Title: 12th & 13th April 2014 Glide-In at Big L.
Post by: Happy Days on April 05, 2014, 13:55:14 PM
Only a week to go lads until the next Glide-In. Who’s going to be there to enjoy the ambience?

The weather reports so far look promising with only the chance of showers forecast. :)  The wind seems set to be from the west’ish direction although only around 10 - 15 Kmh. Looks like there won’t be any combat flying  , more of a  gentle ‘floating’ type weekend. :D  I suspect that polyhedral / or large wingspan models will fly best if the forecasts are correct.

I may well toddle up to the Big L for an hour or two, just to annoy everyone. But will there be anyone there for me to annoy???  :!:

YES, I will be there with hopefully a new model to maiden :D, have been looking forward to returning since the last time I was down at mount Leinster.

Was flying at Lackan today and my little wing did not get on well at all in the 45kph winds.

Okay Andy, see you in September then.

Gosh Justin, I’m surprised it flew at all.  It struggled enough in the 25 -35 Kmh winds when you flew it with Big Keith, Patrick & myself!

Hi Keith,

Yep, I'll be down. Hopefully will get more than 15seconds in the air this time  :D

Looking forward to it.

Hopefully so Stephen.

This time bring more than one fully working model with you. It’s the best way to insure the probability of getting some flying in.

How’s your powered flying going with the “Royal County Flyers”?

Grand stuff lads, look forward to seeing you all again. We seem to have a excess of Kevin’s and Keith’s don’t we.
Forecasts are still saying light breezes and clear skies for Saturday. We might even pick up a passing thermal or two. On the other hand, this is Ireland………

Ar yes, our walking wounded, Bill and Gerry. (Or not so walking wounded as the case may be)

Well guys, what more can I say. Hurry up and get well, although surgery always takes longer to recover from the older one gets. Ask me how I know  .

So take it easy and we’ll see you on the slopes again,… eventually. :D

Actually that’s not a bad idea because there are chairs and padded bench seats (to lie on) in the club house. Just thinking that you might need to give your back a rest at some point, possibly. Hopefully we’ll see you there :D …………..if it goes ahead.

Just got this from my friend at http://carlowweather.com

Quote

Saturday:

Cool day with temps between 9c and 12c cloudy in the morning with some low cloud and mist possible, this will improve by mid-day with cloud thining and some sunny spells in the afternoon.

Winds will be light West to South West in the morning veering West by mid-day and North West by evening, less than 15mph.

Sunday:

A little milder with temps 9c to 14c, dry with plenty of sunshine by 11am with just some passing clouds. Winds will be West and under 15mph again.

He has said he can give a more detailed forecast tomorrow, so I will fill you in when I get it.

Okay Justin. :D
I believe forecaster wind speeds are assumed to be over level ground. Generally, as you know, the wind speeds on the top of the slopes are rather greater.
Although it’s not a linear increase in my experience, with predicted speeds of 15mph I'd estimate the speed on the top of the west slope would equate to around 20mph or even a little more. :D
The west slope produces good lift in such winds. I’d say Saturday will be a good day for the ‘scale’ boys. :P

Correct you are Keith, I just confirmed with him those are estimated for 10 metres above sea level. I'll see if I can get some more information from him today. For a rough guide he say multiply the wind speed by about 1.75 :D

Can anyone get access to the Mount Leinster Webcam? I looks to me that you have to be a member of the Irish Hand-gliding and Paragliding Association to get access to it now, or am I wrong.

Does anyone have any? I'll try to get some in Bunclody in the morning.

By the way, what time are meeting?

You’re horrid to me! I don’t know why…(Keith turns his back and starts to cry    )

Afraid I don’t have any charcoal either.

Thanks for the offers Stephen, I’ll bring something to fly with me.  Might put the Alpina up in the air again.

Tomorrow the weather is looking really good, (for a change) Big L has been having a light covering of early morning mist these past couple of days. But it’s normally gone by 10 o/c. I’m looking forward to this meeting, there should be good steady lift… :D  And for those of you who feel the cold, it will probably be relatively mild.
As for my ETA tomorrow, I’ll probably be up there 10 - 11

Just hope the showers stay away.

Morning folks,

In the picture, that was taken a few minutes ago from the east of the Big L , you can see she is completely free of cloud apart from a small ‘crown’ covering the masts. The west slope is on the “other side” of the mountain, below the point of the arrow.

At my place, in the very middle of county Wexford, the wind is light (about12 - 15 Kph) from the S.W.

The temperature is 5.8degrees C.

It’s all looking good folks, see you up there later on.

Only problem,......wind speed (at my location) is zero!  Let's hope a breeze manages to pick up as the day progresses

Great weekend lads, thanks. The wind played ball big time. Enjoyed getting airborne again for a few hours. I must say a massive thanks for the help with finding the skua this morning when it hit the tress.

I took a lonely walk, with my young lad, Tom, into the forest hoping to spot the plane..... Within five minutes I had another five sets of eyes in the forest.... As Fred said.... "No one gets left behind" ..... Thankfully she was found in a few minutes...... Well as it fell out of the tree and almost split me... It kinda found me  :D

Very Good Bill  ,…..that was almost funny!

So, another glide - in finishes on the Big L. A lot of members mentioned that the temperature was a little on the ‘cool’ side, which was true, and on Saturday we did get a couple of heavy showers. There was not much in the way of sunshine, (when I was there anyway) and a couple of models were blown into the dreaded forest behind the landing zone, (all of which were recovered) but that’s all the bad news.

So, what action was there over the weekend.
I don’t suggest that this is a comprehensive list of ‘happenings’ just some of the things that I, personally, remember.

Fred told me he counted 18 pilots on Saturday and with the wind coming straight onto the west slope for most of the time there were certainly a lot of planes in the air. I regularly counted more than half a dozen flying at a time. Surprisingly there were no collisions. (not to have been so on the following day,....more anon  ) But staying with Saturday there were a great variety of models that were put through their paces. Large classic scale gliders seemed to be the models of choice, along with a couple of PSS, and some old favourites (of mine) Zagi and Skua wings & two, (or was it three?) Phase 6‘s. Landing conditions could be a little ‘challenging’ if the wind happened to be gusting at that time. But I don’t recall any major damage being reported.

For some reason the BBQ seems to attract a lot of attention at these glide-in's. Must confess I don’t really understand why. :?:  I’ve spent ages watching it and it’s never taken off yet! :P

Sunday saw more good strong lift rather than the gentle breeze that had been forecast. Fred again put his new 5mtr scale glider into the air along with some of his other larger cherished scale models. At one point I saw Joe flying his Quark but I get the feeling this man is really another ‘scale’ flyer because the plane he flew the most was a very respectable looking Spitfire. Unfortunately it seems he got a little carried away with his desire for dog-fighting and managed to clip Stephens Skua wing. No permanent damage was done to either model though.

Talking of combat wings, they seem to be becoming extremely popular. There were eight of them there on the Sunday. Les and friend (someone else who’s name I can’t remember……I think I’m going soft in the head) were flying Zagi’s, Big Keith and Patrick also had one each. Stephen & myself were putting Skua’s through their paces while Justin had his ‘homebrew’ wing, which looks remarkably like a Zagi I have to say, but isn’t of solid foam construction. Even young Tom, (Stephens son) put his powered wing up for a spin.
Along with some very fast mouldies and an easy glider, the variety seemed endless. Unfortunately the easy Glider had it part of it’s tailplane removed (while in flight) by that sneaky Spitfire, but Justin just kept on flying it as though the collision had been nothing noteworthy. He’s a very cool dude that Justin! 8)

Other members will post their own memories of the event. I’m hoping to put a short video/slide show of Saturdays meeting. Alas the cheap little camera I use seems to have given up the ghost half way through Saturday. Most of the stuff I shot was out of focus. I’ll see what I can recover.

Big thanks to one and all who turned up and made the event an EVENT.

Me,.... I’m off to bed now. Nighty night one and all, Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Back home last night at 21.30, wrecked with a red face (yeah, we had sun!) and a smile!

Many thanks to all of you for coming    we had a tad over 30 pilots over the 2 days coming from all over the country, and as Little Keith said, thanks to all who turned up to make this event, the Event it is

Anyway, lots of flying done during the 2 days, thanks to the prevailing west winds. Plenty of lift, one shower for about 5 minutes on Saturday, BBQ and most important, good banter and craic!

All sorts of models flew, from small to big, fast to slow, PSS, and the SFRC lads with the combat  :D

Keith gave a good account of what happened during the week end
I'll prepare the usual page with story and photo later on the website, and I'll post the usual selection of photos here in a bit  :D

My 2 selfish highlights of the week end, the first flight of my 1/3 Ka8 (like in a magazine, no trim adjustments, flew straight first shot. My new favourite glider!  :D ) and the first flight of my new to me ASH26, who almost ended up in disaster on the 5th flight after one of the wing pulled out of the fuselage, disconnecting one wing (flap full down, servo neutral).. Managed to land it OK  :D  But was considering to crash it safely away from the people as I had very little control. Anyway, ended up well   :D

Ok, photos coming soon, stay tuned  :D

My current plan is to go leave straight from work on Friday, so I should be at the field early Saturday. I am staying with a friend in Oysterhaven, could you let me know where some of the potential flying sites are so I can make some plans.
