Title: 1/3 scale Ka8b build
Post by: Fred on August 26, 2013, 13:29:43 PM
Alright, time to glue some wood!

As some of you know, I am in the process of moving home / workshops! But I could not go for long without gluing some wood, and while most of my stuff is in storage or in another workshop, I still have a bunch of kits waiting to be assembled!
Temptation was too strong, and out of curiosity, started to build the Ka8 to make sure a few of the parts fitted together well... And one thing leading to another...

Anyway, scale for this one is 1/3. That give us a wingspan of 5m, and an expected weight of around 8kgs or so.
Wing profile is a good old Hq (3.5/12).
Construction is all Plywood with a few miles of Pine strips (mainly 8x8mm from the local DIY shop).

I have planned to assemble the fuselage by sections. Middle, back, front.

I started by the middle section, that will support the wing, wing joiner and wheel (100mm diametre).

Just to remember what it is

Small tabs and angle gauges are used to set the formers correctly while drying

The front section comes second, making sure everything is square of course...

And the back section, which is also the rudder post:

While it's drying, started the rudder... Very easy and quick to build... and big!

For the elevator, same principle, so quick and easy.. And big too, so that's handy for my big fingers!

A few 8x8mm pine strips added to link the middle section to the back section, and we have what's look like a fuselage!

And even better with the elevator etc added for the look  :D

And that's it for today! Everything is glued with white glue, except for the elevator / rudder, so hopefully, I will have a good straight fuselage tonight!

So far, very pleased with it! one or two things that can be enhanced (plan already changed :) ), but this glider so far, is very easy to build.

Stay tuned for (maybe) more!  :D

Apparently, the 6m one is twice as fun!
With 5metres, I should be somewhere in the middle    :P

So far, very pleased with the build. Only "major" modification so far, I have added 2 formers in the fuselage, between the wing TE and Elevator LE.

As for the bottles.. well, I need support for the build!    (fuselage is straight.. so far!    :P )

Thanks Alan  :D
No, just looking around where we live. Main concern, is the workshop (and finding a house of course  :P )

For the build, did more work on the fuselage. SO far, so good!
If I have time, should be ready for covering this week end!

More work done this morning, moving nicely  :D
Fuselage removed from the jig to finish the front section and make sure everything was straight (it is!  :D  )

Started the cross bracing at the back of the fuselage. A few photos later!
First day at school for daughter number 2!

Thanks guys :)
Yeah growing up fast!

So, a bit of progress yesterday morning, with the fuselage cross bracing (?) started to be put in place.
Coming up nicely.

With the tail and rudder to check that everything still sound right  :D

And the beast...

I have since put more cross section, and also glued the canopy frame. Looks like a glider now! Next step is to start the rudder / elevator sheeting and I can start thinking of building the wings now  :D

Merki    :D

Kits are coming, just have to wait for Ronan to build his prototype to confirm this is a go  :D  (je te contact a ce sujet Ronan plus tard  :D )

Anyway, started to add a bit of "scale" details there and there, and the tube structure in the front, along the canopy frame etc.

Fuselage almost done  :D
Left to do is the nose cone, and the sheeting at the front.
Mounting the rudder servo and push pull system.
Skid and wheel mounting (will work on that when I come back from the slope this afternoon  :D )

Next week, I am away, so no work will be done  :!:  I was hoping to have the wings finished for the Glide in, but we'll see how it goes.
So far, build was like a walk in the park, only spending an hour or two each evening, took me a week to get to this stage  :D

Ok, a bit more work done this afternoon  :D
Removed the fuselage completely from the jig. Always a great moment for me  :D

Time to glue the fuselage bottom, that will also be used to support the skid and the hook for the bungee.
This is made with one long piece of 3mm plywood, with the opening for the wheel (110mm diameter in my case). The wheel support is as per the full size.

The reference:

And out in the garden  :D

The beauty and the beast... Will not tell you which one is which!    :P  :P

So, basically, fuselage is pretty much done.
I'm off South for work this week, so no more work will be done until next week end unfortunately  :!:  :!:
Also ordered the tube and rod for the wing (23mm tube, 20mm wing joiner).
Wings should be fairly easy to build, plan is printed, parts are waiting!  :D

Yep, for the week :) I stay at the Strand.

Pint(s) tonight with Gb!  :D  Want to join?  :D

Otherwise, for Wednesday, should be at Ballina at around 5 - 5.20. Can't remember where to go from there, but if you are going up via Limerick or the M7, we can catch up on the way  :?:

Would love to but a 200 mile round trip for a few pints, now that would be a bit Irish. Ill meet ye on Wed night.
head into the town, Goosers pub is on the right pass it  :(  and head straight through the little roundabout. drive straight on and look for a right turn up the hill ( signposted Graves of the L...) head up the hill and look for a right turn down a very small road ( after 100 M you should cross a yellow and black bridge, if not you have missed the turn off). Head up the "road" a few miles looking right for a road up the side of the hill with cats eyes on it. We will be at the summit.

Hope this is okay Ger?

After a week away from the workshop, it was time yesterday to glue some wood again!  :D

This time, with the wings.
So far, so good, no issues and my workshop was, for once, clean enough to start the 2 wings at the same time.

Anyway, nothing out of the ordinary. Spars glued first (I used 2x8x8mm pine wood) and then, the ribs glued to the spar, starting from the root to the tip...
Everything is glued with white glue.

Some "modules" like the airbrakes support and the servo boxes are built apart, then glued on the spar (classic!)

After roughly an hour, the white glue was dry enough to glue the top spar.

And as a preview, here is a quick look at the next steps, the trailing edges.
Start to look like a wing!

Tonight's jobs :
Glue the first ribs at the correct angle (2 degrees)
Glue the aileron's LE
Glue the TE of the wings

Getting there, hope to get the first photos of the fuselage with the wings on Wednesday  :D

Great work Fred. Any reason why you are using white glue. Would CA not be strong enough on a model this size?
Title: 1/3 scale Ka8b build
Post by: billscottni on September 09, 2013, 17:45:48 PM
CA is brittle Alan, PVA or aliphatic glues are much more flexible and last longer. If you don't need the speed of CA I wouldn't use it.

My first choice is always aliphatic, sands better than PVA
Title: 1/3 scale Ka8b build
Post by: Fred on September 09, 2013, 21:17:34 PM
Howdy,

I mainly used white glue because I'm not in a rush  :D
Never really cared about the glue I used, but just checked, this is Pattex Vinylic glue. Great one!
Grabs the wood in 5 minutes, and after roughly an hour, you can start to move pieces.
Also, white glue great fro "lengthy" projects, as by the time I finished the apply the last drop of glue in the spar, it took a good 5 minutes. Impossible to do properly with CA.

I also usually put white glue, and a few drops of CA to have the best of both worlds, but not this time.

Anyway, managed to do more work, and everything is on schedule  :D
Photos tomorrow

Post by: Fred on September 15, 2013, 13:19:32 PM
And a week later, here is a quick update

The Aileron's LE are glued on the wings

Then, the N1 rib is set at the correct dihedral (2 degrees)

And finally, the wing LE is glued, followed by the "mid" ribs (?).

Of course, at this stage, the wing joiner and incidence tubes are glued in place. Left to do now, are the airbrakes and sheeting  :D

And finally, got a decent afternoon yesterday to take some photos outside  :D

Now that I have the photos of the glider "naked", time to start some sheeting, starting with the elevator, and certainly followed by the fuselage nose cone.
Stay tuned for more  :D

Hi Conny,

Sorry, late reply again! Catching up with the Internet stuff now :)

Did some progress indeed, and the covering of the glider is getting really near now!

Finally managed to design some good working airbrakes. Happy with these ones as they are working great! They will be used in all my future projects for sure  :D

That mean now, I can finish the wings (ribs cap to be glued) and start the covering  :D

Fuselage is still waiting for the steel cables for the rudder, and ready to be covered too. Hopefully, I will receive them this week.
If all goes well, ready to go this week end / next week  :D

Oh, and some shots of it from last week:

Hi Conny,

Sorry for the late reply.
Kit cost? So far, don't know, but will hopefully be less than 300 euros. This will mainly depend of the cost to produce the canopies (ordered a test one, and that alone was 70 euros!  :!:  :!: )

Anyway, still at the covering stage, but no real rush to do the first flight as the weather here is really bad! (a storm a week pretty much... :!: ), but getting there!  :D

Still moving, but can't take photos outside  :!:  :!:  Damn weather! (storm again  :!: )

Canopy frame is now done (brass), but I have an issue with my covering!!
The back is white, so when I stick the covering on top on itself, a white line is showing  :!:  :!:
Fine for the wing, as the joints are underneath, but for the fuselage, this is another story!  :!:

Ah well...

Looks good from a distance!

Not to self.. Never plastic covering again! Tried to take some shortcuts on the finishing, I should have gone for Diacov + paint!  :!:  :!:
Ah well, If I like it, I ill recover it properly  :D
I try all I can to have it finished for the Glide in now... But the Queue of gliders is accumulating already on the workbenches  :!:

This one, unfortunately, crashed on its second flight      Wing joiner broke (weak aluminium tube :!: ).
As the flights were great (no trim touched etc etc), brand new parts were given, and it is being rebuild

Alright, following up on the above photo (the red Ka8), Dédé re-did the first flight.. With a stronger wing joiner this time!
All went perfectly! And he could have stayed hours in the air. A very happy man after the first landing.
He also finished first of the Ka8 at the scale competition in Macon :)

Coming from you, it means a lot!
And Dédé's ka8 (ok, ok, YOUR Ka8!  ;)) is a beauty! The flight in Macon was fantastic, really looks good in the air!

Thanks Fred !  ;)

And it's even better now than the rudder cable have been re-do and we optimize a little the CoG and throwing. Really a precise glider, smooth, good inertia at 11kg, and really good in thermal. The view in flight is fantastic and as I like to fly it really smooth you can't say it's a real or mot... Airbrakes have not secondary effect and are really effective. They also do a very nice sound when you do a slope pass with full airbrakes !   :-*

With the new wing joiner I even tried some aerobatics ! Loops are beautiful, vertical reversement are too easy, and rolls take feeeeewwwwww seconds to do but keep axis. I even do some really good looking sideslips ! After that Dédé that was a little nervous stop me... :'(

Really, I'm in love with it ! Thank you Fred ! Great job on this one !

Hi Fred et al,

anyone give me an idea of how much lead to put in the front to begin with. I want to cover the fuse so any suggestion would be good.

Cheers

Ralph

On top of my head, I put 800gr.
I had to add 3 5 cells batteries to that.

But mine is still too light  :'(

Hello,
Mine is 11kg and have something around or more than 1kg in the nose... Nothing abnormal for a 5 meter old glider.

Thanks Nhalyn :)
So looks like we can average about 1.2Kgs in the nose then :)

Charging mine as we speak, getting ready for Falaise! :)

That's a good average for this size and style of glider.
Keep it light with paint on the tail side !

To Fred : Yes, 3 weeks before Falaise !  8) (and thus Jet Power !  :-*)

Hi !

I don't know...  ::) My father build it as on the drawing and as the cutted parts for wings and fuse, horizontal stabilizer as on the drawings by construction, no measurements, CoG at the designated place, go to the field and tow it : it was perfect.

That's all...
Well, maybe few clicks of trim, but no more...

Just fly it, trim it, and if you have lots of trim then correct stabilizer incidence... It's a Ka8b, not a formula one...  ;)

Ok, after a few years, finally decided to redo the front of the fuselage!
Now, looks much better, and will feel slightly less ashamed to leave it out of the car!
New canopy also, and printed dashboard :)

32.1 degrees in the garden!!
Heated the fuselage and paint. Nose is red again!
Not too happy, but best paint job I did in years!!
From 2 meters, looks the part, and that's enough for me and my skills! :)

Next, canopy :)

Oh, and another T'punch, it's hot here! :)
