Title: Roll up! Roll up! for a Great Weekend (29 -30th Sep.)
Post by: Happy Days on September 07, 2012, 04:31:54 AM
Well, the long range forecast for the Glide - In is showing 13 degrees with broken cloud for Saturday and,….Oh no… Rain! for the Sunday.

http://www.accuweather.com/en/ie/carlow/207508/september-weather/207508

But then, it’s a long way off so it could all change by then.
What we need is some eternal optimism, maybe if we all think positive it’ll be a sunny weekend with strong winds one day, and light breezes the next, so everyone will be happy. :D

So who is going to be there? Well, it seems that Ralph is bringing some electrical gear up for Richard’s new man cave, so I guess that means there will be some ‘R+R’ on the mountain. (Okay, I know the pun is a bit corny.) And if Ralph is coming up from Cork I dare say Les will be keeping him company on the journey, and maybe they’ll tie Kevin to the roof rack as well.
I’m hoping Andy (god bless him) will show as he’s bringing some bottles of wine, which I can’t buy here in the south, and JP will be there too.
‘Grand Master’ Fred will grace us with his presents (yes, I know the spelling is wrong ) and hopefully a few, (or all) of the lads from around the Dublin area will show up.
Mr. Buckley has threatened to put in an appearance with his latest Red and Yellow, (…..or is it Yellow and Red?) creation, and of course I shall be there to annoy everyone.

I’m wondering if Joe might see fit to pull himself away from his water sports, and I understand that we might have a couple of newcomers who are interested in perusing the “Civilized” way of aero modelling.

So, who else is intending to join our little gathering? Come on lads,….sound off!

Keith.

Hi Keith, yes tyhe Northern crew is all set for the weekend trip to Mt L

I thought maybe Kees would have been here with us in Ireland to join up but just got an amail to say its the weekend before that he is back in Ireland. He is one great man and loves the slope but then he is a Dutch man and thay do not have any slopes to fly. What we have not got we always want.

I am not bringing Diane as Frenchy Fred has promised to teach her to fly and I object to learner woman on the slope during a mans day lol
I am building up some ironing to keep her busy over the said weekend lol
I hope she does not read this or my plan will be scuttled.

Did a couple of trips for work this week about 5o mile each way and it wiped me out!!

Yeah, Bill. I was talking to JP in Newcastle and he was telling me that you were still having a hard time of it. :(  Pitty coz it’s gonna be good fun. Hopefully next spring will see you once again on the slopes of Big L.

You’re a braver man than me for putting that in writing Richard!  Maybe Kees can also join us in the spring. :D

Incidentally guys, the National Ploughing Championship is in Co. Wexford this year, in the week leading up to the Glide-In. Why not come to the Sunny South East and take an extended break!

I believe Rosin is coming down. I promised her some lessons so there will be at least one woman student on the slopes that weekend Richard.
Go on! Bring Diane as well, you wouldn’t want the world to think you were sexist would you?

Title: Fly-in
Post by: Ron on September 09, 2012, 16:59:25 PM
I'm hoping to be there, but...

Waiting to hear from the hospital about being incarcerated at their pleasure, and that could be any time.
Won't know from day to day, but going to earhole my GP tomorrow to see if she can pull a few strings.

The weather is bound to be good, well, better than wet and windy West Cork anyway.

Waiting to be incarcerated?  My wife used to threatened to do that to me, with a pair of rusty scissors, :(  if she ever caught me in bed with another woman. (But since I turned sixty, I need 48 hours notice to get steam up   so she doesn’t seem so worried.)

So hopefully Ron we’ll see your happy, smiling face beaming at us on the slopes of Big L.! :D  I don’t think I’ve ever actually met you, so I’ll be looking forward to it. 8)
How did you get on with your quad-copter by the way? :?:  Last I heard you were using it to spy on some little beauty sunbathing in her rear garden! :P

Well Hi Keith and welcome to the forum,  good to have you aboard! :D

Vis the glide-in, a word of warning,……….It’ll be a bit on the chilly side up there at the end of the month so warm clothing is the order of the day. (No stiletto heals & fish net tights)(For the girls I mean, not you,……Unless that’s your preference  )

But to return to matters ‘aeronautical’ ……..have you got any gear yet? :!:  Model? Transmitter? Anything? If not then bring some money with you to the glide-in, I’m sure someone will have some gear suitable for a student to exchange for dosh. Who knows, you could be flying your own model before the end of the glide-in! :D

Keith.
(Er,...this is going to become confusing  :?:  ....You can be Big Keith, and I'll be Little Keith)

I haven't got a thing aeronautical yet still waiting ..

Hi Keith and All.

(Is that Big or Little?)

The quad has gone through many incarnations, rather like the broom handles and heads.
Now it's got a DJI Naza flight controller and is the best it's ever been.
Not perfect, but then nothing ever is.

Here's a link to a bit of video...

https://vimeo.com/49225662

As you can see, no luck on the sunbathing  :P

Post by: Happy Days on September 11, 2012, 16:05:35 PM
So why haven’t you been keeping us all up to date with these incarnations?
She flys very steady now, impressive landscape, and a very wide angle lens. All cleaver stuff !.

What would be really cool would be to get some aerial shots from the copter of a glider in flight. 8)  Do you recon you could handle two sets of controls at once Ron?

Post by: Ron on September 11, 2012, 16:21:36 PM
Apologies for not keeping up.

About 4 months ago I had a sudden and severe pain.
Cut long story short... I was eventually whizzed up to hospital in Cork with an aortic aneurism, right up near the heart.
Straight into ICU.

So, been 'doing nothing' like a good boy while taking blood pressure lowering pills.
Latest C/T scan shows the main problem has virtually healed, but there is a smaller secondary 'problem' that informed opinion says needs a plastic pipe and two jubilee clips.
No that's not right.
Needs a stent.
So waiting on the consultant's appointment system.....

Hence the doubt about getting to Big L.

Flying two at once may pose a slight problem, especially as I've only got one transmitter  :?
(And one head, and that's not much good at flying one at a time)

But maybe following someone else's glider.......

One good thing is, it's got a brilliant Return To Home function.
Hit the switch and it flies back and lands itself.
Does that with signal failure too.

Now if I could just get a glider to do that  8)

oooOOOOooo, I bet that’s knocked your confidence. Sounds rather scary. :(  You need lots of R+R.  We all hope it goes well for you Ron.  You’ll be running up and down those slopes in no time. :D

As for the Return to Home function, and lands itself hu! If that isn’t cheating I don’t know what is! !

Hi Richard,

Sun's out here now, but wind is way too high, and from the NW, so no use to me.

Yes I do sometimes use the 'stabilisation' thingy, but just threw that lot together in a hurry.
As it was, it came from 1080 source files and took 3 hours to export at 720.
Have to get a newer, faster computer

hi ron,

congrat's on beating that aneurism, you're a walking miracle!!!  some years ago i was told if you got one, you had a 50/50 chance of getting to hospital alive and then you had a 50/50 chance of surviving the surgery.

now, i'm not much into betting, but i thing those are pretty long odds, so well done and best of luck with the recovery.

regards,  gb

Thanks Gerry.

Yes they told me at the hospital that I was a very 'interesting case' because most people die before they get there
And I was lucky to be alive.

Actually I'm double lucky, because the first time the pain hit it was misdiagnosed as muscle spasm.
Understandable under the circumstances.
So under the influence of pain killers, a few days later, I went to the boatyard and out to my mooring, and was pulling on an outboard starting cord, when it hit me again.
Had to get ashore and home by myself, not knowing what it was.

This time the local hospital did a C/T scan and the consultant came rushing in shouting for an ambulance to Cork.

Anyway, thanks all for the good wishes.
Still waiting for a stent, assuming the chief surgeon thinks that's what's needed.
I reckon gaffer tape should do it

John.

Post by: Happy Days on September 20, 2012, 21:25:39 PM
Well, not really John. It is possible to fly in ESE winds but it’s a long walk to the slope and unless there’s a howling gale the slope only produces light lift. (It’s actually at the far end of the south slope which curves round a little bit to slightly face SE.)
It can be flown but it is difficult,…..unless your name is Fred Marie!

At the moment the winds are forecast as SW to N over the course of the two days. :D

What are you bringing with you John?

Hate to say this John, but I think you might be looking at the wrong weekend!!!!!
The glide - in is not this coming weekend, it’s next weekend (29th - 30th )

The model looks very interesting. To my mind it looks a little bit like a Jart. 8)  I know it’s not,….I’m just saying in my opinion it's similar. Love the big rudder / elevator 8)  and the swept wings. I’ll look forward to seeing that one airborne. :D

Are you not going to let on as to what model that picture is?  (You intend to keep us all in suspenders till next weekend er?)

Of course, if you still fancy coming south to sunny Wexford this weekend you could always visit the (powered) Scale Championships at the Model County Flying Club. They’re on this weekend. You’ll be very welcome. :D  All mod cons. Heated Club house, tea/coffee, toilets. I understand there are going to be some quite large powered scale models there.

Hi Ralph sorry for the late reply but I have had a hectic week. My friend was visiting from Holland plus every spare minute is being spent in the man cave.
If you would have 3 light switches, say a double and 1 single, plus as many sockets as you can squeeze into your already packed car.

I should be at the mountain around 10am Saturday morning, I will bring the bucket BBQ and a few sausages, Andrew is baking the rolls. If anyone is a vegi then he can eat grass lol
A safe journey to everyone thats traveling and see you all soon.

Here we are guys, on the eve of the Glide - In. Better make sure all those ‘metal-Hydride batteries are on charge. (at a rate of no more than 10% of capacity :P ) and don’t forget the Tx batteries will need charging as well.

At times like these I collect all the models that I’m gonna fly and make sure ALL the ancillary parts are there.

Fuselage …..check!
Appropriate wings….check! (more than once I've turned up at the slope with the wrong wings for the fuse I'd taken  )
Wing joiner…..check!
Wing joiner bolts….check!
Tail plane….check!
Ballast…..check!
Battery charged…..check!
sellotape….check!

If all of the above parts are there I move all of it into the car and start collecting the next model’s parts together.

I’ll post a weather report at first light tomorrow (Just after 07.00)The forecasts are looking good for Saturday. 8)  Let's hope they're right. :D

Morning Men!
(Stand 'at ease')
Good to see so many of you up and rearing to go at this time of the day!

Here is a picie of Big L taken a few minutes ago. You can just see it emerging from under it’s blanket of cloud. Should be completely clear in an hour or so.

The wind speed at the moment is 5 gusting 7k/h.
Temp is 6*C due to rise to around 15C. (ambient)
For those who have never enjoyed the delights of slope soaring on Mt Lienster, it’s going to ‘feel’ like 6 or 7 degrees C even at the warmest time of day. So wrap up warm and bring a flask of hot coffee or tea with you.

Oh, and one more thing. (This is for Big  Keith)……..It’s a kind of  ‘understanding’ or ‘etiquette’ that new pilots have to supply buns for the rest of the crew on their first glide-in. …………Just thought I’d mention that.

Wind direction is variable…..WNW to WSW.

Atmospheric pressure ……….1019mB rising slightly.

Visibility………..25+ Km.

Relative humidity,….. oh, ..who cares! It’s gonna be a good days flying lads so get there as soon as you can.

For those who can’t remember where the west slope is, it’s the ridge with heather in front of the flight line and trees behind the landing area. (Andrew will remember it well!) We normally park up at the bared entrance to the forestry lane.

I’m just loading the car with my kit,……see you all there around 10.30.

Tally-Ho!

K.

I haven’t bothered posting a picture of the mountain, it can’t be seen this morning. It’s completely covered in cloud.  The sky is heavily overcast and there is very light rain.

Winds are SW at 20 gusting 45 K/h :D

Atmospheric pressure ……1013mB falling :(

Enough said?!

If there is going to be any flying today it wont be for at least a couple of hours so don’t choke on your corn flakes. Wake up slowly and take your time.
I’ll let you know conditions in an hours time.

At this time the only change in the weather is the barometric pressure,….it’s falling like a stone! :(

Forecasters are suggesting there might be a slight let up after 10.00 till around 13.00.

I’ll toddle up to the mount on the off chance of catching a flight on the south slope. One thing’s for sure, in these wind speeds there’ll be plenty of lift….provided I can see the plane!!

Hi keith, I texted Fred a while ago asking him what time he’d be on the mountain, haven’t heard back yet. (he, and the others who stayed over at the B+B are all probably hungover, Ha!)

I’ll be leaving home about 10.15, you going up?

On Saturday I counted 20 happy faces. :D  (I don’t think there were any unhappy ones) that’s got to be a near record for a Mt Lienster glide -in, at least since I started going there. Great to see so many faces. Some from the past, and some new ones as well.

Allen and Connor, along with Noel joined us to relish a more civilized form or aeromodeling than the hectic F3A type that they normally enjoy.
Ralph, (Zagi) Les, and the Kevins’ travelled from the west. NI was represented by PJ, Andrew(the wine) Richard and not forgetting  Rosin, (not sure I’ve spelt that right) Also joining the happy throng were Alan, John and newcomers Big Keith and Steven.  Rick also put in an appearance for a while and of course the Grand “Dee” of gliding in Ireland, Fred, who was there from dawn till dusk. Counting the above names I’ve obviously missed a few out, sorry lads, no offence intended but at my age they say three thing happen to you. Firstly the memory goes,……I can’t remember the other two things.

I believe at one point there were 11 models in the air at the same time.
I haven’t downloaded any pictures from my camera yet but I know Kevin,…….er, now how can I describe which Kevin I’m referring to????? :?:  Dare I say ‘young’ Kevin? 8)  or maybe  ‘younger’ Kevin perhaps? :P  Anyway, a Kevin was running around like a newspaper photographer taking snaps of everything that moved. Young Rosin,  was also armed with what looked like small computer with an enormous lenses attached to the front of it. So I’m sure there’ll be plenty of picies being uploaded to the forum before too long.

Sunday was a different kettle of fish. Rain, low cloud and more rain.  Ralph, Les, Fred, Richard, JP Andrew, Big Keith and myself met up at Nine Stones around 11.00. After a brief discussion we moved down to the west slope. Still non flyable weather! But Fred thought he’d give it a try, (Crazy Frenchman! ) It must be said he did fly, for a little while. Les & Ralph left after witnessing the insanity and a little while later the cloud lifted, and the rain stopped! And some more flying was had. How about that!  Not much I admit but at least it wasn’t a completely wasted journey. We all dispersed by14.00 to make our way home.

Overall I’d say that was one of the very best glide - in’s I’ve ever attended. Really big thank you to all who attended.

Keith. (Little)

Hi all,

First of all, thank you all for coming      What a great week end that was! The last meeting of the season was definitively one to remember!
First, by the number of pilots, with 20 of them on the Saturday, but also, and the most important, for the great craic we had over the week end!

Saturday saw some great flying conditions on the West slope.
Lots of people, lots of gliders, lots of flying

Lots of new faces also, welcome guys

Enough of my bad English, time for the (poor quality) photos!

Conor and Alan, off for some flying. That was also Destiny time earlier on the day  :D

BBQ at the slope, are the best BBQs! That's it, end of discussion!  :D
That's where we also started on the pommeau (more on that later!   )

hhhmmmmmm, sausages!

One of my highlight of the day, was the first ever try of a remote controlled flying machine by Stephen
Thanks to Andrew for the teaching leessons, and for sharing his radio
Oh, and have to mention (no shame anymore!   ) I tough he said launch, or go... When he was really saying something like wait or hold on... Anyway, launched the glider... looking at it slowly, but surely, heading to a crash.... Looked back, to a laughing Andrew... We was putting off his radio tray when I launched, and told me to wait...
Locally, the glider was the good old easyglider, not a scratch, and was launched 2 minutes after that...
That was Stephen "first" contact with the seriousness of this hobby...

Fair play to Alan too! Never saw his Ka8 flying so much

Roisin  :D  A bit like a ray of sunshine in this weird world full of grown up men, with toys, on top of a mountain, in the cold... And apparently enjoying it.

Oh, and John had a bad day  :(  Broke the Fox because of receiver's failure. Also had a few walks, a bit like his real hobby was hill walking (sorry John!  O:)  ) But no worries, we found a buddy lead for the next meeting!
Fair play to John, brought only new models, all for the first flight (5 or 6 of them! That guy is a machine!   )

We call it a day at around 6pm, and decided to head down to the B&B... Or are we?
Well, no, Les' car decided to sink in the wet grass and sit itself on top of a bog(?) on the side of the road...

The car would not moved an inch!!
Finally, the "team" decided to listen to the very first idea that came out of a genius mind from one member of the team   and jack the car

Hi all,
Yes that was a good days flying, I really enjoyed watching John's jets take to the skies. Many thanks to all who helped with my Grunnau Baby.
John you might be interested in one of these to get the swing wing working a little more scalelike. Hmmmm perhaps I need a jet.

My word, what an informative bunch of photos!
I had no idea Les’s car got stuck on Saturday. I notice that Ralph was offering his usual helpful encouragement. Although in the photo it looks like he was getting ready to do a bit of sheep shagging!

I’m getting very concerned about Richard. He seems to be extraordinarily eager to show off his underwear! On the slope I caught him dropping his trousers with JP! You don’t believe me?!

Here’s the proof:

And what’s more. That evening he seems to have been involved in a further exposé while doing ’something’ with Fred. (The mind boggles.)  To make matters worse, on Sunday I overheard the guys that had stayed at the B&B asking who still had the keys to whose room. (I think they must have had one of “those” parties the previous night  ............ You know, where each person throws their room keys onto the table to see who gets to share who’s room with whom.  Very kinky!)

I'm not sure I should go to any more of these Glide - In's. I don't think it's healthy!

K.

From its discovery in 1930 until 2006, Pluto was classified as a planet. In the late 1970s, following the discovery of minor planet 2060 Chiron in the outer Solar System and the recognition of Pluto's relatively low mass, its status as a major planet began to be questioned.[14] In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, many objects similar to Pluto were discovered in the outer Solar System, notably the scattered disc object Eris in 2005, which is 27% more massive than Pluto.[15] On August 24, 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) defined what it means to be a "planet" within the Solar System. This definition excluded Pluto as a planet and added it as a member of the new category "dwarf planet" along with Eris and Ceres.[16] After the reclassification, Pluto was added to the list of minor planets and given the number 134340.[17][18] A number of scientists hold that Pluto should continue to be classified as a planet, and that other dwarf planets should be added to the roster of planets along with Pluto.

Alright, time to put the kids away from the 'puter!
Grown up stuff on the way!

Saturday night, we ended up in the B&B for some good food (thanks Roisin   ), aperitif, and great laughs!

Starting with some Russian Vodka... (and cucumbers!)

Beaujolais...

Rum, Bushmills, and of course, a liter of pommeau (had to bring some proper drink...  :D )

Andrea was... Happy!

And Richard was still showing his pants...

Some great laughs, and good chat, solving World problems and all that. Good good fun.

We also had a visit from a Welsh guy...

That was before the incident...
4 glasses of Pommeau, and he was gone  8)  We did not saw him the next morning...
French drinks, definitively sort out the boys from the men!

Andrea was getting happier...

To make the story short, I was the last one going to bed! Take that André!
Pommeau always win!

Anyway, great night!

Next morning was, errr... Interresting! Not very pushed to go flying, especially when the conditions were supposed to be not good at all!
Finally, at around 11, we were at the 9 stones car park, in the clouds, and decided to move down to the West slope, to fly under the clouds.
Clouds still low, but I manage to give it a go, in very weird conditions, as the launching spot was right in the turbulences. Some interresting launches!
Flew for a while down the slope, air was clamer.

And then, miracle, clouds started to lift, Old Keith flew his Phase 6, and roughly an hour later, we could see some blue skies and sun coming towards us  :D

Anyway, we decided at around 2pm to leave camp and go home, we all had enough flying for the week end, and some of the pilots still present had a long drive back home.

So, a great week end in all aspect. And I flew more with the Quark (aaaahhhhh thos low and slow inverted passes  =P~ )than with the asw15! A first, but I really love this glider! (just on a personnal note  :D )

Building season is here now, with hopefully a few flying sessions in the middle, once again, that you all for coming

Hi All,

A massive thanks to you all for the crack on Saturday. Myself and my young lad, Tom, went up to "have a looK" and to have been made feel more welcome we couldn't have been, what a genuinely great day.

To have had the pleasure and shared in the fun of the day was one thing but to have had the oppotunity to acutally fly a glider for the first time was a true privilege,

Andrew / Fred many many thanks, I'm truly hooked and now looking for an easy glider ;-) if anyone knows of one going? PS they are indestructable as we proved when Fred just fired the easy glider off the slope and watched it smash into the deck while Andrew was looking on wondering what part of "hold on" could have been interpruted as "GO".

To big Keith thanks Mate you've found a genuienly good bunch of heads there bro and to Little Keith thanks for the education and the fun on the day,

Having looked at the photo's I think the B&B was the crack that night. Thanks lads from Stephen and "Young Tom (9)"

What a great selection of models being flown the weekend.

I had batteries charged and planes ready to go on sunday but after checking Keith's updates on the weather I decided to stay put.

Stephen, I am sure I have an Easy Glider unbuilt at home, I 'll check later and let you know! My old one is still going strong.

It’s your own fault Richard,  you should know better for a man of your age than to be drinking the ‘hard stuff’.(am I sounding like a wife? :P)  I’ve no sympathy for you at all. (Well, may be just a little bit  )

Great pictures Kevin (Junior) . Please bring your camera to the next meeting.

That has to have been one of the best glide-ins doesn’t it lads. I’ve not heard from anyone who didn’t enjoy themselves. Thanks to all of you for making it so.

Keith. (Little)

Hi lads
It was such a good weekend that Stephen was bitten by the bug . I believe he has started negotiating a price on a glider with a member on here :-).. I'm sure he will be on to let us know how he got when he gets it :-)

So well done lads there's another one converted :-)

How very enthusiastic of you Stephen. First flight on the Saturday, - first plane on the Thursday!! 8)   You passionate person, you!

I’m telling you Stephen, slope soaring is highly addictive. You’ll never look at the countryside  in the same light again.
In future you’ll be driving along with the family, and your wife will say something like, “Oh isn’t that a pretty view?” You’ll find yourself replying, “Not really, the angle of the hill is okay, but there’s no landing area.” (She’ll look at you and conclude that her mother was right all along,….you’re soft in the head! )

Great, isn't it! :P

The Keithy has run into a little bit of a problem with the Glide - In  Video, :!:

I’ve always believed in keeping production as simple as possible, but I’ve hit a snag that’s going to take a while to sort out.  I’m not the cleverest of guys with pc’s. (Okay, let’s be honest, I’m not the cleverest with anything…… .. Thought I‘d say it before someone else did!)
I’ve finished the opening sequence and the ending, but I’m stuck trying to do the middle section . So you’ll have to be content with just the opening for the time being. It’s supposed to ‘get you in the mood’ to want to watch more. It’ll probably send you all to sleep. Zzzzzz

Anyway, here’s the opening sequence,…………the whole thing will follow in a couple of weeks. (Hopefully)

Keith
ps
Er,….. Richard, be afraid,…..be very afraid! :P

ooOoo, I’ve finally figured out how to embed the video,…..Clever Keithy!!!

Patience, they say, is a virtue. Try to be virtuous Keith.

I’m trying to get my editing suite to work. :!:  (I only use the cheapest. This one came free with the pc. They don‘t come cheaper than that!) Along with an attempt to enable our friends on the continent to enjoy the video as well. :D
Confused by that? Yea’…. so am I at the moment, :?:  you’ll see what I mean when it’s finished.
Should be done by December 25th.

I’ve been repairing my beloved P6 (for the umpteenth time.) I’m repairing repairs that were themselves repairs. Funny how models always break in the same place!
(Think I might have to treat myself to a new one. :) )

Well, here it is guys! The most Fantastic, the most Superb, the most,……
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious of all model gliding videos ever shot on the Big L. 8)

It will make you smile, :)  it will make some of you cry   (with embarrassment   ) but that’s not my fault. The camera never lies! :P

To give credit where it’s due, I lifted some of the ‘stills’ from the forum, thanks to those photographers.
Thanks also to Fred for the translations.  (I just hope they don’t say anything they shouldn’t! )

So, after an imaginary fanfare, here it is!…….

Thank you for all your positive comments gentlemen. :)  I’m pleased that you liked it.

To M. the Pope; I have to admit that the blue sky and sunshine were inserted with C.G.I.
In truth, the sun always shines on Ireland, ….but the clouds get in the way most days of the year!
