Title: 16th + 17th March event
Post by: Happy Days on March 07, 2013, 22:23:34 PM
Just been looking at the weather forecast for next weekend. Of course that’s a long way off in weather terms.
But as a thought, I was wondering if any of you might be interested in a spot of Aero Towing if the weather wasn’t up to much on the Big L. :D

I’d have to get such an event cleared with the committee of the Model County Club ( In Monageer  Co. Wexford) of course. Only problem:- Has anyone got a Tug or an electric winch? ( The club has mains power and a number of 12v & 24v PSU’s)

Aero Towing would make a bit of a change from the usual slope soaring. May be one day of towing, and one day of sloping? :?:

Anyone got any views?

Keith

Keith,
when you looked in the crystal ball, what did it have to say about the weather? I am not sure how to fly PSS without the S?  :(

I was thinking of aero tow as more of a back up plan Ralph.
Just in case the winds were in the wrong direction or not strong enough. Rather than us all standing around kicking our heals, so to speak. :(

(Many years ago last century,or was it the century before that?  :?: I used to be a Boy Scout. "Be Prepared" was our motto. )

Sorry guys I'll not be making it next weekend there's two bakers off already and there's no way they'll let me away  :(
I like your thinking Keith better doing some sort of flying rather than none  I have a piper cub with a 30cc engine that hasn't turned a prop in a year, I'm hoping to have an aero towing weekend in August
Ralph check with JP he sent me a text a few weeks ago asking about Moss House

Hello everybody  :D
Sorry, long silence, work got on the way!  :!:

I think we should have a week end dedicated to aerotowing altogether (well, one or 2 or more!  :D )
To combine a week end with Sloping and aerotowing depending of the weather, is not,, in my opinion, very easy to deal with, as people who travel might like to know what is happening in advance. And what if the 2 days are great for sloping?

Anyway, I don't mind, one way or another, I'm in (I will follow the crowed!  :D ) and whatever the wind, I can slope (part of the challenge!) so either option, is good for me.

But, if the MCFC want to organise a week end aerotowing, count me in big time! Not enough of that over here, and that might motivate me to finish my tow plane! (5 or 6 years in storage at this stage   )

I'm hoping that they actually do something this time and not just physio and more painkillers. Don't relish the thought of more surgery, but I've been in a wheelchair once and that was once too many

Okay Andy.
As I see it at the moment there is, Fred (It wouldn’t be the same without the Frenchman, would it.) Ralph, JP, Richard and one other person who I can’t think of right now….

I did think Big Keith and Stephen might show their faces but I’ve heard nothing so far. :(  I was hoping that Brendan (lost it to the trees) would offer to cook us all some rashers & sausages for breakfast as he only lives a stones through from the west slope, but I’ve heard nothing from him either.
Joe has told me he’s on the other side of the planet this weekend, although I think he exists on another planet most of the time! :P

So how about one (or both) of the Kevin’s, or Les, Gerry, Dave? Or some of the Dublin crowd? Alan? Where are you all. (probably haven’t woken up from their hibernation yet!   )

AH! I’ve just thought of the ‘other person’ I couldn’t remember, …….ME!

No need to buy food, I have enough I think (I don't think we will be a lot, I guess around 10 / 15 as this is Paddy's week end, I also have breakfast!  :D )

Sooo.. Mac Donald Saturday night?       (sorry Roisin!)
And my French vinegar taste much better than the Irish one! Do we have another "contest" that I will win by bringing weird man stuff?    :P

Post by: Happy Days on March 16, 2013, 21:37:59 PM
Hey Andy,

Well the winds were not very obliging today. They were light to non existent, with a tendency to blow across the ridge rather than onto it.
This fact was pointed out to M. Marie (Fred) but being the cleaver little  , (   Did I say little… ) sod that he is, rather than change to a different slope, he insisted we all stay on the west slope and fly as best as we could.
Of course, he got his planes way up till they were just specks in the sky.  For the rest of us mere humans, we spent a large part of the day walking up and down the slope retrieving models! :!:

So to answer your question Andy, there wasn’t an awful lot of flying. Eating and drinking seemed to be the most action of the day.  I left around 4pm due to a malfunctioning transmitter. (It was a dry joint causing the problem. Which I’ve since repaired. ) So I don’t know if things improved after I left.

Tomorrow….. The winds, (on the forecasts that I’ve seen,) say slightly stronger winds for the morning, but we shall see.

We had nine pilots on the slope and a couple of new visitors, so not a bad turn out. Could just have done with a bit more wind.

The month of March is supposed to be famous for strong winds; Bring ‘em ON!

Good Morning Sleepy Heads

Shake off those hangovers, jump out of your beds and shout, “Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” :P

Yes folks it’s true, today is St Patrick’s day and what a day we’re looking forward to. :P
As you can see, the actual mountain is dozing under a blanket of cloud at the moment but the sun is rising and in a couple of hours those slopes should be clear and bathed in warm spring sunshine. All we’re gonna need,…..is some wind. :!:  At time of writing,……..it’s dead calm. :(  (poo) But ‘Hope springs eternal’ so with a bit of luck…………..

I’ll be up there about 10.00 See you all then.

Yes Ralph, what a difference an hour makes. :)

The wind here is gusting to around 12 kph from a slightly WSW direction. Forecasts predict 20, gusting 30 kph by midday from the west, That’ll do me nicely!  :D

Some might say it was cold on the Big L today. Some might say it was windy. Some might say it was wet (at times). All the above would be true, but what is also true is that there were lots of smiling faces as well! 8)
Where can I begin to tell all the stories of the days events? Answer; I can’t! So here are just a few of the things that I was aware of on the west slope, on St Patrick’s Day 2013.

There was certainly lots of flying, all-be-it between the showers of rain and sometimes hail/snow flakes. :(

JP’s new PSS models put in an amazing performance and I believe there are some pictures and video footage that’ll be posted soon to prove it.

Alan also put his PSS plane through its paces in the sometimes rather stiff westerly wind.

I saw Ralph looking rather contented flying another of JP’s models although because of the amounts of lift it took him three or four attempts to land the plane. (I found that last aspect very comforting as when I declared “Landing” yet kept on failing to get my P6 onto tera firma I heard someone shout out, “When?”   )

Richard braved the low temperatures to show off his flying prowess with his Quark and demonstrated why he believes it’s the best plane he has ever built.

In the mean time Fred put a number of differing styles of flying machine into the air for the benefit and amusement of us all. (More of that anon :?: )

Eventually Big Keith & Stephen tuned up in the afternoon. Keith proceeded to fly his new Zagi. ( For those who don’t know the story; Keith lost his first Zagi somewhere on the west slope just before the new year. Despite looking for it he, and later that week both he & his good wife failed in their searches to fine it.) So this was Keith’s maiden flight with his new Zagi.

Stephen mean while, had his first flight of his Easy Glider. In fact it was Stephens first flight of anything.  (Apart form a few moment last September) I must tell you all that his flying was outrageous!  He’d only been in the air for a few minutes and he was completing inside loops! :D  (We’ll have to keep an eye on this one lads,…….bit of a dare devil is our Stephen!)
Stephen was also responsible for finding Big Keith’s ‘lost’ Zagi, which he hadn’t even been looking for! This plane had been lying, upside down, in open country for over two months. Rained on and at one point covered by a couple of foot of snow. When returned to Big Keith who charged the battery the rx and servos all worked perfectly!

As the light began to fade and yet another shower started to descend Fred decided he was going to fly his Easy Glider.  Not content to just fly it, Fred felt compelled to fly it inverted! Not content with that, he decided to land it inverted. He missed the landing zone on the first attempt, brought the plane round…..and Stephen caught it on Fred’s second attempt. :P  That’s right, the Easy Glider was caught, while flying up-side-down.

These are just some of the events that stick in my mind from to day, no doubt other's will tell of their memories, but I shall certainly remember this St Patrick’s day for a good while to come.

Thanks to all for a most memoral event. Safe journey's home.

Keith.

Hi all and Happy St Paddy's Day! Thanks for a wonderful weekend of flying and fun. J.P's PSS planes were fantastic. (think his Spongebob Love Pants helped his flying!!) Fred told us lots of French stories helped along by copious amounts of French wine. (the best of course!!) Ralph (danger mouse!) entertained us with his snoring. Rosie fed us. Keith, as always, entertained us with his wit and charm. Big Keith and Stephen made the foreign visitors from the North very welcome. It was good to see new faces on the mountain especially the gy who flew my ASK21 (sorry didn't catch his name!) Hope to meet him again on the slopes of Mount Leinster! Ok, it's been a long couple of days so Im off to bed to catch some zzzzzzz's!! Thanks again to everyone for making the weekend such a success!

Well... That was a really nice week end!!
First of all, thank you all for coming, form North to South and a little bit in between!
Saturday was a very good day, with lightish winds, but lots of thermal activities, and wind picking upslowly, but surely as the day goes.
Arrived first at the slope, ready to face the -10 degrees they promised.. To end up having a nice cup of coffee.. In my T-shirt, flying the Explorer sitting on the grass  :D  They are the best mornings!  :D

On my way to the slope.. Looked promising!

This is when things gets hairy!
Once again, thanks to Roisin for the feast

Then, things started to go a bit wild!    :D

Featuring Richard the French Man

We had to give the Danger T-Shirt to Ralph... (did I mentionned he was the first one in bed?   :P  :P ) so we all ended up in his room!
What have to be done, need to be done!

Sunday... Wind!
And rain, and even snow!
Big contrast compared to the Saturday!
Need to add more layers to keep warm, and dry between the showers!
We had a few showers during the day, but nothing really serious, the longest one being around 10 minutes, giving us about 2 hours flight time until the next one.

Anyway, this was going to be the PSS day!  :D

JP maidened his 2 new PSS, the Aermacchi and the Fouga Magister. First flights were total non event!
Those things fly great and looks great! Well done John!
This was alo the first flight of Kevin's one, in the expert hands of Ralph.. Same results, no issues, and looks really good!

Oh, and we had a BBQ this time! (nobody were hungry on Saturday!)

As for me, I finally managed to properly test my Avacro wing.
Did a few launches on Saturday, believing that the wing will do well in the low lift conditions (very light, and huge wing area), but couldn't get that thing flying, even with 1.10 euros!  :P  :P
So, conclusions were that the profile I took needed more lift (F3F profile)...
So the Sunday, launched the wing again and... Well, I love it!
That thing really came up to life! Very easy to fly, perform well in aerobatics, and the huge rudder do some... interresting stuff!  :D
Very happy!

So, that was almost an end to the day, when Steven found Tall Keith wing he lost a good 3 months ago!
Let's charge the wing... and miracle, everything worked fine like nothing ever happened!
We had a very happy Keith!

And then, it was time to go home!

NOT!  :!:

Silly car, when you leave the boot open all day, the light in the boot don't turn off. Something the remeber for the next one!

Called Keith (the old bloke) and after 10 minutes, came back to the slope with Keith (the tall bloke) and Steven (the find stuff bloke). Jump leads and all that, and engine was running in a flash!
Thanks again guys for coming back!
No one left behind!!  :D

So once again, thank you all for coming    Looks like the first meeting of the season was another success, good flying, good laugh and banter, and most important, a good bunch of friends

Bring on April!!

Phew! :D  they were an awful lot of pictures Fred, thank you for taking / posting them all!
(I notice there are far more pictures of flying models taken on Sunday than Saturday. Is that because there was more lift? :P  Private joke folks, between my friend and me.
)
Some of those PSS models have really amazing detail. 8)  (I haven’t got the patients to produce work like that. )

Looking forward to the next meeting in April..... Or at least I was. Is it really true that nobody missed me when the group photo was taken?! :(
( Keith sighs, drops his shoulders, and slowly walks off to cry by himself in a corner of his workshop     )

Hi all, just got back tonight from a great weekend, thanks to Fred, Keith and the local lads for another fantastic flyin. I was very happy that all the hard work done by Fred and myself, producing the two new PSS models for Islandmodels, rewarded us with two great flights off the slope and also well done to Ralph for another successful test flight of kevin's MB-339. Fred also test flew his new small wing type model which also gave a sparkling performance on Sunday. Great weekend, good company, great craic and of course a chance meeting with Fred's older brother who flew over from France on Saturday night to join us at Moss house Richard Marie

Here are a few pics from the weekend:

Okay,
Now I know I’m old & feeble minded. :(

I know I’m slow and lacking agility.  :?

I even know my hearing is not as good as it once was, and I need spectacles to read.  But I’ve looked at this picture time & time again :!:  and I’m sure there’s something missing off that plane from JP's last post! :?:

Well done for landing it, whoever it was! Thanks for posting the picies' JP. See y'all in April, yes? :D  :D

Well Stephen you were in good company with the two Keiths, just watch the little one though...lol.

Seriously though little Keith is a mind of information and is very keen to teach others I found him a fab teacher and a great friend.

Not to mention big Keith he is a gentleman.

Glad to hear you had a great time and welcome to the wonderful world of r/c flight Iam new to it myself so hopefully catch you on the slopes sometime.

I’m very falttered. Thank you for your comments gentlemen. But there is a down side to them……

Someone bought me a light coloured kaki peeked cap a few of years ago.... It had the silhouette of a “T” tailed glider on the front..... I used to wear it a lot...... I’ve had to throw it away now. My head has grown too bloody big!

Okay Tracy, let’s take this group photo as a reference.
The guys standing are, from left to right :-

Richard Boyd,.. (aka Richard Boyd )
Kevin Barry ( aka ‘Kevin’ )…
Ralf (aka ‘rogallo‘ )
The tall guy in blue coat is Big Keith (aka ‘keith’ ) …
next is Stephen (aka stephen.shannon )…
then the tallest guy of the lot is Chris ( aka EI1683 )
beside him is Les, wearing a silly peek hat with false long orange and green hair, (I should point out that it was St. Patrick’s Day weekend) and just behind Les is
Fred (aka ‘Fred’ ) and next is a new comer on the day called
Joe.
Finally of all those standing is another new comer on the day who’s name I can’t remember.

Turning to those squatting in front, on the left is
John Pearson, (aka JohnPearson also refered to as JP )
Then, with his arms outstretched is me, (aka ‘Happy Days‘ ) and finally, sitting on an old car tyre (sorry that should read automobile tire) and draped in the national flag is
Diane. Diane forms the other half, or perhaps I should say the ‘better’ half, of Richard.

And the one person you can’t see in the picture is Roisin who is John Pearsons better half. You’ll see Roisin in other pictures of the event wearing a white jacket and hood.

So, now you’ve met the ‘Family’ so to speak.

Keith (sometimes known as little keith)

Keith,

Thanks so much for the clarification of those pictured. As I look back through the pictures it's nice to be able to put the names to the faces. Incidently, Car "tyre" or "tire" is fine, I certainly don't call my vehicle an automobile, I aint that proper  :).

I have a question concerning the little ASW that Richard was flying, our local hobby shop is selling those things and I've been curious as to what wind conditions they will handle.

Is that Orange and Yellow plane a Gentle Lady sitting in that bush? They are just a good ole' stand by.

You guys look like a great bunch of people, and that a great time was had.  We could only be so lucky to have a group like yours to fly socialize with. And hats off to the sweet ladies taking care of you gentlemen while you're out flying, that's pretty cool to see some wives involved with the group. Keep the pics coming, I'm going to make sure to share these with my brothers. Tracy (FF)
