Post by: cvanscho on June 26, 2007, 10:10:51 AM
Hi guys

Any thoughts on coming down to Kerry for a fly-in?

What about a weekend somewhere in the middle of August - how would that suit?

I don't have a direct line of comms to the Cork guys, so I don't really know what to do.

If this is the general level of interest, looks like its just me, Brian, Ron and maybe Fred will get together for a fly!  I think that qualifies more as a road trip?

Due to the massive scale of interest in this land-mark event, and the limited physical size of Co. Kerry, we are now allocating a fixed number of places on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please post your application forms, duly completed, to.........

 :!:  :!: lol

But no, seriously, anyone want to join us on 25/26 August in windy Kerry for an informal slope glide-in?

Hi Ralph, perhaps we should look at a new date to accomodate the Cork guys, as well as maybe Joe?

Any ideas?  Brian Coombes has a limited schedule, I was trying to accomodate him - waddya think Brian?

The problem with a fixed venue is the weather.  We may need to keep it open to allow for different wind directions, but establish a fixed meeting point?

I haven't had any conlcusive response yet from RTE about Mullghanish, which has the potential to work in most wind directions, and is closer to most of the rest of the Country (maybe not our friends in Sligo?).  No matter, if that doesn't work we have some great alternatives lined up!

Lads,
fix a firm date of the 16th of Sept and I will have 4 to 8 to travel. However they need a firm date here, the week after and the week before are other events.

Chris, can we fix this as the date?

Right guys, it's all coming together now for the 16/09/2007!

Brian and I have doing doing further research on venues (I know, its a really, really tough job, but someone.....!), and we now have lined up a fantastic, tried and tested slope for every wind direction except vertical! :D   They are as follows:

Mweelin (478m): SW, S, SE.

Rossbeigh Hill (274m): NW, N, NNE

Seefin Mountain, Glenbeigh (43m): NE, E

Carrahane Strand, Ardfert (17m): West.

Reserve West slope: White Strand, Rossbeigh Beach, Glenbeigh.

Meeting places will have to be determined closer to the date, depending on what Windguru (http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=47753) tells us (use "Inch Strand" spot for Glenbeigh area, "Banna Beach" for Ardfert area).

Suggested meeting spots are as follows:

West wind:  Tralee, outside MacDonalds as you come in from the Limerick/Castleisland side.

NW to E: Glenbeigh, outside the Londis petrol station/food store, last business on the right just before you leave town for Kells/Caherciveen (and just before the right turn that goes down to Rossbeigh beach).

SE to SW: Ballyvourney, Cork, in parking lot behind that pub/shop on the north side of the road, which is also the last business on the right side of the road before you leave town for Killarney (name to follow - this is also a great spot for take-aways, or for relaxing afterwards!).

It would be best to swop phone numbers, my mobile no. is: 087 929 7071.

PlLease feel free to suggest alternative arrangements!

Chris

Excellent stuff Chris. Fairest of plays to ya!

Had Gerry Buckley on from Limerick (Glider Sec Shannon club). He's into coming down too and maybe a few from the Shannon club. Will pass the info on to him and get some numbers.

Looks like we should have a decent group! Shaping up nicely.

Any more word from Cork? Ralph you guys still on?

And the Leinster lads? Me and Fred defo. Peter, Alan you guys in?

Matt and Peter up in Leitrim? fancy a long drive!!?

Great news, Ron!  Looking forward to meeting you (and your friends hopefully)!  Great news from you, Joe, as well!

As you are all aware, we are currently in this incredible Indian Summer calm.  We're not allowed to complain, of course, because everyone in Ireland apart from us slopers will have us shot at dawn (or, they might not even wait 'til dawn)!

So, the big question is, will it last until Sunday?  So far the longer range forecasts have been saying "yes", but all that changed this morning, Windguru is now talking about a bit of a SW early on Sunday.  So, a glimmer of hope there, but I guess it's still too early for the forecasts to have any accuracy.  We'll talk again closer to the weekend!

Brian Coombs is bringing a car-load of new toys over from the UK for me.  It's a bit agonising - he is only getting to Kerry on Saturday, so I won't really have time to get them all sorted ready for Sunday!

Hi Vincent!  Welcome to the forum, and your English is great!

Yeah, I think our Indian Summer is over ..... :?

So far, Sunday looks very rainy in the morning, but should clear up by midday, with a fresh north-westerly blowing.  So, that implies a late snooze in bed, and then head for Glenbeigh/Rossbeigh!

Tomorrow (Saturday) looks like it will be fantastic at Mweelin, with a good South-westerly blowing all day, and no rain forecast.   So those of you who might like to make a weekend of it, that would be an option!

(Fred and Joe, there are a few smaller slopes closer to Tralee that also work in SW, you don't have to go to Mweelin, although that is a slope of epic proportions and monumental lift!).

I think it may be best to post a final decision on the Sunday venue and meeting place on this thread on Saturday, just to be more confident of the weather!

Fred,
you have flown Mweelin. It is one of the sites we use in Cork. Remember the one which Joe attacked my glider  :D . It is just outside Macroom bout 20 Minutes. Flies from ESE round to West.
Rain. Overcast. High: 60° F. / 16° C. Wind SW 15 mph. / 25 km/h. Chance of precipitation 60%.  (Wunderground) always right for inland sites.
See you all Sunday

Post by: cvanscho on September 14, 2007, 14:15:36 PM
Coming from central Kerry, I tend to drive on the N22 to Ballyvourney, and then turn right to go to Mweelin, as it is a better road.  The best meeting place then would be in the parking place of the pub/shop in Ballyvourney that is on the north side of the main Cork-Killarney road (The Mills Inn - ph. no. (026)45237) - that is the first business on the left hand side as you enter Ballyvourney from the Killarney side.

Brian Coombs is also thinking of joining us if we go to Mweelin, but, like me, he can only do a half-day.  I would be prepared to meet at lunch time, but I won't be able to make it earlier.

Ron, do you know how to get directly to the Mweelin spot?

Fred, in my opinion, there is a lot of room for big models at Mweelin.  There is a lot of turf cutting there, so it is all bog, which mostly has soft grass.  The main hazards are areas where the bog has been cut away, resulting in some ditches and ridges, but it is all peat, no rocks.

Chris

Ho! No rocks.
Not like the Sheep's Head then which is all rocks and no bog.
Well... not much bog.

Yes I can get directly there (I hope). Got it on the gps prog on the laptop.

Well guys, it looks like the wind on Sunday is definitely swinging to north-westerly, after the rain, which looks like it should be over by about 11:30ish.

Thats means we will be going to Rossbeigh Hill, overlooking Rossbeigh Beach, which is next to Glenbeigh.  Glenbeigh is the first town after Killorglin as you travel west along the Ring of Kerry road.

Probably the most central spot for all to meet is outside Moriarty's Centra shop in Farranfore.  Impossible to miss, as Farranfore is a town of only about 8 business buildings!  It lies half-way on the N22 between Killarney and Tralee, there's no by-pass.  I suggest we meet in the parking lot at 10:30.

Some of us will also be going to Mweelin today to fly in the sw.  Fred, Joe, Ron, please give me a buzz!

My mobile no. again is: 087 929 7071

Hi Chris,

Yes all OK for a bit.
It will be a long haul.

Certainly will be out on the slopes this year, though at the moment I'm taking some 'modelling therapy' and making a West Wings kit of a Hawker Hart. Lots of fiddly cutting slots on formers and stuff like that.

I've put the pics on a site, or rather the computer has put the pics on a site, as I just clicked a button.
It's:

http://web.mac.com/coomkeen/iWeb/Site/West%20Cork.html

Click on Flying.
Hope it works.

Cheers all,

Ron
