to work with.

But...........I am working with an old Hi8 camera of at least 15 years old!

Looks like you had more wid than we did too

Looks like you guys had your hands full in the wind,…….plenty of lift. :D  (Just the way I like it.) Did anybody try any racing? And who won the combat?

Glad there was no damage to “The one that got away” How many times have we all had that happen at some point. Beautiful looking model, it’d have been a shame had it got damaged. :(
Shame about the low cloud but at least you made the best of it.

High pressure over Ireland for the next few days  ………..I’m looking forward to the winter gales. (I’d look forward to them all the more if I had a Mini-Toon to fly in them! :!: )

As for the video Richard

I thought it flowed quite nicely, on screen text helped explain what was happening, and it had a title and an ending.
Pity about the poor light, most camcorders have trouble recording fast objects in low light.
Technical merit…………6/10
Artistic Interpretation……6 /10
Well done!

Yea,’ very entertaining vid. :D

I’m left thinking, “How did the rc pilot get on the ground to land the glider while the balloon was still airborne? :?:  Or was that a different balloon in shot when the glider was landed?”

Interesting that the camera on the wing tip of the glider didn’t seem to cause any trouble to the gliders’ flight.

Thanks for posting it Fred.  (Where do you find all these videos?) (Spend all day watching You Tube I s’pose :P )
