had a good few flights with the quark today and it's SOME glider i would say the bullet will be gathering dust this year
i bought a multi-fun glider at the end of the summer before i got the quark and i have to say the quark wins hands down

conditions were tricky today cause the wind had a bit of south in it and the lift was coming and going but the wee quark flew a blinder and even in winds up to 30mph

we're over looking Magilligan here and you can see how much water is laying on the land  :(  it's been like this now for months  :(
Title: Andy's Quark
Post by: Freedom Flyer on January 10, 2012, 16:17:26 PM
Andy,
That Quark is a pretty sweet looking plane, Nice job.  My two older brothers got this sail plane for me about 5 years ago, A Canterbury Sailplanes F-20,  I'm not a foam builder(yet), when I opened it up, there were a lot of parts missing so I shoved it under the bench and left it.  About a year ago my brother Wayne asked me if I was going to build it, I told him probably not as I didn't feel like trying to track down the parts.  He said he'd like to build it for me, I didn't argue :D .  It took him a while, but this is what he presented me with.  It weighs in at 1800 grams and flies beautifully in 25+mph winds, like it's on a rail. The day I test flew, it was blowing about 43mph. what a blast!!! Freedom Flyer

Glad to see you & Chris got out Andy,  surely everyone's been out on the slopes today, haven’t they???

In my case the Alpina, phase 6, combat wing all had a good airing and I nearly had my first flight of a new model, but I couldn’t quite get it finished in time for today.

Quite breezy at around 10am but during the course of the following few hours the winds eased off so that by 2pm it was ’gentle’ on Big L.  It got warm towards the afternoon as well. I was actually removing layers of clothing. Makes a change from standing around feeling like a ‘Michelin-man.’

No pictures I’m afraid. I’ve given up trying to fly and take picies!

Hi keith

I got out to day, for an hour on my local slope. I test flew my new filp 600, which went well in the strong wind, also I had a quick flight with my ME 109, which went really well, now that the CofG is sorted.

Hey John,

It seems there was only a few of us out on the slopes yesterday then.

Filip 600: :D …….so did Puffin finally decide to ship to NI? (I know they shipped a Filip 400 fuse out to me some years ago.)
I assume your 600 is the soarer, and not the electric version. Went well I trust? I believe the rudder is optional on those models, it was rather in-effective on my 400 version.

And the M.e. 109 was  airborne,…….well done. I’m sure another member of this forum had trouble with the CoG on his 109. Had to be a lot further back than had been suggested,……… as I recall it went very well once it was sorted out. Bring it down to the PSS in March. It can have a dog fight with Fred's P51 :D

So it appears there was only 4 of us out yesterday. Seemingly none of the ‘Dublin’ guys flew, :?  and our friends in the west spent the afternoon dozing in front of the fire having eaten too much Sunday lunch. :(  (Some things never change. ) What a sorrowful show on a lovely day!
Although I think it might have been raining yesterday in the west of Ireland....like I said, some things never change!!

No flying for me next week end again, I'm setting up my new workshop  :D

Working all weekend!!  That’s sacrilege. (Personally I always considered work to be a much overrated pastime.)

But new workshop. Now that sounds good.

Fred’s New Year motto; "a place for everything, and everything in it’s place." Er Fred?

Me thinks, “If Fred is clearing out his garage he’s bound to find models that he had forgotten he had.”...................Don't forget you wrinkly grey haired friend in county wexford Fred :D

Well, actually, that's an extended Workshop at the in law's house. A full big garage, and 2 big workshops (heated!!) just for myself  :D

Actually yesterday, did a very light cleaning of my garage, and found a glider I forgotI had!  :D

This is my very old Graupner Terry! Supposed to be a hotliner back in the days, but that thing never saw a motor. Always used it a pure glider.
Did an article on it at the time, with the mods I did (added ailerons, reduced diedhral) that thing flew great!

It's still in good shape for its age (all foam thing), and I think I will revamp it (I like the shape of this glider!)

This is now sold as the "chip" and in Elapor. Great little model as far as I remember  :D

Today... Well yesterday actually.
Don't know for you, but weather here in Dublin was great (like summer!... We will pay for that later! ) and this is the return of the Westerlies (for the 3rd week end in a row! Sound fishy to me! We will definitively pay for all that!)

Ok so this week end, managed to bring the camera, and did one of the most stressful, but most rewarding flight of the year so far. Just to situate things, my ASW15 was just a dot down the valley. Put a good fight, and managed to bring it back! These are the best days! 10km/h winds (15 gust at the anemometre) and sun! Local slope, and a bunch of people I haven't seen for a while! (years for some!  :D ).

Anyway, here are some photos :

And I brought the daughter too! In full winter gears and a bag full of sandwishes! She loved it, and now want her own glider  :D

My good old ASW15... I'm in love with a glider!  :D

I also did the first flight of my Alula (finally!) Great little model, that fly in nothing!
Great for the summer! Next flight for the Alula in July, here    :

Nice pics,
Thats a beautiful glider Jim flies. makes all the right sounds. I could'nt make Sat (work) but flew or should I say crashed a few models on the Sunday. Anyone know what gorilla glue is? I need some or something similar for a bluto wing thing.

Gorilla Glue:
Obtainable in lots of hardware stores and builders merchants in Ireland. A polyurethane glue, it’s very light and expands as it cures….so don’t put too much on the parts to be stuck. (The expanding foam that window installers use to fix windows in place is very similar.)
Bonds incredibly well provided the items to be glued are clamped tight together while the glue is curing, otherwise the items will be “pushed apart” by the expanding glue. In fact the tighter the items are held together, the stronger the bond. :D  It also has a slight degree of ‘give’ in it. Unlike for instance, epoxy.

Nice one Fred. Good to see some old faces again,…..and the young lady. I’m sure she wont have to ask her Daddy twice for a glider of her own!

I was out yesterday as well. West slope of the  Big L. :D  Very light winds :( , too light for the Phase 6, so I threw the Alpina off the ridge instead. Think I found a thermal 8) . Hope you’re reading this Fred.
I’ll just repeat that in case you missed it. I, Keith, flew in a thermal yesterday! (For the first time in years.) and I got the plane back to the landing area. Slight shock,…….I found that the crow brakes on that model are virtually ineffective in light wind conditions!! Only way to land it (after four attempts) was to make a tight turn into wind and sit her on the ground straight away.

Only three weeks to the first fly-in of the year,…..wooopppeeee

What???!!! Keith flying something in less than 200km/h winds!!      :P

Well, you'll see, these days are more memorable than the ones with big winds, much much more satisfactions when you manage to stay up by just piloting skills

As for crows.. Well, you know my point of view!  :P (and strangely enough, we had a small chat at the slope about that on Saturday!)

Great day on Saturday.  I can vouch for the fact that Fred's ASW 15 was a tiny speck (and it is a big glider) way below us down the valley and the master pulled it off again!!  Great rescue!

Sunny, warm, light to no wind. Been waiting for today to try out my Hobbyking bungee rubber. Setup up a hi-start with 20m rubber 100m line. First launch was ok straight into a little thermal 2 minute flight not bad. Second launch more height similar flight. 3rd launch more height similar flight. 4th launch similar height more flight! straight in a decent thermal. Up up up up.. 25 minutes later  First decent thermal of the summer.
Had a few more flights but that was by far the best.  Reckon I can get a lot more height from the launch with more line. I can probably add another 30/40 metres before i reach the limits of the field. Really happy with the Hobbyking rubber. Was hopin with a decent hi-start i could do a good bit of thermal flying this year. So far so good. Now I want a 3 metre thermal machine. Better start cutting some foam!

Well here’s a coincidence.  For the first time, since my wife and I moved to Ireland, we saw a powered glider over our house on, I think it was Saturday. (Might have been Friday.)

Your dad hasn’t been flying around the Enniscorthy area has he? And 80 years young! He’ll be catching me up soon.

Nice one John.
I think that's the motor glider that has flown over my house in Naas a number of times. Saw it on they way back from Mt Leinster a year or two ago as well, flying parallel with the M9 motorway. Its based in Kilrush, is that right?

Post by: johnfireball on March 12, 2012, 23:23:31 PM
Yes Keith that was on friday they were over that way. They must have got lost Andrew following the motorway back to Kilrush (I joke of course they are some of the best pilots in the country, 60 years at it) They have been flying that aircraft since new in 1974. It,s powered by a volkswagon engine and has got to be the most economical powered flying machine in the country. It soars engine off, prop feathered quite reasonably. A classic machine with great character, I love it.

Oh by the way notice the tree on the approach to the runway, many are quite nervous of it. Apparently just skim the treetop and your approach is perfect.
