Okay, so who’s up for a spot of PSS and sport gliding on the Big L this weekend??? :?:
Come along, don’t be shy, surely everyone must be suffering with withdrawal symptoms after this horrendous winter.
Looks like there will be a good blow on the south slope on Saturday, and then a more gentle ’Floating’ kinda day on the west slope on Sunday. Something for everyone over the weekend 8)
I’ll be there from about 11.00 on Saturday. Who else will I meet there???
Little Keith
-
Sorry Keith, I'll be otherwise occupied this weekend recovering from surgery  :?
-
sorry keith too early in the year for me difficult getting the time off work :( but i've two days booked off in september :D
-
ditto recovering from knee surgery keith. hope those who do go have a great week end
-
Oh my goodness  !!! At this rate I shall be flying on my own,…..again!
Well good luck with the surgery Bill, seems we haven’t seen you on the Big L for years, and Gerry, you take care of those knees. The injury probably came from all that praying you do. (“ God. Please let me land this plane in one piece”)
And as for Andrews’ claim that he‘ll be working,……pretty poor one that Andy,…Life is about priorities. (Personally, I always thought work as a greatly overrated pastime. ) Hopefully we’ll see the three of you in the Autumn. 8)
Okay, so with our ranks greatly depleted who IS going to turn up?
LK.
-
I'll be there (and the only thing that will stop me getting up there, would be 2 metres of snow!).
The PSS event, we never really go over 10~15 pilots as this is only the start of the season, and it's still very chilly out there!
Anyway, even when it's pouring rain and the meeting cancelled, we still managed to be 6 the last time, so I guess we can't go lower! :D
I'll try to be there early, around 9am, with a car full of gliders. A few first flights to be done, and I have decided to bring gliders that I haven't flown in a while for a change! :D
Looking forward to meet you all! :D
-
9am, ah fred, 9 am in bunclody for coffee maybe...... :o
-
Why not actually :)
Text me when you get there, I stop for a coffee if I'm around :)
-
Don't worry keith me and Stephen will be there :-)
-
Don't worry keith me and Stephen will be there :-)
Yeah, I know,...that's what I'm worried about
So, Fred and Ralph as well as Big Keith & Stephen,......Five, well that's a start.
JP are you going to join us? After all PSS is just 'up your street' isn't it?
Who else intends to join our happy throng?
-
Yes Keith JP and Roisin are going this weekend I was talkin to them yesterday :D
-
Ah, so with JP & Roisin that makes a total of six and a half!
Getting better all the time
How about some of the newbies?,....Patrick and Brendan, gonna show your faces lads? It'll be a good chance to learn from the 'Masters'
(And I'll be there as well :P )
LK.
-
Hi Lads,
I'll only get down on Sunday, some family priorities came up.
I might get down late Saturday if I can get away
Bill keep her lit there mate, we're rooting for you hope all goes well.
Stephen
-
have a great day tomorrow lads just wish i could be there :D
see you all in september 8)
-
Thanks Andrew :D
Car packed, a few batteries are charging... Looks like I will finish a glider or two at the slope or at the B&B tomorrow!
-
Hi all,
Hope to make it down tomorrow, family permitting!
Looking forward to catching up with you all then,
ed
-
God Ed, long time no see!
Hope you will be able to make it tomorrow, will be good to catch up :)
-
rain in bunclody and I don't want to get up!
oh well, see you in a bit then.....
-
You are already there??
-
quite breezy. cold and hill covered in cloud. where is keith with the up to dste forecast?
-
Hi lads. Do u think it will go ahead for tomorrow. Will u be posting your decision here. Adrian.
-
Hi Adrian, the answer to both your questions is yes. :D
There were about 10 pilots up there today, with calmer conditions predicted for tomorrow I should think there will be about a dozen or more.
Big Keith, Stephen & myself (Little Keith) intend to be there from about 10.30. The forecast is for more southerly winds tomorrow so we’ll be parked up at Nine Stones car park.
Will you be joining us?
LK
-
At the pub :)
Keith, in total, we were 16 pilots today :)
100km/h winds on top of the mountain, very very challenging conditions! But nothing broken :)
Hopefully, tomorrow should be more civilised.
Plan is to get up there early in the morning.
-
et les photos

Yes I am hoping to get there. fingers crossed for the weather. Adrian.
-
Well, if any of your are laying in your beds wondering if you might take to the Big L today my advise to you is to stay in bed for the next hour at least!
The mountain and its associated hills are all completely covered in cloud. :(
For those who are interested; the wind at the moment is 20K gusting 25Kph from the SSW which means it is flyable,….. when we have visibility.
L.K.
-
On our way soon. Light drizzle at the b&b at the moment.
-
Hi to one and all ,,,, hope you are all having a great weekend on the slopes
Sorry I was unable to attend but my heart is with you
Looking forward to some fotos
-
Back home about 15 minutes ago!
I'll be short (more tomorrow), but many thanks for everybody for coming
16 yesterday, 15 today, good chat and banter (and coffees, cakes, sandwishes...no BBQ Noel!! :P , but the wind let us down today  Oh, and did I mentioned low clouds?
But that was good to see that, despite the conditions, lots of people travelled from around the country. Lots of new faces too
Anyway, more tomorrow :D
-
The wind gods did not smile on us this weekend. Gusting to 100kph on Saturday tailing off to almost dead calm by Sunday afternoon. This fact combined with low cloud on both days prohibited virtually all flying apart from a couple of mad fools who tried to fly in both extremes. :P
I don’t really understand why the conditions were so poor, I promised the Almighty I’d be good for the rest of the year if he gave us flyable weather this weekend. Perhaps he didn’t believe me. (Can’t say I blame him  )
Freds’ head count says 16 pilots on Saturday and 15 on Sunday. It was good to see so many in such conditions, I wonder how many would have been there had the weather been sunny with a breeze straight on to the slopes! These glide-ins are becoming ever more popular. I can remember when even in good conditions there was only 4 or 5 pilots on the slope of Big L. Could this increase in numbers be due to my magnetic personality perhaps? :D NO,………..I don’t think so either. So maybe slope soaring is experiencing a ‘renaissance‘,…..let’s hope so.
Memorable events for me this glide-in? Fred & JP flying a little foamy Messerschmitt 109 off the top of the south slope in winds of 100K, (between brakes in the cloud.) Loads of new enthusiastic faces, eager to try their hand at piloting gliders. Meeting up with some ‘older’ faces to catch up on events. And on Sunday trying to scratch around to find some lift while knowing that all that really awaited me was a long walk to recover a downed model. (All say Arrrrrrr…..)
Here a a few picies I took on Sunday from the West slope. Others will have more to follow.
Ralph is always 'good for a laugh'. Love the new "Hair Net"
This is Fred making a valiant attempt to fly a model with virtually no lift around. The result was inevitable,…Gravity always wins!
John “Fireballs” & friend, (Sorry I can’t remember his name) had to resort to extreme measures by ‘cheating’ with a powered model!
Well, at least it flew! :D

Incidentally lads, if any of you have any ‘Brownie Points’ left over from last weekend then this weekend the forecast is good for all three days of the long weekend on the Big L. And mild temps too! :)
Maybe some of the ‘Local Crowd’ might like to meet up there? :D
Just thought I’d mention it. (Of course it could change by the weekend.)

Hi All
Well I got home in the end, had to stay a few more days at moss house, until my car was fixed. I broke a spring and the top end of the Shock on the front drivers side wheel, due to a big pot hole on Saturday. I would like to thank Ralph and fred for all there help and to little Keith, who taxied me around on Monday looking for car parts, also to the guys at james tomkins garage in Gory, who worked on the car and got me back on the road.
O.k. well apart from the expensive car problems, the weather did not part ball for us on both days, however, the craic was great and it was nice to meet up with some old friends and make some new friends as well. The winds on Saturday hit over 100km/hr on the top of the south slope, and of course, there were some this did not stop us trying to fly in the wind!!!!
Ralph and myself try to get onto the top of the slope!
Well if we can not fly gliders, lets try body gliding!!

looping fred gets into the air
Fred and I managed to fly the wee ME 109 PSS glider in 100km/hr winds :?: :?:
After the madness on the slope, we came together for a group photo, great turn out for the saturday event 16 pilots.
Fred and Ralph have another go at flying off the west slope, but no joy :!:
Ed and I tried a PSS ME 262 but again no joy, back to the drawing board with this model.
Roisin my good wife, had a great dinner ready for us at Moss house on Saturday night and even provided a few toy gliders to keep us amused
So not much flying, but a good laugh and great company, se you all in September.

I would love to get down on Saturday to try out a bit of slope soaring (if new people are welcome) and you think an izicraft would suit the conditions.
-
Yes you’ll be welcome jumbo, after all we are all newcomers, just that some of us are less new than others!
Now I have to say I don’t know much about ‘Izicraft’ I think they’re powered high wing trainers aren’t they? (At least that’s what mr google tells me.) I wouldn’t have thought an Izicraft would be particularly appropriate for slope soaring. I have an old combat wing that I let newbies try slope soaring with but unfortunately it got broken last Saturday while “flying” in those very strong winds which were really far too strong for sensible flying. ( But then I’m not very sensible. )
If you live in Carlow why don’t you pop up to the Big L anyway and see if sloping is something you might like to pursue? :D
At the moment Big Keith, Patrick & myself are going up there on Saturday. If the winds stay as predicted we’ll be on the west facing slope which is about a mile on the Bunclody side of Nine Stones car park. We should be there at about 13.00
Little Keith (The good looking one)
-
Sounds great, hopefully I'll see you lads there. I have a few different models so will throw a few in the boot :D
I am putting one of these http://www.windrider.com.hk/products/e_images/212918andrew%20Bee2%20u.jpg together atm which would obviously be better for slope soaring but the final parts I need for it still haven't arrived :@
I think I may have an impromptu build session tonight and try to throw together a small kfm wing. Look forward to seeing you guys.
Justin
ps. Here is a video of some powered flying from yesterday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmRYRQr1IGw&feature=youtu.be
-
Yeah, I like the idea of starting out with a flying wing Justin. Hope all the parts turn up by Saturday. The beauty of “Wings” is that most can take the punishment of heavy landings without breaking into small pieces. (Ask me how I know! )
The only ‘problem’ with flying wings (I.M.O.) is that they tend to be very “tetchy” (sensitive) in pitch control. The best way to overcome that is to enter loads (60%) of exponential in elevator control. That ‘evens out’ the tendency to pitch up and down so violently. Also having Dual Rates can be of help. Then, gradually over time, you can wean yourself away from so much expo.
I would suggest that once you have mastered the dark art of landings, with a model that doesn’t mean you have to spend ages repairing the thing every time you’ve flown it, you can move onto more ‘conventional’ models.
So, let’s hope the weather stays as predicted. Here at my place right now it’s supposed to be sunny,……..I actually can’t see more than 150 mtrs. GRRrrrrr!!!!

Just need to cover her and make some winglets and she'll be good for a maiden on Saturday. Think I will cover her in green given the weekend thats in it. Bit nervous, I am always afraid my scratch builds will fly like a brick, any ideas on where the sweet spot for the COG should be?
Wingspan is 97cm, it was meant to be a metre but damn math!!! You can probably guess where I got the inspiration from
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/jumbo/6gVskLS.jpg)
-
As I remember the theory, the CoG should be 33% of the average mean chord back from the leading edge, on the inner chord,……….I think. :?:
I’m sure if you post the inner & outer chord measurements someone will come up the figure Justin
What type of foam are you using? Cross strap it all with fibre tape to give it some resilience. It’ll fly!
Forecast for Saturday is gusts to 40kph. That figure is assumed to be over flat, open ground. Up on the west slope that will probably correlate to around 60kph. I’d suggest you bring some lead with you,….it might need some ballast. :D
Oh, isn’t it exciting!

Here's a CG calculator.

Tried to maiden mine (http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3493) the other day... dead calm!

Don’t you just hate it when that happens!
Actually, Selleri, we were discussing how to pronounce you name at the recent glide in. :?:
I recon it’s pronounced “Celery” :D (as in the vegetable  )(no disrespect intended  ) We’ll find out when you arrive over here in a couple of months.
K.
-
Hi Seleri, nice work on the hot wire cutting, I'd love to give it a go but haven't found suitable foam yet, what type are you using?
I used this http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=100707 for my wing, its 5 mm and seems a bit more brittle than depron so normally I cover the whole thing with packing tape.
There is a weather man here in work (http://carlowweather.com) and he just informed me "Winds will be picking up from 1 about 20mph west to North West" so hopefully we'll see some good conditions for flying :D

Selleri is the Icelandic version of Celery but Sverrir is my given name, have fun with all those r's! ;)
Something like Sver-ear is close, one of my UK mates decided it was easier just to use Bob, lol.

These are EPS foam insulation plates from the building industry, 50mm thick, 600x1200mm, 16 kg/m3.
-
Jumbo make sure any foam you use for hot wire cutting is virgin and not recycled. Recycled tends to have hard lumps and other crap thru it. Makes the wire skip or ping ruining the core.
options available in the uk incl. virgin white foam, blue foam and from B&Q, knauf foam which is a peachy colour. The blue & knauf are denser and better in heavily loaded wings.
I believe Joe has found a local supplier for white, not sure which part of the world he's in at the moment though!!
-
Hello everyone :)
Sorry, crazy week, but finally, here are a few updates :)
First of all, Jumbo, please, feel free to come and fly with us! The worse that can happen, is that you will get hooked! :D The wing looks nice
Also, sorry, will not be able to come Saturday, wife made other plans for me  But I have an Easyglider, ready to go, so don't worry if you have nothing gliderish to fly, I can bring it, and you can fly it as long at you want. I have this thing for that purpose :D
Back to the meeting, here are a few photos:

The "cutest" model of the day for me... Very very nice work again from John!
On the Saturday, while the cloud base was too low for us to fly, we had a look at the Pine forest down the West slope, hunting for long lost gliders... I believe 2 were found in bits previously, but we have at least 2 EasyGliders left in there!
No luck, found nothing, but the way the trees are is quiet an impressive sight!

At some point, seeing how strong the wind was, we decided to put Roisin on a glider, and launch the lot at the slope! Needed ballast!
Talking about Roisin, once again, she prepared one of her secret dinner   . She is like a (young) mother to us!
Flowers is just a very little way for us to say a big thank you   (Ralph's idea.. He knows how to talk to girls :P )
Oh, and we cannot go to the slope without one of us having some sort of car trouble. This year, it was John's turn, and as usual, we were all here to help...
Anyway, once again, despite the poor flying conditions (too windy, or low clouds), lots of you travelled to the event   and we still had a great day (I had anyway :) ) and again, a big thank you to you all to make these events maybe the friendliest ones we can find
Hopefully, April will be a better month (usually is!) flying wise, and I hope to see most of you again on the 12th - 13th :D
Also, just to show the flying conditions, Adrian put a video on Youtube about my ASW15 flight. Scary! Should not have launched, but as we said, if you don't try, you don't know! :D
http://youtu.be/97g3A5W6yRg
Thanks Adrian for the video

Oh boy, what a difference a week makes! If only the glide-in had been this weekend. The weather couldn’t have been more different.
Never mind. It’s no good crying over spilt milk.
Justin, Patrick, Big Keith & myself thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on the west slope today.
This is Big Keith & Justin, and he is by no means a novice. The wing he ’knocked up’ on Thursday night flew like a dream.
Not made of solid EPS but of a built up construction it was incredibly light, at just under one meter span.
This meant that it did have a little difficulty penetrating out into the 25 - 35Kph winds that were blowing onto the slope.
Here is Justin’s wing beside the slightly large Zagi of Big Keith.
However, when it did get out into the lift it flew like a dream. Even the “Mad Man of Mt. Lienster” (me) found it easy to fly. I think it would be great in thermals.
Here we see Patrick about to fly his Zagi, Justin already flying his wing, & Big Keith who isn’t actually flying anything.
I think he’s praying, or may be he’s trying to fix his Mijet.
Unfortunately B. Keith didn’t have too much luck today. His Mijet had a shot aileron servo, & his “Flat V tail Thingy”
was found to have a loose wing joiner which gave the plane anhedral rather than dihedral.
So he fell back on that good old retainer, (no, not me) his Zagi.
B. Keith and Justin’s wings airborne together.
Finally here’s a couple of shots of a model you don’t see very often when in the air. A fantastic Phase 6 being superbly flown by………
Well if I don't say things like this, nobody else is going to, are they
All in all it was a good afternoons flying. Might do it again on Monday.
Anyone up for that? :D
(Photo's care of Big & Little Keith)
-
Yeah it was a better day today .. The weather was perfect if we had just waited another week ???
-
Had a great day flying up the slopes, thanks little Keith for helping set up the wing and teaching me how to launch it. I don't think I have ever done that much flying in one day before. It helps not having to charge batteries and I am now patiently putting all the extra lipos I brought back on a storage charge.
Can't wait to get down to fly at Mt. Leinster again and next time not to forget my suncream :@
(http://www.gliderireland.net/forum/images/uploads/jumbo/2014-03-15%2015.14.39.jpg)
I have a video of little Keith flying his model (and rather well too) which will get uploaded to youtube.
-
What a day it looks like, my goodness, we called it wrong last weekend.... anyway very interested in that new wing mate.... would you have a build diary?

I don't but they are incredibly quick to build so I may put another one together with a few tweaks I want to make and will record the build.

Ah, so you were using Li-Po’s to power your model, Justin. That’s why you said you were using a BEC!
In my infinite stupidity I associate Li-Po’s with powered flight so I had assumed you were using 4 or 5 cell ‘metal hydride battery in your glider. (I’m such a numpty sometimes. Okay, all the time! )
If I might just interject in my usual pedantic manor. Strictly speaking, a BEC is part of an ESC. What I believe you were using in your glider wing is actually called a U-BEC (Used to known as a Utility battery elimination circuit, these days it tends to be known by the Americanism of ‘Universal battery elimination circuit‘.) In simple terms it’s a voltage reducer. Used to eliminate the risk of damaging the rx & servos from the relatively high voltage produce by a Li-Po battery.
As for flying on Big L again…….We’re always pleased to fly with sensible pilots Justin. If you’re looking for some company when you’re intending to fly at any location, just post a thread on this forum. Someone will probably reply. Actually I think Alan Perse lives up your way. And if you’re coming down to Wexford…. either myself, or B Keith or Patrick will probably join you. :D
